Second clip from band’s self-titled album is ‘very surreal,’ frontwoman Amy Lee tells MTV News. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Evanescence’s Amy Lee on the set of their “My Heart Is Broken” video Photo: Matt Elias/MTV News Earlier this summer, Evanescence took over a very cramped warehouse in Brooklyn to shoot the back-to-basics video for “What You Want,” the first single from their self-titled (and subsequently chart-topping ) comeback album. For several sweaty hours, Amy Lee and company rocked and roared, performing the song in front of a jam-packed crowd of superfans, most of whom had spent the day queuing up outside, in the heat, just to be part of the production. In the end, all that perspiration was worth it: The ” What You Want ” video was definitely one of the most visceral the band has ever made, capturing both the throttling energy of their live sets and the genuine joy Ev (and their fans) were feeling after four years apart. It was a reunion — a super-charged, super-sweaty one. But now, with their return clicking on all cylinders, Evanescence are prepping the video for “My Heart Is Broken,” the second single from their album. And when MTV News caught up with Lee on the set in Los Angeles, she explained that this time, they’re not going for visceral; they’re going for ethereal. And a lot less sweltering too. “We have an air conditioner this time,” she laughed. “This is going to look a lot different. Actually, I kind of wanted it to be the opposite. The first video, for ‘What You Want,’ was very real, and this is very surreal. ” To help get that surreal feel, Lee explained that she drew inspiration from a decidedly below-the-radar source: the 1988 British fantasy/horror film “Paperhouse,” which stuck with her since she first saw it as a teen. “[It’s about] this girl, and everything that she would draw would come to life in her dreams, and she was creating this dream world for herself. And at first, it was cool, but then it’s like this nightmare,” she explained. “So I sort of thought it would apply, and be cool, to have it be this dream that you’re trapped in. So you’re in a place that, at first, is a magical world, but at the same time, you’re isolated and trapped there, and that’s the reason you want to come back to reality after a time. “We’re playing with fiber optics, and so it’s basically like I’m drawing the world around me from nothingness, and when I draw things with my hands, it’s like they actually come to life,” she continued. “So it’s a lot of fun with creating this surreal dream world, and the guys’ performance is sort of like the dream within the dream, in an abyss of darkness; it’s very cool.” Even though the “Broken” clip delves deep into fantasy, the song itself was actually inspired by a very real (and very awful) situation: sex trafficking. Which is why, Lee said, the idea of being trapped in a nightmare applies so well. A friend of the band’s had started , an organization in New York that helps rescue victims of sex trafficking. “We were having conversations with her, and I was writing at the same time,” Lee said. “And a lot of times when I write, I just sort of make up words, and something will stick, and I’ll be like, ‘Oh, that’s from my subconscious. That’s what I need to write the song about.’ And that sort of happened halfway through. I was like, ‘I think I’m writing about this thing, it’s on my heart,’ just imagining being in such a trapped place and how that might feel, so the song was actually inspired by that idea.” What are you expecting from Evanescence’s new video? I’m clinically unashamed most of the time, but today I come to you with a confession worthy of St. Augustine or at least Diane Keaton : Twilight may be the ultimate Bad Movie We Love. It is surely bad, as it looks and acts like the longest, moodiest Evanescence video of all time, but it’s also hard to resist. It’s neither pretentious nor overconfident. It’s silly. Bella Swan is hot for a shock-white ghoul with darting pupils and a social disorder. Celebrate.

