T.I. Has Long History Of Trouble With The Law

Rapper’s Wednesday arrest for drug possession was just the latest of several offenses. By Jayson Rodriguez T.I. Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images T.I.’s brilliant career has seen its fair share of interruptions, primarily due to legal troubles that have forced the rapper to take time away from the stage in order to sit behind bars. On Wednesday night, T.I. and his wife, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, were arrested for alleged drug possession in Los Angeles. The arrest is the latest in a series of offenses T.I. has been involved in during his lifetime. He was released from prison earlier this year stemming from an October 2007 arrest after he was busted attempting to illegally purchase firearms . T.I.’s 366-day sentence was his most infamous to date. Although he served less than a year in prison and finished his sentence at a halfway house, the case not only threatened to derail his career but, because he initially faced a lengthy sentence, could have seen him spend a large portion of his life incarcerated. Prior to his most recent prison term, T.I. found himself on the wrong side of the law on more than one occasion. He’s often referred to himself as a multiple felon in his rhymes. But T.I. has rarely been arrested on drug-related offenses; most of his troubles stem from gun busts. In fact, prosecutors in T.I.’s 2007 weapons case argued that the rapper had not faced the full-on consequences for a number of past offenses. They cited a December 2001 arrest for gun possession, a November 2002 instance where he was carrying a 10mm pistol and a 2004 bust during which authorities found a silencer-enhanced weapon, loads of ammunition and photos of T.I. handling guns. In 2004, T.I.’s pre-rap dealings finally caught up with him when he was busted on a parole violation just as his career was taking off on the heels of his breakout number, “Rubber Band Man.” The violation was in relation to a 1998 arrest and conviction in Georgia for distribution of cocaine, manufacturing and distributing a controlled substance and giving authorities a false name. T.I. was sentenced in that case to three years in prison and was released after serving one year . Before his most recent stint in jail, T.I. seemed to place his past in the context of his bright future in hip-hop. He told a group of reporters, fans and family members gathered at the Atlanta courthouse where he was sentenced that he was ready to begin the next phase of his life as a responsible adult . “Although I am not thrilled about my next year and a day, I am pleased that I am beginning the process of putting this all behind me,” he said. “Thank you, and I apologize to my family, to the young men, young women that I mentor. I hope that I can keep at least one, if not a million or more, from going down a similar path. I just want to say thank you.” Since he’s been free, the rapper has repeatedly owned up to his mistakes and vowed to stay on the straight-and-narrow path. Just last month while appearing on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” to promote his movie “Takers,” T.I. opened up about his time behind bars. The rapper said he mentored other inmates in an effort to get them to make smarter choices upon their releases. “In my stay there, while I was there, I just noticed that so many cats that I was around was like, ‘When I get out I don’t know what I’m gonna do,’ ” he explained. T.I. then said he went to the warden and proposed a class that hoped would “change criminal ways of thinking.” Related Photos T.I. And Tameka ‘Tiny’ Cottle Related Artists T.I.

Diddy ‘Went Crazy’ For Nelly’s ‘1000 Stacks’

Track from Nelly’s upcoming 5.0 samples B.I.G.’s ‘Everyday Struggle.’ By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Matt Elias Nelly Photo: MTV News Nelly contributed to Biggie’s posthumous album Duets: The Final Chapter on the standout track “Nasty Girl,” but apparently the St. Louis rapper didn’t get enough of the Brooklyn star with that collaboration. For his forthcoming project, 5.0, Nelly sampled the late rapper’s vocals from Biggie’s song “Everyday Struggle” for his own “1000 Stacks.” B.I.G.’s lines “At last, I’m literally loungin’ black/ Sitting back, counting double-digit thousand stacks” will be used as the hook — with Diddy’s blessing, of course. “I did this beat with my man Don Vito and it had this Biggie sample in it, and when I heard it, I was like, whoa,” Nelly told MTV News on the set of his “Just a Dream” video shoot. “It was bananas. I let Puff hear the song. I told him, ‘I got something that I think you’re gonna love, and I think we can smash it out together.’ And he was like, ‘Let me hear it.’ I played it for him and he went crazy. We put it together and it came out crazy. “I feel real honored to be on a B.I. sample,” he added. Nelly is enthusiastic by the positive response to the album’s first two singles, “Just a Dream” and “Tippin’ in Da Club,” especially after the lukewarm reception to his last solo set, 2008’s Brass Knuckles. The former just cracked the Top 10 on Billboard ‘s Digital Songs chart, landing at the #8 slot. “It’s great,” Nelly said. “It’s always great when your fans come out and support [you] any time in your career. But definitely after 10 years, and when you haven’t been quite on the scene as much as your fans would like you to, but when they do get a glimpse of you and they feel good, it also makes you feel good.” Related Artists Nelly Diddy

Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream Ends Eminem’s Chart Run

