Will Black Keys Team Up With Ke$ha? First They Want Jim Nabors

The duo sat down with MTV News in Berlin to discuss a pair of unlikely collaborations. By James Montgomery Black Keys Photo: MTV News Theirs is a relationship that has spanned time and Twitter, seafood and shaving , but over the years, the unlikely bond between the Black Keys and Ke$ha has grown to become something more : a genuine friendship, marked with the occasional trespassing charge. “We’re friends with her, we’ve known her since way before she was famous, before she was even a singer, I guess,” Keys drummer Patrick Carney told MTV News. “When she was 16 years old, she used to sneak into our shows. We kind of became friends with her by kicking her out of our backstage room, over and over again. She actually has snuck into shows in L.A., San Diego, Coachella …” “She snuck in and [got] kicked out of one show, like, five times,” frontman Dan Auerbach added. “[She] snuck in through the kitchen. I don’t know if she’s such a big fan; she just likes breaking the rules.” So, when MTV News sat down with the ‘Keys in Berlin during the premiere of their “Gold on the Ceiling” video, we had to ask if their friendship with Ke$ha would take the next step: an actual musical collaboration. It’s not all that far-fetched, considering both Ke$h and Auerbach live in Nashville (“I see her every once in a while flying by in her T-Top [convertible],” Auerbach laughed), and recently, the glittery one has logged studio time with the Flaming Lips . So, could we see a team-up on the next Black Keys album? “I guess, I don’t know,” Carney said. “We don’t really do that many collaborations, really.” OK, so if a Ke$ha collabo isn’t in the cards, just who would the ‘Keys like to work with next? Well, as it turns out, they’ve got their eyes set on landing a very big star for the next record … even if they mistakenly believe he’s deceased. “We both want to work with Jim Nabors very badly, but apparently he’s not with us anymore,” Carney said. Oh, but he is. Which means that, much like Nabors, the dream is alive. The Ke$ha collabo? Eh, probably not so much. Should the Black Keys hit the studio with Ke$ha? Leave your comment below! Black Keys’ ‘Gold On The Ceiling’ Video Keeps It Simple

‘Lonely Boy’ follow-up is light on bells and whistles, heavy on what made them the sensation they are today: killer live sets. By James Montgomery The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach in “Gold on the Ceiling” Photo: Warner Bros. There are no dancing actors/security guards , precocious street-fighting children or cameos by “Sir” Todd Bridges in the Black Keys’ new “Gold on the Ceiling” video . But don’t let their absences sway you — in a lot of ways, this was the video the Keys were born to make. The clip, which premiered Monday night (February 6) on MTV, features only the Black Keys (and various members of their road team) doing what they do best: playing live, in gloriously gritty fashion. It’s not only a nod to their roots — for close to a decade, they hammered out gigs (and miles) aboard a rusty van — but it’s a powerful reminder to their detractors that they are, first and foremost, a positively killer live act. Of course, it was also probably a matter of necessity. The Black Keys are rather busy these days, what with their smash album and world tour, so shooting a live video (in part during their MTV Hive-sponsored El Camino release party at New York’s Webster Hall) undoubtedly made their management happy, but you get the feeling that Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney probably delighted in making a concert clip. After all, it fits rather nicely with their anachronistic ways. Of all the monster rock acts currently lumbering, the Black Keys seem the most natural fit for a live video. No bells or whistles, no special effects, just a band, a stage and some grainy footage. It’s easy. So while “Gold” may be lacking in all those things (not to mention odd, inbox-baiting cameos), it is by no means a lesser video. If anything, it represents everything that makes the Black Keys the band they are — hard-charging, unpolished and seemingly not-of-this-era, indebted to their past yet still pushing forward and always determined to do things on their own terms. Big-selling album and high-profile second single be damned, the Black Keys just want to do it live and do it loud. It’s what got them here, after all. What did you think of the Keys’ latest video? Black Keys Talk Lana Del Rey’s Overnight Success

