Fun., Black Keys, Wiz Khalifa Get MTV Movie Awards Sales Bump

Sales of the Black Keys’ singles were up by double-digits thanks to their Johnny Depp-assisted Movie Awards performances. By Gil Kaufman Fun. and Janelle Monae perform at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards Photo: It took an extra week, but the performers from this year’s MTV Movie Awards got a Billboard chart bump after participating in the Russell Brand-hosted big screen blow-out. Among the big winners were the Black Keys , Wiz Khalifa and Fun. , who all saw double-digit increases for sales of their albums and/or singles after their spots on the show. The Keys got the biggest lift, with an assist to Generation Award
 winner Johnny Depp
, who sat in on a pair of songs with the Akron, Ohio, blues duo. Thanks to their prominent spot on the show, sales of the band’s El Camino were up 18 percent last week to 10,000, according to the Hollywood Reporter . (The sales increases didn’t factor in until this week because the Movie Awards took place on Sunday, June 3 and the SoundScan reporting week ends at the close of business on Sunday.) The two songs they performed with Depp also saw some chart love, with “Gold on the Ceiling” up 30 percent and “Lonely Boy” taking a 19 percent hike up the charts. A spokesperson for the group’s label said that not only did the Depp cameo help lift sales of Camino , but the prominent spot on the show also created a “healthy” spike of the Key’s back catalog of singles and albums. Khalifa was no slouch, either, with his new single, “Work Hard, Play Hard,” selling 78,000 copies for a 37 percent increase over the previous week. It was a mix of news for fun., whose smash single, “We Are Young,” got the celebs in the crowd up on their feet singing and clapping along, even as sales dropped by 25 percent after a strong six-week run at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. Even as the single dropped, sales of the band’s album, Some Nights , picked up by 33 percent to 18,000. Martin Solveig At Movie Awards: What Did He Play?

We break down highlights from French DJ’s movie-themed set. By Ryan J. Downey Martin Solveig arrives at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images “The Hunger Games” was one of the big winners Sunday night (June 3) at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards , where the juggernaut collected several Golden Popcorns against a musical backdrop culled from some of the most iconic film scores of all time. That nostalgia-inducing soundscape came courtesy of DJ Martin Solveig, who remixed themes from classic movies ranging from “Star Wars” to “Pulp Fiction.” The Black Keys, Fun. and Wiz Khalifa all brought the house down as musical guests at the MTV Movie Awards, held at the Gibson Ampitheatre in Universal City, California. The French electronic-music DJ and producer entertained the audience throughout the show, which was broadcast to viewers live as the show went in and out of commercial breaks. Solveig carefully curated a delicious mixture of some of the most memorable melodies from the movies that have shaped generations of popular culture with their stories, performances, tone and dialog. His set was also as much about the present as the past, perfectly summarized by the mix of the Doors and screamo singer-turned-Grammy-winning dubstep standard-bearer Skrillex. Miss a few tunes? We’ve got you covered. Solveig’s selections on Sunday included “Hello” (Martin Solveig featuring Dragonette), Calvin Harris’ “Feel So Close,” Skrillex and the Doors “Breakin’ a Sweat,” Kavinsky + Lovefoxx’s “Nightcall” (from the movie “Drive”), “Ready 2 Go (Hardwell Remix),” “Misirlou”(made famous all over again in “Pulp Fiction”), Martin Solveig & Dragonette feat. Idoling!!!’s “Big in Japan (Ziggy Stardust Remix),” various mixes of “The Night Out” and some of Daft Punk’s work from “Tron: Legacy.” And these were the tracks spinning off from the most legendary themes: “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Theme (Martin Solveig Remix)” : Clint Eastwood’s “Man With No Name” spaghetti Western trilogy (which concluded with 1966’s “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”) is the stuff of legend, most recently memorialized in Johnny Depp’s animated “Rango.” For many years, Metallica has opened each and every concert with composer Ennio Morricone’s “Ecstasy of Gold” from “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” with the crowd often singing the lyric-less melody in unison as a series of “whoa-oahs.” If the 83-year-old Italian composer was watching the Movie Awards, he heard his composition mixed up for the modern electro age. “Jaws Theme (Martin Solveig Remix)” : Who hasn’t tried to play the “Jaws” theme on a piano at some point? It’s so simple yet so brilliant, like “Chopsticks” for people who want to remember how terrified they were to go into the water. The music from future “Star Wars” composer John Williams certainly helped Steven Spielberg kick off the modern blockbuster featuring the scariest fish since Moby Dick (OK, technically, neither were fish); they re-teamed on several other films. “Imperial March (Martin Solveig Remix)” : “The Imperial March” has been synonymous with ominous evil, impending doom, villainous tyranny and light sabers that only come in the color red since the original “Star Wars” movie kicked off an enduring worldwide phenomenon in 1977. It’s impossible to hear this theme without picturing Darth Vader boarding the starship transporting Princess Leia, holding that guy up in the air by the throat and demanding to know various things. So cool! “Superman Theme (Martin Solveig Remix)” : Hey, what do you know! Another John Williams score. And another grandiose theme that’s synonymous with the film. The music instantly conjures the image of the late, great Christopher Reeve soaring through the skies of Metropolis as Superman. Whether battling Kryptonian super villains, trading barbs with Lex Luthor or romancing Lois Lane (let’s not mention that Richard Pryor entry), Supes was defined by this killer theme. Johnny Depp Honored With MTV Generation Award At Movie Awards

