Lesley Manville on Another Year and Why She Doesn’t Care About the Golden Globes

When speaking with Another Year star Lesley Manville, it’s hard to not walk away with the impression that she feels this is her big break. Sure, her career has spanned over 30 years — and Another Year is her sixth film with Academy Award nominated director Mike Leigh — but, as Manville points out, no other performance of hers has ever generated this much buzz in the United States during awards season. An awards season that has already garnered Best Actress accolades from the National Board of Review.

Old Man Favre Finally Calls It Quits. No, Really.

At least that’s almost what it sounded like he was saying in a post-game press conference yesterday. NFL legend Brett Favre looks to have played the final game of his record-breaking career. The injured star quarterback sat it out as his current team, the Minnesota Vikings, were beaten 20-13 by Detroit to end their poor season, then gave every indication that he was retiring for the third time. “It’s been a wonderful experience for me,” Favre told the official NFL website. “This year did not work out the way we would have hoped, but that’s football. I don’t regret coming back.” But the 41-year-old knows there will be doubters after he made the same announcements in 2008 and 2009 before negotiating lucrative multi-million dollar contracts to play further seasons in the NFL. “I don’t know for me if it’s ever easy,” Favre admitted. “I’m sure throughout this year, the comment has been made that, ‘We’ll wait and see in August or September’ and that’s fine. It’s time. I’m OK with it.” It’s been a difficult season for Favre, who is the the NFL’s all-time career record holder in wins, passing yards and touchdown passes. He was fined $50,000 for failing to cooperate with an NFL investigation into improper text messages he allegedly sent to a former game-day hostess while he played for the New York Jets in 2008. On the field, he finished with the lowest quarterback rating of his career (69.9) as the Vikings finished bottom of the NFC North, missing three of their last four games with injury. Favre has been a three-time MVP during his 19 seasons in the NFL, 16 with the Green Bay Packers. He helped the Packers to the Super Bowl in 1997. Great. Mazel Tov. Now we have both Michael Jordan AND Brett Favre to remind us that sometimes living legends should just walk away. Take head, Lebron and Kobe. Source

Here’s hoping Biebs won’t be wearing just a bed sheet.

Justin Bieber Vanity Fair cover, interview So much for Baby Biebs disappearing in 2011. He’s already got a shiznit of appearances and interviews lined up that will pretty much send Bieber addicts into a freakin’ frenzy. I can’t even roll my eyes anymore. And we’ve got the news that Justin Bieber will be on the Vanity Fair cover and have an in-depth interview that will blow your mind. Come either February or March of 2011, you will be able to snag up a copy of Vanity Fair with Justin Bieber on the cover wearing just a diaper, sucking on a pacifier and holding a teething biscuit. (Ok, so the latter is not true, but it would be cool and more fitting. We kid. Sorta.) So how is Bieber able to snag so many relevant magazine covers like Vanity Fair instead of simply Teen or J-14? Thankfully Bawbwa Wawa helped him out a bit with adding him to her most fascinating people of the year list. It’s not like there hasn’t been a teen to grace the cover of Vanity before. You may remember Miley Cyrus’ scandalous spread? Who doesn’t, right? And perhaps you remember when Lindsay Lohan and Raven Symone shared a double cover of the mag years back? Well, rumor has it that Biebs won’t be sharing the cover with anyone else and he probably won’t be just covered with a bed sheet. This will be a good chance for the teeny bopper to shed a more serious light on his life and his career. So what will the cover look like? Will Biebs sport a suit? Kanye West Turned Defiance Into Victory In 2010

