Barbershop Books Empowers Black Boys To Read

A former educator is on a mission to promote literacy among Black youth. Through his program Barbershop Books, entrepreneur Alvin Irby is bringing literature to barbershops across the country to inspire young African American boys to read, the Tuscaloosa News reported. “Once you figure out how students identify,” @AlvinIrby says, “then you can begin to craft [reading] experiences that are customized to who they are and what's most important to them.” Read more: https://t.co/EH3G0IisNt #ThrowbackThursday — Barbershop Books (@BarbershopBooks) January 3, 2019 The inspiration for the program came nearly 10 years ago when Irby saw one of his students at the barbershop, the news outlet writes. The student—who struggled with reading—was idle while waiting for his haircut and Irby thought that would have been the perfect time for him to work on his literacy skills. A few years later Irby—who taught in Harlem and the Bronx—moved forward with the launch of his organization. Irby believes that representation is everything and it’s important for Black youth to see themselves reflected in the literature that they consume. Through the program—which was created for youngsters between the ages of 4 and 8—the young readers provide suggestions for the types of books that they want to see in barbershops. Irby then ships those books to barbershops throughout the country. The program also allows companies, nonprofits, and individuals to sponsor book stations at barbershops within their communities. “I think many children think learning isn’t for them because they’re forced to choose between who they are and school. But you can be who you are and still be brilliant. You can like rap and be a great reader,” Irby told the news outlet. “Barbershops are like a cultural center for black males. For a lot of boys the barbers are a stable male role model and black boys go there regularly.” Since its inception five years ago, Barbershop Books has expanded into nearly 40 cities and is included in 120 barbershops. There has been a major effort to change the narrative surrounding Black youth and literacy. A group of fifth-graders at the Truesdell Education Campus in Washington, D.C. launched a book club after a Black student shared that he struggled with reading because he didn’t see himself reflected in the characters of the books that he was given. SMH: Nevada Inmate Found Dead In Cell After His Execution Was Called Off

Source: Avalon / Getty Inmate Whose Execution Was Called Off Found Dead In Cell A man who was convicted of murder twice–who declared he wanted to die and who Nevada officials said tried several times to kill himself–has been found dead from an apparent hanging after two scheduled lethal injections were postponed, officials said on Saturday. 48-year-old Scott Raymond Dozier was found unresponsive in his solo death-row cell at the state’s maximum-security prison, Department of Corrections spokeswoman Brooke Santina told The Associated Press. Dozier had said repeatedly that he wanted to die instead of spending the rest of his life in prison. “I’ve been very clear about my desire to be executed … even if suffering is inevitable,” Dozier explained in a handwritten note to a state court judge, who postponed his execution in November 2017 over concerns the untried drug regimen could leave him suffocating, conscious, and unable to move. “Just get it done, just do it effectively and stop fighting about it,” the frustrated inmate told The Associated Press in a telephone interview last August. But his bid to become the first Nevada inmate put to death since 2006 was called off twice amid court fights over a three-drug combination that had never been used in the U.S. The starts-and-stops in Dozier’s case propelled Nevada to the top of a national debate about the death penalty and shed light on extraordinary efforts some states take to try to obtain drugs from pharmaceutical companies that insist they don’t want their products used for executions. Dozier gave up appeals for the death sentence he received in 2007 for separate killings of methamphetamine drug trade associates in 2002 in both Phoenix and Las Vegas. Last month, state lawyers revealed in a separate federal lawsuit over Dozier’s treatment behind bars that that he had tried several methods to kill himself in recent months, including attempting to obtain drops of a deadly drug on a piece of paper sent through prison mail. Dozier’s lawyers also revealed that he apparently cut his neck and wrist with a razor in October. Dozier was not on suicide watch Saturday, according to authorities, but was found dead at 4:35 p.m. at the prison in Ely, about 250 miles north of Las Vegas. The prisons spokeswoman said she didn’t immediately know when Dozier had last been seen by guards. Santina said that would be part of investigations by the department’s inspector general and White Pine County sheriff’s office. Continue reading

