Lindsay Lohan May Have Prescription To Blame For Drug Problems

Adderall may have exacerbated any existing issues, expert says. By Gil Kaufman Lindsay Lohan Photo: OutOfSightMedia/ Getty Images It may turn out that the disease that troubled actress Lindsay Lohan isn’t suffering from is the one that could have caused many of her recent problems. According to TMZ , the doctors at the UCLA rehabilitation facility where Lohan is currently 19 days into a court-ordered, 90-day inpatient stay reportedly believe that the “Mean Girls” star was misdiagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and that the commonly prescribed drug used to treat that disorder, Adderall, may have caused her to exhibit the irrational, manic symptoms similar to those of someone abusing cocaine or methamphetamine. Lohan’s lawyer has not returned requests for comment from MTV News, but Dr. Peter Breggin, a psychiatrist and leading expert on the dangers of the over-prescribing of psychiatric drugs, said it doesn’t really matter if Lohan, 24, was misdiagnosed or not. “Whether or not she was misdiagnosed, [Adderall] will have the same effect,” said Breggin, the author of “Medication Madness: The Role of Psychiatric Drugs in Cases of Violence, Suicide and Crime,” who has not treated Lohan and does not have first-hand knowledge of her case. “It’s a myth that it will have a different effect whether you have ADHD or not,” he explained. “If she was given Adderall, it’s entirely possible she would have a reaction that was indistinguishable from that of methamphetamine or cocaine, including producing manic or psychotic behavior.” While Adderall has helped many teenagers and adults suffering from ADHD gain control of their lives, Breggin said it is possible to become addicted to the drug, which, at high doses can cause out-of-control episodes. Add in an addiction to or chronic use of cocaine and other stimulants and, he said, that person could very easily be susceptible to the abuse of Adderall. “Adderall is pure amphetamine and it changes the neurotransmitters in a similar fashion [as other stimulants],” he said, noting that research in humans and animals has shown that the effect on those vital neurotransmitters is to make the person crave stimulants. “You don’t want to give someone an amphetamine who has or had a craving for methamphetamine or cocaine.” While Lohan has never discussed what issues have sent her to rehab three previous times, she has a history of arrests for drunk driving , including one in 2007 during which police allegedly found a packet of cocaine in her pocket. “You would not want to give anyone, for any purpose, Adderall if they were known to abuse methamphetamine or cocaine. You’re just setting them up for being hooked on Adderall,” Breggin said. Before she went to jail, it was revealed that among the prescription medicines Lohan was taking was the sleep aid Ambien, which didn’t surprise Breggin. “Ambien is sold for insomnia, but it’s a sedative and you use it to come down,” he said. “It’s common to go from a stimulant to a sedative to try to control the experience of going up and down.” Before her pair of DUI arrests in 2007, Lohan was often been spotted drinking late into the night. Breggin said that also didn’t surprise him, since alcohol, like Ambien, is a sedative used to counteract stimulation. The upshot of the alleged misdiagnosis, according to TMZ’s unnamed source familiar with Lohan’s treatment at UCLA, is that the former judge in Lohan’s case, Marsha Revel, may have “overreacted” when she ordered the actress to serve 90 days in rehab. The site claimed that Lohan has been weaned off all the medications she was taking — which also included the serious pain medication Dilaudid, antidepressants Zoloft and Trazodone, and acid-reflux treatment Nexium — with no adverse reaction. She has also reportedly not shown symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. With all that in mind, the new judge in the case will meet with lawyers next week to discuss a possible early release for Lohan from in-patient. After Rare Lapse Into Lucidity, Ed Schultz Reverts to Inane Conspiracy Mongering on Economy

Why does Ed Schultz think Wall Street and “big business” are sitting on $1 trillion in assets? Depends on what week you ask him. Here’s what Schultz said about that during a contentious discussion on July 26 with publisher Mort Zuckerman on MSNBC’s “The Ed Show,” as rebroadcast the following day on Schultz’s radio show ( click here for audio) — ZUCKERMAN: And if you don’t think that the business community doesn’t feel that they’re being, you know, attacked, I’m just telling you, that isn’t the case. They do believe it. SCHULTZ: OK, they may believe that, Mr. Zuckerman … ZUCKERMAN: ‘Cause they are! SCHULTZ: …but credit is tight, money is tight, small businesses getting money is a huge issue, and Wall Street, in my opinion, the bankers, tight with a dollar because they want to see this president fail. ZUCKERMAN: That’s absolute nonsense. SCHULTZ: Well, that’s not nonsense … ZUCKERMAN: That may be your view … Earlier in the interview, Zuckerman said this about hesitancy among business owners to hire more workers after Schultz cited “big time” higher profits for J.P. Morgan and insurance companies ( audio here ) — SCHULTZ: I’m curious, with all of the Wall Street numbers that are out there, J.P. Morgan, their profits up big time, insurance companies are reporting, you know, profits big time again this year. How is that bad for business? How do you see this? ZUCKERMAN: Nobody says that that’s bad for business. Of course it’s not bad for business. And what’s happened to all big companies of America is that they’ve been in a position to significantly reduce their costs. And that, amongst other things, means cutting a lot of jobs in order to do that because they really were very concerned about what was going to happen and what was happening in the economy. A week later, when he was interviewed during his radio show by MSNBC daytime anchor Tamron Hall on Aug. 3, Schultz sang a different tune about “big business” holding tight on $1 trillion in assets — a tune eerily similar to that coming from Zuckerman on July 26 ( audio ) — HALL: I know the president says jobs saved and he says things would have been worse, but still, you’ve got millions of folks out of work who thought that perhaps they would get a boost from the stimulus that they may not see. SCHULTZ: Well, you’ve got a trillion dollars on the sideline right now from big business because they’re afraid of what might happen in the economy , they won’t invest in workers … Alas, the lucidity couldn’t last. Earlier this week, Schultz was interviewed again by Hall during his radio show on Aug. 9 ( audio ) — SCHULTZ:  No one can make the case better than President Obama when he talks about what he has been up against when it comes to Boehner and McConnell and this crowd that has just fought him at every way you possibly can. HALL: But the Republicans say all you need to do is ask, where are the jobs, and that shuts down Democrats on the spot. What do you say to that? SCHULTZ: Well, I don’t agree with that. We’re not peeling off 750,000 jobs a month any more, interest rates are great, the table is set for this economy to come roaring back. We’ve got Wall Street that’s sitting on $1.8 trillion worth of assets because they want to see this president fail. …. which Mort Zuckerman ridiculed as “absolute nonsense” — followed a week later by Schultz parroting Zuckerman.