Via Twitter, G.O.O.D. Fridays and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy ‘Ye came out on top this year. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Steven Roberts Kanye West performs at the 2010 Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images So, this Kanye West fella, you might have heard of him. He basically Swift-boated his career at the 2009 VMAs, went into a self-imposed exile and then triumphantly returned nearly a year later with what many have called the best album of 2010. Huh? In just over 12 months, West baffled critics by going from zero to hero, while still lashing out at the media and, with stunts like his #kanyeshrug hashtag, essentially proving he’s the same guy he always was. “I think the thing with Kanye, he really just stuck to the same script, which is basically, Iove me or hate me but the music is gonna be so great you have to deal with me,” Complex editor-in-chief Noah Callahan-Bever told MTV News. “And that’s been the story of his career since the beginning. I think this year, he happened to be loved or hated in such extremes at the end of 2009, going on a self-imposed exile in Hawaii, he really created a currency in the intrigue with what he was doing.” What he was doing was assembling a barrage of hip-hop’s best producers — including Q-Tip, the RZA, Pete Rock and more — and a diverse range of collaborators to help put together his artistic denouement: My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The collection was bombastic musically and browbeating lyrically. The first shot, “Power,” was a sonic middle finger to his detractors. ‘Ye looked at his life and career and took stock of his place in the pop-culture ranks. It was a manifesto, of sorts, in which West declared that he was aware of his flaws and mistakes but everyone else can take them or leave them. “He really figured that great music will change things,” RapRadar and RESPECT. magazine’s Elliot Wilson explained. It wasn’t just the music, though, that helped Kanye come back into people’s good graces once again. He took to Twitter to voice this thoughts, sometimes in amusing non sequiturs, sometimes in revealing bunches of dispatches came in bunches, like when he addressed, once and for all, the Taylor Swift incident. In words that he couldn’t seem to put to melody or properly convey to a talk-show host, West simply took responsibility, apologized and moved on to the next track. And then he proceeded to change the subject with his string of G.O.O.D. Friday releases online. “He did select press but he made a lot of noise online,” New York Times music critic Jon Caramanica said. “I think he understood quickly how to make the best use of that medium.” But what the critics and everyone who catches themselves constantly humming songs from Fantasy agree on is that “he really brought it all back to the music,” as Callahan-Bever put it. “At the end of the day no Taylor Swift incident or ‘Today’ show appearance can take away from [that].” Related Videos Stories Of 2010 Related Photos Kanye West’s Amazing Year Related Artists Kanye West

Will Oprah OWN the Airwaves?

Sarah Palin fans may not tune in , but Oprah Winfrey takes the next significant step in her career on Saturday when she launches OWN. The self-titled cable network is expected to reach nearly 80 million homes and, according to the goddess herself, will connect “you to your best self and to the world.” Talk about a lofty goal! Oprah says she always knew she would be a “light carrier” and that her 25-year run as a talk show host would simply be a starting point for her “next thing.” She’ll appear on OWN for at least 70 hours/year, starting Saturday night with a behind-the-scenes special. Other programs will feature Oprah favorites such as Cristina Ferrare’s Big Bowl of Love , In the Bedroom with Dr. Laura Berman and The Gayle King Show . Says Winfrey: “I’m going to be there to get this network launched. I have a commitment to do a show on the channel for the next several years to try to get things off to as good a start as possible. But, if in 25 years, I’m sitting there on the air in my rocking chair, something went wrong.” Will you tune in to OWN?