Before accepting the award, Depp joined the Black Keys onstage to perform ‘Gold on the Ceiling.’ By Terri Schwartz Johnny Depp Photo: Getty Images UNIVERSAL CITY, California — Talk about a grand entrance. Aerosmith rock gods Steven Tyler and Joe Perry walked onto the MTV Movie Awards stage to congratulate a “truly revolutionary artist,” an actor who has become a rock star in his own right. Johnny Depp was the recipient of the MTV Generation Award , joining the prestigious ranks of Tom Cruise, Clint Eastwood and Godzilla. Depp joined the Black Keys on stage to perform a rousing rendition of “Gold on the Ceiling” before going on to accept his award. “I’ve got to thank MTV for this. This is quite an amazing honor, truly. It’s like the Get-Out-Of-The-Business Award, ‘All right, you’ve done too much.’ Clearly, based on the clips, there’s nothing wrong with me,” Depp said when he received his Golden Popcorn. “I just thank you very much. And it’s an honor to be presented by these two legends, Steve and Joe, and these up and coming legends, [The Black Keys], so thank you very much.” This has been a big year for Depp. “21 Jump Street” was nominated for six MTV Movie Awards, including one for Depp himself. In addition, he reunited on the big screen with Tim Burton to create their passion project, “Dark Shadows.” But the Generation Award is less about Depp’s last year and more about his legacy. From when we first saw him die brutally in “A Nightmare on Elm Street” to when he won us over as Captain Jack Sparrow in “Pirates of the Caribbean,” we’ve known he was a star worthy of our attention. Next year will be big for the three-time Golden Popcorn winner as well. We’re excited to see him transform onscreen yet again, but this time as sidekick Tonto in Gore Verbinski’s take on “The Lone Ranger.” And there’s always the planned fifth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie and inevitable reunion with Burton to look forward to in the future. What to Make of The Black Keys’ Harmony Korine-Directed ‘Gold on the Ceiling’…

I’d be lying if I said I truly understood the music video for The Black Keys’ “Gold on the Ceiling,” or that it didn’t just give me shades of the stomach-turning willies I’ve been getting from the words “face” and “eating” all week. So please, someone, watch the bizarre VHS-stylings of the latest Harmony Korine joint — an aesthetic cousin to his recent Trash Humpers , with a visual nod to the wheelchair banditry of Umshini Wam — and share in my amused discomfort. Because, yeah. Baby Twinz are my new nightmare. If I see anyone dressed like this on Halloween, I might instinctively punch them in the throat before fleeing in the other direction. You’ve been warned. [via The Playlist ]

