Trey Songz Flirts, Cries, Covers Kings of Leon On ‘MTV Unplugged’

It was a chance ‘to be vulnerable,’ the ‘I Invented Sex’ singer tells MTV News. By Jayson Rodriguez Trey Songz performs on “MTV’s Unplugged” Photo: Scott Gries/ MTV NEW YORK — Trey Songz was fun, flirty and fearless during his “MTV Unplugged” performance, which premiered Monday (April 26) on MTV.com. The Grammy-nominated singer recorded the material earlier this month, at Manhattan’s NEP Studio 33, before an intimate audience of (surprise!) mostly women. “Shout-out to the guys with their girls,” a cheeky Trey said, before chuckling as he pointed at a man in the crowd: “He like, ‘Yeah, what up.’ ” The Virginia native showcased a number of the hits from his latest album, Ready, including a mash-up of “I Invented Sex” and Marvin Gaye’s classic “Let’s Get It On.” “You don’t believe me?” he teased a fan during a brief pause after “I Invented Sex.” “I got the blueprint at the crib. “Lemme tell you what I been trying to do, though,” he continued, transitioning into the opening line of the Gaye track. “I been really trying, baby.” Songz, clad in a white T-shirt, dark jeans and a fitted leather jacket, was charismatic throughout his set. At ease onstage, the singer frequently interacted with his eight-piece band, inviting his guitarist and bassist to join him during a performance of Ready ‘s “Black Roses.” And for a cover of Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody,” Songz brought up an overwhelmed admirer from the audience. “A funny thing, I actually forgot a part of the song because I was making sure she was OK,” Trey told MTV News afterward, laughing about the moment. “I said, ‘Are you OK, baby?’ Those are moments that I’ll never forget.” Songz’s onstage guest was all aflutter as he pulled her close, crooning the lyrics directly to her. “I could use somebody,” he sang as he circled her, suggestively. “Someone like you.” Other covers included Jimmy Cliff’s “Many Rivers to Cross” and Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come.” During the latter, and after running through numbers like his own “Say Aah” and “I Need a Girl,” a somber Songz took his jacket off and opened up about his recent good fortune. Taking a seat, he talked about his visit to the White House with Jay-Z and Beyonc

Kate Plus 8 Reloaded: It’s a Go!

Kate Gosselin’s elimination from Dancing with the Stars did not mark the end of her reality TV career. It’s official: TLC is bringing back Kate Plus 8 . It’s a go at the network after the local Department of Labor says the eight children have been cleared to continue their careers as reality TV stars. This despite the objections of her own brother , Jon Gosselin and millions of us across America who are just plain sick of her. Stick it to ’em, Kate! A rep for the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry says the correct paperwork for the show was submitted and approved … and said: “The proper steps have been taken and the kids are permitted for Kate Plus 8 .” Thank goodness. And tough luck, Jon. How’s your career going? KATE PLUS 8 : Gosselin and the gang are running it back! No word if the reloaded Kate Plus 8 will feature Jon in any way, as he was the one who axed the original show for starting to phase him out exploiting the kids. Our guess is for the right price, he won’t object this time around. Especially if he succeeds in pursuing a rich cougar to bleed money and sexual favors from. As for Kate’s other TLC spin-off (yes, there are two proposed Kate Gosselin shows in the works), tentatively titled Twist of Kate, no paperwork has been filed. Without the Department of Labor signing off, you can bet that TLC won’t push its luck. So this may indicate that the children may not be joining her there. Are you excited for Kate Plus 8 2.0 apparently coming back?

