LA Times: Liberal Embrace of ‘Waiting for Superman’ Proves Conservatives Are Intolerant

The internet is abuzz with praise for the new documentary that points out the many faults of public education,  Waiting for Superman . With positive reviews from both the  Huffington Post  on the Left as well as the  New York Post   on the Right, it makes one wonder, how could this be? It appears that this film has single-handedly done what  President Obama  could not do to save his own life: bring the Left and Right together on a single issue. It is refreshing that the film’s director, Davis Guggenheim (who directed  An Inconvenient Truth ), is able to put politics aside to see the destructive nature of teachers unions. Guggenheim put his own kids through private school but realizes that not everyone can afford such a luxury. Here, he sets out to tackle the real problems that have long plagued public school systems: teachers unions. Though, he is  careful to say that he isn’t bashing unions  in general. Guggenheim sees that not everything has to be a political football, which is why we should applaud him for taking a bipartisan approach. However, some feel that the response to the film shows the true, negative colors of conservatives. Liberal Patrick Goldstein comments in the  Los Angeles Times : If you’re a documentary filmmaker, you’re happy to get rave reviews from any source, since you need all the good PR you can get. But I find it revealing, when it comes to the liberal vs. conservative partisan divide, that whenever Michael Moore releases a new documentary promoting a liberal cause, conservatives are quick to bash him for being a left-wing propagandist. But when Guggenheim makes a film offering wholehearted support for a conservative cause, liberal critics have written just as many glowing reviews as conservative ones. (The film has a sky-high 93 fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes.) What does that tell you about who’s got the most open mind here? First of all, only looking at  Michael Moore  and Davis Guggenheim as leftists is a bit single minded (even though they are). Sure, they both have done their partisan films, but one is far worse than the other.  Big Hollywood ‘s editor-in-chief John Nolte has even gone as far as to  defend Moore  when he was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors: Yes, Michael Moore is a liar, a shameless propagandist and an anti-American leftist of the highest order. But he’s also one helluva talented filmmaker and it would be wildly hypocritical for me to believe or argue that anyone should be blacklisted from AMPAS due to their political beliefs. And that’s the only reason I could possibly use to argue against this appointment. It doesn’t get any fairer than a conservative defending Moore because not doing so would support a blacklist mindset. Even still,  Moore  has dedicated his career to leftist causes.  Look at his films:  Bowling for Columbine  (a good film that ends up ruining itself with a weak plea for gun control),  Fahrenheit 9/11 (a horribly partisan and dishonest portrayal of Bush enabling conspiracy theorists), and  Sicko  (a disgusting defense of socialism). Everything Moore directs (and writes and says) is to further a far Left agenda. Therefore, he is so painfully predictable, which is why it is so easy for the Right to go after him. On the other hand, Guggenheim has directed the paranoid global warming holy film  An Inconvenient Truth  as well as a short for the 2008 Obama campaign. Yet Guggenheim differs from Moore in that he has also done a lot more work outside of political documentaries. If you look at his profile from imdb.com  you will see he has directed episodes of  Deadwood ,  Numbers ,  Alias,  and even the conservative loved  24 , a show Moore wouldn’t touch in fear of losing his leftist cred. Sure,  An Inconvenient Truth  is praised by leftists and hated by conservatives (generally speaking), but by creating a wide variety of content, Guggenheim gives an opportunity for both conservatives and liberals to appreciate his work. So it isn’t fair to assert that liberals are better than conservatives because critics on the Left show balls by embracing a leftist filmmaker who makes a conservative argument (when the Right won’t respect Moore). The day that Moore steps outside of his self-loathing, socialist-loving fog bubble is when conservatives can respect him. Anyone who is honest about their politics will find good and bad on both sides. Guggenheim has apparently done this with  Waiting for Superman . Until Moore decides to transform some of his propaganda films into useful documentaries, we will continue to wait, but I wouldn’t recommend holding your breath. Crossposted at Big Hollywood

