Scoop DeVille Is Crafting A ‘Futuristic’ Sound That’s All His Own

‘People are like, ‘What did you sample?’ I’m like, ‘Uriah Heep,’ ‘ Scoop says of mining rock collection for rap bangers. By Shaheem Reid Scoop DeVille Photo: Tokyo Sex Whale Records Behind the Beats: Scoop DeVille Frost is such a veteran, he’s an O.G. among O.G.s. Dr. Dre used to be his DJ back in the ’80s. And when Frost (originally known as Kid Frost) pioneered in 1992 with his Hispanic Causing Panic debut, his son, little Scoop DeVille was only 2 years old. In 2009, Scoop broke through himself by producing Snoop Dogg’s blockbuster “I Wanna Rock.” Everyone from Jay-Z to Ludacris eventually jumped on the track in various official and unofficial remixes. Then he gave Fat Joe two bangers in “(Ha Ha) Slow Down” and “No Problems,” and laced N.O.R.E. with the Flavor Flav-inspired “Nutcracker.” “I don’t see Scoop as a real young producer really,” Frost said, sitting next to his son in Scoop’s Los Angeles studio. “I see him more as an old soul that’s been in it for a long, long time. People are just barely finally discovering his sound, but man, he’s been harboring a fresh, fresh sound in him for a long time. It’s finally starting to sail now. It’s finally starting to leave port and people are starting to jump on it.” Scoop gives props to his pops for keeping music around him that would later influence his career. “That’s all I was around man,” Scoop says. “I was fortunate to not have that gang life and I got to be around the music and school. So I got to learn all of the hip-hop history and I got to meet a lot of these people who were hip-hop celebrities. Like the Eazy-E’s, Ice T, and Snoop and Dre and it’s like the list goes on, man. From people who were on the scene … everybody, there’s numerous people. I mean my music, just my hard drive and my brain is crazy: I have like classic rock. There’s a crazy record, it’s not just hip-hop, it’s like [other genres] because that’s what made hip-hop too” “I never really played that much rap in my house,” Frost smiled. Instead, Scoop, who also rhymes, picked up most of his hip-hop away from home. “I got to learn my own stuff to a point where I was writing my own lyrics and recording my own songs,” Scoop explained. “I would go back to a lot of old stuff. Lots of old-school records, ’70s funk, reggae, I mean, there’s so many, the Doors, Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac, Bob Marley, all that. Led Zeppelin, Beatles — that [sound] was a big influence on me, just the way that their music sounds so monstrous. I would love to take that and incorporate that in hip-hop. So now I got records with Xzibit that got crazy rock samples in them and people are like, ‘What did you sample?’ I’m like, ‘Uriah Heep. You don’t even know what that is.’ That’s hard rock heavy metal back in the day, 60’s. And you know psychedelic, all that stuff. I love all kinds of music.” Next Wave of Flav : On 50 Cent : “I haven’t done anything with 50 yet. We just met. I worked with [Shady Records A&R] Riggs {Morales]. I was trying to get on Em’s project a while back. We got a lot of things in the works with them. We try to keep it cool with everybody. It’s definitely a new sound what we’re trying to do. I wanna have everybody involved at all angles. It’s good to see everybody come around. I definitely played them a few records. They’re not looking for anything like I’ve been doing. They’re looking for something real different. The records I’m playing for them are different, futuristic.” On Busta Rhymes : “I got a few records on this new album. When that comes out, it’s going to take the beat stuff to a whole ‘nother level. This record he has coming out, we did three joints for it. Oh my God, the sh– I gave Bus is ridiculous. I’ve met cats like David Banner and Swizz Beatz. They all got records on the album but they all say, ‘You got the craziest record on the album.’ ” On the Clipse : “That was amazing. When we were in the lab, we were going beat for beat. They were picking everything. It came to a point where they were like, ‘You’re 10 for 10.’ There was like 15, 16 beats and they were like, ‘We’re taking all these beats.’ That was dope because they get beats from Pharrell. That’s the number-one producer to me. Just to get that response from them and their management. That was a dope experience. They were a big inspiration for me making beats in high school.” On Raekwon the Chef : “Rae’s a real cool cat. We were in the lab until 3 in the morning listening to beats. He took records for a new Wu record, he took records for him and Ghost. He’s gonna put me in contact with Ghost. Rae is cool. I have a lot of records for him, a lot of real grimy records.” Hottest Streak Thus Far? He’s just getting started ladies and germs. Is CNN Perpetuating the ‘Obama is Muslim’ Meme? Chyron: ‘W.H.: Pres. Obama Isn’t Muslim’