Fantasia’s Back to Me lands at #2, pushing Em’s Recovery to #3 on Billboard 200 albums chart. By Gil Kaufman Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream Photo: Capitol Records All good things must come to an end and it looks like Katy Perry might be the one to stop Eminem ‘s record-setting run at the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart. As expected, Perry’s Teenage Dream will block Eminem from lodging his eighth week at #1 on next week’s Billboard chart by selling 192,000 copies of her second official major label album, or more than four times as many as her first disc, One of the Boys, sold (47,000) in its first week two years ago. According to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, Perry isn’t the only one who bested Eminem. Former “American Idol” winner Fantasia bounces back from a dark personal period that included a recent suicide attempt by landing at #2 with Back to Me on sales of 117,000, which pushes Em’s Recovery down to its lowest chart position to date, #3, on sales of 98,000. There are some other newcomers in the top 10, though, including Usher , whose Versus mini-album comes in at #4 (46,000), followed by country rock act Little Big Town ‘s The Reason Why (42,000), the Randy Rogers Band ‘s Burning the Day (#8, 29,000) and hard rockers the Devil Wears Prada , whose Zombie EP sneaks in at #10 thanks to just under 25,000 units shifted. The rest of the top 10: Kem , Intimacy (#6, 30,000); Justin Bieber , My World 2.0 (#7, 29,000); and Ray LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs , God Willin’ & the Creek Don’t Rise (#9, 28,000). After a nice run in the top 10 for three weeks, the Arcade Fire ‘s Suburbs falls nine spots to #16 (21,000) as they pass the 250,000 mark, while Usher’s five-month-old Raymond v. Raymond disc has a nice resurgence thanks to his new deluxe edition with seven new songs and a remix, surging up 12 spots to #19 as sales pick up by 57 percent to 20,000. Beloved indie folkie Sufjan Stevens has a strong showing at #27 with All Delighted People (15,000), as do college rock faves Ra Ra Riot , whose Orchard lands at #36 (10,000). Though his single “Cooler Than Me” has lit up the charts all summer, Mike Posner ‘s major label debut, 31 Minutes to Takeoff , has slid steadily down the chart since its debut two weeks ago, falling another 26 spots to #72 as sales dip to less than 6,000. The news is the same on the iTunes singles and albums charts as Perry took over the pole position on both with the album and the title track single. Em hangs in at #2 on the album tally, followed by the Rogers Band, Fantasia, Mumford & Sons’ Sigh No More, Usher’s Versus, Stevens, Never Shout Never’s Harmony, LaMontagne, and the Devil Wears Prada. Though iTunes does not divulge sales data, it was a good week for Perry, as her single led a group that was relatively unchanged from the week before, with Taio Cruz at #2 with “Dynamite,” followed by Bruno Mars’ “Just the Way You Are,” Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie,” Enrique Iglesias’ fist-pumping anthem “I Like It,” Usher’s “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love,” Nelly’s “Just a Dream,” B.o.B’s “Magic,” Ke$ha’s “Take It Off” and newcomer Kid Cudi with the Kanye collabo “Erase Me.” Perry should be able to retain her perch next week, as the new faces in the crowd include the latest from Disturbed , the Goo Goo Dolls , Fabolous , Papa Roach and Lyfe Jennings . Green Day Recording Live Album

Band announced live disc at show last week in Denver. By Gil Kaufman Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Photo: Shirlaine Forrest/ WireImage It’s been less than five years since their first official live album, but Green Day are already working on a second one. Singer Billie Joe Armstrong announced at a show in Denver, Colorado, on Friday that the group is recording performances for a follow-up to 2005’s Bullet in a Bible. The veteran punk trio has only released one new studio album since Bible came out, last year’s song cycle 21st Century Breakdown , but Armstrong hinted at the show that the new live disc might contain some rarities when he set up the unreleased gem “Cigarettes and Valentines.” “Hey, I just want to tell you something right now. We’re recording a live f—ing album right now,” Armstrong told the crowd at the Comfort Dental Amphitheater in Denver on Saturday, video of which was posted on YouTube . “So check it out, we’re gonna play a brand-new song. … It ain’t that brand-new. This song is called ‘Cigarettes and Valentines.’ ” The band then broke into the classic three-chord blitzkrieg, which, as Armstrong noted, is not exactly new, but hasn’t officially been released. The tune was recorded in 2003 while Green Day were working on the follow-up to the 2002 B-sides compilation Shenanigans for an album that was supposed to bear the same title. But after the master tapes for the project were stolen from the studio, Green Day scrapped the whole thing and got to work on the disc that would revive their career and make them international superstars, American Idiot. A spokesperson for the band’s label could not be reached at press time to confirm the recording of the live album or provide details on when the disc might be released. Lindsay Lohan Tells Vanity Fair: “I Want My Career Back”