In a word, to answer the question posed in our headline: No. A week after American Idol champion Scotty McCreery became the first series winner since 2003 to take his debut album to the top of the Billboard 200 chart, runner-up Lauren Alaina fell to Evanescence, whose self-titled third CD sold 127,000 copies in its first week, good enough for first place. Lauren Alaina – Maybe It Was Memphis McCreery’s Clear As Day slipped down into fourth place following a 55 percent drop in sales, but managed to still beat out Alaina’s “Wildflower.” We’ve listed the week’s top 10 below: Evanescence, Evanescence – 127,000 copies Adele, 21 – 111,000 Five Finger Death Punch, American Capitalist – 91,000 Scotty McCreery, Clear As Day – 88,000 Lauren Alaina, Wildflower – 69,000 Tony Bennett, Duets II – 54,000 Ryan Adams, Ashes and Fire – 49,000 Lady Antebellum, Own The Night – 47,000 Lil Wayne, Tha Carter IV – 45,000 Martina McBride, Eleven – 40,000

‘I had a little bit of an identity crisis,’ frontwoman Amy Lee says of band’s hiatus during ‘MTV First: Evanescence.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by James Montgomery Evanescence’s Amy Lee Photo: MTV News After a 20-month hiatus from performing, Evanescence returned to the stage in fine, fighting form Monday (August 8) for the exclusive “MTV First: Evanescence,” treating viewers to the first live performance of their comeback single, “What You Want,” followed by a lengthy no-holds-barred Q&A. The energy in the room and onstage was palpable. The live audience at Blackbird Studios — the recording house where the band laid down the majority of their forthcoming, self-titled album — held on and rocked out to each and every note, particularly frontwoman Amy Lee’s powerful vocals. In discussing their hiatus and eventual return as a band, Lee admitted that the “hard part” of making music and recording was something she felt was missing from her writing process. “The fact that we had to fight for it felt like the first time again,” Lee said of the band’s ups and downs in the years leading up to their latest work. “I had a little bit of an identity crisis,” Lee admitted of being in and associated with Evanescence since she was a teenager and into her adulthood. “[The success with] ‘Fallen’ happened really fast, and it was just go, go, go for a couple years, and we went right into writing and wrote the next record. By the time we finished touring with ‘The Open Door,’ I just needed to go, ‘Who am I as an adult?’ “But [in taking a step back I realized] this is what I do,” Lee said. “It’s not a character; this is really me. Realizing and getting back to it in a real, fuller way. ‘Oh, I’m in this because I love this and [the band] is a true, real part of me,’ not because it’s a character or something. It just makes me really, really happy to be here.” Stay tuned to MTVNews.com as we roll out more from our exclusive interview, including talk about tour details, “Twilight” and much more. Amy Lee tells MTV News the band is preparing to end four-year road hiatus with run of ‘big energy’ shows. By James Montgomery Evanescence’s Amy Lee Photo: MTV News It’s been nearly four years since Evanescence wrapped the tour in support of their The Open Door album … and in the time since, as any fan of the band will tell you, Amy Lee and Co. spent most days doing anything but Evanescence . Of course, all that has recently changed. Their self-titled comeback album is due in stores October 11, and the snarling first single, “What You Want,” is waiting in the wings. Last weekend, they shot a video for the song, and they’re gearing up for a massive world tour . In a way, you could say they’re making up for lost time, which has made the past month a rather hectic ride, indeed. “We haven’t started rehearsing [for the tour] yet, actually. … It’s just been a crazy run-around. We did a big photo shoot in L.A. for a couple days and I’ve been running around doing a lot of press,” Lee told MTV News. “We’re putting the album art together, getting the mixes done at the same time — I’m carrying my speakers around everywhere with me and, like, setting them up in different hotel rooms.” Evanescence have also been focused on finishing the track list for their album — a process made easier by the fact that they’ll also release a deluxe edition that features all 16 recorded tracks — and finalizing the routing for that aforementioned tour. And then it’s full-steam ahead … regardless of whether everyone’s ready or not. “I wish I had more time to prepare,” Lee said of the tour set to kick off in October. “No, we’re excited to get back out there. All we can do is just run as fast as we can. Everything’s just crammed really tight, from the video to the promo to the rehearsal,” she added. “I’m ready to get to rehearsal, because I’m starting to feel like, ‘OK, we’ve got dates booked, we haven’t practiced yet.’ Starting to get a little nervous, but in a good way. … [We’ll] be back in front of the fans, and feeling that energy again. That’s going to be good for my brain.” And when Evanescence do return to the road, what can fans expect? Well, a solid dose of the new album, of course, but also plenty of the old hits too. Of course, Lee can sum it all up pretty nicely. “It’s just going to be straight-up rock. Big energy, this album is just a fast-paced rock ride. Is that dumb to say? Fine, make fun of me,” she laughed. “We’ve got three albums now to pull from so, of course, we want to play the new ones but, of course, we’re going to play the old ones too. It’s going to be a lot. ” Are you looking forward to a new album from Evanescence? Tell us in the comments! Band will tour U.S. and Europe in October, singer tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Evanescence’s Amy