Lil Wayne’s Rebirth Is No Match For Lady Antebellum

Weezy’s latest debuts at #2, Nick Jonas & the Administration enter at #3 on Billboard 200. By Gil Kaufman Lil Wayne’s Rebirth Photo: Universal Motown What a difference two years make. While Lil Wayne smashed records when his last album, 2008’s Tha Carter III, sold more than 1 million copies and debuted at #1, the frequently delayed, oft-leaked follow-up, Rebirth, came nowhere near that figure. The rock-flavored disc — which was accidentally shipped to 500 Amazon.com customers in December and then widely leaked online — will debut at #2 on the Billboard 200 album charts this week on sales of 176,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. The debut comes one day after Wayne got a three-week delay in his sentencing for federal gun charges due to a dental emergency. That figure was not enough to unseat last week’s #1, country darlings Lady Antebellum ‘s Need You Now, which will retain the pole position despite losing nearly 60 percent of its first-week business (209,000). Coming in just behind Wayne is the debut from Nick Jonas & the Administration , Who I Am, which sold 82,000 copies. The only other debut in the top 10 is from horror rocker Rob Zombie , whose Hellbilly Deluxe 2 lands at #8 (49,000). The rest of the top 10 features albums that got a nice post-Grammy awards bump, including Lady Gaga ‘s Fame (#4, 79,000, up 17 percent), the 2010 Grammy Nominees compilation (#5, 71,000, up 55 percent), the Black Eyed Peas ‘ The E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies) (#6, 70,000, up 76 percent), Taylor Swift ‘s Album-of-the-Year-winning Fearless (#7, 53,000, up 58 percent) and Best New Artist winners Zac Brown Band ‘s Foundation (#10, 40,000, up 82 percent). Coming in at #9 is Susan Boyle ‘s I Dreamed a Dream, which has sold nearly 3.5 million copies in just under three months. Other big Grammy winners getting a boost include the night’s biggest trophy wrangler, Beyonc

Ellen DeGeneres Makes ‘American Idol’ Debut Tonight

What should ‘Idol’ fans expect from the talk-show host’s judging debut? By Gil Kaufman Ellen DeGeneres Photo: FOX On Tuesday night (February 9), we find out what kind of chemistry — if any — talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres has with the rest of the “American Idol” judging panel as the comedian makes her debut as the fourth judge during the start of Hollywood Week. In the early going, DeGeneres reportedly clashed at times with lead judge Simon Cowell, who is departing at the end of the current season, a move that has set off rampant speculation about who might fill his opinionated shoes next season. DeGeneres has some pretty big sneakers to fill herself, as she steps in following the departure of beloved loopy ex-judge Paula Abdul, who quit the show last year after failing to reach a new contract settlement. The ninth season of “Idol” will be the first without Abdul’s lovably loony and predictably supportive commentary. Fox is hoping the cuddly and quick-witted DeGeneres can make fans forget about Abdul’s exit and boost slowly eroding ratings on what is still the #1 show in prime time. “Ellen brings a huge fanbase and people will be curious to see how she does. But if she performs poorly, that is bad for the show’s long-term health,” Entertainment Weekly senior writer Michael Slezak told Reuters. MTV’s resident “Idol” expert Jim Cantiello couldn’t agree more. “I am super excited to see it for several reasons,” he said. “One, it’s a new element to a show that’s been on the air for nine seasons, and we heard rumors there might have been tension on the first day because Simon showed up late, so it’s fun to watch that episode with that filter. Also, she’s one of the most famous people out there, so anything she does warrants attention.” Like a lot of “Idol” followers, Cantiello said he was a bit nervous about the addition of DeGeneres to the expert panel following her poorly received guest stint on “So You Think You Can Dance” last summer, where detractors faulted her for making jokes, but not really commenting on the dancing. “That was really bad, and if she does that on ‘Idol,’ the show will die a horrible death this year,” Cantiello said. “When the news first came out about her, people freaked out, but that’s subsided, and once I saw the promos Fox cut, they did a really good job teasing it.” In particular, Cantiello pointed to the most recent teaser, which appeared to show the amiable DeGeneres putting her foot down and giving some tough love to a Hollywood contestant. “I’m really excited and I was anti-Ellen at first,” he said. “So if I’m excited, I think other people should be too.” “Idol” has ruled the ratings for the past six years, easily besting every other show in prime time during its winter run, while churning out superstars like Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and solid pop singers like Fantasia and Jordin Sparks. Part of the reason was the fire-and-ice repartee between Cowell and Abdul, which typically consisted of harsh words from the Brit and soothing platitudes from the former pop star/ choreographer. With the addition of professional songwriter Kara DioGuardi last year, who sits alongside longtime producer/musician Randy Jackson and music-industry veteran Cowell, the panel has plenty of cred. And though DeGeneres doesn’t have experience in the industry, former finalist Kimberly Caldwell thinks she could add that “it” factor Abdul brought to the show. “I’m a massive Ellen fan,” said Caldwell, who finished in seventh place in season two. “One of my dreams is to just be on ‘The Ellen Show.’ … I think that she’s gonna be really great, especially with Paula gone. There’s not gonna be … a little sensitive side. I think she’s gonna give constructive criticism, which we don’t see from other people.” Caldwell defended the show’s resident crank, explaining that her experience in the music industry has taught her that Cowell is just keeping it real. “If you think he’s mean, then you haven’t been in the music industry, because he really is like a little cupcake compared to people I’ve dealt with, what most people deal with,” she said. With Cowell bowing out after the finale in May to focus on his other talent show, “The X Factor,” the pressure is on for DeGeneres to pull her weight on the panel and perhaps emerge as the new go-to voice the audience loves to hate — or, as might be the case for her, loves to love. “If Ellen works, it puts [producers] in a much better position when they replace Simon. The dynamic is the thing I am curious to watch. I think some people will miss Paula’s ‘camp mom’ spirit,” Brian Mansfield, who runs the USA Today Idol Chatter Blog, told Reuters. And, if all else fails, there’s always the possibility that shock jock Howard Stern could step into the Cowell seat next year and really shake things up. Super Bowl Is The Most-Watched TV Show Ever