John Legend, The Roots Motivate Masses At NYC Show

Common, Jennifer Hudson, Estelle, Melanie Fiona join collective for ‘Unstaged’ concert steeped in soul at Terminal 5. By Jayson Rodriguez John Legend Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Over the course of his solo career, John Legend has proven to be as refined a singer as any of his R&B contemporaries, from Maxwell to Usher. But with his new collaborative effort with the Roots, Wake Up!, the velvety-smooth Legend showcases more gruff vocals amid the set’s 1960s and ’70s soul-drenched motivational music. On Thursday night, John Legend’s full range was on display as he worked through his repertoire alongside Philadelphia’s finest at Manhattan’s Terminal 5. The show was the latest installment in American Express’ Unstaged concert series, this one filmed by Spike Lee. The collective marched out onto the stage in New Orleans “second line”-style and settled themselves in front of the backdrop, a massive replica of the Wake Up! album cover, which features Legend and the Roots in animated form performing on a non-descript block. Legend dashed through his hits, from the pulsating “Green Light” to the crowd-pleasing “Ordinary People.” Estelle joined the festivities, subbing for Erykah Badu on the Roots’ “You Got Me.” Common and newcomer Melanie Fiona helped Legend bring the crowd to full-on screams with their current single “Wake Up Everybody.” The Chicago MC was spry on stage, moving from side to side as he recited his lyrics. “It’s the God hour, the morning I wake up,” Com rapped. “Just for the breath of life, I thank my maker/ My mom say I come from hustlers and shakers/ My mom built it on skyscrapers and acres.” Just when things were heating up, however, Legend pulled the plug an hour into the set, thanking the audience for coming out and quickly exiting to the backstage area. … Moments later, though, the smooth crooner reappeared onstage and his encore drew even louder cheers. An elegant Jennifer Hudson appeared join Legend for a duet, rocking the capacity crowd with her stunning vocals, which were as beautiful as she looked. Legend closed out the show with “Shine,” a number from Wake Up! that also serves as the lead single to for the documentary “Waiting for Superman,” which opened Friday (September 24). “They wait to plead their case, unknown cast aside,” he sang on the moving track. “I love to see their face, can we spare the light/ Are we afraid to see the prisoners of yesterday?/ These beautiful minds, trapped inside/ Bring them back to life, let them shine.” What do you think of Legend and the Roots’ new album? Jay Sean Reveals Hairy Past On ‘When I Was 17’

On Saturday’s episode, singer says he resembled ‘one big hairball.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Jay Sean Photo: MTV News Jay Sean is a lady-pleasing crooner whose smooth lyrics might only be eclipsed by his even smoother face. But when the Cash Money Records pop star was a teen, he had a grooming style that Gillette might have been afraid of. According to Jay Sean, his look resembled “one big hairball, basically.” “When I was 17, I thought I was the sh–, even though, I clearly wasn’t,” he says in this week’s episode of “When I Was 17,” which also features Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em and Tony Award-winning actress Kristin Chenoweth. “I looked very different. You could barely see my face because it was covered in hair.” The Punjabi singer, who started his career ruling the U.K. charts, had long stringy hair that extended past his chin. His beard wasn’t quite scruffy, but covered a good portion of his baby face. And his eyebrows connected as one long stripe of hair above the ridge of his eyes. Jay’s brother, Naroop, laughs at the memories of his follicle-enhanced sibling. “He had quite thick eyebrows before he discovered tweezers,” Naroop says, teasing his bro. Rather than try to contradict this talk, the singer adds more embarrassing details about his former looks. “My hair was long; I could tie a knot under my chin if I wanted,” Jay adds. “I had a huge beard. And I had a unibrow. Eyebrows would connect with the hair, which would connect with the beard.” Now, however, Jay Sean is a rising pop star after scoring his breakout hit stateside with “Down” featuring Lil Wayne. “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Jay Sean, Kristin Chenoweth and Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em — premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. Jessica Alba Machete Scene of the Day

Here is the Alba scene from Machete. I don’t kno if this is her or a body double and I really don’t care, because Alba died to me a few years ago when she decided to have a kid, and no matter how well she bounces back from that shit, a living creature has managed to squeeze through her weird vindictive cunt that she used to trap her boyfriend who tried to leave her, but more importantly, she didn’t abort it because she felt like her career was in a safe place that wouldn’t be affected by a pregnancy, when really she only had a career cuz she didn’t have a kid.. Either way, here’s the clip.

