Editor’s note : Activist Tamika Mallory has faced backlash in recent weeks for attending Saviour’s Day, an annual gathering held by the Nation of Islam in Chicago last month. In an exclusive op-ed for NewsOne , the Women’s March co-chair addresses the criticism, her connection to the event and her commitment to building an “intersectional movement. Source: Dimitrios Kambouris / Getty I proudly serve as a leader for one of the largest women’s advocacy organizations in the world. For that reason, my recent presence at the Nation of Islam’s Saviour’s Day convocation troubled some of the very people who I have fought for and worked alongside for most of my life. I have heard the pain and concerns of my LGBTQAI siblings, my Jewish friends and Black women (including those who do and those who don’t check off either of those other boxes.) I affirm the validity of those feelings, and as I continue to grow and learn as both an activist and as a woman, I will continue to grapple with the complicated nature of working across ideological lines and the question of how to do so without causing harm to vulnerable people. I didn’t expect my presence at Saviour’s Day to lead anyone to question my beliefs, especially considering that I have been going to this event regularly for over 30 years. I first went with my parents when I was just a little girl, and would begin attending on my own after my son’s father was murdered nearly 17 years ago. In that most difficult period of my life, it was the women of the Nation of Islam who supported me and I have always held them close to my heart for that reason. I am the same woman who helped to build an intersectional movement that fights for the rights of all people and stands against hatred and discrimination of all forms. I am the same person today that I was before Saviour’s Day, which begs the question – why are my beliefs being questioned now? I was raised in activism and believe that as historically oppressed people, Blacks, Jews, Muslims and all people must stand together to fight racism, anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. I believe that LGBTQAI people are not an abomination or a creation of man, but simply people, and that religion is not to be used as a tool to abuse, divide, harm, bully or intimidate. Where my people are is where I must also be. I go into difficult spaces. I attend meetings with police and legislators—the very folks so much of my protest has been directed towards. I’ve partnered and sat with countless groups, activists, religious leaders and institutions over the past 20 years. I’ve worked in prisons as well as with present and former gang members. It is impossible for me to agree with every statement or share every viewpoint of the many people who I have worked with or will work with in the future. As I do not wish to be held responsible for the words of others when my own history shows that I stand in opposition to them, I also do not think it is fair to question anyone who works with me, who supports my work and who is a member of this movement because of the ways that I may have fallen short here or in any other instance. My fellow Women’s March leaders believe that we can be the bridge to connect different groups in the name of our shared liberation. We don’t just step into difficult spaces, we create new ones. I am guided by the loving principles of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. , though I have fallen short of them at times. And it is with the belief that “non-violence seeks to win friendship and understanding” and “non-violence seeks to defeat injustice, not people” that we organized a march on January 21, 2017, that 5 million people participated in worldwide; and we have been guided by those values the whole way through. It is my intention to walk the tradition of Dr . Dorothy Height , successor to Mary McLeod Bethune as President of the National Council of Negro Women. In 1995, she faced criticism for participating in the Million Man March, which was organized by the Nation of Islam. Financial support was withheld from her organization, and there were attempts to bully and intimidate her. Nevertheless, she stood strong and proudly addressed the massive crowd of Black people who gathered on the National Mall. Her first words? “I am here because you are here.” I also take cues from my mentor, Hazel N. Dukes , President of the New York State Conference of the NAACP, who has brought together Muslims, Blacks and Jewish people and clergy from all denominations. Her office and her home are open to gang members, teen mothers and formerly incarcerated people as well. Coalition work is not easy, and these women have operated from a place of authentic love for all people. My work requires an operational unity that is sometimes extremely painful and uncomfortable, even for me. But I push forward even when I am personally conflicted because our people are more important. – Tamika D. Demi Lovato is not shy about sharing photos of her massive cleavage online . And, as she’s made more and more clear in a handful of recent interviews, the singer isn’t shy about admitting that this cleavage is no longer reserved for the opposite sex, either. If a woman wants to fondle it, hey… Lovato might be down! “I’m very fluid, and I think love is love,” Lovato says in the new issue of InStyle, adding very simply: “You can find it in any gender. I like the freedom of being able to flirt with whoever I want.” The artist, of course, famously dated Wilmer Valderrama for six years. She was then linked to MMA fighter Guilherme “Bomba” Vasconcelos. But just