Duke goes early and so does London in the brand-new trailer for ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation,’ from ‘Never Say Never’ director Jon Chu. By Josh Wigler Dwayne Johnson in “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” Photo: Paramount Crashing through the sky comes the fearful cry of Cobra, but I feel no fear at the laser-blasting terrorist organization’s coming arrival. For one, we all know the Joes have this battle in the bag. For another, there’s a second “G.I. Joe” movie heading our way in just two short months, and by the looks of it, it’s the movie that fans have always wanted. Bring on Zartan, Firefly and the rest of them, I say! Cobra Commander and his minions are out in full force in the brand-new “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” trailer that arrived Tuesday (April 24) courtesy of Machinima . Featuring an introduction from leading man Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, the two-and-a-half minute trailer embraces everything we loved about that first “Retaliation” spot and ups the ante considerably. Keep reading for the five scenes from the trailer we were most excited to see. The Duke Of Hazard “Just don’t kill Duke. That’s really my only request,” MTV.com reader Adam wrote in response to the arrival of the first “Retaliation” trailer some months ago. Unfortunately, Adam, I don’t think your wish will be granted: Rumors have long been swirling about the early exit of Channing Tatum’s “Rise of Cobra” hero, and his limited appearance in the “Retaliation” trailer only fuels that fire further. If there’s a silver lining, it’s that Duke appears to have grown among the Joe crowd quite a bit since last we saw him. He’s got a strong relationship with Roadblock, so much so that he happily volunteers to babysit his fellow Joe’s little girls for a weekend. Duke might not last long in “Retaliation,” but expect his departure — however it comes — to weigh heavily on Roadblock as the film unfolds. The Country Is At War There’s only one man who could destroy G.I. Joe in one crushing move, and The Rock voted for him. Viewers well know that the president of the United States is Zartan in disguise, using his influence to push Cobra into the public eye and assert its dominance over the globe. If you thought the rise of Cobra meant the death of the former president, however, you’d be mistaken: The trailer reveals that the real president (played by “Pirates of the Caribbean” veteran Jonathan Pryce) is still alive, if not exactly well. Two Cases of Thin Mints With few allies left to turn to, Roadblock takes his surviving Joes — Flint and Lady Jaye — and teams up with the reclusive General Joe Colton, the man who started it all. The hero, played by action legend Bruce Willis, has gone from complaining about his high cholesterol to demanding Girl Scout cookies in this newest trailer. And he wonders why his blood pressure is all out of whack! London Bridge Is Falling Down “Rise of Cobra” saw the destruction of the Eiffel Tower. It looks like London’s going to undergo a similar “everything must go” sale when “Retaliation” rolls around. What, you really thought that President Zartan wanted world peace? He and the Cobra gang are behind the massive terrorist assault on the United Kingdom, and it’s going to be up to Roadblock and his pals to prevent further destruction from happening. Ninja Wrap So. Many. Ninjas. But never enough ninjas. There is no such thing, as Snake Eyes and Jinx battling an army of sword-wielding Cobra loyalists on the side of a mountain will surely tell you. Recently, Chu revealed that a nine- to ten-minute, dialogue-free ninja battle would occur in “Retaliation,” and going by the previous trailer and this latest one, it looks like this snow-covered mountain is where it’s all going down. Awesome. What do you think of the new “G.I. Joe” trailer? Sound off in the comments below! Check out everything we’ve got on ” G.I. Strap yourselves in, folks: In the wake of its billion-dollar amusement park-inspired Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Disney is bringing another classic attraction to the big screen — Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride . The Disneyland staple (a ride itself based on a film based on the children’s book The Wind in the Willows ) is heading to theaters under the direction of filmmaker Pete Candeland, who will helm the as-yet unscripted CG/live-action adventure. I don’t know about you, but I take one look at this Mr. Toad ‘s ride poster and just one spot on the release calendar jumps out. How’s about April 20 2013/14, if you get my drift? [ Deadline ]