Every time the question about President Barack Obama’s faith is brought up, the wizards of smart in the mainstream media get up in arms about “right-wingers” or “tea partiers” perpetuating those allegations. But is it possible that by devoting so much attention to these issues of Obama’s faith and his citizenship, the media are creating the very feeding frenzy they’re appalled by? On CNN’s Aug. 19 “The Situation Room,” host Wolf Blitzer led his program off with at what first glance is a startling chyron: “W.H.: Pres. Obama Isn’t Muslim”. That graphic was in response to a recent Pew Research Center poll that found 18 percent of respondents thought Obama was Muslim. Later in the program, Blitzer went to his panel – CNN political analyst James Carville and Washington Times columnist and Heritage Foundation fellow Tony Blankley. Initially Carville said he didn’t have a clear explanation. Video with partial transcript and commentary below fold “I don’t other than the fact people are just willing to believe anything or there are a lot of stupid people out there,” Carville said. “I really don’t have an explanation, just like I don’t have an explanation for the fact that you see some of these polls that a quarter of the people believe he was born outside the country. I’m just as flummoxed as the next person.” Blankley cited an instance in 19 th Century England, which people questioned the faith of British Prime Minster Benjamin Disraeli. “I would compare it to what happened to Benjamin Disraeli, the British Prime Minister in the mid-19 th Century,” Blankley said. “He was suspected of being a Jew all through his career. His dad had been Jewish, but he baptized young Benjamin in the Church of England and he remained a practicing Christian with Jewish ancestry. I think it’s a similar situation with Obama.” And according Blankley, although he didn’t condone that belief, he suggested the same sort of circumstances were in play with the 44 th President of the United States. “His father was obviously Muslim and so that suspicious is there,” Blankley continued. “And then I think — what’s interesting is the numbers have gotten worse for him since he’s been President and I think some of his decisions, the outreach to Islam, good as it may be, wise as it may be, encourages some. His getting into a fight with the Israeli prime minister and his lack of attending church conspicuously, although Reagan, the President I worked for, didn’t go to church much because he said it would interrupt the congregation. So, there are good reasons for it, but the public is going to think what it’s going to think and he’s not made it easier.” Carville wasn’t buying it. Instead he just chalked the public up as “stupid” and willing to believe anything. He conflated the argument with questions about the President’s birth certificate. “I guess I would dispute, Tony — I don’t think the public thinks,” Carville said. “How can they think he wasn’t born in the United States, I mean with two birth announcements in both Honolulu papers. Again, I don’t have an explanation, and the quality of information to people today is exponentially higher than it was in 19 th century England. But again you’ve got to assume some people are just willing to believe anything and some people are out and out stupid. I wish I had a better explanation for it.” Despite the explanations (or lack of) from esteemed panelists, it’s possible the media themselves are to blame. By consistently using questions about Obama’s faith and his citizenship as fodder to demean conservatives, specifically the Tea Party movement and thereby creating a general mistrust by saying vile things, have the mainstream media perpetuated the very allegations they are abhorred by?