because Lovato is yet to officially date a female, the artist has said many times now that she’s bisexual and would consider it . “I am open to human connection,” Demi said in her YouTube documentary, “Simply Complicated,” adding very basically in this video: “I love who I love.” Right now, however, Lovato is single. She is not actively loving anyone. But this doesn’t mean she’s sad or regretful or lonely or anything like that. “I’m not suffering because I’m alone,” she tells the magazine, explaining her evolution as follows: “There were many years I was in a relationship and I wasn’t learning about myself. Now I’m learning about what I like, what I need, and what I want.” In other words: Demi has matured. She’s just had to do it at times in the spotlight, which can be a challenge for anyone, let alone someone with a history of drug abuse and who has been diagnosed as bipolar . “You have to speak out about stuff. You have to use your voice for good,” the star says. This is certainly something Lovato has done, getting very deep and very personal with how she formerly abused her body . She continues: “I didn’t have anybody who was doing that when I was younger. I grew up in the era of really, really skinny celebrities. That was the look. “And it was cool to be seen partying. Drugs were glamorized, and when I was 12 or 13, nobody [I looked up to] was talking about mental illness. “Nobody was talking about eating disorders. Nobody was talking about cutting. I wanted somebody for my little sister to look up to. “I took on that role because I knew it was important.” We’ve said so many times that we admire Lovato for her candor and the way she has handled these kinds of struggles. But it really can’t be said enough, can it? View Slideshow: Demi Lovato: 19 Candid Confessions from Her Documentary Demi also appreciates her status as a role model. She has often answered questions from fans and has always encouraged them to turn to her with any issues to which she can relate. “They’re very emotional. A lot of times people use that opportunity to dump their problems on me because they don’t know who else to talk to,” Lovato says of her meet and greets, concluding: “They show me their cuts. I’ve had people come up to me and say, ‘I was going to kill myself until I got this meet and greet.’ And you’re just like, ‘What?’ “Sometimes I’ll meditate afterwards. Sometimes I’ll just kind of breathe. I used to sage myself. It’s very heavy.” We can only imagine.
A reward for information on Timothy Cunningham , the missing public health service commander at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, had grown to more than $24,000 on GoFundMe on Tuesday. Cunningham, 35, has disappeared after leaving work early and was last seen or heard from February 12. The disappearance has been especially difficult for Cunningham’s parents and his sister, Tiara Cunningham. The family is “remaining positive and prayerful” through their rough time. “I have been trying my best to go through daily activities such as work without getting distracted,” Tiara Cunningham told ABC News in a text message on Tuesday. “But no one can really prepare you for seeing your face or your brother’s face on the news while at work.” “I feel like I’m in a horrible ‘Black Mirror’ episode,” the sister of a missing CDC employee said https://t.co/FI18Ur5tOA — NYT National News (@NYTNational) February 26, 2018 The family waits for Cunningham’s safe return, they are trying to continue to stick together. “So it’s a new normal that isn’t normal and many people won’t understand,” Tiara Cunningham added. The reward of more than $24,000 via GoFundMe has grown tremendously since the page was launched 15 days ago. Private donations, as well as donations from the family, contributed to the reward increase, Atlanta Police spokeswoman Lisa Bender told ABC News. The support for the Cunningham family has been strong since the public first learned of the Morehouse grad’s disappearance more than three weeks ago. “I was overwhelmed by the support both locally and nationally,” Cunningham’s sister also said. “The support of the public is indicative of how impactful Tim’s reach is,” she added. “He regularly participated in service events around the city. He served citizens in New York City during Hurricane Sandy and was ready to deploy to service in his capacity.” Before his vanishing, Cunningham was upset after being denied a promotion, police said. No foul play is suspected in the case. Last year, Kenya Moore made a choice to marry for love and respect her husband’s desire to not become a reality star. That decision may cause her to lose her peach. Kenya’s tried hard to make up for it, but it looks like she might be fired and replaced with Kim Zolciak . Ouch. Now it’s really looking like her time as a reality star is over, because producers are apparently on the hunt for fresh talent. RadarOnline reports that The Real Housewives of Atlanta producers are looking for new Housewives . Their source dishes on the process: “They are meeting so many new women and signing them up to film casting reels.” Some shows have potential contestants film their own casting reels, but they clearly want to see how these women perform with Bravo’s cameras rolling. “They want new Housewives in Atlanta and they are already testing a few ladies.” There’s no way of knowing if they’re filming them with each other, with hired actors, or even with existing cast members. But we imagine that they’ll hold off on introducing them to the main cast until a couple of big decisions are final. By big decisions , we mostly just mean whether