We’re holding out for some nods to the original in upcoming sneak peek. By Kevin P. Sullivan Colin Farrell in “Total Recall” Photo: Sony Pictures We saw the teaser for the trailer earlier this week, but soon the first full-length preview of the “Total Recall” remake will be upon us. Gone are the Martian setting and Arnold Schwarzenegger, but in their stead, we have a new star, Colin Farrell , and a new leading lady, Kate Beckinsale. Even as goofy as it is, the original “Total Recall” is a modern sci-fi action classic, so expectations are high for this remake, which prefers a look that’s more “Minority Report” than early ’90s science fiction. Here are the five things we want to see in the “Total Recall” trailer: Benny In the world of pre-kill Schwarzenegger puns, few stack up quite like “Screw you!” As the helpful cab driver-turned-traitor, Benny played a big role in the original film, and his death made for one of the biggest laughs. Even if it’s a glimpse at the cab or — if we’re lucky — a Martian drilling rig, we can keep our fingers crossed that Farrell has been brushing up on his pun delivery. Three-Breasted Woman Perhaps the most memorable image from the original 1990 film, the three-breasted woman has to make an appearance at some point in the film. Including at least a hint of the lady with the extra something-something would also signal to doubtful fans that this is a remake that honors the past, as well as moves the story further into the future. Kuato There are two very specific reasons why Kuato is something to look forward to in the remake of “Total Recall.” One is that when Kuato showed his face in the original, the world met one of the most bizarre sci-fi creations of all time. Secondly, Bill Nighy is slated to appear as the conjoined leader of the rebellion. If anyone can tackle a character as out there as that, it’s certainly Nighy, who threw himself entirely into playing a half-man, half-octopus for the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies. Bryan Cranston There’s a reason Walter White from “Breaking Bad” has been making random appearances in movies from “Contagion” to “John Carter.” It’s because Bryan Cranston makes everything better. In the new “Total Recall,” Cranston is playing Vilos Cohaagen, the same evil corporate executive from the original. We’ve all watched Cranston break bad for four years. Now we get to see him go all the way. Some Connection to the Original When remaking a movie that came out a little more than 20 years ago, there’s sure to be a lot of lingering loyalty to the original. Fans will want to see some concrete through-line from the Schwarzenegger “Total Recall.” This will be difficult since the new version uses many of the same characters, but an acknowledgement of the first film will do wonders to earn the confidence of hardcore fans. Georgia Restaurant Makes Joke About Chris Brown Beating Rihanna In Reference To Their Black & Bleu Burger A Georgia restaurant is being accused of poor taste after posting a Facebook message about their Caribbean black and bleu burger that made reference to Chris Brown’s attack on Rihanna : A Watkinsville, Georgia restaurant, Chops & Hops, has come under fire for naming its Caribbean black and bleu sandwich for Rihanna — referencing the abuse she received from ex-boyfriend Chris Brown. “Chris Brown won’t beat you up for eating this unless your name starts with a R and ends with A,” the restaurant wrote on its Facebook page. The post struck a nerve with customers. “This is the most disgusting attempt at humor I’ve seen in a long, long time,” one person wrote. “I’m not sure I would trust someone with so little judgment and decorum with food preparation,” another commenter wrote. The restaurant later backtracked, stating that the staff doesn’t support domestic violence — and that they’ll donate proceeds from the burger’s sales to domestic violence charities. Those are just a sampling of the responses though, many people protested that the comments shouldn’t have been taken so seriously. What do you think? Source Facebook More On Bossip! ‘I think Armie Hammer was always their #1 choice,’ he says of ending up alongside Kristen Stewart in ‘Huntsman’ instead. By Jocelyn Vena Sam Claflin Photo: MTV News “Snow White and the Huntsman” star Sam Claflin apparently had enough charm to be up for the role of the prince in both big-screen adaptations of the classic Snow White fairy tale. In the end, the “Mirror Mirror” producers had their eye on a different young man. “I think Armie Hammer was always their #1 choice,” the “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” star told Teen.com . “But I kind of saw more similarities in their prince and the part I played in ‘Pirates,’ whereas [with this] I thought I wanted to pick up a sword and I wanted to do a bit of fighting and get a bit grittier and hopefully sort of open a few more doors for me.” Claflin isn’t the only one adding some grit to his part: Kristen Stewart’s version of Snow is light-years away from “Mirror” star Lily Collins’. “She tends to sort of not be in any princess-like costumes, which is good for her and kind of gives her that badass sort of fighting spirit, I suppose,” Claflin said of the armor-clad heroine . “But she looks pretty damned awesome. Thumbs up.” “Snow White and the Huntsman,” which also stars Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsman and Charlize Theron as the film’s Evil Queen, opens this summer. A trailer for the darker take on the “Snow” story dropped back in November and gave fans an eyeful of what they should expect from the film, which includes snowy landscapes and even chillier emotions. “Snow White and the Huntsman” follows Stewart’s Snow White and her hunting mentor. After the evil queen, Ravenna, calls for her death, Hemsworth’s Huntsman takes it upon himself to train Snow to fight off the Evil Queen after he