LEED or Not, Parking Garages Are Not Green

In Leiden, the Netherlands, Paul de Ruiter Architects are building a parking structure. It is made of “recyclable” materials so that it can be taken down in ten or twenty years when the land is redeveloped. The architect writes at Designboom: “given that our current way of life is largely dependent on mobility (by car), it is important that the issue is resolved in a way that is as sustainable as possible.” Wrong. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds: Lee Wins The ‘Season Of The Girl’

Joe Cocker, Paula Abdul and other random guests can’t distract from a lackluster season nine. By Jim Cantiello “American Idol” wrapped up “The Season of the Girl” by handing the “Idol” crown to a boy. Season nine really was as inept as we all thought. Sorry Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox , but Wednesday night’s two-hour finale was really all about Simon Cowell . With the exception of David Cook and Adam Lambert , most of the past “Idol” favorites showed up — even ones Simon supposedly hates — to say goodbye to the guy who helped make them moderately successful. (Some crackpot audition rejects also performed with Dane Cook. It was supposed to make Simon squirm, and he did … along with the rest of America.) Then Paula Abdul returned to the “Idol” stage in a bizarre appearance that can only be described as part roast, part intervention. “Idol” producers booked lots of special guest stars from the ’70s and ’80s to duet with the top 12: Alice Cooper, Chicago, Joe Cocker, Darryl Hall and John Oates, the Bee Gees. It was one Charo away from being an episode of “The Love Boat.” Producers also double-dipped into the ’90s Relics bin by inviting Alanis Morissette to duet with Crystal on a G-rated “You Oughta Know” and Christina Aguilera to perform with the top six girls for six seconds before booting them from the stage so should could sing her new 18-minute-long ballad. The only contemporary artists were previous Idols. A very fierce Carrie Underwood served up “Undo It” and Kris Allen rocked his new single, “Yo, Seacrest, Your Microphone Is on During My Performance and That’s Annoying.” Kris was also on hand to give Lee and Crystal their new custom-designed Ford Fiestas. Interesting side note: The Ford Fiesta is a fraction of the cost of the cars Kris and Adam won last year. Even the sponsors realized this season sucked. The night’s biggest surprise was Casey James and Bret Michaels’ duet. I’m still not sure what was more shocking: the fact that Bret Michaels was onstage even though he’s still recovering from a life-threatening brain hemorrhage, or the fact that Casey James was one of the best performers of the night. After Janet Jackson showed off a short, slicked-back ‘do and General Larry Plant and William Hung showed off a lack of shame, Seacrest announced the winner the way Maury reveals paternity tests. Lee DeWyze, you ARE the father. Do you agree with the results? Do you think a girl can ever win “Idol” again? What was your favorite moment of the two-hour finale? The-Dream Says Just-Leaked ‘Sex Intelligent’ Is ‘Smash Time’

Song is set to feature T.I., but his vocals weren’t on the leaked track. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Shaheem Reid The-Dream Photo: MTV News A mind is a terrible thing to waste, especially if those smarts are only used in the boardroom and not the bedroom, according to The-Dream. An uncompleted version of the Atlanta songwriter’s “Sex Intelligent” arrived on various websites over the weekend. The song is scheduled to feature T.I., but his vocals weren’t attached to the leaked track. In March, The-Dream talked with MTV News about “Sex Intelligent” and said the song is about men and women being in tune with each other’s desires. ” ‘Sex Intelligent’ is just about knowing what you’re doing when you’re in the bedroom,” he said. “Not only in the bedroom, but mentally knowing what somebody likes. And that’s another one of those harmony-driven ’90s type of records, but, of course, updated to fit my fans, specifically. I think people like to hear good-sounding records when they close the doors. We talked about this before, what people wanna hear in their cars on the way to work and what they wanna hear when they light the candles. It’s a different feeling, and if I can provide it. I’ll try my best. And this is one of those records. It’s smash time. Hit the lights and make sure the bed is ready to be imploded.” “Sex Intelligent” follows the lead offering and title track “Love King” and the slated second single “Make Up Bag,” also featuring T.I. The-Dream has been locked in the studio with T.I. lately, for his own album and the rapper’s forthcoming project, both set for summer releases. “Every record he played me, I was like, ‘Wow.’ I could just feel it,” The-Dream said of Tip . “It wasn’t about judging it. It wasn’t about, ‘Is this a single or is this, that?’ It was just, ‘Wow, where have you been? Where’d you go?’ It was just elevated, and he’s elevated. Right now, he’s rapping like he’s in space. Not a place we don’t know — it’s in the same area — but his vibe is just wider now.” What do you think about The-Dream’s “Sex Intelligent”? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists The-Dream

