BET Founder Says He Was Racially Profiled For Keeping Sunglasses On

B ob Johnson , the founder of Black Entertainment Television, recently said that an employee at a luxurious Florida hotel discriminated against him. The billionaire explained that he was racially profiled because he refused to take off his prescription sunglasses. The incident started when a hotel employee told Johnson, who was supposed to stay two nights at the hotel, to take off his sunglasses. No compromise was reached between the two parties, Johnson said. He left the hotel without any resolution and felt “humiliated.” The clerk was adhering to standard policy, a spokesman for Eau Palm Beach said. “It is standard operating procedure in the industry to ask to make sure that the person who is presenting themselves to check-in and they present identification that it does match and if they’re wearing dark glasses with a ball cap low over their face, you want to make sure that it is the same person, much like what would happen at TSA rules going through the airport,” spokesman  Nick Gold  said. “I think it’s a silly rule and I think it has overtones of racial profiling,” said Johnson, who became the first Black billionaire when he sold BET in 2001 and owns several hotels, adding that he would never return to the hotel. Demi Lovato: Leaving LA to Escape "Druggie Friends" [Report]

These days,  Demi Lovato is still in rehab after suffering an overdose that nearly claimed her life back in July. Sources close to the singer say she’s fully devoted herself to the hard work of recovery, dividing her time between an in-patient treatment facility in Arizona and a Chicago psychiatric hospital where she consults with the experts who helped her get sober the first time. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to put one’s life on hold for a month or more in order to attend to one’s health — especially when you’re the head of a multimillion-dollar media empire. And so, while she attempts to get to the root of her relapse and battle the demons that stand between her and a long, healthy life Demi also has to deal with the headaches of the outside world. And of course, she must do all of this while formulating a plan for re-entry into everyday life that will allow her to put into practice the lessons she learned in treatment. That next step was complicated this week by news that Demi is losing control of certain aspects of her life while in rehab. Several media outlets reported that Lovato’s bodyguards have taken up residence in her $9.4 million Beverly Hills mansion. Sources claimed the employees have multiple women living in the house with them and have become a nuisance to neighbors. Now, according to Radar Online, Lovato and her team have reached the decision to sell the house, partially due to the bodyguard situation, and partially because doing so will allow the pop icon to make a clean break with her past. “They do not want her druggie friends knowing where she lives anymore,” one insider tells Radar. “They know that the house will be a trigger for her when she gets out, too” Insiders say that although Demi has a profound sentimental attachment to the home, she’ll be happy to be rid of it, as it’s been a frequent source of aggravation over the years. In addition to the wild parties that took place there, the property itself has caused a fair bit of drama. Last year, Demi was forced to evacuate the home after mudslides put it in danger of falling off a cliff. Sounds like if the sale goes through as planned, Demi will have one less major headache to cope with when she finally leaves treatment, a step she’ll reportedly take sometime before the end of 2018. Eminem Vs. Machine Gun Kelly: A Complete History

View original post here:

Source: Archive Photos / Getty Via | HotNewHipHop The Devil and God are raging across the Midwest. There must be something in the water, as rappers have once again taken to baring their teeth on wax. Though Drake vs.  Pusha T  is primed to go down as the year’s crowning achievement in (arguably one-sided) hip-hop beef, a late-game battle royale between Eminem and  Machine Gun Kelly  has emerged to satiate the bloodthirsty. Dubbed by some as “white-on-white crime,” this seemingly spontaneous conflict has actually been years in the making, with both parties nursing animosity to varying degrees. Fans immediately felt the impact of Em’s fury upon receiving “Not Alike,’ a Bad Meets Evil collaboration that found Machine Gun Kelly catching the ire of Evil incarnate: READ MORE

16-Year-Old Student To Pursue Biology Degree At Howard University

A Black teenager who is displaying excellence in the realm of academia will be taking her talents to Howard University this fall. Read more about her story here: https://t.co/18XUAQzFBB pic.twitter.com/OGwE0UGb5a — Howard University (@HowardU) August 30, 2018 Allen graduated from East Mississippi Community College and was specifically selected to become a Bison. Despite receiving several offers from top schools across the country, the teen knew that she wanted to further her education at Howard. She plans on pursuing a degree in biology and aspires to become a surgeon. “Howard was always my first choice! When I was accepted to Howard, I knew I was ready to go. I was screaming and crying, and I cannot wait to start class,” said Allen in a statement. Allen says her personal experiences inspired her to want a career in the medical field. “A couple of years ago, my father had a massive stroke where a blood clot traveled from his heart to his brain. Since then, I’ve had the interest in cardiothoracic surgery,” she added. Howard has been working closely with community colleges to encourage students to complete their degrees at the Washington, D.C.-based school. The university has established a Transfer Student Association that organizes events throughout the year so that students feel connected to the community. “We know many arrive and don’t feel immediately connected. We make sure that transfer students feel a part of the community since day one,” said Melanie Carter , Ph.D., Associate Provost for Undergraduate Studies. Like Allen, there are many other Black youngsters throughout the country who are entering college earlier than expected. Earlier this year, 11-year-old Baton Rouge native Elijah Precciely received a full-ride scholarship from Southern University. Teen Pushes Tech Innovation In Nigeria Forward

A 15-year-old Nigerian teen is making waves in the tech industry with the creation of an app. Tomisin Ogunnubi ’s My Locator app—which is designed to find children who are lost—has introduced a new level of innovation to the technology sector in Nigeria, BBC reported. Tomisin Ogunnubi was just 12 when she created an app which helps lost children in Nigeria. More here: https://t.co/vWeraT7lr3 #BBCInnovators pic.twitter.com/Q0McuAFJlB — BBC World Service (@bbcworldservice) August 28, 2018 Ogunnubi began coding at the age of 12 and later conceptualized the idea for the app, the news outlet writes. The app—which she unveiled in 2016—utilizes the Google Maps feature to help individuals track those who are lost. There is also a functionality that allows users to add telephone numbers to the app so that they can easily share their location if an emergency were to occur. Since the launch of the app, it has been downloaded over 1,000 times. Ogunnubi says she was inspired to create My Locator because the security of children is something that is extremely important to her. “I was very conscious about security, thinking… there are different dangerous people, so I guess the idea of being able to go out safely might have been what triggered the idea for the app,” she told the news outlet. “But it was me then as my 12-year-old self-thinking, ‘Oh I’ve just learned how to create applications. How about I use what I have learned to create something that can be useful to me and other people?’” Leaders in the tech industry believe that Ogunnubi’s creation speaks volumes about the importance of racial representation in tech. Google Program Manager Aniedi Udo-Obong says Ogunnubi’s journey will encourage other Black children to follow in her footsteps. “I’m impressed with Tomisin’s app for two reasons. I prefer to see products in whatever state they are than to hear about the most brilliant idea. I like the fact that someone hatched an idea in their head and was able to bring it to fruition and complete it,” he said. He also added that there is a need for more STEM education initiatives in Nigeria stating that the country is “going to be left behind if we don’t get our own children learning at the same rate with the same tools and technologies that their contemporaries in other countries have.” Many educational institutions and non-profits are putting the focus on STEM education. Black Girls CODE, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating career pathways for young women of color in the tech industry, announced the development of a technology exploration lab in New York City.