disobeys her and allows her to live against the queen’s orders. MTV News thinks ‘Rango’ is the likely winner at this year’s Academy Awards, but who should win? By Josh Wigler “Rango” Photo: Paramount Pictures The Academy Awards are fast approaching, and it’s bound to be an animated show this year — if not a particularly “Adventure”-ous one. For the first time in years, animation powerhouse Pixar has been shut out of the Oscar race for Best Animated Feature Film, leaving the field wide open for an unexpected newcomer to take the top prize. Two foreign flicks — “A Cat in Paris” and “Chico & Rita” — are in the mix, battling it out against popular favorites and proven franchise hits “Kung Fu Panda 2” and “Puss in Boots.” But we expect that the Academy will skew toward the surreal this year, honoring the beautifully bizarre “Rango” with a shiny new golden statue. Read on for our picks and wishes for Best Animated Feature Film. Who Will Win : “Rango” takes it home. “A Cat in Paris” and “Chico & Rita” cancel each other out, as do DreamWorks Animation’s two offerings. That leaves the door open for the little chameleon that could, played to quirky perfection by seasoned veteran Johnny Depp. Reteaming with his former “Pirates of the Caribbean” captain Gore Verbinski, “Rango” stands out as one of the most original animated movies to hit theaters stateside in quite some time. It’s fully deserving of its impending victory. Having said that… Who Should Win : “The Adventures of Tintin.” Clearly, it’s not going to win — it’s not even nominated! A travesty, I say. Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the adventure tales from Belgian cartoonist Georges Remi stands out as one of the greatest comic book films of 2011, and in my opinion, the best animated movie of the year. It deserves not just a nomination, but a win, for its fantastic score from John Williams, wonderfully inventive opening credits, astoundingly assembled action pieces and yet another all-star motion-capture grand slam from the incredible Andy Serkis. “Tintin” didn’t win its Golden Globe award for nothing, folks. This movie should already be polishing its Oscar by now — there are no excuses for its exclusion from the race. The MTV Movies team has the 2012 Oscars covered! Stick with us for everything you need to know leading up to the awards show, and on Sunday, February 25, we’ll put you on the red carpet and bring you all the winners. ‘Ghost Protocol,’ the fourth ‘M:I’ movie, made $134 million in 17 days. By Ryan J. Downey Tom Cruise in “Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol” Photo: Paramount Pictures Tom Cruise’s domination of the holidays continued as “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” remained the #1 movie at the box office, taking in $31.3 million over the New Year’s weekend. The fourth entry in the action franchise has made an estimated $134 million in just 17 days, which is about what “Mission: Impossible III” made during its entire theatrical run. “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” was the runner-up in the box office race, collecting $22.1 million during its second weekend in theaters for $132.1 million total. Robert Downey Jr.’s second outing as the famous detective of classic literature carried an estimated production budget of $90 million. “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked,” the third movie in the series, came in third on the New Year’s box office scorecard. “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked” jumped 45 percent from last weekend with $18.3 million for a $94.6 million total, which is about $45 million behind where the first “Alvin and the Chipmunks” stood at the same point in its run. Steven Spielberg’s “War Horse” was in a close race for the #4 spot with David Fincher’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” “War Horse” took in an estimated $16.4 million (for a $42.9 million total) while “Dragon Tattoo” earned another $16.8 million, which was a 16 percent increase from the weekend before. The first American adaptation of the popular Swedish novel has made a total of $57.1 million. Filmmaker Cameron Crowe’s “We Bought a Zoo” was #5 with $14.3 million for a $41.8 million total. Garry Marshall’s critically reviled ensemble rom-com “New Year’s Eve” doubled its previous weekend, thanks no doubt to the arrival of the holiday for which it’s named. The follow-up to “Valentine’s Day” has made just $46.4 million since its release, however, and 93 percent of film critics panned the flick, according to film review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. Looking back at the 2011 box office, the final “Harry Potter” film was #1 overall with its $381 million gross. “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” was just behind with $352.3 million. Rounding out the top five were “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1” ($275.4 million), “The Hangover Part II” ($254.4 million) and “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” ($241 million). Second clip from band’s self-titled album is ‘very surreal,’ frontwoman Amy Lee tells MTV News. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Evanescence’s Amy Lee on the set of their “My Heart Is Broken” video Photo: Matt Elias/MTV News Earlier this summer, Evanescence took over a very cramped warehouse in Brooklyn to shoot the back-to-basics video for “What You Want,” the first single from their self-titled (and subsequently chart-topping ) comeback album. For several sweaty hours, Amy Lee and company rocked and roared, performing the song in front of a jam-packed crowd of superfans, most of whom had spent the day queuing up outside, in the heat, just to be part of the production. In the end, all that perspiration was worth it: The ” What You Want ” video was definitely one of the most visceral the band has ever made, capturing both the throttling energy of their live sets and the genuine joy Ev (and their fans) were feeling after four years apart. It was a reunion — a super-charged, super-sweaty one. But now, with their return clicking on all cylinders, Evanescence are prepping the video for “My Heart Is Broken,” the second single from their album. And when MTV News caught up with Lee on the set in Los Angeles, she explained that this time, they’re not going for visceral; they’re going for ethereal. And a lot less sweltering too. “We have an air conditioner this time,” she laughed. “This is going to look a lot different. Actually, I kind of wanted it to be the opposite. The first video, for ‘What You Want,’ was very real, and this is very surreal. ” To help get that surreal feel, Lee explained that she drew inspiration from a decidedly below-the-radar source: the 1988 British fantasy/horror film “Paperhouse,” which stuck with her since she first saw it as a teen. “[It’s about] this girl, and everything that she would draw would come to life in her dreams, and she was creating this dream world for herself. And at first, it was cool, but then it’s like this nightmare,” she explained. “So I sort of thought it would apply, and be cool, to have it be this dream that you’re trapped in. So you’re in a place that, at first, is a magical world, but at the same time, you’re isolated and trapped there, and that’s the reason you want to come back to reality after a time. “We’re playing with fiber optics, and so it’s basically like I’m drawing the world around me from nothingness, and when I draw things with my hands, it’s like they actually come to life,” she continued. “So it’s a lot of fun with creating this surreal dream world, and the guys’ performance is sort of like the dream within the dream, in an abyss of darkness; it’s very cool.” Even though the “Broken” clip delves deep into fantasy, the song itself was actually inspired by a very real (and very awful) situation: sex trafficking. Which is why, Lee said, the idea of being trapped in a nightmare applies so well. A friend of the band’s had started , an organization in New York that helps rescue victims of sex trafficking. “We were having conversations with her, and I was writing at the same time,” Lee said. “And a lot of times when I write, I just sort of make up words, and something will stick, and I’ll be like, ‘Oh, that’s from my subconscious. That’s what I need to write the song about.’ And that sort of happened halfway through. I was like, ‘I think I’m writing about this thing, it’s on my heart,’ just imagining being in such a trapped place and how that might feel, so the song was actually inspired by that idea.” What are you expecting from Evanescence’s new video? Producer will be music consultant on the broadcast. By Gil Kaufman Pharrell Williams Photo: Getty Images It’s a long way from “Drop It Like It’s Hot” to the Academy Awards, but Pharrell Williams is about to make that fantastic voyage. The acclaimed hip-hop/pop producer and N*E*R*D band leader has been tapped to be a musical consultant for the upcoming 84th Academy Awards telecast. According to The Hollywood Reporter , first-timer Williams will be in good company when he cooked up musical cues for the show, as Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer has also been asked to work on the show by recently installed show producer Brian Grazer. Zimmer has composed music for more than 100 movies, including “Gladiator,” “Pearl Harbor,” the “Pirates of the Caribbean” trilogy, Christopher Nolan’s “Batman” movies, “Kung Fu Panda 2,” “Rango” and “The Lion King,” for which he won an Oscar. Williams has written songs for a number of movies, including “Knocked Up,” “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” and “Despicable Me.” “Hans is one of the most accomplished and creative film composers of our time, and Pharrell is a phenomenal songwriter with an amazing list of credits,” said Grazer and show co-producer Don Mischer in a statement. “This is an exciting and prestigious collaboration that promises to take the audience on a musical journey.” The two music men join a telecast that has already garnered its share of attention due to the departure of original newbie producer Brett Ratner last month after the “Tower Heist” director was criticized for using a gay slur at a movie screening and speaking in frank terms about his sexual proclivities on Howard Stern’s satellite radio show. Ratner was quickly followed by his hand-picked show host, comedian Eddie Murphy, who was swiftly replaced by Oscar veteran Billy Crystal. The 84th Academy Awards will take place on February 26, 2012.