Lindsay Lohan Offered $1 Million For First Post-Jail Interview

Actress has reportedly not yet accepted offer from OK! magazine. By Eric Ditzian Lindsay Lohan Photo: Stephen Shugerman/Getty Images If anyone was wondering how Lindsay Lohan would make a living after her stay in jail and in-patient rehab, we now have our answer. The 24-year-old actress, who hasn’t headlined a theatrical release since 2007, is set to net a lucrative payday for her first post-sentence interview. OK! magazine has offered Lohan $1 million for the interview, according to The Hollywood Reporter . Lohan has reportedly not yet agreed to the deal — she’s still receiving treatment at a rehab facility run by UCLA Medical Center — but she will likely be released well before completing the court-ordered 90-day treatment plan, instead entering an out-patient program. Thus we might be hearing from Lohan — and the actress might be cashing a hefty paycheck — sooner than previously expected. Lohan, of course, won’t be the first celebrity to be offered a big payoff following a personal scandal or tragedy. In 2007, after serving a short jail stint, Paris Hilton was reportedly offered as much as $1 million from NBC for her first post-jail interview before that deal fell through and she appeared on “Larry King Live,” reportedly without payment. NBC also reportedly paid $2 million for an interview with Prince William and Prince Harry and the American rights to broadcast a concert in honor of the late Diana, Princess of Wales. Whichever outlet ultimately lands the Lohan interview, it should expect to pony up some serious cash, as the actress’ professional opportunities are limited at this point. She was fired from “The Other Side” in April, with the film’s director, David Michaels, saying that “producers of the movie have reported that financiers have been resistant to finance the movie with Lindsay in the lead role.” He added that Lohan was simply “not bankable.” She does have a small role in Robert Rodriguez’s “Machete,” but it’s not clear she’ll be free to promote the film. Meanwhile, the filmmakers behind “Inferno,” a biopic in which Lohan is set to star as 1970s porn star Linda Lovelace , remain committed to the actress, though the indie flick will hardly deliver a significant payday. In addition to the interview paycheck, THR reports that Lohan could attract appearance fees in New York and Los Angeles that range anywhere from $25,000 to $100,000. Yet it remains to be seen whether Lohan can make the necessary personal and professional changes to stay out of legal trouble in the future, especially as she heads back into the media spotlight so soon after jail and rehab. “She can take this and she can learn from it and it becomes a cathartic event in her life,” Howard Bragman, founder of publicity firm Fifteen Minutes, told MTV News. “The one thing we haven’t heard from Lindsay is ‘I’m sorry, I have a problem, I’m going to resolve it.’ She doesn’t have PR problems, she has life problems. You can’t fix your problems until you admit you have them. I think she needs a lot of therapy. She needs to let her career be second and her life be first.” Related Videos Lindsay Lohan: Crime And Punishment Related Photos Lindsay Lohan’s ‘Inferno’ Photo Shoot Lindsay Lohan Goes To Court The Highs And Lows Of Lindsay Lohan Related Artists Lindsay Lohan

‘Expendables’ Prove Dependable At Weekend Box Office

Sylvester Stallone’s throwback action flick takes #1 spot over ‘Eat Pray Love,’ ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.’ By Josh Wigler Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone and Randy Couture in “The Expendables” Photo: Lionsgate #1 “The Expendables” ($35 million) #2 “Eat Pray Love” ($23.7 million) #3 “The Other Guys” ($18 million) #4 “Inception” ($11.4 million) #5 “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” ($10.5 million) Sylvester Stallone has still got it. The aging actor and filmmaker, most popular for his starring roles in the “Rocky” and “Rambo” franchises, brought the pedal-to-the-metal, blood-pumping (and spewing) antics of 1980s action cinema back to theaters this past weekend with “The Expendables,” taking home first place during a very crowded box-office session. A star-studded affair featuring various macho men from Jason Statham to Dolph Lundgren, “The Expendables” won over audiences nationwide for a grand total of $35 million in its opening weekend. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Stallone described the success of “The Expendables” as the “proudest moment” of his career, second only to “Rocky Balboa” in 2006 — and with box-office success currently in the palm of his hand, Stallone is using that energy to dream up an “Expendables” sequel. “It’s plotted out in my mind’s eye,” the “Expendables” actor/director/writer told THR. “I believe this group has to continue to evolve; it just can’t become the same people. So how do you get new people introduced into the group, and how do you have some of the other people leaving? Those are the challenges.” Landing in second place was “Eat Pray Love,” the Julia Roberts-starring flick with a target audience considerably less bloodthirsty than those who saw “The Expendables.” Directed by “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy and with an all-star cast that includes James Franco and Javier Bardem, Roberts’ latest earned $23.7 million over the weekend, a modest success given the film’s tough competition and relatively lackluster reviews . Indeed, reviews weren’t too important for this most recent box-office frame as the critically acclaimed “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” premiered in fifth place with only $10.5 million to its name. Based on the widely adored comic book series created by Bryan Lee O’Malley, “Scott Pilgrim” draws inspiration from various areas of popular culture — video games especially — to create a hilarious and action-packed tale of a young misguided soul’s quest to win his dream girl’s heart. Some fans have argued that numerous free screeners prior to the film’s release assisted in “Scott Pilgrim” ‘s box-office demise, though it’s very likely that the comic book adaptation will have a long life on DVD, Blu-ray and other formats, thanks to its cultish fanbase. Upcoming Releases : Another crowded weekend looms with the Ice Cube-starring “Lottery Ticket” and blood-soaked “Piranha 3D” leading the pack. Jason Bateman and Jennifer Aniston try their luck at love in “The Switch,” while Emma Thompson returns as “Nanny McPhee.” On Wednesday, the “Twilight” franchise gets a stake in the heart from parody flick “Vampires Suck.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Expendables,” “Eat Pray Love” and “The Other Guys.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Rick Ross Talks T.I., Jadakiss, Erykah Badu Callabos

