CASSIUS Chats: Blair Underwood Believes There Is Hope For Us Yet

See the article here:

Source: Paul Morigi / Getty W e now know what happened in the park that night in April 1989. A gruesome crime. The police and city roaring with anger. They rounded up all the Black and brown youths in the park they could find. They forced them to talk, despite all evidence to the contrary, about a grizzly happening they hadn’t committed. Their names are Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson, Antron McCray, Yusuf Salaam, and Korey Wise. They had a lawyer named Robert Burns, who — in director, writer, and documentarian Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us — is played by the always neatly spooled Blair Underwood. History, ours and America’s, is as alive as we are. History walks with us. It speaks to us as we wonder how events in the present have come to be. It aligns us: through memory, through DNA, through culture. It weds itself to our perceptions. It twists evidence, where damp grass only so wide now finds itself a cesspool big enough for five bodies instead of one. The Central Park Five is a part of that history. They are children of that history. They bear the scars of American selfishness, its intolerance, its admittedly complex sense of grandeur and its self. New York City has an outsized presence in that self. In that way, it embodies the worst of America’s campaign to turn Black people into its shadow. The Central Park Five have a Sarah and Ken Burns documentary in their shadow. But Ava DuVernay has unearthed this story to tell it differently—for Netflix, of course, because for who else? And for love, because for what else? When They See Us , then, is as dramatic as American history. Somehow, as the title suggests, Black people are without form until, suddenly, they come into view trying to survive through roiling waters in New Orleans or hanging large through New York City’s monumental patch of green. Then, before your eyes, children become hardened criminals. Humans aching to survive become pariahs. To help bring this harrowing tale to life, Blair Underwood had to embody the role of a man who was in way over his head and ill at the time of the trial. Salaam didn’t know this at the time, but his lawyer was on medication, which would explain why he’d nod off during the trial at times. Why he’d ramble at points. Bobby Burns would die soon after the trial ended. He was more Salaam’s family friend than a crack-pot attorney, but in trying times all Salaam’s mother knew was to try. CASSIUS: What did you know about the five before you were cast? Blair Underwood: I knew the broad strokes of the case. I knew a white, female jogger had been brutally assaulted, beaten, and raped. I knew that five young Black and brown boys –– four African-American, one Latino, were accused of it. And I knew there was a rush to judgment. I knew that days later Donald Trump had taken a number of full-page ads out calling for the death penalty of these young boys–– literally within days. Before any trial. Before any facts came out. Before any notion of due process. Those were broad strokes that I knew. So when I came to the project, I had an opportunity to do a deep dive into the attorney for Yusuf Salaam (Bobby Burns), to really learn about the specificity of the case and the lack of evidence. [To learn about] the complexity of having videotaped confessions coerced and also being falsely accused and eventually being exonerated. But what these four one-hour films bring is the opportunity to dig deep and delve into their personal lives. [It] makes you feel the injustice, even more, this miscarriage of justice even more. C: Why do you think this case was such a large datapoint in New York City and American history? BU: First you had a brutal crime. And brutal crimes happen all the time, but you had the brutal crime of a white woman. So, you inject and have the confluence of race because you have five Black and brown boys. That’s what you have to remember. They were boys. They were children. They were 14, 15, 16-years-old. They were accused of doing this crime. And this was in the midst of many crimes around Central Park. So this did not happen in a vacuum. People were afraid. People were scared. And somebody did that crime, we found out later because a guy who was a serial rapist around uptown manhattan confessed to it. And then again you have a high profile real-estate magnate like Donald Trump at the time calling for the death of children. That’s what he was calling for. To bring back the death penalty with no facts on hand of who did it. And we have to remember there were a crime and an injustice. And the meaning of justice is to have a balance of right and wrong, good and bad, and the understanding of that and the administering of justice. That’s why I love the title of this film When They See Us. The inference is When They See Us , not always, but too often people fear when they see men of color. But the double entendre is When They See Us in the film they can see us for who we really are. You got me preachin’ this morning, brother! [Laughs] C: As someone with children, did you have to bury the anger that comes with seeing children put in harm’s way or did you use it for the role? BU: I don’t think you bury it. I don’t think you bury any of those emotions. In fact, our jobs as actors, our jobs as artists, and our job as storytellers is to bring those emotions and thoughts and fragility and weaknesses and strengths –– all of that which makes up our humanity to the character. I think you have to. But that’s a general statement. Particularly to my character, Robert Burns was a family friend to Yusuf Salaam. He was actually Yusuf Salaam’s mother’s divorce attorney. So he really was in over his head when it came to the case. He’d actually never done a criminal case as he was a divorce attorney. But they had a certain amount of trust in him and had a certain amount of loyalty to him. Legally, I’m sure they could have made better choices, but he gave them a sense of calm and comfort when he was on the case. C: What kind of research did you do that helped you embody Robert Burns? BU: Most helpful, after Ava gave us all a dossier on the case, was talking to Yusuf Salaam and seeing how he saw Robert Burns. And he saw him as a kind of father figure. And Robert Burns, by all accounts, felt the same way towards him and very much wanted to protect him. Regardless of his experience as an attorney, he wanted to protect him as best he could and the Salaam family trusted him. C: I know this is a naive question, but what do you think made everyone involved so quick to condemn these children in the way they did? BU: Well that is the topic of conversation in the news every day now. The othering of people. Demonizing, vilifying those that are different than us. We hear that from the high prophets of the land and we really have to fight against that and try to find our commonality. So that’s a big question. There’s a lot to how we got to this point in our country and the way race relations are. Listen, I’m a hopeful person and I see hope in the future generations. I see hope in your generation and in the future generations because you look at race relations in this country and those people who are trying to turn the clock back, that’s a losing game. C: If this case happened today, do you think there would have been a similar miscarriage of justice or do you think we’d have been more thoughtful as a society toward them? BU: [Laughs] I would say there would be an attempt to have the same miscarriage of justice. I don’t think it would work as easily, if at all. You think about what has changed since then and, yes, there’s social media, but [there’s] also that we’re all photojournalists. We all have cameras, computers in the palm of our hands. Most people in a metropolis like New York City have phones. It doesn’t change things completely, sure, if you look at [the case of] Eric Garner, for example, but it makes it a little more difficult for those doing things to get away with it. It doesn’t stop it, but it’s another tool in the arsenal. So, yeah, I think there are definitely those people who would like to keep the status quo. Keep all the Black and brown people in their place. But those days are gone.