‘American Idol’ Adds Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler As Judges

Randy Jackson will remain on the panel with the two rookies. By Gil Kaufman Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez, Randy Jackson and Ryan Seacrest Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest is a master of suspense, expert at milking a moment for maximum impact during the gut-wrenching elimination episodes of the musical competition. But on Wednesday (September 22) at a press conference to announce the two new judges joining the “Idol” panel for the show’s upcoming 10th season, Seacrest did away with the shenanigans and got right to the point. Just moments after taking the stage, he cued up a montage of clips chronicling the legendary rock-and-roll career of Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler, 62, who, as reported, will be joining the show. Seacrest invited the high-energy singer out onto the stage, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer let out one of his signature wails. Asked how it feels to be joining the “Idol” family, Tyler said, “Fabulous. Wonderful. Feels like the perfect feathered nest.” The choice is an odd one, considering Tyler has fronted one of the world’s premier rock bands for nearly 40 years and has a colorful background, to say the least, including recent feuds with his bandmates and a 2008 stint in rehab after decades of sobriety. But despite no formal experience on TV, the singer explained why he decided to give it a try after all those years on arena stages fronting the best-selling American rock band of all time. “It’s being a part of something much bigger than yourself,” he said. “I want to bring some rock to this roller coaster and show you that if you got the heart, you got the talent and you got the feeling to do this, you could be the next American Idol.” Wearing an atypically sedate outfit of black slacks, a velvety jacket and a paisley shirt, Tyler was all smiles during the brief appearance. Moments later, the screen filled with the second introductory montage, this one ticking off the bona fides of singer/actress Jennifer Lopez, including clips from “Selena,” a string of magazine covers and nods to the 55 million albums she’s sold during her career. The show also paid lip service to the frenzy of speculation about Lopez possibly joining the highest-rated program on TV by flashing a series of tabloid reports and TV clips chronicling the rumors of Lopez’s hiring. The singer rose from the stage in a swirl of smoke and bright lights and gave Seacrest a double-cheek kiss as he introduced her to the room. Wearing a shimmering silver jumpsuit, Lopez explained why she, too, decided to join the show and what she thinks she can teach the wannabe singers in the audience in Los Angeles who were gathered to take their shot at the crown. “You have to concentrate on the moment,” she said. “Do the best you can and just live.” Seacrest noted that Lopez had been a mentor on the show and that she and husband Marc Anthony are fanatic “Idol” watchers when he asked Lopez what she was expecting from the upcoming season. “I’m looking for the next Michael Jackson,” she explained. “Like Randy [Jackson] said, we’re looking for the best American Idol ever. I’m really excited. I really am.” And, with that, Seacrest brought out the retooled judges’ panel by intoning his signature phrase: ” This is ‘American Idol!’ ” The announcement, which was also broadcast online, broke a summer’s worth of tension about who would replace departed judges Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi, killing rumors that had everyone from Elton John to Justin Timberlake, Harry Connick Jr., Usher, former judge Paula Abdul and returning executive producer Nigel Lythgoe possibly taking seats at the table next to the only remaining original adjudicator, Jackson. Though “Idol” brass did not reveal the details of the deal signed by actress/singer Lopez, 41, the former “In Living Color” Fly Girl and onetime “Idol” mentor will reportedly pull down $12 million a year for the job, while rock icon and Aerosmith singer Tyler is rumored to receive an $18 million payday for his first TV gig. As also rumored, the Lopez deal includes some perks, among them a “first-look” film agreement with 20th Century Fox with Lopez’s film company, Nuyorican Productions. “Jennifer is a true entertainment powerhouse who has made a tremendous impact on pop culture,” said Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman, chairmen and CEOs of Fox Filmed Entertainment. “Whether as an actress, singer, songwriter or producer, she is a fantastic creative talent, and we’re thrilled to be in business with her.” In a statement, Lopez, whose film career has stalled over the past few years thanks to a string of lukewarmly received romantic comedies, added, “As an artist and producer, I am excited to call Fox my home, and I am looking forward to working with Tom, Jim, Peter and the entire Fox team to create and produce the kinds of film and television projects that reflect my passion for entertaining audiences and telling great stories.” Also joining the show when it kicks off in January will be iconic Interscope Geffen A&M Records chairman Jimmy Iovine, who will serve as an in-house mentor on the show, after decades spent boosting the careers of everyone from U2 and Dr. Dre to Eminem, Lady Gaga and 50 Cent. Throughout the season, the show will go behind the scenes to watch as Iovine works with the contestants as part of a new partnership with Interscope , which will take over the promotion and distribution of albums by the “Idol” finalists. The judges’ panel isn’t the only thing changing for the show’s upcoming season. Last week, it was announced that “Idol” hopefuls could submit online audition videos to MySpace for the first time. The show also dropped its age limit to 15 to make sure it doesn’t miss out on a potential Justin Bieber. T.I.’s Arrest Companion Indentified As Convicted Felon