Lindsay Lohan Could Be Released From Rehab Early

UCLA Medical Center may recommend her release to an out-patient program as early as Friday, according to some reports. By James Montgomery Lindsay Lohan Photo: David McNew/ Getty Images Lindsay Lohan’s court-ordered 90-day stint in a rehabilitation facility may be coming to an end sooner than anyone expected. In an interview with RadarOnline.com , Danette Meyers, the prosecutor in Lohan’s case, said that the staff at the UCLA Medical Center where the actress is being treated are considering recommending that she be released early from the facility. “My understanding from conversations with [Lohan’s attorney] Shawn Chapman Holley is that Miss Lohan could be released early,” Meyers said. “It is looking as if that is what the health-care professionals are going to recommend. … How much earlier she could me released, I’m unsure of at this point.” The Associated Press reported that Lohan could be released as early as Friday (August 13), citing a spokesperson at the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office who said that the actress’ program might be “modified,” meaning that she could switch from an in-patient program to an out-patient program. Lohan checked into the rehab center on August 2, after serving 13 days of a three-month sentence in Los Angeles county jail. She was originally set to begin her program at the Morningside Recovery center in Newport Beach, California, but the judge in her case, Marsha Revel, ordered a last-minute switch to the UCLA facility for what were described as security reasons. (Earlier this week Revel removed herself from the case.) And though Revel ordered Lohan to complete a 90-day stint at the treatment center, Meyers said that the District Attorney’s office will follow the recommendation of the UCLA staff. “I will follow what the health care professionals advise,” Meyers told Radar. “That could involve follow-up treatment for Miss Lohan, however, it is my understanding that it is looking like the health care professionals will be recommending that she be released earlier than the 90 days Judge Revel previously ordered.” Related Photos Lindsay Lohan Goes To Court The Highs And Lows Of Lindsay Lohan Related Artists Lindsay Lohan

Lauren Froderman Wins So You Think You Can Dance

So You Think You Can Dance ended its season finale last night with two broken hearts, one dancer $250,000 richer and everyone in need of a crash cart. The three finalists – Kent Boyd, Lauren Froderman and Robert Roldan – danced eight routines between them, and the All-Stars got quite the workout, too. When the votes came in, Lauren was the winner. The 18-year-old cheerleader from Phoenix, Ariz., pulled a modest upset over Kent, the judges’ and fans’ golden boy from the first audition of the season. “There’s a ton of things I’d like to say,” said Lauren, battling shock, laughter and tears as her name was announced over Kent’s (Robert was ousted first). “But I can’t!” AMERICA’S FAVORITE DANCER : Lauren Froderman deserved the honor! Despite being the only female dancer in the show’s top six this year, Lauren proved week after week that she was a force to be reckoned with, even against Kent. She couldn’t be confined to one particular genre and managed to be sexy, feminine and technically proficient in ways most dancers, even elite ones, struggle to. One awesome, random surprise of the So You Think You Can Dance finale ? Ellen DeGeneres filling in for the injured Alex Wong to get down with some hip-hop. The woman loves to dance. Wonder if there’s something to the fact that producer Nigel Lythgoe is returning to American Idol , which Ellen just left the panel of. In any case, congratulations again to Lauren (and Kent and Robert)!

Lindsay Lohan to Leave Rehab Early Too?

She already got special treatment in jail . Now Lindsay Lohan could get an early release from UCLA Medical Center as well, if the new judge in her case grants it. Judge Marsha Revel, who recused herself from the case this week, ordered Lindsay to spend 90 days in lockdown at UCLA for psychiatric and drug treatment. However, the inpatient program she’s in typically lasts 45 days. When the program ends, new judge Elden Fox could release Lindsay from UCLA and place her in outpatient care. The question is whether that’s likely to happen. It’s “not uncommon” for a patient to repeat a program , according to TMZ, meaning that after 45 days, Lindsay could be given the same treatment another time. Lindsay could be back doing weird fashion shoots before you know it. The treatment is not necessarily redundant because patients often absorb a lot more the second time, having already been through the more difficult first 45. It’s also possible, if not likely that UCLA would customize Lohan’s treatment for the second 45-day stretch based on her unresolved drug and mental issues . Doctors have not decided how long this phase of Lindsay’s treatment should last, and Judge Fox would almost certainly follow doctors’ recommendations. Lindsay has been at UCLA for 11 days after getting sprung from jail after less than two weeks. That was supposed to be a 90-day stint as well, if you recall. Celebrities …
