Our History Makers: Arsenio Hall

written by @itsthecaptain The TV world truly wasn’t ready for a man like Arsenio Hall ! Perhaps that was the gift and the curse of it all. Before Arsenio, of course, you were allowed on Jay Leno or Letterman…but obviously you were an entertainer being interviewed. Although being ridiculed for “being too proper” and having a majority white audience yet also being told by his network his show was “too black” in his height of fame, Arsenio stayed true to himself and his cause and broke a very important barrier for not only television but for black history! Let’s really dig deep into exactly why. Arsenio came into the industry as an X Factor black entertainer. He wasn’t know for raunchy comedy or “hood certified black jokes”, he was a representation of the talented black man who used his skill and his networking to propel himself to a new height of black entertainment that has still yet to be duplicated. Arsenio The Ghostbuster – One of the most popular cartoons and movies of the 80′s is Ghostbusters although Arsenio didn’t make the movie he was the voice of “Winston Zeddemore” of the cartoon series. Why is this important? Because Winston was the smartest Ghostbuster. An Ex Marine with a PHD. Most cartoons [black specifically] were to be comedy relief, side shows or irrelevant to the process. Arsenio Hall Eddie Murphy’s Friend – Although he received a lot of flack for being Eddies Boy or Robin Arsenio Hall’s relationship with Eddie Murphy earned him a very prominent role in what is considered one of the greatest comedy movies of all time “Coming To America”. It gave Arsenio a chance to show his acting skills as well as different characters that himself and Eddie created for the film. He was also in Harlem Nights which was a cult classic along side Murphy, and comedy legends Richard Pryor and Redd Foxx. Strong vulgar language in the video clip Arsenio The Night Show Host – Along with the highlights above Arsenio truly paid dues in the world of entertainment and it was finally time for him to shine in a way that many had never seen before. After Taking over “The Late Show” which Fox first Piloted with Joan Rivers, Arsenio’s success in that time got him his “big break” with the aptly titled. “Arsenio Hall Show”. This made Arsenio the first black late night show host but also to this day still the most innovative and successful! From his suits, his Dog Pound to his guest truly Arsenio Hall was a depiction of Black Entertainment that wasn’t seen nor deemed as profitable during its time. His guest included Michael Jordan, Horror Film Star Jason Voorhies, Friends Eddie Murphy and at that time Presidential candidate Bill Clinton. This is also the show that rap star Bow Wow was seen for the very first time on national syndicated television! Arsenio Hall in very controversial TV moment with “Queer Nation” Arsenio The Activist – At the height of his career Arsenio Hall felt the need to give back and he did in major ways. Arsenio was an Ambassador for D.A.R.E [Drug Abuse Resistance Education] which was designed to education children and teens on the dangers of drug usage and what to do if you are ever under peer pressure to use or sell drugs. Arsenio also gave an assist to NBA Legend Magic Johnson in an effort to educate the world on the topic of HIV and AIDS through a Film called “Time Out” which was after Magic was diagnosed with the disease. At the time HIV/AIDS was considered a “Gay disease” but it was also rising in alarming rates in the black communities. Aresnio Hall was truly a man of many entertainment hats. All of those hats have given black entertainment a new look to not only ourselves but to America as a whole. So I salute Arsenio Hall as he worked hard to give us a new black entertainment

Whitney Houston In 1999: ‘I Didn’t Know How To Say No’