Game Defends G-Unit Jabs, Details Epic ‘400 Bars’ Recording

He also addresses supposed Jay Rock dis, in Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Game Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Game said his “400 Bars” 20-minute freestyle was probably his single most epic undertaking ever. “To even think about doing ‘400 Bars,’ you need a lot of patient people in the studio with you,” Game said earlier this week in L.A. “I had my whole team in, my whole crew. We was in the studio, the same studio. We were here for a day, 24 hours. Nobody went home, nobody ate, nobody brushed their teeth — we just grinded it out. It came together. I stayed in the booth for a little bit over eight hours, on my feet. At the end, I felt paralyzed. It just took that much out of me. It felt like I got jumped by 30 people. That’s how much it took to do ‘400 Bars.’ I don’t advise anybody to try to do it or top me. Not that I think they could. It’s a long process. Then, you have to keep people entertained for 20 minutes. You can’t just spit something and it not make sense. Piecing it together was crazy. But I did it, and the response was pretty cool. “The next day, I dropped it on the Internet, and I slept until maybe like 9 p.m.,” he said. “I went to the blogs, everybody was going crazy for it. So I went back to sleep.” You know there’s no way Game could have unleashed “400 Bars” without some sort of controversy. Jay Rock wrote on Twitter that people felt like Game was throwing subliminal jabs at him. “I get on Twitter n everybody hitting me sayn @ihategame getting @ me in his freestyle,” Rock wrote. “Same as Cube, n—as need to have ba–s to say names.” “I’m not scared to go against nobody all n—a have to do is say my name and it’s on with who ever. I don’t feel I need to apologize to no1,” he later wrote. Game didn’t say if he was in fact getting at Jay Rock, but he did say he’s always ready to battle. “I’ll just say it like this: If you feel like it was a jab and respond to it, then play with your career if you want to,” Game warned. “I know what to do with anybody and their career. Unless you really know, you should keep your mouth closed.” We do know for sure that Game spat at the G-Unit once again. “Screaming out f— 50, wouldn’t snitch for half his cash/ … Butter-soft Banks, you a bi—, man/ Me and you, we was cool until 50 unscrewed your kickstand/ And Yayo, turn in your senior-citizen wristband.” The Compton native insists it was no big deal. “You’ve gotta understand the difference between G-Unit [jabs] and a beef,” Game explained. “It was a beef [years ago]. I see 50, nobody is gonna do nothing to him. He sees me, nobody is gonna do nothing to me. It’s over with. The beef is over, but I can still throw a few jabs here and there and poke a little fun. Ain’t nothing wrong with being a comedian of some sorts. That’s all it was. I say maybe eight or 10 bars out of 400. 390 bars about other sh–, and 10 bars worth of jabs ain’t gonna hurt nobody.” Producer the Alchemist was one person who didn’t applaud Game’s efforts. Al took to Twitter to give his “400 Bars” review. “400 bars=snooze. Less is more,” Al wrote. Game responded on his Twitter page by writing, “@AlanTheChemist you already know me ALAN, don’t get ya teeth knocked out !!! then you can Snooze 4 real!” Al continued the back-and-forth with a sarcastic response: “I just got jumped by 75 bloods at the 7-11. thanx alot @ihategame. Twitter is powerful!” “He responded like he was supposed to, because he’s a G-Unit affiliate,” Game told us. “I responded like I was supposed to: the first thing that came to my head. I was serious about mine. He can take it lightly if he wants, but stay outta my way.” Game is finishing up his R.E.D. Room mixtape with DJ Skee. Lil Wayne, Hurricane Chris, Jim Jones and the Birdman all appear on the project. ‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds: Charity Can’t Save Tim Urban

On ‘Idol Gives Back’ week, it was hard to notice anything but Crystal Bowersox. By Jim Cantiello Tim Urban and Ryan Seacrest on “American Idol” on Wednesday Photo: FOX It was “Idol Gives Back” week on “American Idol,” that time on the show when the judges beg viewers to help solve the world’s problems when in actuality, the interest from Simon Cowell’s savings account alone could buy every human a mosquito net. Or 12. It also meant that the top seven were forced to sing “inspirational songs” (with guest mentor Alicia Keys), a theme almost half of them interpreted as “cheesy soundtrack songs.” Crystal “Not a Quitter” Bowersox solidified her front-runner status by delivering the season’s first official “Holy Crap That Just Happened on Live TV” moment when she burst into tears singing lyrics about “the Lord.” But it wasn’t the Holy Spirit that moved her. She told Seacrest it was PapaSox sitting in the audience that made her lose her cool. Bowersox’s “People Get Ready” was so good that nobody even seemed to care that she sang into a bong-shaped microphone stand. Oh, and the other remaining six contestants sang too, I guess. Wednesday was the official two hour (and 9,000,000 minute) “Idol Gives Back” telethon, so you know what that means: The contestants wore virginal white, Annie Lennox sang the crap out of a song that makes you cry (even if Icelandic ash kept her on another continent), and we got to see a past Idol frolic with smiling African babies. (This year we had the added enjoyment of seeing David Cook’s hairstyle change 15 times in four minutes of television!) Producers pulled the biggest names out of their Rolodex for the admirable occasion, and unfortunately most of those celebs passed. But look! They booked Jonah Hill and George Lopez and Common and the one and only Octomom! But “Idol” is first and foremost a music show (just kidding), so the highlights of the night were obviously the musical guests. Each member of the Black Eyed Peas performed a separate song simultaneously (also of note: Fergie dressed like Wonder Woah-man). Mary J. Blige dramatically took off her sunglasses during an “all-star” “Stairway to Heaven.” Alicia Keys left her voice at home, Carrie Underwood sang about changes (not menopause), and Sir Elton John performed “Your Song” for the millionth time in his career. It was most unfortunate when a demon entered the body of Joss Stone and ruined her performance with Jeff Beck. I hope she gets exorcised soon. Perhaps “Idol” will raise money for that cause next year. In the end, despite David Duchovny, Disney stars, the POTUS, the Posh, Bill and Melinda Gates and the “Idol” judges begging America to be generous, viewers voted off Tim Urban, the shiniest happiest person in the cast. To think that $10 of singing lessons may have extended his “Idol” life. Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Guru’s Family Releases Statement About His Death