or not Kenya is getting the boot. “They’re going to make the official call about Kenya and the other ladies right after the reunion.” That will be a huge decision, for the show but especially for Kenya. And also for Kim Zolciak who, as we’ve mentioned, has merely been a friend of the Housewives on this past season. “Kim coming on board full time won’t be determined until after the reunion is taped.” And a certain friend of NeNe Leakes’ status as a friend of the show may carry on … but they haven’t made that decision. “And Eva Marcille may or may not be brought back yet.” If you don’t quite remember what landed Kenya Moore in hot water in the first place, wonder no more. Last year, she had a secret wedding in which she married Marc Daly without the presence of any of Bravo’s cameras or producers. The whole point of being a Real Housewife is that the show follows your life, particularly huge milestones like a wedding. Unfortunately for Kenya, the man with whom she fell in love isn’t just camera-shy — he believes that The Real Housewives of Atlanta portrays black men in an unfairly negative light. His refusal to film with her means that Kenya has less screen time. Producers have reportedly been considering firing her and replacing her with someone who is committed to the role. Since then, she’s tried everything to get back on the good side of producers by showing that she doesn’t need her married life to be interesting. Kenya even went so far as to fake an explosive meltdown while the Housewives were doing charity work. But it clearly has not been enough. Kenya couldn’t go on the Barcelona trip. And the footage of her crying while her husband’s out of town isn’t exactly the sort of Real Housewives content that keeps viewers’ eyes glued to their television sets. Reportedly, this has already cost her $100,000. And she may be booted from the show. Kenya Moore’s loss could be Kim Zolciak’s gain, as the Don’t Be Tardy star and mother-of-six really wants to be a full Housewife again . Kim has never, ever shied away from the camera, and that goes for her whole family. But if producers are looking for new applicants, it may be that they’d prefer a fresher face. Some say that, if Bravo does fire Kenya, they’ll be punishing her for falling in love. Others say that they’ll be punishing Marc Daly for taking a moral stance against what he believes to be harmful content. Others, however, say that it’s just good business. They see Kenya Moore’s behavior as breach of contract or failure to live up to the role of Housewife. Maybe it’s someone else’s turn to receive a peach. Until last week, Dayanna Volitich was a beloved social studies teacher at Crystal River Middle School outside of Tampa. Tiana Dalichov is a popular podcast host who has made a name for herself preaching hate and bigotry to an audience of like-minded white nationalists. Needless to say, Volitich’s bosses were shocked to find out they’re the same person. According to The Washington Post , Volitich is a self-professed anti-Semite who believes Muslims should be eradicated from the Earth and that whites are genetically superior to other races. For the past year, she lived a double life and carefully concealed her abhorrent worldview from teaching colleagues while actively spreading hate on the internet. Over the weekend, parents in the Citrus County School District were notified that Volitich had been exposed in a piece published by Huffington Post and was promptly fired as a result. “On Friday, March 2, 2018 the Citrus County School District was made aware of a concerning podcast by a Huffington Post reporter. The reporter indicated they believed one of the persons participating in the podcast was a teacher at Crystal River Middle School,” reads a statement on the district’s Facebook page. “The Human Resources department was notified and an investigation was initiated immediately. The teacher has been removed from the classroom and the investigation is ongoing. “Pursuant to Florida Statute an open investigation and materials related to it are exempt from public record and cannot be discussed until the investigation is complete,” the statement concluded. Frighteningly, on her podcast, Volitich spoke of going to great lengths to hide her beliefs, and she encouraged other white nationalists to “infiltrate” America’s public schools as teachers. “I’m pretty hyper aware that [administrators and colleagues] will be watching. They’ll be listening, and so I’m getting a little more underhanded,” Volitich told a guest on her podcast. “I was able to anticipate when they would be there to evaluate, and so I did what I was supposed to do. I danced like a little puppet, and I waited until they were gone,” she added. In a statement released to a Tampa-area media outlet, Volitich claimed that her podcast was a work of satire and was not meant to be taken seriously: “None of the statements released about my being a white nationalist or white supremacist have any truth to them, nor are my political beliefs injected into my teaching of social studies curriculum,” Volitich’s statement reads. “While operating under the Russian pseudonym ‘Tiana Dalichov’ on social media and the Unapologetic Podcast, I employed political satire and exaggeration, mainly to the end of attracting listeners and followers, and generating conversation about the content discussed between myself and my guests.” On her popular Twitter page, Volitich/Dalichov tweeted that she “may disappear for a while” following this week’s revelations. Within 24 hours, the account had been deleted. Volitich’s whereabouts are currently unknown.
