Katy Perry, Fantasia Look To Unseat Eminem On Charts

Perry’s Teenage Dream expected to take top spot from Recovery. By Gil Kaufman Katy Perry Photo: Chelsea Lauren/ FilmMagic It’s been a long, record-setting summer for Eminem’s smash Recovery , but Slim Shady’s chart dominance could be challenged next week by two strong women with something to prove. Em’s held the #1 spot on the album charts for seven of the nine weeks Recovery has been in stores, with its other two weeks spent at #2. But he could be pushed down to the #3 position next week thanks to the debuts of Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream and Fantasia’s Back to Me , according to a Billboard . Citing unnamed “industry prognosticators,” the trade pub put Perry on track to sell between 170,000 and 200,000 copies of Teenage Dream by the end of this week’s reporting period on Sunday (August 29). Fantasia, meanwhile, is on target for a #2 bow and sales in the 120,000-140,000 range. This week, Eminem had little major competition, and he was able to hold on to the #1 slot with 116,000 sales of Recovery . For Perry, the debut would easily best the chart arrival of her breakthrough 2008 effort One of the Boys , which debuted on the charts and peaked at #9 with 47,000 sales; it went on to sell more than one million copies in the U.S. and seven million worldwide. Perry is looking to both beat the sophomore slump and cement her status as one of the world’s pop icons. A #2 debut would also be a high-water mark for Fantasia, who has struggled through a difficult period lately that included a suicide attempt and tabloid headlines regarding her relationship with a man in the midst of a divorce. If the former “American Idol” champ snags the #2 spot it would mark the best chart debut of her career, though her previous album, Fantasia , sold 133,000 copies when it reached #19 spot in 2006. While numbers were not available at press time, it’s even possible that Slim Shady could get a bit of a run from Usher, whose new EP, Versus , also dropped this week. Cee-Lo ‘F— You’ Collabo Was ‘Perfect Marriage,’ Bruno Mars Says

‘It was a dream session come true,’ Mars says of creating track with Smeezingtons producing partner and Cee-Lo. By Jayson Rodriguez Bruno Mars Photo: MTV News Bruno Mars and production partner Philip Lawrence of the Smeezingtons are the pair behind Cee-Lo’s potty-mouthed breakout hit, “F— You.” The track is equal parts brutal and comical and, according to Mars, the duo’s collaboration with the Gnarls Barkley/ Goodie Mob member was ideal. Mars and Lawrence have long been influenced by Cee-Lo and the rapper/singer took to their tune like Angelina Jolie did to Brad Pitt. “Talk about the perfect marriage, we been fans of Cee-Lo for real,” Bruno Mars told MTV News. “And we became labelmates and I was just feeding that to them,” he said of urging the record label to smooth the way for a collabo.” ‘We got to get in. I know he’s working on something, we got to do something.’ So he comes in the session, and it was one of the most organic sessions. “We wrote a song and it’s not for radio, obviously, with the title. We’re probably gonna have to work on that. But it was a dream session come true; that was the idea collaboration. Everyone was just putting their minds together and [we came] up with one of our favorite tracks we’ve ever done.” The production duo’s recent credits include tracks for Mary J. Blige, B.o.B and Travie McCoy, with Mars lending his vocals to McCoy’s “Billionaire” and B.o.B’s VMA-nominated smash “Nothin’ On You.” But the profanity-laced record was cooked up three years ago when Cee-Lo first began working on his sophomore solo effort, The Lady Killer, due December 7. The Smeezingtons delivered a rough sketch of the song that included production and a reference hook. Cee-Lo heard the music and instantly wanted the number, Mars said. “He came in and we started singing it for him,” Mars said. “And he’s just, ‘I love that, man. That’s beautiful.’ And we said, ‘Let’s go,’ and that’s all we really had — just that concept — and now it’s blowing up.” Have you heard Cee-Lo’s “F— You”? Tell us what you think in the comments! Actress was released from court-ordered rehab Tuesday. Lohan, 24, who previously logged 13 days in jail on a 90-day sentence for a probation violation, faces a number of rigorous requirements if she wants to stay on the outside and not face another, longer term in jail.

Can Lindsay Lohan Make A Comeback?

‘She’ll either be forgotten, she’ll be dead, tragically, or she’ll have an Academy Award,’ one PR expert tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman Lindsay Lohan Photo: OutOfSightMedia/ Getty Images Troubled actress Lindsay Lohan has completed her jail term (13 of 90 days) and, on Tuesday, her court-ordered stint at an inpatient rehab facility (23 of 90 days). So now that she’s back on the outside, can the onetime rising Hollywood starlet get her career groove back? Though the annals of Tinseltown are littered with stories of crackups that actors and actresses were unable to bounce back from, Lohan need look no further than Oscar winner Robert Downey Jr. for proof that once-left-for-dead careers trashed by drugs and erratic behavior can indeed be revived and thrive once again.

