M organ State University won a three-year, $1.6 million Aerospace Workforce and Leadership Development Grant from the nonprofit Base 11, the university announced on Monday. The award will fund a state-of-the-art rocketry lab and launch a student rocketry team. According to the National Science Foundation, African Americans make up just 5 percent of the science and engineering workforce. Morgan State University President Dr. David Wilson issued this statement: “We are honored that Morgan State University was selected for this competitive grant, and confident that it will further advance our efforts to increase diversity in the STEM talent pipeline, while also turning out workforce-ready talent in high-demand industries like aerospace. Little has changed despite its efforts. Facebook Global Director of Diversity Maxine Williams admitted in 2017 that the pace of change for her company had been slow. Women represented 35 percent of Facebook’s workforce—a 2 percent increase from the previous year. And the company added just 1 percent of Hispanic and African-American employees year-over-year. As poor as that sounds, the tech industry overall had a decline in the number of Black and Hispanic employees. Apple’s diversity report stated that the company worldwide was 68 percent male. Here in the United States, the tech giant was 56 percent White, 19 percent Asian, 12 percent Hispanic and 9 percent Black. “We want to ensure that the next generation of space innovators is just as diverse as America,” said African-American former NASA astronaut Leland Melvin who was on hand to present the check. “I am excited to see this generation of students getting critical hands-on experience in rocket technology, and I encourage Morgan State’s students to seize this incredible opportunity to reach for the stars.” The grant will fund the build-out of a liquid-fuel rocketry lab at Morgan State, as well as the recruitment and hiring of an aerospace faculty leader to create a world-class liquid fuel rocketry program. Morgan State aims to bring together these elements to successfully build and launch a liquid fuel rocket that reaches 150,000 feet by 2022. “At Morgan we encourage our students to be bold and to aim for the stars, and with the launch of this program, we can provide them with the resources to take on that challenge literally,” Wilson added. It all starts with Juju telling Kimbella and Cyn that she has to host an event in Costa Rica and wants them to come with her so they can make it a girls trip. However, there’s a catch. Juju also plans on bringing Yandy. Kimbella says she’s still on cloud nine about her engagement and she’s going to go to Costa Rica regardless and keep it cute. Cyn and Joe have been in a much better space since their therapy session. Their communication is good and they’re having sex again. In fact, they’re in such a good space that Cyn invites Joe (since State of the Culture is going on a break) so they can keep the momentum going. Basically, Cyn is that chick who brings her man on a girls trip. Juju expresses to Yandy that she’s annoyed with Cyn for inviting Joe so Yandy uses this as the opportunity to invite Safaree. Juju isn’t thrilled to see Safaree either because she says he hasn’t really been a good friend to her. Yandy’s explanation is that Safaree is in a weird space (he didn’t go through with the sex toy deal among other career and life stuff) and could use the trip. Plus, he could keep Joe company. Juju begrudgingly agrees. Later on, Maino reveals to Joe that he and Maggie aren’t on good terms right now. Maggie is still mad at him about not taking her rapping seriously so they haven’t spoken in a minute. Maggie is going on the not so girls trip so Joe thinks it’s a great idea to invite Maino too! We’ll see how that goes. Juelz can’t go for obvious reasons. In other news, Alexis Skyy links up with Solo Lucci to discuss the rumors that he helped to perpetuate on #theblogs that he’s her real baby daddy. Them meeting up is really unnecessary because they end up arguing. Basically, Lucci thinks he really could be the father. Alexis says he’s not and that she’s just going through with the test to shut people up so we’ll have to wait and see what’s up with that. Yandy and Juelz meet up in the studio and this is their moment to discuss how awkward things have been between them. In short, Juelz feels like he’s stuck in the middle of Kimbella and Yandy’s drama and wants them to get right so they can move forward. You know what that means, right? They have to have a conversation. We all know how that’s going to go. Now we’re on the not so girls trip to Costa Rica. The catch is, Juju didn’t tell yandy she invited Kimbella so when Yandy sees her at the hotel she’s just like: Eventually, Yandy sits with Maggie and talks about how she’s pissed that Juju didn’t tell her about Kim coming. Then Maggie spills tea about how Jonathan told her that Kim and MariahLynn were talking smack about Yandy being a clout chaser