Singer worries to John Norris about letting down her millions of fans. By James Dinh Whitney Houston during interview with John Norris in 1999 Photo: MTV News Whitney Houston ‘s road to superstardom wasn’t without sacrifices, and that was something the late icon realized during her career. In the midst of the shocking news that the megastar had died Saturday afternoon (February 11), MTV News is taking a look back at a 1999 interview, in which the singer/actress opens up about career lessons like learning how to say no. “I got that singer thing, where your cords get so swollen and they want to take a break,” an energetic Houston tells MTV News’ John Norris about her condition after canceling shows due to sickness. Donning sunglasses and a short brown bob, Houston calls herself “soft” when reminiscing about memories like her Greatest Love World Tour (her first headlining world tour) because of her then-desire to be a people-pleaser. “I’m pretty stern about my convictions and what I mean,” the diva explains during the Boston tour stop. “But when it comes down to certain things, I didn’t know how to say no. I didn’t, because there’s a lot of people out there.” Asked what goes through her head prior to performing a show, Houston says, “What really goes through my head is what note am I really going to, like, really start off with. You know what I mean? Just from the groove of my show. I know the show. They don’t know the show.” From career lessons to her love life, Houston also chatted about then-husband Bobby Brown, saying the former New Edition frontman turned her shows into a family affair when they made stops in his hometown of Boston. “I got so many Brown relatives here. You kidding me? Oh my God! And there’s a lot of them. But he has a lot of fam here. It should be a good gig.” Share your condolences with Whitney’s family and friends on our Facebook page. Whitney Houston’s Final Film ‘Sparkle’ Set To Be Released In August

The remake, in which she plays Jordin Sparks’ mom, wrapped filming before the singer’s untimely death. By Kara Warner Jordin Sparks and Whitney Houston in “Sparkle” Photo: Alicia Gbur/ Stage 6 Films The news of Whitney Houston’s death Saturday has left those who loved her reeling, with a multitude of celebrity fans and friends expressing their grief publicly. Houston’s untimely passing on the eve of the Grammy Awards has shocked everyone, nearly extinguishing the normally festive atmosphere in Los Angeles surrounding the music industry’s biggest night. While fans will unfortunately not have the opportunity to see her sing live again, Houston’s legacy will live on via her final film, “Sparkle,” which is scheduled to be released by Sony in August as planned. A rep for the studio expressed deep sympathy for the loss of the icon to MTV News. “Like all those who knew and loved her, we are shocked and saddened and the world has lost an incomparable talent. Right now our thoughts are with her daughter, her family and her friends.” The film’s producer, Bishop T.D Jakes, also expressed his sadness upon hearing the news: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic and untimely passing of Whitney Houston, whom we were blessed to have just completed work with on the remake of the film ‘Sparkle.’ We ask the world to join us in lifting up Whitney’s family in prayer and ask God for their strength and comfort during this devastatingly difficult time,” Bishop wrote in a statement. “At the apex of her career, Whitney had no peer, with a voice that shaped a generation. She has left behind a musical and film legacy that will endure. … She will be sorely missed by us all.” “Sparkle” is a remake of the 1976 Irene Cara film about three talented young musicians who struggle with addiction. The 2012 version features “American Idol” alum Jordin Sparks as the titular character Sparkle and Houston, who also served as executive producer after having acquired the rights to the film more than a decade ago, as her mother, Emma. Houston’s co-producer on the project, Howard Rosenman, told the Los Angeles Times he was in total shock upon hearing the news. “I have no idea about the impact [of Houston’s death] on ‘Sparkle,’ which I saw last night,” he told the newspaper of screening a rough cut of the recently wrapped film. “[Houston] was unbelievably fantastic in it.” “Sparkle” was Houston’s first movie in 16 years, since her performance alongside Denzel Washington in the 1996 holiday feel-good film “The Preacher’s Wife.” Her most memorable and celebrated role was in the 1992 romantic drama “The Bodyguard.” Share your condolences with Whitney’s family and friends on our Facebook page. LL Cool J’s Journey From ‘Krush Groove’ To The Grammys