People Are Going IN On Kylie Jenner For Not Knowing How To Wash Her Face

Source: Jon Kopaloff / Getty Fans Really Aren’t Buying The Supposed Benefits Of Kylie’s New Skincare Line Kylie Jenner’s new skincare line, Kylie Skin, has everyone talking–but not all of the chatter surrounding this launch is for the right reason. It goes without saying that Kylie’s line of makeup is one of the most successful in the industry, but when the youngest KarJenner sister announced that she was coming out with a line of skincare products, people weren’t exactly on board. It’s a lot like that time her sister Kendall Jenner announced she was the new face of Proactiv–people simply don’t believe that million(or billion)aires use the same products on their faces that us regular folk do. And even if they do use the same face wash, those expensive facials and other treatments are probably doing a lot more for them than the Cetaphil, so it’s probably better not to take their skincare routine to heart. Following Kylie Skin’s initial backlash–and some additional criticism for releasing a “walnut scrub” that many skincare experts deemed harmful–the biggest slack Jenner has caught regarding this launch is for a video she posted of her washing her face. View this post on Instagram morning and night A post shared by Kylie Skin by Kylie Jenner (@kylieskin) on May 29, 2019 at 5:35am PDT As seen in the clip above, not only does Kylie wash her face for a total of 7 seconds, but when she dries it off, a huge streak of foundation is left on the towel–a pretty clear indication that she didn’t do a great job of cleansing her makeup. This can be seen as one of two things: Either the product doesn’t actually work, or the filming of that video was Kylie’s first time actually using her own product. Both are pretty bad ways to have your company represented. With the release of this latest video, people all over social media are clowning Kylie for not knowing how to wash her face–and the jokes are absolutely endless. From quips about Kylie washing her face like someone who can afford a new one to her whole skincare launch being a scam, check out the funniest takes on Ms. Jenner’s brand new line and the accompanying promos. Sis the towel still has foundation left on it… — S (@Powerinthehair) May 29, 2019 Kylie Jenner is doing skincare tutorials with filters and her foundation is still on after she washed her face. Scam today. Scam tomorrow. — Morgan Jerkins (@MorganJerkins) May 29, 2019 Imagine buying face wash from someone who doesn't even know how to wash their face properly. — Thato (@Mahaliah) May 29, 2019

Ronnie Magro Bashes Jen Harley: What an IDIOT!