Troubled actress says she’s learned from her mistakes. By Gil Kaufman Lindsay Lohan on the cover of the October issue of Vanity Fair Photo: Condé Nast In the first major interview published since Lindsay Lohan spent time in jail and rehab, the troubled actress told Vanity Fair that she’s determined to get her career back on track. She also addressed suggestions that she was on a downward spiral of drug and alcohol addiction and talked about how heartrending it was to see her younger sister Ali in the courtroom during her sentencing earlier this summer. “I don’t care what anyone says. I know that I’m a damn good actress. … And I know that in my past I was young and irresponsible — but that’s what growing up is. You learn from your mistakes,” said Lohan, who can be seen in “Machete” and who is slated to start working on the Linda Lovelace biography “Inferno” in November. Lohan also spoke candidly about her alleged struggles with illicit substances and alcohol in the interview, which was conducted one week before she spent 13 days of a 90-day sentence in jail. “If I were the alcoholic everyone says I am, then putting a [SCRAM] bracelet on would have ended me up in detox, in the emergency room, because I would have had to come down from all the things that people say I’m taking and my father says I’m taking–so that says something, because I was fine,” Lohan told the magazine about the alcohol-detection bracelet she was required to wear. Her SCRAM bracelet was triggered on the night of the MTV Movie Awards in June; her lawyer said the cause was an accident in which someone spilled a drink on Lohan’s ankle . But that incident helped set off the chain of events that landed Lohan in jail for 13 days of a 90-day sentence on a probation violation from her 2007 DUI conviction. “I think everyone has their own addictions and hopefully learns how to get past them,” Lohan explained. “I think my biggest focus for myself is learning how to continue to get through the trauma that my father has caused in my life.” Lohan is estranged from father Michael Lohan, but she said watching the reactions from him and her sister Ali when the actress was sentenced to three months in jail was incredibly difficult. The article describes Lohan, 24, as “visibly upset” when talking about watching her sister cry in the courtroom, but it notes that she was torn by Michael Lohan’s presence at the hearing. “The worst part of it is you turn around and you see your dad crying and normally you’d be, like, happy that your father’s there,” she said. “But then he has to go and do an interview right after.” Though Lohan was reportedly taking a number of prescription medications before reporting to jail, the “Mean Girls” star adamantly denied ever abusing prescription drugs . “I never have — never in my life. I have no desire to,” she said. “That’s not who I am. I’ve admitted to the things that I’ve done–to, you know, dabbling in certain things and trying things ’cause I was young and curious and thought it was like, OK, ’cause other people were doing it and other people put it in front of me. And I see what happened in my life because of it.” In addition to serving a short sentence in jail, Lohan was sprung from a 90-day rehab sentence early . Like a lot of young stars who come to Hollywood, Lohan said she got caught up in the party scene and ended up running with the wrong crowd. She blamed that group for some of her troubles, saying they pretended to care about her for the wrong reasons and were only there for the party. When she first moved to Los Angeles as a teenager, Lohan said the atmosphere was,” very go-go-go and I had a lot of responsibility; and I think just the second I didn’t have [structure] anymore — I was 18, 19 — with a ton of money and no one really here to tell me that I couldn’t do certain things … And I see where that’s gotten me now, and I don’t like it.” And while she denied tipping off the paparazzi to her whereabouts to get more press, Lohan confessed that she often relied on tabloids as her main news source and that she was influenced by the blanket coverage of other bad girls like Britney Spears. “I would look up to those girls,” she said. “And I would be like, ‘I want to be like that.’ ” The interview with Lohan runs in the October issue of Vanity Fair , which hits newsstands in New York and Los Angeles on Thursday (September 2) and nationwide on September 7. Yes! Oh please. Call [show creator] Ryan [Murphy] up! I was gonna get up on the stage tonight with them and start dancing,” Wilson teased to MTV News at the HBO Emmy afterparty, where she tried to think up what her choice tune for the show would be. “For ‘Glee’? Inside Miley Cyrus And Liam Hemsworth’s Breakup

Hemsworth reportedly seen in the company of other women while his ‘Last Song’ co-star worked on a movie in Detroit. By Jocelyn Vena Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth have seemingly sung their “Last Song,” and new details about the couple’s split are surfacing. According to sources, 20-year-old Hemsworth may have been stepping out on Cyrus, who has been focusing on her career. E! News reports that earlier this month, Hemsworth was seen flirting with admirers at a party in Newport Beach and hooking up with another young woman while partying in Huntington Beach during the US Open Surf Competition. Cyrus, 17, has been in Detroit filming the flick “LOL.” “Ever since she left for Detroit, Miley has been super focused on her work,” a source described as an “insider close to the former couple” told E! News. “Liam wanted more, but she’s 17 and has other priorities right now. He’s been a distraction. [Miley’s] not with anybody else.” Despite that assertion, rumors are now circulating that Cyrus may be spending quality time with co-star Adam Sevani. A photo of the pair allegedly hanging out on the set of “LOL” has circulated, although it is unclear if it is actually Sevani in the picture. Hemsworth, who was seen hanging out alone at a Dave Matthews Band concert earlier this week, has reportedly visited the set of “LOL” twice. “Both visits were only about 24 hours in length — by Miley’s choice,” the insider told E! News. “She is not ready to settle down, and Liam’s not a happy camper.” Breakup rumors have plagued the duo in the past, and they have been denied by Cyrus. And E! News’ source said that the couple may not be completely over just yet: “They’re both young. To say they are done forever would be premature, but it’s safe to say for now they are doing their own thing.” However, Hemsworth’s rep . Cyrus’ refused to comment.
