Can Pia Toscano Or Thia Megia Win ‘American Idol’?

Experts weigh in on the top 12 women and their chances of making it through to the finals. By Gil Kaufman Pia Toscano Photo: Michael Becker / FOX Thursday night is when some “American Idol” dreams will come true, and a dozen or more will be crushed and sprinkled all across the seizure-inducing new IdolDome stage. But before all that carnage and celebration, we once again turned to some of our “Idol” experts to make some predictions about this season’s front-runners after the top 12 women did their thing on Wednesday night. Because he just can’t get enough of all things “Idol,” we turned to MTV News’ resident expert Jim Cantiello for his take on which ladies soared and which ones crashed and burned. Despite a few serious stinkers, JC said he continues to be shocked by the caliber of vocalists on the show this season. “You believe that these were the finest singers they found while on the road,” he said, noting two “atom-bomb-sized surprises” on Wednesday night. His first revelation was former housekeeper Lauren Turner, whose choice of Etta James’ “Seven Day Fool” he deemed perfect and full of attitude. “[She] stood out from the pack with her gravelly blues voice and in-your-face performance style,” he said. The other big surprise was show-closer Pia Toscano , the raven-haired beauty who sang the Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand by You,” which he said, “dug deep and showed off her pitch-perfect pipes. Her range was sick, she had confidence, she effortlessly hit some major power notes. America stood up and noticed, as did the judges, who gave her the first official standing ovation of season 10.” If he had to pick a stand-out front-runner, though, at this point, Cantiello is still going with 16-year-old sassafras Lauren Alaina. “[It’s her] race to lose,” he said. “She’s everything ‘Idol’ is looking for. [She] got up onstage and looked like she could have commanded a live audience 10 times bigger without flinching. She has stage presence, a powerful voice, and she has a unique ability to live somewhere in between R&B, pop and country.” And while he thought the Carrie Underwood/Kelly Clarkson comparisons from Randy Jackson were not off the mark, Cantiello wondered if Alaina’s need to always be the center of attention might start grating on voters’ nerves? As for the other 16-year-old, Jim said Thia Megia has great pitch and a large fanbase, but he just can’t “picture her at the Nokia, covered in confetti. Unless she steps up her personality.” A great measure of how polarizing “Idol” contestants can be is the list of hot prospects submitted by Top Idol blog founder Melinda Green. One of her favorite performances was from this year’s obligatory oddball, Rachel Zevita. Though the judges thought Zevita blew it with her jazzy, off key take on Fiona Apple’s “Criminal,” Green loved it. “I really hope we see more of her. Alas, I think the judges would prefer sending through Ashthon Jones,” Green said of the Nashville native with the giant, blow-out hairdo whose sultry cover of Monica’s “Love All Over Me” earned raves. Green wasn’t sipping the “Idol” juice, though. “Every performance I’ve seen of this girl has been the same tired R&B diva wannabe shtick we’re treated to every season,” she said. She also liked Naima Adedapo, but is looking for more personality from the Erykah Badu-like singer and clothing designer. Lamenting how many of Wednesday night’s singers opted for tunes we’ve heard a dozen times in past seasons, Green said Karen Rodriguez made it interesting by singing half of Mariah Carey’s “Hero” in Spanish, but wondered if it was a bit too obvious pandering to judge Jennifer Lopez. Green agreed with Cantiello that Alaina might start to strike some viewers as a “precocious coquette as taught by her stage mother” and said despite her “perfect tone,” Thia Megia may not have the emotional maturity to connect with the songs she’s singing. “With this year’s emphasis on youth and the show’s clear aim of getting a viable female winner, we’ll be forced to see more of both Thia and Lauren Alaina,” she lamented. Bottom line, Green agreed that Toscano can go far and just needs to show more personality and that Turner has the goods that could take her deep into the competition. “She’s got the kind of voice I love,” she said, agreeing with Randy Jackson’s description of Turner as a mix of Amy Winehouse and Florence Welch. “If ‘American Idol’ wants current, they best do everything they can to keep Lauren Turner around. She’s the real deal, no theatrics, just raw talent.” Do you agree with our experts? Who do you think is headed for elimination tonight? Let us know in the comments below! Pia Toscano Brings ‘American Idol’ Audience To Its Feet