‘We are proud of all his many legendary musical contributions,’ family says of legendary Gang Starr MC. By Gil Kaufman Guru Photo: Getty Images The family of late Gang Starr founder Guru (born Keith Elam) released a statement on Wednesday morning in reaction to the legendary rapper’s death from cancer-related causes on Monday at the age of 43. “The Elam family wishes to thank the fans of our son/brother/father uncle/nephew/cousin Keith, a.k.a. Guru, for the outpouring of love, concern and support,” the statement reads. “Our hearts are broken by the loss of someone we loved so much. Guru was devoted to his young son, who will most keenly feel his absence.” According to the family, the MC had suffered from the aggressive cancer multiple myeloma for over a year and mounting complications from that illness led him to suffer respiratory failure and cardiac arrest last month. “As a result, Guru was in a coma from mid-February until his death and never regained consciousness,” the statement continues. “Early on the morning of April 19th, he became hypertensive due to low blood pressure. He again went into cardiac arrest and slipped away from us. “Guru died far too young but he was, and we are, proud of all his many legendary musical contributions.” The family said it is not aware of any foundation established by Guru to which fans can send donations, but they are working out a memorial at which admirers can pay their respects. “We know and understand that countless fans want to express their condolences and love and, to that end, we are planning a memorial event in the near future that will be all-inclusive,” the statement read. “Please look for further details from the family as they become available.” Guru’s death has not been without controversy. Some fans questioned the rapper’s “farewell” letter , provided by partner Solar, which contained some harsh comments directed at former Gang Starr DJ Premier. On Tuesday, Solar responded to the criticism, saying, “Guru knew this time would come. The great artist he is, us being intelligent people, we knew there was going to have to be a statement relating to this,” Solar explained of the letter, which also said that the music Guru made with Solar was among the best of his career. “Unfortunately, there are those who have the wicked agenda, and just can’t accept that Guru and I have handled this thing as men and not children, and this is how men of honor handle their business. He arranged his press release. I’m the repository of Guru’s life story. I recorded his life story for book and for movies. We’re not foolish. He was diagnosed with cancer well over a year ago. It’s been operations and so forth. It would be ridiculous for him to not be prepared.” Share your memories of Guru and Gang Starr in the comments below. Delusional Dina Lohan Defends Drunk Daughter

Queen of Denial and Worst Mom Ever candidate Dina Lohan is going on the record about her troubled daughter Lindsay’s reported financial troubles. Shocker – she says it’s all overblown and everything’s fine. Dina denies Lindsay owes $600,000 in credit card debt, though she does concede there were shakeups among those keeping tabs on her accounts. “She is not going into credit card debt. Absolutely not. And her business managers… I actually am in contact with them every day,” Dina proclaims . Everyone feel better about the situation yet? We sure do. This is an old school photo of insane Dina and troubled Lindsay Lohan kickin’ it with her bad ass former boy toy Calum Best. Why? Why not is the real question . “Yes, Lindsay will spend money but she has people that run what she does,” Dina says, meaning her new manager. “We kind of cleaned house. Lindsay doesn’t really pay her bills. Someone else does, so they wouldn’t let her do that.” “And in the interim, you know, a bill may be a little late or not, you know, but that’s pretty normal. That happens to me, that happens to everyone,” she adds. Yeah, being $23,000 behind on rent totally happens to everyone. When it comes to reports of Lindsay’s all-night partying , Dina also says the stories are fabricated and overblown: “People don’t understand how the press manipulates,” she said. “What you read in the press is completely fabricated.” No it’s not . Photos showing the train wreck drunkenly falling into a cactus aren’t “manipulations.” Dina also insists her career is great. Man, she needs a shrink. “She has her 6126 clothing line which is doing amazing,” she says. “We’re in Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales… she designs everything from soup to nuts.” We think what she means is she is nuts.