Tip may have further violated probation by driving with Cortez ‘C-Rod’ Thomas, who was also in on rapper’s 2007 attempt to purchase illegal firearms. By Jayson Rodriguez T.I. Photo: Brad Barket/Getty Images T.I. might be in more trouble with the law than originally believed. According to reports, T.I. was accompanied by a convicted felon when he was pulled over and arrested in Los Angeles on September 1. It’s a strict no-no for convicted felons — Tip is also a felon — to associate with each other. Now, documents uncovered by TheSmokingGun.com reveal that the felon was reportedly Cortez “C-Rod” Thomas, the man who allegedly helped facilitate T.I.’s attempted illegal firearm purchase in October 2007, which led to the Atlanta MC’s most recent prison stint and subsequent probation. Thomas, according to records, allegedly assisted T.I. (born Clifford Harris) by transferring a wealth of cash to the rapper’s bodyguard. The bodyguard was later set up by federal officials and agreed to participate in a sting against the “Takers” star. Thomas was never charged in the incident, but he is named and information regarding his past is included in material related to T.I.’s original case. Thomas’ rap sheet includes drug charges and claims of physical intimidation; earlier this year, he was convicted on felony drugs and weapon charges and received 15 years probation. The new information adds to the case being mounted against T.I. In addition to the controlled substances found in his car — later identified as Ecstasy, marijuana — the rapper may have also had the opiate codeine in his system, according to TMZ . The Atlanta judge who oversaw T.I.’s gun case and structured an experimental plea deal with him has ordered the rapper to appear in court to explain his actions and make a case for why his behavior doesn’t violate the terms of his probation. “We are very disappointed in Mr. Harris’ recent conduct,” United States Attorney Sally Quillian Yates said in an e-mail to MTV News on Friday (September 17). “We will make our sentencing recommendation at the revocation hearing.” A hearing date for T.I. had not been scheduled at press time. T.I. Allegedly Had Codeine, Ecstasy, Marijuana During L.A. Arrest

Judge orders rapper to appear in court to explain why probation should not be revoked. By James Montgomery T.I. Photo: Moses Robinson/ WireImage When T.I. and wife Tameka “Tiny” Cottle were arrested in Los Angeles earlier this month, police originally charged them with possession of a controlled substance — a substance which would later be revealed to be Ecstasy . But according to new documents, that might not have been the only drug in their possession. The charges could send T.I. back to prison. According to documents obtained by E! Online late Thursday, T.I.’s probation officer reported that L.A. County Sherriff’s deputies also found codeine and marijuana in his possession during the arrest. In the initial report filed after the couple’s September 1 arrest, deputies said they pulled over their Maybach and then “smelled a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle.” The documents were filed as part of a summons issued on Thursday by U.S. District Judge Charles Pannel Jr., requiring T.I. to appear before the court to explain why his probation should not be revoked after the L.A. incident, the the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. The judge’s order lists three possible violations of his probation: possession of Ecstasy, testing positive for opiates and associating with a convicted felon. After T.I.’s arrest, TMZ posted photos of the Maybach that showed several Styrofoam cups in the cup holders. The Web site alleged that the cups contained sizzurp — a.k.a. codeine syrup. MTV News’ phone calls and an e-mail sent to a spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Correction — which handles probation supervision — were not responded to by press time. A message left for T.I. lawyer Don Samuel was also not returned, though in the days following the rapper’s arrest, Samuel told the Atlanta Journal Constitution that he was uncertain how the arrest would effect his client’s probation, saying “without knowing all the facts, it’s premature to speculate what the court is likely to do.” The summons does not set a date for T.I. to appear before the court.