and saying that her adopting Infinity is fake. This obviously riles Yandy up and it’s also the moment Juju shows up. Yandy is no longer open to having a peace talk with Kimbella and threatens to go back to New York. Juju talks all this yang about how she wanted all her girls to be there and she thought they’d be mature enough to be on the trip together. Pero like, is she serious? What did she think would happen? Anyway, Yandy actually does stick around because next week’s preview shows she and Kimbella in another heated exchange. On last Monday's intense episode of The Bachelor , Colton Underwood walked away and seemed to quit the show. He didn't really , of course, but ABC did conclude the installment by fading to black before even airing a rose ceremony, telling fans the storyline would “be continued” this week. Those were the circumstances under which we turned in to The Bachelor yesterday, curious about Colton and where his mind is at these days. But we ended this episode with thoughts about two suitors instead, following their historic decision to truly quit the show. These choices have been teased in our ongoing The Bachelor spoilers section, but you need to scroll down to see how they actually played out… 1. We Started This Week with a Rose Ceremony Gotta make up for not showing it last week, right? Almost right off the bat, Onyeka is sent packing after her explosive fight with Nicole in Miami. 2. What About Nicole? She got the early boot, too, of course. 3. We Move to the Group Date… The women competed in martial arts prior to going to a party, at which Sydney confronted Colton about giving other women more opportunities than her. 4. Why No One-on-One Date? Colton had no answer for Sydney. It’s not like he even picks who is rewarded with these outings. “I feel like ever since someone’s like, ‘Hey, you’re The Bachelor,’ it’s a lot of pressure. Everybody expects me to have everything figured out, and I don’t. I don’t have it figured out,” Colton told Sydney during this emotional chat. “I’m not naive to the fact that there’s other people here and I know every relationship is so different.” 5. Katy Perry has agreed to stop selling a model of her new shoe line that many have slammed for their resemblance to the racial practice of blackface. Yes, this is something that really has happened. The pop music superstar recently released a line of footwear that is on sale as such retailers as Dillard’s and Walmart. We’re not sure what qualifies Katy Perry as someone who knows anything about footwear, but we’ll table that question for a moment in order to focus on the two polarizing examples from this line: The “Rue Face Slip On Loafers” and its high-heeled counterpart, “Ora Face Block Heel Sandal.” As you can see below, the first type of shoe cited above has two eyes, a nose and red lips on them; they come in two colors, black and beige — and it’s the latter that has caused quite an uproar. Why? Because it sure does look like blackface, which was a type of makeup donned by white performers in the late 20th century to mock African-Americans and to accentuate stereotypes against them. The heeled sandals (directly above) are also problematic. For the same reason, as you can clearly see. Many social media users have called Perry out, and even singer Masika Kalysha has commented on the controversy. “So we just gonna let Katy Perry slide?” the artist wrote on Twitter. Perry’s team has said that the star never meant to offend anyone, but also that Katy has agreed to stop selling these items. “In order to be respectful and sensitive, the team is in the process of pulling the shoes,” reads a statement to TMZ. For a few very unfortunate reasons, the topic of blackface has been in the news often of late. The governor of Virginia, Ralph Northram, recently admitted that he attended a party back in college dressed like Michael Jackson. He also previously admitted to being featured in a photo from his high school yearback as someone donning blackface. Elsewhere, it was revealed last week that Joy Behar went out for Halloween in blackface just two years ago. And Megyn Kelly, as you must know, was fired by NBC for asking why blackface is considered racist . It’s the year 2019. How are so many people failing to understand why this is so wrong?!?