‘The time was right,’ Ross says of Tip lacing ‘Maybach Music III.’ By Shaheem Reid Rick Ross Photo: MTV News Earlier this week, Erykah Badu released a video for the remix of “Window Seat” that features Rick Ross. That collaboration led to the singer appearing on Ross’ song “Maybach Music III,” which appears on his acclaimed new album Teflon Don . “She never really collaborated with a lot of artists outside of Outkast,” Ross explained. “Maybe another artist or two, [like] the Roots. It was always conscious music she was making. You know, a gritty street artist — that’s always a plus when you get to work with somebody with the flowers around them and [they’re] burning incense. And it’s positive.” Ross was a longtime admirer of Badu’s work, which made the idea of working with her intriguing. “Her music always attracted me; it was always attractive to my kind of music,” he said. “Once we collaborated with the ‘Window Seat’ remix … the lanes of communication was open, I was like, ‘Let’s do something different.’ ” The track, which was produced by the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, also features T.I. and Jadakiss. “I felt the time was right for me and T.I. [to work together],” the Bawse explained. “We had never personally collaborated with each other on a record one on one. Early on in my career, I had said [negative] things when I didn’t know him. Just us being bosses and us being leaders and us being examples, we bossed up. We both did. He came from home doing what he did. I did my thing.” But as time passed, the animosity waned, and Ross asked Tip to collaborate. “Just on a mutual respect for each other, I reached out to him. When I got that verse back, I was like, ‘He meant that.’ We had been seeing each other over a period of time, saluting each other, bumping into each other, he knew I was a fan of his. We captured that moment in time which was one of the dopest records. And that meant the most to me. I used to play that T.I. verse in my studio, like, ‘This set the tone, right here. It set the tone.’ It just felt good for the homie to lace me. I salute Tip.” Ross brought Jadakiss, a longtime friend, on “Maybach” as well. “Jada was always that New York underdog,” he said. “That next lyricist. You could be the hottest at the time, but if you slippin’, Jada is one record away. He’s a cool dude, somebody I got a mutual respect and a friendship with.” This week, Ross released a new track online, “Summer’s Mine,” where he takes aim at his competition. “Bitch I run the south/ I’m what you wanna be,” he raps. “This how you wanna live/ This what you wanna drive/ Be honest with yourself/ I’m who you idolize.” What do you think of Ross’ “Maybach Music III”? How does it rank with the previous tracks? Tell us in the comments!