Folks, it looks like we may be in for yet another Ron-page! As you may know, the tumultuous relationship between Ronnie Magro and Jen Harley is still, unfortunately, a thing. And despite the fact that the couple enjoyed a rare, violence-free date night last week, it doesn’t look like they’ve learned to keep their tempers in check. Or at least that’s the impression fans are getting from Raaahhhn’s Instagram Story at the moment, Magro posted a meme that many are interpreting as a veiled shot at Jen. The post features current Meme King Kermit the Frog along with some sage advice: “Date someone who has plans for the future, not an idiot that has plans for the weekend #growth,” the meme reads. Now, it could be that Ron simply saw that joke elsewhere, thought it was funny, and decided to share it. Or it could be that Ron finally checked out A Double Shot at Love starring his former housemates Vinny and Pauly, and he found himself overwhelmed by the idiocy of the world, which is a common reaction to watching that show. Whatever the case, this is the internet in 2019, which means the hot take interpretation has reigned supreme on social media. Many are now convinced that Ronnie and Jen have broken up again and this is Ron’s way of subtly roasting his ex on the Gram. Sadly, that doesn’t seem to be the case. For one thing, when have we ever known Ron — or Jen, for that matter — to be subtle? Every time these two break up, they hurl more insults than the president on a heavier-than-usual Adderall binge. Sometimes, the situation escalates even further and someone gets dragged by a car . What they don’t do is insult one another with passive-aggressive memes. Not only is this not Single Ronnie behavior, the latest interactions between Magro and Harley seem to indicate that all is well in their relationship. Last we checked, Ronnie and Jen were pretending to get married , which is the stuff of nightmares at this point. Look, we appreciate that these two are trying to make it work for the sake of their daughter, but if Ron puts a ring on it, it may be time for his Jersey Shore family to intervene. After all, Magro has already given Harley many, many shots at love. View Slideshow: Jen Harley: What Arrest?? I’ll Be Back on Jersey Shore, You Wait!!!

Wendy Williams Net Worth REVEALED During Messy Divorce

Wendy Williams is finally, finally divorcing her cheating husband, Kevin Hunter, who wants alimony for life . The same guy who’s been riding her coattails for years wants to continue living a life of leisure at Wendy’s expense. Just how much is Wendy’s net worth, anyway? Wendy Williams put a lot of work into her career. She studied journalism and communications at Boston’s Northeastern University, graduating with a degree in 1986. Wendy then got her start in professional radio broadcasting on a Virgin Islands radio station called St. Coix’s WVIS. Six months later, the New Jersey native relocated to New York, where she landed a job at WBLC. There, Wendy created her own segment, The Wendy Williams Experience . Her autobiographical radio segment was outrageously popular, at times bringing in as many as 12 million listeners. At the time, she was mostly just discussing her personal life. She was about 20 years into her broadcasting career when she branched out into print media with her book, Wendy’s Got Heat . Since the success of that book, she has penned a number of others. It was not until 2008 that Wendy made the leap from radio to television. So what has all of that success brought her? Multiple outlets, including Good Housekeeping , estimate Wendy’s net worth as totally about $40 million. Wendy’s current salary is reported at about $10 million per year. That is a sizable, eight-figure fortune. And while her job at the moment seems to be mostly just sitting in a chair and gloating about the misfortunes of other famous people, she did a lot of work to get where she is. As we reported, Kevin Hunter is asking for alimony from Wendy. Notably, he worked as a producer on her show until just a few weeks ago, and is expected to receive a settlement from the show now that he’s been canned. But let’s be real — Wendy was the real breadwinner. A court may very well decide that Kevin, despite his outrageous cheating, deserves some degree of alimony from the woman he betrayed. That didn’t sit right with their young adult son — which led to a physical fight between father and son. Just over a week ago, Kevin Hunter allegedly attacked his son in a parking lot while they were out shopping together. According to reports, he is said to have put 19-year-old Kevin Hunter Jr into a headlock. In order to free himself, Wendy’s son punched his father in the face — and was then arrested by police. (In domestic violence situations when family have been fighting, it is often the policy to arrest whichever party appears to have done the most damage) The reason for their fight that led to Kevin Hunter Jr’s heroic action was that he had confronted his dad about demanding alimony payments. Kevin then accused his son of having been brainwashed by his mother. For the record, a teenager doesn’t need to be under hypnosis in order to see the dynamic between his parents for what it is. One party ruined his marriage by cheating but still wants to keep all of the benefits of being married to a successful entertainer. Unless … has Wendy brainwashed  us , too? That would certainly explaining why we can’t help but side with her in this divorce. Even before the dude allegedly assaulted his son in a parking lot, Kevin Hunter didn’t seem like he deserved Wendy’s fortune. View Slideshow: Kevin Hunter: Who is Wendy Williams’ Awful Husband?