Get ‘Em: Demi Lovato Goes IN On Instagram Over A Fat-Shaming Advertisement

Source: Sun Sentinel / Getty Demi Lovato Slams Instagram For Displaying A Harmful Ad Demi Lovato took to Instagram on Friday to fight back on an issue she’s long been passionate about stopping: body shaming. Instagram removed an advertisement for a mobile game from their app after the singer posted several IG stories denouncing the ad and asking for it to be taken down.  The sponsored post promoting a game called “Game of Sultans” featured two side-by-side characters, one dubbed “obese” and another called “pretty.” “Why is this fat shaming bull**it on my feed,” the 26-year-old wrote on her Instagram story. “So many things wrong with this ad.” She even tweeted about it to draw attention to the ad and how much of a problem she has with it, urging her fans to “always speak up for what you believe in.” Just called out Instagram and some bullshit game on my insta stories.. go check it out. Always speak up for what you believe in! — Demi Lovato (@ddlovato) January 4, 2019 The message from the ad is basically that only skinny women are pretty–which is clearly wrong and problematic–so Demi took it upon herself to take a stand. “This is absolutely harmful to anyone who is easily influenced by societal pressures put on us from the diet culture to constantly be losing weight in a world that teaches us to equate our value and worth with the way we look and especially anyone in recovery from an eating disorder,” she wrote. “Especially when eating disorders are all about ‘control.’” Lovato goes on to directly call out Instagram for allowing an ad that degrades the way people look on its platform. “Please Instagram, keep this bull**it off mine and other’s feeds who could easily be effected by this disgusting advertisement,” she wrote. “With how aware people are becoming of mental health and mental illnesses, I expect you guys to know better by allowing this advertisement to be allowed on your app. And shame on the game.” Following the post, Instagram ended up apologizing and told  TMZ   the ad violated its terms of service and would be removed. “We’re sorry. This ad was approved by mistake,” the company said. “We reviewed it again and removed it from future delivery in people’s feeds.” Continue reading

Kevin ‘Hood Gyno’ Gates Gives Inaccurate Information About Vaginal Discharge In Women

Source: Prince Williams / Getty Everybody is an expert these days when it comes to anything, just because they’ve read it on the Internet.  Kevin Gates must be an OBGYN and we just don’t know about it, because the Louisiana rapper gave a whole unwanted lesson on Bacterial Vaginosis and Vaginal Discharge in women via Twitter. Bacterial vaginosis, also known as vaginal bacteriosis, is the most common cause of vaginal infection for women of childbearing age. It frequently develops after sexual intercourse with a new partner, and it is rare for a woman to have it if she has never had sexual intercourse. — Kevin Gates (@iamkevingates) January 5, 2019 Bacterial vaginitis (BV) is the most common vaginal infection among women aged 15 to 44 years. Symptoms, if they appear, may include itching and a gray, watery discharge with a “fishy” smell. Untreated BV can lead to serious complications. Treatment is normally with antibiotics. — Kevin Gates (@iamkevingates) January 5, 2019   The information looks like something he copied straight off of Web MD, and folks were calling him out for his “facts” it being hella inaccurate. I dropped out of med school but I can still tell you this wrong as shit Kev. — Just Call Me DJ (@HovsMyUncle) January 5, 2019 But the real question is what was he going through that day to make him want to give lecture on BV. Kevin tweeted: My last two tweets were for the people who believe feminine discharge and a fishy smell is normal – I only tell you this because I love you — Kevin Gates (@iamkevingates) January 5, 2019 Wonder what Dreka has to say about this. The Bachelor Sneak Peek: Is This the Season 23 Villain?

It's the question on the minds of Bachelor fans heading into Season 23, and one Bachelor spoilers can't even answer yet: Will anyone steal Colton Underwood's famous virginity ? And while our latest set of The Bachelor spoilers do appear to offer up an answer, we'll need to wait and watch upcoming episodes to see how this all plays out. In this first clip from the season premiere, however, a different problem arises for the suitors: Someone keeps stealing Underway away… from them! “So, I was just talking to Colton. So, that was great, but I got interrupted… by what's her name,” Tahzjuan says in this clip, which debuted on Entertainment Tonight and which features many contestants at the opening night cocktail party. “Catherine interrupted you?” asks Onyeka, instantly aware of who Tahzjuan was talking about because she suffered the same fate at the hands of this competitor. “I walked away, and he said, 'Fourth time's the charm?'” Tahzjuan replied. “Four times? Everyone should get a chance to talk to him. Everyone! And I told her that,” Onyeka says, before saying even more in a confessional. “What the hell! I can't believe she stole Colton again. I thought we had a great conversation, we hugged it out afterwards and everything,” she tells the camera, adding: “But obviously she doesn't care at all.” It sure sounds like ABC is setting up Catherine to be the season's first villain, huh? Here is the official promotional photo of her: And here's a snapshot of Catherine chatting with Colton on opening night: Will her backhanded tactics pay off? We aren't about to reveal right now whether or not Catherine makes the final four — but we do know the eventual Bachelor winner this season. “It's really frustrating because I have been waiting patiently and being respectful to all the other girls to get my time,” Courtney adds here. “Catherine's just being straight-up rude.” Check out the dramatic footage now!