Kanye West Says ‘Power’ Video ‘Basically A Trailer’ For Longer Clip

Chicago MC also calls his VMA stage-crashing incident ‘in poor taste,’ on New York radio. By Mawuse Ziegbe Kanye West Photo: Foc Kan/ Getty Images Kanye West dared to go where few rappers had gone before when he ditched his spit-fire lyricism for Auto-Tune-filtered vocals on his last album, 808s and Heartbreak. Now, in the lead-up to his upcoming album, the Chicago MC is pioneering the way hip-hop videos are made and consumed with his “moving painting” clip, “Power.” West, however, says that the 90-second video, which invokes cultural references from the Renaissance period to Greek mythology, is just a teaser for a much more ambitious project. “I’m working on a film idea for the movie now that you saw. The ‘Power’ piece was basically like a trailer or moving poster or moving portrait. It’s just a different take on the way to do videos,” Yeezy told New York radio station Power 105.1 on Thursday. The MC, who, as a rising rapper one flexed his painting and drawing skills for MTV , said the longer version will be packaged as a piece of kinetic art. “Actually, [we’re] doing a 40-minute version of it. It’s just a piece of moving art. It’s made for you to project it on your wall. We’re gonna do a DVD package where it will be kids’ first piece of actual art that they can buy and have in their home,” West explained. ‘Ye then described how he imagines the glacial narrative of “Power” will play out in the longer version: “Just picture the dude with the sword, two minutes of him. [He’s in] slow-motion, about to cut my head off. Then the girl just crawling on the ground, like slow-motion,” West said. The less-than-two-minute-long “Power” clip has stirred confusion among some fans who thought that the 90-second video was mistakenly cut short. However, ‘Ye explained that the technologically involved production process meant that the video would have to cut down on running time in order to bulk up on visual interest. “It just couldn’t have been longer. If it had been any longer, it wouldn’t even [have] been out by now,” ‘Ye laughed. “I see on Twitter [people are] like, ‘Man I’m waiting for the whole video,’ I’m like, ‘OK, it’s gonna be a long wait.’ ” Making the actual “Power” song was also very time-intensive and ‘Ye said that he spent thousands of hours tweaking the record. “A song like ‘Power’ took 5,000 thousand hours, like literally 5,000 man-hours to do this one record. That’s the amount of time I was putting into every song on the album,” West revealed. His latest single, “See Me Now,” was also a time-consuming enterprise. “The joint that we just dropped today, with Beyonc

Lady Gaga Says Her New Album Is ‘Utter Liberation’

Pop star tells i-D magazine she wants to ‘create the anthem for my generation.’ By James Dinh Lady Gaga Photo: Getty Images Lady Gaga may have caused a stir with her recent talk of sex and drug use, but the singer knows that in the end it all boils down to the music. In the pre-Fall issue of i-D magazine that surfaced online on Friday (August 13), the songstress opens up about what she has planned for her upcoming album. “The new album is my absolute greatest work I’ve ever done, and I’m so excited about it,” Gaga said of her still-untitled album. “The message, the melodies, the direction, the meaning, what it will mean to my fans and what it will mean to me in my own life — it’s utter liberation. I’m on the quest to create the anthem for my generation for the next decade, so that’s what I’ve done.” While the singer has frequently worked with producers like RedOne (“Bad Romance” and “Just Dance”), Gaga plans to keep her sound fresh with a line of new producers on the forthcoming project. But she’s keeping them a secret, saying, “I will never tell because as soon as I tell, everyone starts working with them. So all I can say is that nobody knows who they are. They’re all new.” And for those who were wondering if the Elton John-esque ballad “You and I” was an indication of the project’s sound, Gaga said, “It’s not totally indicative of the new album sound; it’s just a really big rock-and-roll hit.” The pop star confirmed that the song, which she first performed at Elton John’s White Tie and Tiara Ball in June, will appear on the LP. “I do have these hopes that it could be a great rock crossover record, so I’m going to put my producer’s hat on and get it to a place where I feel like it could reach the masses,” she said. “It’s a beautiful, beautiful lyric and melody. I wrote it at the piano I grew up playing in New York.” Despite the success of Gaga’s collaborations with Beyonc