Lamar Odom: I’m Totally Getting Back Together With Khloe!

Lamar Odom has been in rare form lately. Actually, he probably behaves like this quite often, but we don’t know about it because the world collectively decided to stop paying attention to Lamar sometime around 2016. Anyway, Lamar has a new memoir out, and in order to promote it, he’s dredging up the past and airing his dirty laundry like never before. Lamar’s revelations started out bonkers and got even more batsh-t with time. He started off by telling the world that he slept with over 2,000 women , many of them while he was married to Khloe Kardashian. From there, things got progressively more insane, as Odom revealed that he threatened to kill Khloe on at least one occasion. As you can imagine, Khloe is somewhat less than thrilled with being forced to relive her abusive relationship publicly. But despite the fact that he must know this whole experience is extremely painful for his ex, Lamar persists in blathering about Khloe. The worst part is that he seems to be doing it purely exploitative reasons, essentially mining his disastrous marriage for promotional material. Actually, on second thought, the worst part might be that Lamar is still envisioning a future in which he gets back together with Khloe . Asked about his pie-in-the-sky fantasies of reconciliation during a recent interview with Us Weekly, Lamar revealed that he’s “still open” to the possibility of giving his marriage a second chance … as though ending it was his idea. “As far as I’m concerned, but that’s a better question for her,” he elaborated, clearly sending the message that he’s just waiting for her to give the go-ahead. Yes, Lamar certainly knows how to win back a mistreated ex — further traumatize her by forcing her to publicly relive the worst parts of the relationship! The last time KhloMar spent any real time together is when Odom suffered an overdose that nearly claimed his life. When Us asked Lamar what message he would like to send to Khloe about how he’s changed since those dark days, he offered up a bunch of meaningless platitudes: “I’m just a different man now,” he told the tabloid. “You know what’s so crazy that you say that because I remember when I came out of the coma [in 2015 after a drug overdose], and I moved in the house in Calabasas in the same housing community that she lives in.” “Because I was still damn near fried or just basically getting over being fried, I didn’t even know how to show her that I was empathetic, you know what I’m saying, and sorry and that I still loved her,” Odom continued. “I didn’t know how to go about it.” We’d say it’s pretty clear he still doesn’t know how to go about expressing empathy. In fact, it seems Lamar is making Khloe’s situation way, way worse with every word that comes out of his mouth. View Slideshow: Lamar Odom: 17 Most Bat$hit Crazy Bombshells from His Memoir

Teen Mom OG Cast to MTV: PLEASE Don’t Replace Bristol Palin!