Lee Photo: Jason Squires/ WireImage Evanescence ‘s self-titled album isn’t due in stores until October 11, but that hasn’t stopped the band from giving fans a preview of what they can expect to hear on the disc — or, you know, three previews: first single “What You Want,” the booming “The Other Side” and the epic, ethereal “Lost in Paradise” — or from lining up a handful of early tour dates in support of the album. So far, Amy Lee and Co. have committed to a one-off show in Nashville, Tennessee, on August 17, a pair of big-ticket gigs in Brazil and Puerto Rico in October and a run of concerts in the U.K. in November. That leaves a rather sizeable hole right around the time of the album’s release — one the band plan to fill very quickly, Lee told MTV News. “We’ll be touring the U.S. and Europe in October. It’s not all [confirmed], but it’s going to happen,” she said. “We’re doing Rock in Rio on the 2nd, and then I think Puerto Rico, and that’s going to be awesome, because we’ve never played [there]. … That’s the beginning of the tour; the tour will start there, we’ll come back to the States, do a few weeks in the bigger cities, and then go do the same thing in Europe, and then the next thing will happen.” So just when will the full slate of Evanescence tour dates be revealed? Soon. A spokesperson for the band’s label, Wind-Up Records, told MTV News the band will begin announcing dates in two weeks, something Lee seemed to confirm Thursday when she took to Twitter to let her fans know the wait is almost over. “Guys, the tour dates that have been announced are only the beginning!” she wrote. “Don’t be sad if you don’t see a date in your town yet! We’re coming!” Are you excited to see Evanescence on tour? Tell us below! Related Videos Evanescence: First Listen Related Artists Evanescence

Evanescence’s Amy Lee Reveals Tour Plans
MTV News gives fans a preview of the band’s comeback single. By James Montgomery Evanescence’s Amy Lee Photo: MTV News It’s been nearly four years since Evanescence have released a single , and during that time, it appeared very likely they’d never release another. But on Monday (July 11), the wait — and all the drama that surrounded it — finally came to an end, because Evanescence are officially back, with a roaring new single called “What You Want.” Last week, MTV News traveled to Nashville’s Blackbird Studio, where the band were putting the finishing touches on their upcoming, self-titled album (which their label, Wind-Up Records, just informed us is now due October 11 — one week later than previously reported), and they gave us an exclusive first listen at a handful of tracks, including “Want.” And now, we’re going to give you a sneak peek. Frontwoman Amy Lee had previously described the song as being “really different” from anything in the band’s back catalog, and, as you can tell, she wasn’t kidding. “What You Want” is most definitely a departure, quite possibly the heaviest song Evanescence have ever made. The guitars buzz like a hornet’s nest, the drums are pounding and primal, and the strings (arranged by Beck’s dad, David Campbell) swell and stab. Throw in a positively massive chorus and Lee’s vocal pyrotechnics, and you’ve got a song that’s powerful enough to shake rock radio to its very foundation. And that’s pretty amazing, considering its simple roots. “[Bassist] Tim [McCord] and [guitarist] Terry [Balsamo] and I wrote that song at my house in New York. We were just jamming, like, recording demos, and obviously the song has grown a lot since then, with everyone else,” Lee told us. “For me, it was — and I need to remember this, so I can apply it in the future — it wasn’t trying so hard to be some epic, massive chorus. I was just doodling around on the piano and the guys were like, ‘Do that. Whatever you just did, that’s an awesome melody.’ And I was like, ‘Really?’ Sometimes you just need your friends to be like, ‘Do that!’ ” Though it came from humble origins, “What You Want” deals with heady concepts, a trait that’s readily apparent throughout Evanescence’s new album. “It’s about freedom — that’s definitely a constant theme on the record — but, it’s like Evanescence, and me, and my relationship with the music and the fans, and coming to that [realization] of ‘This is what I’m supposed to do … I want to do this,’ ” Lee said. “And when it says, ‘Remember who you really are,’ that’s exactly everything you could assume it means.” For the time being, Evanescence fans are just going to have to make do with a snippet of “What You Want” (the full single is set to premiere in early August, Wind-Up said). But rest assured, you’re going to be hearing the song a lot in the near future, because, as Lee said, it’s not just the band’s comeback single, it’s also the beginning of a mission — one Evanescence are taking very seriously. “I feel like, not that I’m trying to do what’s important for the music industry, I’m doing what I want — we’re doing what we love. But, at the same time, it’s so refreshing for us to play music that we want to hear,” she explained. “It rocks, and not that there’s nothing going on that does, but less and less; that’s definitely not what’s dominating the airwaves. And it would be so amazing and it’s totally our dream to have that happen for us; not even just for us, but, like, we want to hear rock music again. “I think that, as a band, we’re really strong,” she continued. “Everybody’s just playing at the top of their game right now, they’re just putting it all in … and it was, like, that mentality the whole time we were working. Like, whatever it takes to make the most amazing thing possible.” What do you think of the “What You Want” sneak peek? Share your reviews in the comments! Related Videos Evanescence: First Listen