‘American Idol’ Producer Nigel Lythgoe Discusses Show’s Future

‘I’m reading so much baloney,’ Lythgoe says of rumor-filled search for new judges. By James Montgomery Nigel Lythgoe Photo: Stephen Shugerman/Getty Images Earlier this month, it was announced that Nigel Lythgoe would be returning to “American Idol” as an executive producer, ending a two-year absence during which the once-mighty show took a tumble, in terms of both ratings and cultural relevance. His return couldn’t have come during a more tenuous time for “Idol,” which has already seen the departures of iconic judge Simon Cowell , quickly improving Kara DioGuardi and, uh, genuinely nice Ellen DeGeneres . In fact, at the moment, the show has just one judge under contract for next season (that would be Randy Jackson) and has embarked on a lengthy, rumor-filled search to find two new talents to pair him with, with Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and, until recently, Jennifer Lopez the reported frontrunners. Obviously, Lythgoe has his work cut out for him. Rumors abound that he’s contemplating a massive overhaul of the show, though in a new interview with Yahoo Music he kept his plans close to the vest while making it very clear that he believes “Idol” ‘s flagging fortunes can be reversed. “Listen, I wouldn’t be going back if I didn’t think the show could be turned around,” he said. “I do think if we put the focus back in the right place, which is on that young talent, [then] why wouldn’t it be successful?” Lythgoe also downplayed reports that J.Lo’s diva-like demands had taken her out of consideration for the “Idol” judges’ table, and cautioned that no one should believe anything they’ve read about just who will be joining Jackson on the show. It’s still very early in the process, after all. “I’m reading so much baloney in everything. There was something in the press saying Jennifer Lopez is a diva. That woman is in no way a diva, they don’t know what divas are if they think Jennifer Lopez is one. … There is so much rubbish going on,” he said. “My feeling is [the selection process] depends on the content of the panel, and the chemistry within it. I don’t care if they’re Romanian, as long as they fit in with the people around them, and we get a feeling that they know what they’re talking about. “All you want [in an “Idol” judge] is somebody who’s going to be honest with their decisions, not somebody who’s going to say things to be nice,” he continued. “And why would a star, in truth, want to come on that show and say, ‘You were crap tonight?’ because that star is going to be booed. … So it’s going to be really difficult. You just want honest people.” To that end, Lythgoe added that “Idol” might just choose a few lesser-known talents to serve as judges. After all, it worked in the past, and Lythgoe sees no reason why it couldn’t happen again. Such a move just might return the focus of the show back towards the contestants. “Don’t forget, when I started ‘American Idol,’ I brought over Simon Cowell, who no one had heard of, and a young man called Randy Jackson … and Paula Abdul, who a lot of people had said, well, her career is over,” he said. “And that was the start of a team that will be revered every time judges are spoken about. So it isn’t just about what you’ve done in your career, it’s about how you fit in with other people around you. And at the end of the day, it’s about the contestants and their talent, and it’s not about the judges.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Ke$ha Has ‘Learned A Lot’ From Rihanna On Tour

‘Tik Tok’ singer is ‘petrified’ of Last Girl on Earth Tour’s Madison Square Garden stop Thursday night. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Ke$ha Photo: MTV News Rihanna is bringing her Last Girl on Earth Tour to Madison Square Garden on Thursday night (August 12), and that means opening act Ke$ha is feeling particularly nervous. Why? Well, it’s Madison Square Garden! “I’m actually a little petrified, to be honest. It’s a landmark in my career, and it’s just an epic venue. … I’m just really excited, and I’m gonna try to kill it!” she told MTV News. “It definitely means a lot for me to be playing there, especially with Rihanna, ’cause she’s so incredible. It makes me feel like I’m finally arriving here!” The girls kicked off the tour earlier this summer, and the “Tik Tok” singer said she and Rihanna have had some fun times on the road together. “It’s amazing! She’s just a badass,” she said. “I saw her yesterday, and she spanked me — always keeping me on my toes. She’s the sickest.” With all that time together, have the girls discussed working together? “I would love to. I mean, it’s kind of been tossed around,” she said. “There’s not really much time that we’ve spent writing and stuff on this tour, because it’s been so crazy, but it’s definitely an idea I’m not opposed to.” Ke$ha said she’s learning tons from Rihanna on tour. “I don’t know what she would be learning from me, aside from how to look like a maniac, but I definitely learned a lot from her,” she said. “I’ve only been performing pop music for under a year, so I’m relatively new to the arena thing. It’s terrifying, so I really do, every night, watch her, and she’s so graceful and so sweet and so badass.” Her best advice? “She just always has such a good attitude. You just have to own it!” Have you checked out the Last Girl on Earth Tour? What did you think? Share your reviews in the comments!