Couple Arrested For Asking For Directions

“In jail for eight hours — sleeping on a concrete floor next to a toilet,” Kelly said. “It was a nightmare,” Brook said. “I was in there thinking I was just dreaming and waiting to wake up.” (wbaltv.com) http://www.wbaltv.com/news/9229472/detail.html BALTIMORE — Baltimore City police arrested a Virginia couple over the weekend after they asked an officer for directions. WBAL-TV 11 News I-Team reporter David Collins said Joshua Kelly and Llara Brook, of Chantilly, Va., got lost leaving an Orioles game on Saturday. Collins reported a city officer arrested them for trespassing on a public street while they were asking for directions . “In jail for eight hours — sleeping on a concrete floor next to a toilet,” Kelly said. “It was a nightmare,” Brook said. “I was in there thinking I was just dreaming and waiting to wake up.” Collins reported it was a nightmare ending to a nearly perfect day. He said the couple went to a company picnic and watched the Orioles beat Kansas City. It was their first trip to Camden Yards and asked two people for directions to Interstate 95 South when they left. Collins said somehow they ended up in the Cherry Hill section of south Baltimore. Hopelessly lost, relief melted away concerns after they spotted a police vehicle. “I said, 'Thank goodness, could you please get us to 95?” Kelly said. “The first thing that she said to us was no — you just ran that stop sign, pull over,” Brook said. “It wasn't a big deal. We'll pay the stop sign violation, but can we have directions?” “What she said was 'You found your own way in here, you can find your own way out.'” Kelly said. Collins said the couple spotted another police vehicle and flagged that officer down for directions. But Officer Natalie Preston, a six-year veteran of the force, intervened. “That really threw us for a loop when she stepped in between our cars,” Kelly said. “(She) said my partner is not going to step in front of me and tell you directions if I'm not.” Collins reported the circumstances got worse. Kelly pulled 40 feet forward parking next to a curb and put his flashers on while Brook was on the phone to her father hoping he could help her with directions. Both her parents are police officers in the Harrisburg, Pa., area. “(Brook's father) was in the middle of giving us directions when the officer screeched up behind us and got out of the car and asked me to step out. I obeyed,” Kelly said. “I obeyed everything — stepped out of the car, put my hands behind my back, and the next thing I know, I was getting arrested for trespassing.” “By this time, I was completely in tears,” Brook said. “I said, 'Ma'am, you know, we just need your help. We are not trying to cause you any trouble. I'm not leaving him here.' What she did was walk over to my side of the car and said, 'Ok, we are taking you downtown, too.'” Collins said the couple was released from jail without being charged with anything. Brook is now concerned the arrest may complicate a criminal background check she's going through in her job as a child care worker. Collins said police left Kelly's car unlocked and the windows down at the impound lot. He reported a cell phone charger, pair of sunglasses and 20 CDs were stolen. Baltimore City police said they are looking into the incident. added by: learner1776

Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’ Musical Is ‘Daring And Loud,’ Cast Says

‘I am just continually astonished by their artistry and the power and the beauty of these songs,’ director Michael Mayer says. By James Montgomery Billie Joe Armstrong at “American Idiot” on Broadway Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images Green Day’s “American Idiot” musical made its official Broadway premiere at New York’s St. James Theatre on Tuesday night. If the band being moved to tears by the production isn’t motivation enough to make the trip to NYC to see the show, well, we figured we’d let the cast and crew tell you why you should check it out. “As big a fan as someone is of Green Day, they might not even know how much dramatic potential is inside these songs,” director Michael Mayer said. “And they have never heard them sung in this way before, so I think they may have a deeper appreciation of what Billie Joe and Mike and Tre have written. I hope they do [come see it], because I am just continually astonished by their artistry and the power and the beauty of these songs.” Like Green Day said earlier , the “Idiot” musical is a lot like seeing the band live: roaring, loud and unapologetic. But to hear Mayer tell it, there’s also a side most fans can’t see in concert — one that is brought right to the forefront on the Broadway stage. “When you go see them in concert, or you watch their videos or you go see them in any of their work or like awards shows and stuff, anytime that you see them perform, they’re so ferocious,” he said. “They’re wild, but then when you get to know them as people … they’re really sensitive, intelligent, articulate, caring people … and that’s an aspect that comes through in this play, in these songs.” That personal touch extends to the cast of “Idiot” too. Because, growing up, they were all Green Day fans, and doing this musical was most definitely a labor of love. “I always loved their music. I remember loving the song ‘She,’ and we [all] talk about the song ‘Basket Case,’ ” said Rebecca Naomi Jones, who plays Whatsername. “Those old songs are just so good … the driving beats and awesome bass lines and Billie Joe’s voice. And some of the American Idiot songs are just out of this world.” “It blew my mind when I first heard their music. … I can still remember the first time I saw the music video for ‘Basket Case.’ I didn’t have cable, so I had to go to my cousin’s house to watch it,” added John Gallagher Jr., who plays Johnny. “I was mesmerized, but I was also scared of them. I fell for them, I loved all their records, and then I heard American Idiot, and I was like, ‘Wow, these guys have stepped it up.’ And this production is like that album: smart, edgy, daring and loud … but it has so much sensitivity and emotion in it. I have been pinching myself through this entire process, and I can’t see myself stopping anytime soon.” Will you make your way to NYC to see “American Idiot” on Broadway? Let us know in the comments!
