M ore than two weeks have passed since a security guard killed an HBCU student for supposedly breaking into cars at an off-campus apartment complex parking lot in North Carolina. DeAndre Ballard, who was a senior at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) in Durham, was shot the night of Sept. 17, but that was pretty much the only fact that was established as local law enforcement has kept quiet about most other details protesters have been demanded ever since. However, a local news reporter tweeted that the 911 call, or calls, were not being released, even though it’s fairly customary to release them to the public under such controversial circumstances. The organizer of the walkout, Jamie Lyn Riggin, said she wanted to increase awareness to the shooting that hasn’t seemed to register a blip on the national media radar. “We don’t stand for things like this to continue to happen,” Riggin reportedly told the group of students who participated in the walkout. “We have pride here as Eagles, and if we are gonna soar, we are gonna soar as one,” she said, referring to the NCCU mascot. The company that still employs the security guard who killed Ballard has defended the deadly shooting by repeating a familiar refrain heard after shootings by law enforcement. “We fully, 100 percent stand by his actions because this was self-defense,” Kevin Ladd, vice president of the N.C. Detective Agency, told the Herald Sun . “In our eyes this is a tragic accident. It never should have gotten to this, but our officer was fearful for his life.” Ballard’s friends and family were adamant that breaking into cars was “out of character” for the physical education major. Students on Monday also questioned how sincere NCCU’s response to Ballard’s shooting was, seemingly trying to distance itself from the incident instead of sympathizing and empathizing. “The university is not associated with and does not have any contractual agreement with Campus Crossings, an independently-owned residential apartment complex,” NCCU said in a statement released Sept. 27. “The NCCU police department officers have no jurisdiction or connection with the Campus Crossings apartment complex nor with the security officer involved in the incident. NCCU does not endorse or recommend any specific rental property for students. Additionally, the university does not utilize the security services of the N.C. Detective Agency and does not hire any officers employed with this particular agency.” Ballard’s killing came amid a spate of violence on or near HBCU campuses. A man was killed Friday near the campus of Southern Universty in Baton Rouge. One day earlier, a Morehouse College student was carjacked and robbed of his belongings near the school’s campus in Atlanta. Three Florida A&M University students had a gun pulled on them in an elevator at an off-campus apartment building in Tallahassee on Sept. 10. The competition was started in 2004 in Biel, Switzerland to showcase the talents of B-Boys (also known as breakdancers by some media) across the globe. B-Boying is one of the celebrated art forms that stemmed from hip hop culture in the late 1970s, along with graffiti writing, DJing, and M.C.ing (now mostly known as rapping). The Red Bull BC One competition has shined light on some of the best dancers B-Boying has to offer and it’s taken place in cities like Berlin, Germany (2005), Johannesburg, South Africa (2007), New York City (2009), and Tokyo, Japan (2010), according to their site . With Zurich as its home in 2018, 16 B-Boys from across the globe battled it out for the 2018 championships. Red Bull also had their first ever Red Bull BC One B-Girl World Final competition for women wanting to prove their skills on the floor. According to Red Bull BC One , judges this year included dancers Benny, Tuff Kid, Junior , Taisuke and Wicket . B-Boys and B-Girls were judged on things like originality, the flow of their moves and the execution of dance skills such as top rocking, footwork, freezes and power moves. You can check out a breakdown of these skills in the clip below! By the end of the competition, Lil Zoo from Austria came out on top as the Red Bull BC One World Champion. On the anniversary of that accident, Dr. Spencer began to suffer from a severe headache. On the third day of that headache, she became unresponsive. Doctors immediately performed a life-saving surgery to remove the bleeding hematoma in her brain. She is now under intense recovery protocol but there is no estimated time of healing as she’s already battled cancer and a spinal injury in her life. There is a GoFundMe to help her with what will be a very expensive journey back to health. Dave East Turns Himself In On Assault Charges Yet another NYC rapper is headed to the courthouse over slapping someone up this week… Dave East is living up to his street rep out here…and it could cost him a few fines and community service time. The rapper is facing misdemeanor assault charges after allegedly popping a man on Pier 40 in NYC while deboarding a party yacht this past July. The incident was caught on camera and briefly went viral on social media: According to TMZ , the man Dave struck, 28-year-old Joel Rosario, says he had no confrontation or even contact with Dave inside the party venue, so he was completely blindsided by the attack and has no idea at all why he hit him. He also claims that he didn’t even know who the rapper was, and police only identified Dave as the man who hit him after an investigation. After the incident, Rosario had to be treated for a laceration above his left eye. Dave turned himself in to police on Tuesday afternoon and was charged with misdemeanor assault and released. Senator Ted Cruz is the latest politician to get caught out there thanks to the White. ABC 13 reports: Two people have been taken to a hospital after they were exposed to a powdery substance in a piece of mail that was sent to Sen. Ted Cruz’s Houston campaign office. The mail was sent to the Phoenix Tower office building, located at 3200 Southwest Freeway. According to HFD, two people were taken to a hospital after being exposed to a white powdery substance. HFD later confirmed that all tests were negative for any hazardous substance. Rosario claims he had no arguments or altercations with East on the cruise and has no idea why he was attacked. He was treated for a laceration above his left eye. East’s attorney, Stacey Richman, spoke to TMZ and said the following: “We appeared as requested to the police precinct and we look forward to reviewing the criminal court complaint and investigating. D onna Alexander was an entrepreneur who also appeared on Bravo’s “Real Housewives of Dallas.” Sadly, on September 24 she died at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, after reportedly being attacked by her ex-boyfriend. SEE ALSO: Texas Cop Shoots Unarmed Black Man For Entering His Own Truck On September 21, Alexander was attacked by her ex, Nathaniel Mitchell, 34, at her home in Grand Prairie. Dallas News reports, “Mitchell, who took Alexander to the hospital, gave staff a story they found to be inconsistent with her injuries, officer Mark Beseda said. Officers interviewed Mitchell and arrested him at the hospital on outstanding warrants.” She had severe head injuries and passed away three days later. Mitchell was originally charged with aggravated assault, but the charge was upgraded to murder when Alexander died. He is being held in Tarrant County Corrections Center on $250,000 bail. Alexander was a mother of two and appeared on “Real Housewives of Dallas.” She also received national attention for creating the Anger Room in 2011, a space that allowed people to break things to relieve stress. Alexander told the Dallas News about the Anger Room, “I always wanted to be able to relate to what people are angry about. Most people have stress from work or home-related issues.” She was also an advocate against domestic violence. Her friend, Delores Hodge, said about Alexander, “For it to be that she expired the same way for something that she was advocating against.