Sunday’s game draws more than 106 million fans to tackle the ‘M*A*S*H’ finale’s record. By Larry Carroll Carrie Underwood sings at Super Bowl XLIV Photo: CBS For three decades, the final episode of “M*A*S*H” has stood as the unreachable height of television broadcasting, combining the end of a cultural phenomenon with the end of a three-network era to garner 106 million viewers. Now, the seemingly impossible has occurred, as Sunday’s Super Bowl has beaten the drama to become the most-watched program in television history. On Monday (February 8), the Nielson Company released ratings numbers from the weekend’s big game between the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts. The result? The Super Bowl garnered 106.5 million pairs of eyeballs, just enough to beat the final “M*A*S*H” episode’s 105.97 million viewers. As theories about the massive ratings emerged, credit went to a compelling story line that had New Orleans hoping for triumph following Hurricane Katrina, Peyton Manning’s desire for a second Super Bowl ring and a game that was close for much of its run despite a 31-17 Saints final score. The previous record viewership for a Super Bowl was last year’s game between Arizona and Pittsburgh, which netted 98.7 million viewers. On the flip side, some are pointing out that there were far fewer TV sets in 1983 when “M*A*S*H” went off the air. Finishing its immensely popular 11-season run, the series about a team of doctors and support staff stationed at the 4,077th Hospital in South Korea signed off February 28, 1983, with “Goodbye, Farewell and Amen,” which ended with Hawkeye Pierce famously riding off in a helicopter and reading the word “goodbye” spelled out in stones on the ground. Incidentally, the record for highest percentage of television sets to watch a TV series is still held by “The Fugitive,” whose final episode had an astounding 72 percent of all American homes tuned to its final episode in 1967. With the average home now containing multiple TVs, and the splintering of entertainment into so many options, that record seems unlikely to ever be broken. Carrie Underwood’s National Anthem Kicks Off Super Bowl XLIV

Queen Latifah performed ‘America the Beautiful’ before Underwood’s rendition of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner.’ By Kyle Anderson Carrie Underwood performs the National Anthem Photo: CBS Carrie Underwood excels no matter what the context. Fresh off her headline-grabbing contribution to the Michael Jackson tribute at this year’s Grammy Awards (where she adroitly weaved her way through Jackson’s “Earth Song”), Underwood took the microphone in front of a sold-out Sun Life Stadium in Miami to deliver a killer rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” before the kickoff to Super Bowl XLIV. Before Underwood performed, Queen Latifah sang “America the Beautiful” flanked by a children’s choir. Latifah broke it down during the tune’s finale for a jazz-inflected, gospel-tinged capper. Then it was time for Underwood. Following the presentation of the colors, the “American Idol” alum took the stage wearing a white jumpsuit accented with silver chains and a silver belt. During her performance, the broadcast cut to scenes of soldiers in Kabul, Afghanistan, standing at attention. At the song’s climax, the crowd was treated to fireworks and — in a Super Bowl tradition — a flyover by a quartet of fighter jets. Players, coaches and fans were visibly moved by Underwood’s stellar performance. The singer is the latest in a long line of blockbuster stars who’ve started the Super Bowl with the national anthem. At last year’s game, fellow “American Idol” contestant Jennifer Hudson performed the song before the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals. Other recent notable “Star-Spangled Banner” crooners include Jordin Sparks (another “Idol” alum), Billy Joel, Alicia Keys, Beyonc