Judges praise 21-year-old’s powerhouse Performance of the Pretenders’ ‘I’ll Stand By You.’ By Adam Graham Pia Toscano Photo: Michael Becker / FOX On a night when Thia Megia gave a quiet, confident performance well beyond her 15 years and teen Lauren Alaina was compared to both Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, it was nevertheless Pia Toscano who stole the show on Wednesday’s (March 2) “American Idol.” Toscano, who anchored the episode with the final performance of the evening, took on the Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand By You” and knocked it out of the park, building to a series of powerful glory notes in the closing moments that brought the entire studio audience — her fellow contestants and the judges included — to its feet. The soaring anthem, from the Pretenders’ 1994 album Last of the Independents, has a bit of “Idol” history of its own: Gina Glocksen sang it as a contestant back in season six, but more memorably, Carrie Underwood sang it during the “Idol Gives Back” special that same year. The song became a top 10 single for Underwood, peaking at #6 on Billboard ‘s Hot 100; it remains her second-highest charting Hot 100 single to date. (Underwood took it higher than even the Pretenders did; their version topped out at #16.) Toscano, the 21-year-old New Yorker who tried out for “Idol” during the New Jersey auditions, was resplendent on Wednesday in a sleek, black mini-dress. Following her performance, which was as assured as it was controlled, she held her hands in front of her mouth as Randy Jackson reminded her of the standing O she had just received and then told her that her performance immediately ranked among the best performances in the show’s history. “That was unbelievable,” the Dawg told her. “That’s how you do it!” Steven Tyler, after invoking one of his more nonsensical Tyler-isms (“You know, after Monday and Tuesday, even a week says WTF” — WTF??), agreed with Jackson’s assertion that she was “unbelievable,” adding as well that it was “gorgeous.” Jennifer Lopez kicked it up a notch, calling the performance “out of this world.” “You were saving that for when it counts!” she teased her. Heading into the show, Toscano wasn’t necessarily a name on the tip of the tongues of many viewers, but it definitely was afterward. And on a night when she needed to bring it, she brought it, and in doing so brought the house down with her. What did you think of Pia Toscano’s performance? Let us know in the comments! Carrie Underwood Sexy In Denim

It’s kind of weird, but I don’t really have Carrie Underwood on the site very often. I don’t know why, it’s not like she’s unattractive or she can’t sing the national anthem, she’s actually really quite hot and we know she can sing because she won a nationally televised karaoke contest a few years back. It probably has something to do with the fact that she’s boring as hell. Here she is on her way to lunch in her denims and sexy boots. We get it you’re a country singer. Where’s the cowboy hat?

The Thank Me Later rapper co-starred as Nicki’s love interest in her “Moment 4 Life” video , adding more intrigue to their flirtatious union. But when the Pink Friday star explained how she managed to reel Drizzy in for the clip, she proved to be a pretty demanding lady. “It wasn’t hard to get Drake. Drake does what I tell him to do,” Nicki laughed to MTV News’ Sway during an exclusive interview after the “Moment 4 Life” premiere. “I’m Nicki Minaj! You know Drake does what I tell him to do.” The two have carried on a playful romance over Twitter , in interviews and in song for some time now. But the two Lil Wayne prot