LL Cool J will become the second hip-hop artist to host the Grammy Awards on Sunday. By Rob Markman LL Cool J in the mid-1980s Photo: Paul Natkin/ WireImage Box. All it took was a simple three-letter word to jumpstart the illustrious career of a hip-hop legend. LL Cool J was unknown when he made a cameo in the 1985 film “Krush Groove” but it wouldn’t be long before the rap world began buzzing about the 16-year old boy in the baby-blue Kangol. In the flick, which was based off the formative years of seminal hip-hop record label Def Jam, LL walked into an office to showcase his talents for label brass and top talent Run-DMC. After he was denied an audition, the Hollis, Queens MC simply said, “Box,” signaling his entourage to cue the oversized boombox and start the music. It was then that LL began rapping his debut single “I Can’t Live Without My Radio,” an ode to the ghetto blasters that ruled the 1980s. Fast forward 27 years and that cocky kid in the baby-blue bucket hat has conquered every avenue in music, set new benchmarks in Hollywood and is now hosting the 54th Annual Grammy Awards . But LL Cool J (born James Todd Smith) isn’t the first hip-hop artist to host the Grammys. Queen Latifah had the honor before him, but the Grammys didn’t officially start recognizing hip-hop as a legitimate genre until 1989, when DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince’s “Parents Just Don’t Understand” won for the untelevised Best Rap Performance. Hip-hop has certainly come a long way. “When we first started the music, they didn’t even play it on the radio in the daytime,” LL told MTV News in October when he walked the carpet at the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards , acknowledging the network for dedicating an entire show to rap music. “Hip-hop was two hours at night or an hour at night on the weekends, and that was it. So to go from an hour or two hours at night to entire award shows and whole generations of people whose lives have been changed just because they’re involved with the music, that’s a big thing.” Just as hip-hop has grown, so has Smith. Back in the 1980s, when he first started his career, many considered rap to only be a passing fad. (MCs who clocked more than three albums in their discographies were thought to be anomalies.) LL has put out 14 albums if you include his two greatest hits LPs, 1996’s All World and 2009’s All World 2. There was his classic 1985 debut Radio and his critically acclaimed 1990 album Mama Said Knock You Out, which spawned the Grammy Award-winning single of the same name. In the mid-1990s, he once again proved his dominance with Mr. Smith and took his hit-making skills into the new millennium with his 2002 single “Luv U Better” off of his 10 album. Check out photos of LL throughout his career! If Uncle L’s music accolades aren’t enough, his strides in Hollywood have surely made him not just a hip-hop icon, but a permanent fixture in American pop culture. He started in “Krush Groove” with a brief cameo playing himself, but quickly followed up with an appearance in Goldie Hawn’s “Wildcats” the next year. Since then, he has starred in major motion pictures like “Deep Blue Sea” with Samuel L. Jackson, “Any Given Sunday” alongside Al Pacino and “S.W.A.T.” with Colin Farrell. LL also held it down in his own television series, “In the House,” and now stars as Special Agent Sam Hanna in the police drama “NCIS: Los Angeles.” It’s been quite a ride for LL Cool J, and when music fans watch him Sunday night at the Grammys, they will surely see a well-accomplished musician, actor and business man, while those who have followed since day one will see that 16-year-old kid in the baby-blue Kangol and say, “Wow, he’s come a long way.” Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Don’t miss our Grammy red-carpet live stream this Sunday, February 12, for a full three hours of mayhem, starting at 5 p.m. ET on MTV.com. And the fun doesn’t end Sunday: MTV News has you covered for all the Grammy red-carpet fashion , Grammy winners and Grammy news until the hangover wears off! Hitchcock’s Rebecca Getting the Remake Treatment

No one should be surprised anymore at these announcements, but: DreamWorks and Working Title Films are remaking Alfred Hitchcock ‘s Oscar-winning noir Rebecca , because nothing is sacred. At least they’ve got people at the wheel with respectable creds; veteran producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are onboard while Eastern Promises screenwriter Steven Knight is scripting based on Daphne du Maurier’s original 1938 novel, which saw a few deviations when Hitch made his version (which, incidentally, went on to be the only Best Picture Oscar-winner of his career). The 1940 film, produced by David O. Selznick, starred Joan Fontaine and Laurence Olivier in the tale of a woman who finds her new husband and his servants still obsessed with his dead wife, whose memory haunts their home. It went on to garner 11 Oscar nominations. A lofty bar, to be sure, but ” Rebecca from the makers of Eastern Promises and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (not to mention just about every Coen brothers movie)” already sounds way more promising than ” To Catch a Thief by the guys who made xXx ,” no? • DreamWorks to remake Hitchcock’s ‘Rebecca’ [Variety]