Back in August Ben Affleck checked into rehab for the third time . The actor has struggled with alcoholism for his entire adult life, and he sought professional help at the urging of his ex-wife, Jennifer Garner, who staged an impromptu intervention at Affleck’s home before driving him to treatment. These days, Ben is out of treatment, and sources say he’s fully committed to the hard work of recovery. Of course, that means Affleck has had to make quite a few changes in his life, some purely positive, others a bit painful. In the former category, Ben has gotten back together with Lindsay Shookus , the SNL producer he first started dating in 2017. Insiders say Affleck’s drinking interfered with the relationship the first time around, and these days he and Lindsay are happier together than ever before. But of course, not all of the changes in Ben’s newly sober life have been as gratifying as his reconciliation with Shookus. For starters, Affleck has stepped away from his role as Batman in order to focus on his family and his recovery. He does so with the dubious distinction of being the only actor to don the cape and cowl without starring in a standalone film (all of Affleck’s appearances as Batman were in ensemble pieces that functioned as installments in an existing franchise). But Affleck’s been in Hollywood long enough to know that projects don’t always work out as planned, and he likely wasn’t too broken up about the end of his tenure in Gotham. However, the fact that his oldest friendship has begun to fizzle — that may not be sitting so well with the artist formerly known as Batfleck. Yes, according to Star magazine (so take this one with many grains of salt), Matt Damon finds it hard to hang out with Ben now that his former “drinking buddy” has dried out. “It’s not like Matt’s getting drunk and getting in the car – he likes to drink responsibly,” a source tells the tabloid. “But his drinking has absolutely limited the amount of time he can spend with Ben, who’s trying to lead a sober life.” The insider adds that Damon prefers to party with Chris Hemsworth these days because the Aussie actor enjoys knocking back a few Foster’s. “[Hemsworth] never turns down a chance to party with his bros,” the tipster adds. “Matt likes hanging with Chris because he doesn’t have to worry. Being around Ben means he can’t even enjoy a beer.” Not surprisingly, sources close to Damon deny this account. One rep tells Entertainment Tonight that Matt is a “very loyal, stable and grounded friend who only wants success and happiness for Ben.” Yeah, given that Damon’s a 48-year-old father of three with a reputation as a decent guy, we find it hard to believe that he would cut off Ben just because the two of them can’t drink together anymore. Ariana Grande did not attend the 2019 Grammy Awards . As previously detailed, the popular pop star got into a beef with producers over her planned performance, eventually canceling it altogether and skipping the ceremony completely. But while Grande wasn’t in attendance on Sunday night, she clearly tuned in to the event at home. And, boy, was she angry about it! Grande live-Tweeted a significant portion of the telecast. After winning Best Pop Vocal Album for “Sweetener,” for example, Ariana wrote: “I know I’m not there tonight (trust, I tried and still truly wished it had worked out tbh) and I know I said I try not to put too much weight into these things, but f-ck. “This is wild and beautiful. Thank you so much.” She also thanked her collaborators and professional partners, as you can see below: However, Grande’s good mood didn’t last. When it came to the Best Rap Album category, Grande expressed her extreme frustration at Cardi B taking home the top prize over her late ex-boyfriend, Mac Miller. Especially because the Recording Academy had invited Miller’s grieving parents to attend the show. “Trash. F-ck. Bullsh-t. Literal bullsh-t,” Grande Tweeted in response to this result, quickly clarifying that she did not mean to throw any shade at Cardi B: “Nothing to do w her. good for her. i promise. i’m sorry,” she wrote. The singer went on to explain that she was upset on behalf of Miller’s family, who flew out to Los Angeles specifically for the Grammys. “Y’all invited Mac’s parents out and you didn’t give him an award are y’all DUMB? @RecordingAcademy,” a fan tweeted, to which Grande replied: “This. this is what i meant. karen was gonna have a green suit made.” Grande eventually deleted all Tweets related to Miller’s loss. Miller tragically passed away from a drug overdose in September of 2018. He and Grande dated for about two years and only broke up a few months before he died. For whatever it’s worth, Miller was honored during the In Memoriam segment of the show. Last Thursday, meanwhile, Grande blased Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich for saying that Ariana couldn’t perform at the event because she didn’t have time to “pull together” a set. Sources have said Ariana was actually pissed that producers told her NOT to sing the track “7 Rings” due to some plagirism rumors surrounding the hit. “I’ve kept my mouth shut but now you’re lying about me,” Grande fired back on Twitter, adding: “I can pull together a performance over night and you know that, Ken. “it was when my creativity & self expression was stifled by you, that i decided not to attend. i hope the show is exactly what you want it to be and more.” She added: “I offered 3 different songs. it’s about collaboration. it’s about feeling supported. it’s about art and honesty. not politics. not doing favors or playing games. “it’s just a game y’all.. and i’m sorry but that’s not what music is to me.”