‘American Idol’ Takes Nashville, Finds Potential Winner In Lauren Alaina

Teen wows the judges with her strong voice. By Gil Kaufman Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson on “American Idol” Photo: FOX No pressure, Nashville, but the biggest “American Idol” winner in the show’s history, Carrie Underwood, just happens to live in Music City. That was the not-so-subtle message “Idol” producers opened the show with on Thursday night (January 27) when our new favorite judging trio sat behind their desk in the legendary Ryman Auditorium to see what they could find in the home of country music. By the time they got up, they felt like they might have found a winner in a 15-year-old country girl with a voice as big as all outdoors. But things did not get off to a very good start thanks to helium-voiced chicken squawker Christine McCaffrey, a not-quite-there dental assistant from West Palm Beach, Florida, who butchered one of J.Lo’s favorite songs, Lee Ann Womack’s “I Hope You Dance.” All Randy Jackson could keep saying was, “Really? Really?” In past seasons, we’ve had twins, best friends, brothers and sisters, but Thursday night’s show brought us our first auditioning exes. Aspiring singers and former couple Rob Bolin and Chelsee Oaks made beautiful music together, singing a flawless duet on the Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody.” “You were one voice,” a pleasantly surprised Steven Tyler told them. “Sometimes passion comes from friction, and I saw how much in love you were.” Restaurant worker Bolin, 23, showed off his deliciously raspy Ray LaMontagne-style chops on Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On,” while waitress Oaks, 23, was equally impressive with a rich run through Brandi Carlile’s “The Story.” Both made it through, so Hollywood Week should be interesting. Amid the great ones, there were philosophical, Lynyrd Skynyrd-lovin’, thick-as-a-brick tattoo artists, a screechy Chaka Khan killer, a kid in a blue bodysuit and a soulful former Miss Teen USA named Stormi (yes, with an “I”) who got through over Lopez’s objections about her “small” voice. And then there was 27-year-old Wickliffe, Kentucky, student Adrienne Beasley. Her inspiring story was solid — she was adopted by a white family at age 2 and raised on a farm — but her singing was even better, mixing a hint of R&B grit and country twang on Lady Antebellum’s “American Honey.” “I hear something so special in your voice, and I can’t put my finger on it right now,” said Tyler, who was close to tears after the performance. The real showstopper, though, was self-proclaimed recording artist and already-a-star Latoya “Younique” Moore, a 26-year-old who made up in sass what she lacked in vocal skills. Her tone-deaf slaughter of Tamia’s “When I Close My Eyes” was a disaster, and Tyler was kind when he joked it was “definitely unique.” Randy was more blunt, calling it annoying and making a high-pitched buzzing-bee sound while breaking the bad news. But Moore wasn’t done, as she sang her way out the door, hoping for one last chance, thinking perhaps it was just her tempo that was off and not everything else. A succession of fellas knocked it out later in the day, showing off some ear-licious deep-fried soul and grit that got the judges excited. Matt Dillard’s story was very inspirational, coming from a family that had housed more than 700 special-needs foster children over the past two decades. The brawny, cowboy-hat-wearing 27-year-old unemployed Tennessee good ol’ boy surprised the panel with his low-key cover of Josh Groban’s popera hit “You Raise Me Up.” Lopez wasn’t swayed, but Tyler agreed with Jackson that it was worth taking a chance on Dillard. Talk about saving the best for last! The judges were sure they found a potential winner in Rossville, Georgia, spunky 15-year-old Lauren Alaina, who cited her cancer-survivor cousin as the inspiration for her singing. And when she opened her mouth and poured out Faith Hill’s “Like We Never Loved at All,” the air went out of the room as her smoky voice wrapped around the ballad and hit all the high, low and in-between notes like a seasoned pro. “Best we’ve seen today … I’m blown away,” Randy said. “I think you should cry,” Tyler added as Alaina began to mist up. “Because you’re going to make 40 million people cry tears of joy, baby.” She put some icing on the cake after she brought in her family and instructed Tyler to duet with her on his “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,” her parents’ favorite song. It’s on to Austin, Texas, next week and two more nights of auditions. Who was your favorite Nashville auditioner? Let us know in the comments! See How Many Armless-Surfing Shots You Can Spot in the Soul Surfer Teaser

Apparently Soul Surfer tells the inspiring story of Bethany Hamilton, “who lost her arm in a shark attack and courageously overcame all odds to become a champion again, through her sheer determination and unwavering faith.” That’s a hell of a true story. Good luck figuring it out from this first teaser trailer though! This preview looks more like the inspiring story of attractive kids hanging out at the beach and surfing and then hanging out with Helen Hunt and Dennis Quaid. So just how did this genius marketing team manage to cut a trailer for a film where the protagonist is missing an arm without actually ever showing the one-armed girl? Well, upon closer inspection, they didn’t quite manage it, but points for effort! I’ve provided screen shots after the jump in case you blinked.

Dr. Conrad Murray Preliminary Hearing Set For Next Week; Prosecutors to Outline Case

Dr. Conrad Murray’s preliminary hearing begins Tuesday. He faces a felony charge of involuntary manslaughter in the 2009 death of Michael Jackson. When it does, don’t expect him to raise many objections to the prosecution’s case against him. Instead, he’ll just sit back and see what they’ve got. As the prosecution lays out its case, Murray’s lawyer Ed Chernoff will be looking for holes and inconsistencies, but won’t present his side. Why? OBSERVE AND REPORT : Murray will do little else . The judge will surely order Murray to stand trial. Judges rarely dismiss cases after a preliminary hearing, so there’s no point in defending him now. Proving Murray’s guilt is a serious, more complicated task, but proving he should merely stand trial in the eyes of a judge? It’s all but a done deal . Murray reportedly plans to argue that Michael Jackson killed himself with the lethal dose of Propofol, but you won’t hear that next week at all. Instead, he’ll watch the state play its hand and plan his strategy for the manslaughter trial that will almost certainly follow later in the year. The prosecution will call around 30 witnesses, including experts and LAPD members, to establish Murray acted recklessly in drugging MJ. Another potential Murray defense angle when the time comes? That so many others over-medicated MJ , it’s impossible to single him out.