Fantasia’s ‘Behind The Music’ Addresses Career Highs, Life Lows

‘American Idol’ alum opens up about suicide attempt, teenage rebelliousness. By Kara Warner Fantasia on “Behind The Music” Photo: VH1 When Fantasia Barrino told America that she had “been through some stuff” upon winning the “American Idol” crown in 2004, she was putting it mildly. That didn’t even include her most recent struggles with a drug overdose and being accused of breaking up a marriage . On VH1’s latest episode of “Behind the Music,” which premiered Tuesday night (August 24), viewers learned that, although the spunky “Idol” winner has suffered several lows recently, she is on her way to a full recovery and proud of herself for being who she is. The episode opened with a detailed account of Barrino’s shocking overdose, in which she said she made attempted to end her life because she “didn’t have any fight” in her . “At that moment I didn’t care about anything. I just wanted out,” she said, boldly admitting that the overdose wasn’t at all an accident and that she was not happy when she woke up in the hospital and realized her suicide attempt “didn’t work” — until her nurse, Melody, told her to get up and fulfill her destiny. From there, the episode delves deep into Fantasia’s North Carolina roots — beginning with when she began singing (at age 5), then tracing her first love (ex-boyfriend Brandel Shouse, the father of her daughter, Zion), which would later turn into an abusive relationship. “He was somebody I was crazy about,” Barrino said. “The first guy who showed me attention.” Barrino recounted how in high school she started to crave attention in other ways, by wearing tight clothing, acting like she was already an adult, until her world was turned upside down after she was raped at her high school at age 14. “I didn’t even cry my way home,” she said of her feelings after the assault. “I was numb, very numb, confused, I just felt nasty. Disgusting.” Although she didn’t press charges, Barrino said she was unable to continue going to school because of the taunts and harassment from her classmates, so she dropped out and then “turned into a rebel,” until her hard-partying and careless ways landed her pregnant at 17. Unable to support herself and her daughter, Barrino began singing professionally, taking any gigs that paid, until she saw an episode of “American Idol” and fought her way into an audition. The rest of Barrino’s story is familiar to “Idol” fans: She was crowned the winner of season three, which she called “the best day of my life,” signed to a record contract with Clive Davis and was the first new artist to have a single debut at #1. Barrino’s post-“Idol” career path wasn’t smooth sailing, however. The young singer once again found herself nearly bankrupt after dealing with corrupt managers and legal woes, but she received new hope after being cast in “A Color Purple” on Broadway . From there, the episode delved into the star’s recent lows — a scare with throat tumors, which she had surgically removed — and her relationship with Antwaun Cook and the lawsuit from his ex-wife, Paula, which led to her suicide attempt last week. “I realize how people end up in the grave because of that one moment,” she said of that dark day. “Feeling like they can’t go on [because] it’s too heavy, that’s somewhere I never want to go again.” Fortunately, the episode ended on a high note, with Barrino proudly receiving her GED and walking in a graduation ceremony with the 2010 class of her former high school, St. Andrews. “I know that I am beautiful and special,” Barrino said. “I am who I am — and that’s what makes me Fantasia.” What did you think about Fantasia’s story on “Behind the Music”? Schultz Guest: Beck & Koch Brothers Plotting To Provoke Race Riots

I was going to say the left has now officially hit rock bottom.  But it’s still a long way to Election Day for the desperate Dems . . . On this evening’s Ed Show, trial-lawyer guest Mike Papantonio accused Glenn Beck and the Koch brothers of consciously plotting, via Beck’s DC rally, to provoke race riots. In Papantonio’s fevered mind, the Beck-Koch axis is attempting to recreate the race riots of 1968 . . MIKE PAPANTONIO:  There’s no difference. If you even look at the money that’s behind the tea-bagger movement, it’s the same money that was behind the Richard Nixon movement, the fear movement, that took place back then. ED SCHULTZ: So you would say, and I don’t want to put words in your mouth, is this about self-promotion for the guy who’s organizing this, or is it really about restoring honor? PAPANTONIO:   Well it has nothing about restoring honor. It’s a bunch of inheritance–here, if you follow the money, Ed, it’s about inheritance babies, the Koch brothers, inheritance babies, who don’t want to pay taxes, they want conservatives in power. The way you get conservatives in power is to scare the hell out of Americans.  I’ll tell you what Glenn Beck is hoping. He’s hoping that two blocks away from the Lincoln Memorial, that African-Americans are going to be so angry about what he’s done on that important day, when Martin–Martin Luther King stood up and gave the most important speech of his career.  And here you have this buffoon, this demagogue, that’s going to be preaching hate.  What does that do to the African-Americans that are two blocks away, listening to this hate speech? Any way you dress it up, Sarah Palin can’t help herself. Glenn Beck can’t help himself. But you know what? They’re not the money behind all this.  The money behind this are the Koch brothers who put $100 million into spreading hate in this country.  And they want the same divisiveness, they the same ugliness that we saw in the Watts riots to emerge , so the next conservative movement can come into power.  It’s the same blueprint, Ed. I promise you: it’s the same blueprint. Mike seems awfully interested in “money,” mentioning it four times in his rant. Not surprising from a trial-lawyer promoting big class action lawsuits stemming from the BP spill.  As for the “self-promotion” that Schultz decries,  Papantonio’s incessant Ed Show appearances are little less than infomercials for his legal services.   All of that didn’t stop Papantonio from slurring Beck, the Koch brothers, and by extension the Tea Party movement [that he twice called “tea-baggers”] as attempting to provoke race riots. This is what the Dems, and their backers in the trial bar, have been reduced to, facing electoral disaster down the line. Note: the Koch brothers, libertarian-oriented conservatives, have become a favorite whipping boy of the left.  Have a look at P.J. Gladnick’s piece for a description of the way The New Yorker slimed them.