How Katy Perry Avoided A Sophomore Slump

Critics weigh in on pop star’s rise thanks to Teenage Dream . By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage In 2008, Katy Perry proclaimed she was One of the Boys , going around town kissing girls and “Waking Up in Vegas.” Then two years later, Perry released her triumphant sophomore effort, Teenage Dream , a spirited mix of sugary love ballads and feisty anthems. Many artists have fallen victim to the dreaded sophomore slump, delivering fans and critics a disappointing second album. Instead, Perry stuck to her pop guns and gave everyone what they wanted: fun, quirky pop songs. While her contemporaries were busy rapping, like Ke$ha , or making grandiose political statements, like Lady Gaga, Perry just wanted to have fun. She wanted her fans to dance around in daisy dukes, and it paid off: She had a string of #1 hits including “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream” and her empowerment anthem “Firework.” So, when MTV News asked a few critics just what it is that helped solidify Perry’s pop star status in 2010, they had this to say: Perry looks like a pop star, but isn’t as polished as most of them. Elliot Wilson of RapRadar.com explained, “She has a rock-chick kind of attitude, but at the same time she can pass for a pop princess. “What I like about Katy Perry is that she seems kind of rebellious. People want to peg what the artist should be, and then you see the artist’s growth, and I think that she’s challenging. I think she’s brash and bold.” Plus, over the course of the past 12 months, she’s used that persona to sell herself and her music. “She’s very good at the marketing side of things,” Noah Callahan of Complex explained. “She has a very clear aesthetic. It’s very digestible and understandable, and it doesn’t hurt that she’s very easy on the eyes.” Writer Julianne Esobado-Shepard credits Perry’s kooky persona as one of the reasons why she’s been so embraced by pop lovers. “She’s got hooks. Again, [her producer] Dr. Luke just kind of murdered it, especially with ‘Teenage Dream,’ ” she said. “She’s sort of a blank slate in a way. She’s like an avatar of what people think they want, which is again like boobs. The fact that she likes shooting things out of her boobs so much has really gone a long way for her career.” What do you like best about Katy Perry? Sound off below! Celebrity of the Year Finalist #2: Mel Gibson!

With 2010 drawing to a close, it is with much pride that THG unveils its 10 finalists for its prestigious, Fourth Annual Celebrity of the Year award. These stars all gave us their best, their worst, their nude pics (sometimes) and their scandals (often). This month, THG honors that greatness. After the bong-smoking, often-pantsless Miley Cyrus could not be tamed at #3, we present another polarizing figure at #2… Mel Gibson! Simply put, Mel Gibson is not on this list because of his work. The legendary actor became completely unglued this year. He is an all-time movie star now embroiled in one of the all-time celebrity scandals. We thought we’d seen it all with his epic DUI arrest of 2006. Or when he made news LAST year by giving it to Oksana Grigorieva – and getting her pregnant – while still married to his wife of nearly three decades, Robyn. It turns out Mel saved his borderline crazy best for 2010 … Mel and Oksana’s daughter, Lucia, was born in late 2009. The pair split up early this year amid a volcanic blowout at the actor’s Malibu home. A blowout, Oksana claims, that ended with both herself and Lucia getting punched in the face. Mel denies this and says she’s extorting him. What he can’t deny, however, are the racist phone tirades – obtained and released, day after day by Radar Online this summer – against her. Whether he abused her or not (he tells a different story and there have been no charges filed against him), the Mel Gibson tapes are shocking. The man needs help. Medication and then some. As celebrity news goes, this story will go down as one of the most remarkable of all time. It’s remarkable that anyone on Earth would think or say the kinds of things uttered in the recordings below … let alone a Hollywood legend. One of the world’s leading heart throbs managed to undo a quarter century of adulation by alienating minorities, Jews, women … you name it. Baffling as it is, the next chapter has yet to be written. Mel and Oksana continue to trade allegations and fight in court over custody of Lucia. Can his career be saved? Is he really an abusive monster or just a sad guy with serious anger management problems? Only time will tell. Elisabetta Canalis in her Bikini of the Day

All I know is that these pictures are better than the midget with retard scars on her knees who was staring in the porno I thought was a great idea to watch despite everyone on the cover looking like they were found on the street or in a homeless shelter. I am talking toothless, unshowered and disgusting……all fucking each other…. So whether this whore is actually a whore trying to advance her career by dating George Clooney, or whether she is actually into him and it just conveniently helps her get her name out in America, cuz Italian acting pay isn’t quite as good or not…she’s got a rockin’ body in her bikini and if I was George Clooney or at least in his position, I’d let all the hot pusys around use me while I use them, it’s a fair trade off.