The past 18 months have seen a lot of shakeups in the Teen Mom franchise. It all started when Farrah Abraham got fired from Teen Mom OG back in December of 2017. Though no one could ever hope to fill Farrah’s shoes in terms of batsh-t drama, MTV tried by hiring Bristol Palin and Cheyenne Floyd . Floyd turned out to be a good fit for the cast — Bristol, not so much. The daughter of former Alaska governor Sarah Palin quit the show after just one season, claiming that the life of a reality star was simply not for her. (Bristol has appeared on numerous other reality shows, including two that were based entirely on her life and were quickly canceled, so she probably just didn’t enjoy appearing on this particular series, but whatever …) In a recent interview with Us Weekly the remaining OG cast (the OGs of OG, if you will) were asked for their thoughts on the possibility of MTV hiring a replacement for Bristol. Not surprisingly, the ladies were less than thrilled with the prospect of sharing screen time with another newcomer, thus rendering them more inessential to the series’ future:  “No, we’re good,” Amber Portwood told the tabloid. “No new friends,” echoed Maci Bookout. “No, I’m good with just four,” Catelynn Lowell added. Like we said, the responses are not surprising — but they’re more than a little misguided. It appears this is a case of employees mistakenly believing they’re management. You see, Bristol was added to the cast — and paid more than the rest of the moms — for very good reason: Teen Mom OG ratings have been plummetting for years, and they took a sharp nosedive after Farrah got fired. Love her or hate her, Ms. Abraham’s insanity made her a reliable ratings magnet — something the show is sorely lacking these days. The current cast might like things the way they are — but surely they’d prefer keeping their jobs over joining Farrah on the unemployment line. As for her own experience on the show, Floyd said that after a rocky start, she feels she’s been fully embraced by the Teen Mom community: “I don’t think people thought that we would mesh so well, but I think we all went in and we’re [thinking], ‘No judgment, open minds, let’s get to know each other in a real organic way.’” Cheyenne told Us. “I feel like we’ve done that.” Sounds like Cheyenne is well aware that there’s bound to be a lot of ups and downs living in the public eye in 2019 — but ultimately her cushy job and six-figure paycheck make it all worthwhile. The other moms might do well to emulate her attitude. View Slideshow: Teen Mom OG Cast to Bristol Palin: Goodbye or Good Riddance?

Jennifer Lopez Pussy Sweat of the Day

Jennifer Lopez ….or as I like to call her – Soggy bottom boy – is like most menopausal women, at least from what I’ve learned watching Whoopie Goldberg on the View, which involves losing control of their bladders, peeing themselves when they laugh, that kind of thing….incontinence but not willing to wear one of those pee pads they advertise on TV cuz it will make her cunt look weird in her spandex…. In denial about getting old, willing to walk around like she pissed herself to continue that denial…or maybe she’s got some kind of infection…from all the years of being banged out…and is not her pissing herself at all. Or maybe A-Rod busts in her so hard and so much cuz she’s a pervert tyrant slut who needs her pussy filled to decompress and it’s just pouring out of her… Or maybe it’s just good old fashioned pussy sweat…from a hot day, or in J.Lo’s case, maybe it’s just ass sweat, cuz her ass is so big, and has extra sweat glands to keep her lubricated enough for anal sex…. Either way…I bet you’d like to drink a cup of it….cuz it’s full of stem cells and other things she’s been eating to stay youthful to make more money despite being old and having enough money… JOIN THE NEWSLETTER YOU ASSHOLES! Wu Ain’t Nothing To Fuzz With: RZA Backs NYC Fur Ban With Letter To City Council

Source: Michael Loccisano / Getty RZA Supports New York City Fur Ban With Letter To City Council If you thought PETA was the only one going hard for animals and shutting down you’re favorite celeb , think again. The group seems to have the support of hip hop, or at least, from one of its celebrated icons. According to New York Daily News , RZA from the Wu-Tang Clan  is backing the New York City Council speaker’s proposal to ban all fur sales in the city. RZA sent an email to the City Council members expressing his support through the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA, of course): “I am writing to ask that you support Speaker (Corey) Johnson’s bill to ban fur sales in New York City. I am Brooklyn-born but have had deep ties to all five boroughs since my earliest days with Wu-Tang Clan,” wrote RZA, whose real name is Robert Diggs. “Though it may be argued by some that fur used to show elite status in our community because of the inequality we face in society, those days are done.” He continued: “ Those who have expressed that animals must die by the dozens to demonstrate that we have ‘made it’ only show arrogance and represent regressive — not progressive—attitudes,” he said. Johnson’s bill would ban fur sales with the exception of used clothes and fur worn for religious purposes. His bill has caused outrage amongst some New York City residents, with some Black residents even arguing that flaunting fur is apart of the culture. Love & Hip Hop star and Nicki Minaj ex Safaree even made a scene outside of City Hall earlier this month, according to TMZ . Sporting a long fur coat, a neon hoodie and sweatpants, he yelled to the crowd of protestors and supporters of the ban alike: “Leave us alone! Stop picking on us. Our fur, our right! Our choice, our right!” Meanwhile, RZA is an avid vegan and he even has a vegan line of clothing. “I don’t need a dead animal or dead piece of flesh to go into my live body. There’s not nothing on this planet that doesn’t want to live,” he explained in a recent video for PETA. What do you think? Are you team RZA, or you rolling with Safaree???