Black Keys Reveal ‘Strange’ Story Behind New ‘Gold On The Ceiling’ Video

Keys premiere the wacky Harmony Korine-directed clip days before they take the stage at this Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards. By James Montgomery The Black Keys in their “Gold on the Ceiling” video Photo: Warner Music Back in February, when MTV News sat down with the Black Keys to premiere their “Gold on the Ceiling” video, they let it be known that they had just shot another clip — this one directed by oddball auteur Harmony Korine — though they weren’t really sure what it was for. “We did a video with Harmony, but it’s not really for ‘Gold on the Ceiling,’ ” frontman Dan Auerbach said. “Well, it is, sort of,” drummer Patrick Carney added. And though he couldn’t say when the clip would see the light of day, Auerbach went on to describe it thusly: “Pat and I are dressed up like babies, in onesies, and we’re in BabyBj

Mac Miller Helps Rookie MC Battle Cancer On The Mic

‘There’s a kid battling one of the toughest diseases in the world, yet he’s courageous enough to talk about it in his music,’ Miller tells MTV News of Yung Ka. By Rob Markman Mac Miller Photo: MTV News At the open of his 2010 track “The Spins,” Mac Miller urges kids to follow their dreams, but the Pittsburgh MC does more than just give sound advice. Recently the Blue Slide Park rapper and his producer E. Dan linked up with aspiring MC Bobby Stewart, a.k.a. Yung Ka, to show him the ropes around the studio. Stewart, who is suffering from a form of cancer called T-cell lymphoma, first met Miller at Mac’s December 2011 homecoming concert in Pittsburgh after the rapper presented the Make-A-Wish Foundation with a check for $50,000. “It’s cool what I did, but the story here is him; the story is that there’s a kid that’s battling one of the gruesomest, toughest diseases in the world, yet he’s courageous enough to talk about it in his music,” Mac told MTV News when we caught up with him at the Bamboozle Music Festival in New Jersey on May 18. “This is someone who really talks about his sh– in his music, like all the stages of cancer, to the point where it’s uncomfortable for some to listen to because it’s that much real, it’s too real, it’s that painful.” Miller served as a mentor for the 18-year-old rapper, but he didn’t want to muddle the moment by guest-rapping on Ka’s personal track. “I just wanted to do what I could do to mentor him and help him put a song together and give him what I know,” he said. “I didn’t want to step in on the song because to be real, he did a whole song about cancer, and then what am I gonna come in with on the third verse?” The song hasn’t been released yet, but last week Pittsburgh’s WTAE Action News paid a visit to ID Labs , the studio where Mac, E. Dan and Ka recorded the track, and caught up with the up-and-coming MC. “To be with Mac is a blessing,” Ka said. “His lyrics are amazing. Hip-hop is my passion. To be able to be with Mac Miller … he is a Pittsburgh legend. Wiz Khalifa shout-out.” What’s your favorite Mac Miller track? Tell us in the comments! Madonna And Lionel Richie To Reunite On Billboard Charts?