Hanalei Reponty Topless Surfer of the Day

Hanalei Reponty is a “free surfer” and bikini model…who has a long, lean and hot body that is capitalizing on the whole surfer thing, since being a surfer is a big deal right now, and the whole girls don’t have to surf competitively, they just have to be able to get up on a board or carry a board for an excuse to be in a bikini for people like me to say “look at the surfer”…since the majority of the world have never seen the ocean and if they have it was probably on some resort where they were drunk pissing in the pool for most of the time…cuz that’s where the bikinis were and we never see enough bikini… Hanalei Reponty is obviously also the kind of girl who thinks she’s hot, or knows she’s hot, and is getting naked with that hot skinny body…or topless…because free the nipple…she’s a surfer no need to be all uptight and not topless…you know at one with the sea or some shit… Apparently these are old, but who needs new when a tit is out…even if that tit is on a man faced girl…cuz we don’t realize she’s man faced…when the tit is out.. Stella Maxwell Lingerie of the Day

I don’t believe in lebsianism. It is a myth. So this Stella Maxwell lesbianism seems like bullshit to me. Not because she did a weird porno shoot with a dude for attention the other day… But because Lesbians, like the real die hard and official lesbians don’t look like this, and don’t like girls who look like this. It’s some Hollywood rendition of lesbianism, that is really just a girl into pussy that can take her places, like to the pages of the Victoria’s Secret catalog that I assume they still ship out to married men everywhere to jerk off to. I don’t doubt she eats cunt, or sits on faces…I just doubt her intentions and authenticity….and that is my right to judge, because I am a human with an opinion, stop trying to take that from me. Jesus Take The Attendance Sheet: 32-Year-Old Pretends To Be Teen So She Can Enroll In High School

Source: Mary Knox Merrill / Getty She Really Tried It A 32-year-old woman was clearly up to no good when she pretended to be a homeless teen so she could enroll in high school classes. According to WNYT.com , Michaelann Goodrich told the Cairo-Durham School District in New York that she was a 15-year-old named Riley Madison. She reportedly attended one day of high school classes and even rode the bus to and from school on December 20th. She was absent on the 21st and then the holiday break began the next week. Authorities arrested Goodrich on the 28th and charged her with offering a false instrument for filing, falsifying business records and criminal trespassing. Investigators are still unsure of how Goodrich was able to enroll in classes in the first place. District Superintendent Anthony Taibi said administrators immediately felt something wasn’t right. “She could’ve gone in numerous different ways to obtain a degree and we actually found out through the investigation and that she has a high school diploma,” he said. “So that just leads to our investigation to try to figure out what exactly her motive was for attending school.” According to Taibi, the district had to admit Goodrich into the school immediately under the McKinney-Vento Act because she was homeless. Parents in the neighborhood were obviously distraught when they found out about the over-aged high school attendee. “It was kind of unnerving, it could’ve been anybody you know you hear about school shootings all that, could’ve been anybody coming in here trying to get plans of the school,” said Joshua Mack, who has a daughter in middle school. “I mean obviously that wasn’t the case but it could’ve been.” Taibi said that the McKinney-Vento Act should probably be re-assessed after a situation where non-teens can slip through the cracks. Mack agreed with the sentiment. “I don’t know maybe they need to look into the act a little better maybe find out–not throw her in school right away, find out where she came from, find out what’s going on with the family and everything,” Mack said. The case surrounding Goodrich is still active and investigators are asking anyone who may have had contact with Goodrich to contact the Greene County Sheriff’s Office.

Oh Hell Nah: IRS Won’t Issue Tax Returns During Government Shutdown, But They’ll Still Accept Your Payments

Source: Rita Maas / Getty The Government Shutdown Could Keep You From Getting A Tax Refund If you thought the government shutdown wouldn’t affect your daily life, it might be time to think again. As the partial shutdown approaches its two-week point, concerns are growing that a heavily impacted IRS will delay taxpayers’ getting their refunds . The agency has categorized issuing tax refunds as a “non-excepted” activity — meaning that those tasked with processing refunds would be furloughed during their shutdown. Meanwhile, several types of tax return processing were deemed “Necessary for the Safety of Human Life or Protection of Government Property.” That’s according to a December shutdown plan, which   lays out  the first five business days of the agency’s response during a shutdown occurring outside of tax season. While the document notes the plan can be reassessed and furloughed employees can be recalled,  The Wall Street Journal  reported on Wednesday that the IRS generally does not issue refunds during a shutdown. The IRS plan says that only 12.5 percent of the IRS workforce is authorized to work during a shutdown, while the rest of the agency faces furloughs. That plan could be revised as soon as Friday, as the agency shifts into tax season, which typically starts in mid-January. Budget negotiations to reopen the government have stalled over President Donald Trump’s demand for funding a border wall, which means the risk is growing that tax refunds could be delayed if these aforementioned IRS workers don’t return to work soon.