Jay Leno Weighs In On Conan O’Brien’s TBS Deal

‘I knew he’d land on his feet,’ ‘Tonight Show’ host says of his late-night rival. By Kyle Anderson Jay Leno Photo: Jason LaVeris/ Getty Images When Conan O’Brien announced last week that he would be returning to television this November via cable station TBS, the news reverberated throughout the television community. Was it a step down for O’Brien to move from network TV to basic cable? What would the show look like? What would his deal be? It seems that everybody has an opinion — including former rival and “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno. “I think he’ll be great. He’s a very funny guy. … I knew he’d land on his feet,” Leno told “Access Hollywood” over the weekend. “It’ll be fun. Everybody will compete. Everything after 11 o’clock is now the most exciting place to be.” When asked if he was surprised that O’Brien had landed at TBS and not at Fox, Leno said, “I didn’t know what to think. Fox is network, but they have cable too. It’s all sort of the same now. Network, cable — everybody sort of reaches the same thing. But I think it’s exciting and I think he’ll do well.” Though O’Brien had been negotiating with Fox, the TBS deal apparently came together over the course of a week. O’Brien was careful to make sure he had the endorsement of fellow late-night host George Lopez — whose “Lopez Tonight” currently occupies the 11 o’clock slot that O’Brien will take over in November — so as not to undercut him the way many people feel Leno did when O’Brien briefly took over as the host of “The Tonight Show.” Since returning to the fold as the host of “The Tonight Show,” Leno has reestablished his familiar place at the top of the late-night ratings, besting longtime rival David Letterman. Meanwhile, O’Brien’s Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour continues this Thursday in San Francisco. He’ll remain on the road until June 14. What do you think of Jay Leno’s comments about Conan O’Brien’s new show? Does it matter that O’Brien is on cable instead of on a network? Let us know in the comments! Vanessa Hudgens Is Eager To Return To Stage For ‘Rent’

‘High School Musical’ alum is gearing up to play Mimi in Neil Patrick Harris’ production. By Larry Carroll Vanessa Hudgens Photo: MTV News SANTA MONICA, California — One of them is a former teenage star who fell into punch-line status for nearly a decade before successfully rising from the ashes as a pop-culture icon. The other is a former teenage star currently navigating a move to break through to the next stage in her career. It almost makes sense that Neil Patrick Harris and Vanessa Hudgens would become BFFs, but it raises some eyebrows that they’re joining forces for …”Rent”? “I’m so excited,” Hudgens told MTV News of her participation in Harris’ production of the musical for a run at the Hollywood Bowl in August. “I haven’t done theater in years upon years, and that is my house.” The once squeaky-clean “High School Musical” star is set to play HIV-positive stripper Mimi in “Rent,” which will mark the musical directing debut of NPH. Launched in 1994 and set in New York’s East Village in the ’80s, Jonathan Larson’s rock opera tells the story of young artists struggling to survive the threat of AIDS. Harris starred in L.A.’s “Rent” production in 1997. “He texted me, saying, ‘Do you like “Rent”?'” Hudgens giggled as she revealed how she got the gig. “And I was thinking he was going to ask me to see it with him, so I’m like, ‘Yeah, I love “Rent”!’ ” NPH and Hudgens have really hit it off over the last year, as they worked together in Montreal shooting “Beastly,” an adaptation of the “Beauty and the Beast”-based novel that will hit theaters July 30. And while some might say that this second collaboration is a stretch for the wholesome Hudgens, she insisted that she’s not the only “High School Musical” alum in love with “Rent.” “It’s really fun because me and my girlfriend Ashley Tisdale used to always sing ‘Out Tonight,’ ” Hudgens remembered. “And now I actually get to do it onstage! “Ashley was so excited,” Vanessa said of breaking the news to her “HSM” co-star. “We were so obsessed with all the songs, and we would just sing them in the car over and over again. So she’s really happy for me.” So far, Hudgens said she’s had a “work session” with Harris to prepare for the stage show. “I came in and I sang a few songs for him, and we worked through it; it was so much fun, because within the songs are such loaded stories — it’s a musical, and you get to say whatever you want within those songs.” Hudgens is eager to bring her own interpretation to Mimi. “I’ve been adding different emotions to certain lines that other people haven’t done before; that’s what we’re playing with,” she revealed. “It’s so fun, it’s like a scene within the song.” And as far as those who wonder whether Hudgens will be able to handle herself in “Rent,” the 21-year-old assured us that she’s ready, willing and able. “That’s how I grew up, being onstage,” she said of her youth spent performing in “Carousel,” “The Music Man,” “The King and I” and other local productions of musicals. “Now, I finally get to go back, and I’m so excited.” Related Videos MTV Rough Cut: Vanessa Hudgens And ‘Beastly’ Trailer Premiere

He’s a driven person. He’s also a leader. He does a great job as a mentor to all of us,” Nick says. But ask the young heartthrob about his personal life and… well, don’t expect a detailed response. The magazine inquired about a pair of intimate issues and received the following replies: On he and his siblings’ purity rings : “We like to keep some things private. We appreciate it when people respect that. Everyone has a right to his own business.” On his on-again, off-again relationship with Selena Gomez : “It’s a lot more boring than anyone wants to think.” As for his burgeoning solo career, Nick is humble – and hopeful. “I hope my peers in music and my friends are liking it. I hope they can see my growth in music. It’s a dream of mine to win a Grammy one day… I’m not saying I’m Grammy-worthy, but it would be a dream come true.”