The singers are expected to return to the top five next week, the first time they’ve been chart mates in 26 years. By Gil Kaufman Madonna on cover of True Blue and Lionel Richie on cover of Dancing on the Ceiling Photo: Sire/ Motown America was still four years away from the first of three wars in the Middle East, Lady Gaga was a newborn, and the Internet was just a twinkle in the eye of some academic nerds’ coke-bottle glasses. That’s how long it’s been since Madonna and Lionel Richie were both in the top five of the Billboard 200 chart at the same time. The year was 1986, and Richie was riding high with his smash #1 album, Dancing on the Ceiling, while Madge was at #5 with her former #1, True Blue. Next week the pair will be chart mates again, as Madonna’s dance-tastic MDNA is predicted to sell between 300,000 and 350,000 copies to take the top spot, while Richie’s album of country re-workings of his biggest hits, Tuskegee, should land at #2 on sales of 125,000 to 150,000. Back in the day, both were celebrating the release of their third album. Madonna dedicated her “girliest” work to date to her then-husband, actor Sean Penn, even as she began delving into more topical songs (“Papa Don’t Preach”) and Latin rhythms (“La Isla Bonita”). For an artist who’d already ascended to pop stardom with her first two discs, True Blue was a chance for Madonna to expand her fanbase, and though it debuted at #28, it eventually reached #1, where it stayed for five weeks. Among the singles released from the album are “Live to Tell,” the title track and “Open Your Heart.” It went on to sell more than 25 million copies worldwide. For Richie, it was also a time of transition. The former Commodores singer — who was born in Tuskegee, Alabama — had scored some hits on his first two solo albums, including “My Love,” the Caribbean-spiced “All Night Long,” “Hello” and “Running With the Night.” While Madonna continues to be one of the biggest live draws in the world and a global superstar, Dancing on the Ceiling marked the beginning of the end of Richie’s mass popularity. But, the famously well-coiffed singer went out with a huge bang. Not only was the title cut a #1 single and hugely popular video, but the album also spawned the moving ballad “Say You, Say Me,” as well as “Love Will Conquer All” and “Ballerina Girl.” While Madonna continued to crank out hit albums such as Like a Prayer, Erotica and Bedtime Stories, it would be 10 years before Richie was back on the charts. His Louder Than Words came out in April 1996, debuting at #33 and not spawning any memorable hits. Against the usual pop music odds, Madonna is still launching singles onto the charts, recently played the most coveted gig in music — the Super Bowl halftime show — and has collaborated with modern stars like Nicki Minaj. Richie has been lower-profile, but served a well-received stint as a guest mentor on the second-biggest reality music competition on TV, “The Voice,” and he roped in such big-name country stars as Kenny Chesney, Shania Twain, Jason Aldean, Darius Rucker, Rascal Flatts, Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles, Blake Shelton, Willie Nelson and old pal Kenny Rogers. Black Keys Talk Arena Tour, El Camino Follow-Up

Band already having discussions about a new album — but need to find time to do it. By James Montgomery Black Keys Photo: MTV News Next month, the Black Keys will kick off their first-ever North American arena tour, an accomplishment the dynamic duo never thought possible 10 years ago, when they were mowing lawns (and working the buffet circuit ) in their hometown of Akron, Ohio. And, truth be told, they’re still trying to wrap their heads around playing such massive venues, though, thanks to the success of their Brothers and El Camino albums, they’re slowly beginning to realize that things have changed — for the best, of course. “Things are obviously different; we’re playing arenas everywhere, and it’s crazy,” frontman Dan Auerbach told MTV News. “I don’t know; it’s all very new for us. I think we’re still trying to get used to the idea of playing such big shows wherever we go.” “[When we first started], I’d never even been to a concert that was larger than maybe 2,000 people, so I never thought we’d be able to play places this big,” drummer Patrick Carney added. “I do know things have changed a little bit, because we’ve been touring for a very long time, and every single show, I sweat through an entire shirt and pair of pants, and after almost every show, I ask our tour manager if I could have some laundry done; and yesterday, my laundry was done for the first time.” Clean pants are very important. And while the Keys are still very firmly in the eye of the El Camino storm, they’ve already laid out a list of goals they’d like to accomplish in 2012 (“We just want to make it through without getting some pneumonia or something like that,” Auerbach joked), which, as they told MTV News following the premiere of their “Gold on the Ceiling” video, also includes plans for a new album — if they find the time, of course. “We actually just talked about it a couple days ago,[but] we can’t really [write on the road],” Auerbach said. “It’s kind of impossible, because we’re both so insecure that we don’t like messing up in front of people, and that’s all we do when we try to write songs, is mess up over and over again. [But] Maybe [by the] end of this year, who knows?” What are you expecting from the Keys’ next album? Let us know in the comments!