Duo also address their own critics tonight on MTV.com following the ‘Gold on the Ceiling’ video premiere at 7:54 p.m. on MTV. By James Montgomery The Black Keys Photo: MTV News On January 8, 2011 — nearly a decade after they first started kicking around in Akron, Ohio — the Black Keys made their first appearance on “Saturday Night Live.” Needless to say, it was a pretty big moment for Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney, who had spent no small portion of the past 10 years grinding out miles (and shows) in their van. On January 14, 2012 — nearly six months after she first became a much-debated blog curio — Lana Del Rey performed on the same “SNL” stage . It was a pretty big moment, too, though mostly for her critics and those who enjoy deriding the current state of popular music. After all, they argue, it’s debatable whether Del Rey has ever seen the inside of a van, let alone toured in one. So when MTV News sat down with the Black Keys in Berlin — for an exclusive interview you can watch tonight (February 6) on MTV.com, following the MTV premiere of the duo’s new “Gold on the Ceiling” video at 7:54 p.m. ET — we had to ask them for their thoughts on Del Rey’s overnight success, and what it meant for bands trying to make a living in 2012. “On some level, we’ve seen that Lana Del Rey thing since we first started, like, all of a sudden this new band would be headlining festivals, and we’re like, ‘Wait, how did they get that? We’ve been here for two, three, four, five years and we’re still working our way up,’ ” Auerbach said. “But then they’re gone. Just as quickly as they get up there, they disappear.” “It’s different for everybody. It took us a really long time to get on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ and it took her a shorter amount of time,” Carney added. “But I honestly feel bad for a lot of bands that are starting out with the way things are. … The trends kind of flip over so fast — something’s cool and not cool and it all happens within two to three months.” Of course, it bears mention that the same outlets that have criticized Del Rey for her perceived lack of authenticity and quick rise to a major-label deal are the very same outlets that have largely ignored (or largely ripped) the Black Keys, a band that has spent a decade making the slow climb to the top. And when it came to that point, well, the Keys didn’t exactly hide their displeasure. “Yeah, [it’s] ’cause they’re pricks,” Carney snorted. “It’s like, ‘What the f— are you talking about, motherf—er?’ ” And though you’ll hear more of their thoughts on the media during our full interview, you can reasonably assume that the Black Keys don’t take criticisms kindly. In fact, they’ve been taking mental notes, and someday they’ll even the score. Don’t miss the premiere of the Black Keys’ “Gold on the Ceiling” video tonight at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV, followed by an in-depth chat with the band on MTV.com. Will Madonna Duet With Cee Lo Green At Super Bowl?

Sources say Madge will be joined by ‘The Voice’ judge during halftime performance. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna Photo: Getty Images Madonna might already have M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj on the stage with her for her big Super Bowl halftime performance; now comes word that she could also be joined by Cee Lo Green. According to sources, the singer has asked “The Voice” judge to perform with her at the February 5 show. “The Insider” reports that he’s been flying to New York to rehearse with the pop icon. The sources add that he will contribute his signature flair to some of her classic tunes. The pairing would make sense given that the new season of “The Voice” premieres right after the Super Bowl next month. Reps for both performers did not respond to MTV News’ request for comment by press time. MTV News caught up with the Queen of Pop at her “W.E.” premiere earlier this week in New York, and the singer only had one tease about the Super Bowl gig . “I am not saying ‘Yes,’ and I am not saying ‘No,’ ” she replied when asked whether Minaj and M.I.A. would take the stage with her. She added, “Pom poms. That’s all I can tell you.” When the singer takes the halftime stage next month, her performance will be “imagined” by Cirque du Soleil and Madonna’s longtime choreographer and creative director Jamie King. According to reports, the set list for the show will include new single “Give Me All Your Luvin” as well as the Madonna classics “Ray of Light,” “Vogue” and “Music.” “I have eight minutes to set up my stage, 12 minutes to put on the greatest show on earth, and I have seven minutes to take it down so that football field is clean for the second half of the game,” she told ABC News about the performance. “That’s the challenge. How do you do that? I actually wanted to have 100 drummers come from the ceiling, a drum line from the ceiling.” In addition to her Super Bowl performance, Madonna’s fans are awaiting the release of her next studio album, M.D.N.A., out later this year. Madonna Teases ‘Pom Poms’ For Super Bowl, New Video

‘Give Me All Your Luvin’ collaborators Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. might join halftime show, Queen of Pop tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna Photo: MTV News Madonna is nearing both the release of her “Give Me All Your Luvin” music video, as well as her highly anticipated Super Bowl halftime performance. And it seems that these two milestones will have a few things in common. First off, there’s a good chance Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. will not only play parts in the video for the first single off Madge’s M.D.N.A. release, dropping later this year, but as heavily speculated, they might take the stage with the Queen of Pop during the February 5 halftime show. In true Madonna fashion, when MTV News caught up with her at the New York premiere of her film, “W.E.,” she played it cool regarding rumors about the performance. Asked whether the ladies will join her at the Super Bowl, she coyly responded, “I am not saying ‘Yes,’ and I am not saying ‘No.’ ” The only tease she wanted to give was, “Pom poms. That’s all I can tell you.” When Madonna takes the halftime stage next month, her performance will be “imagined” by Cirque du Soleil and Madonna’s longtime choreographer and creative director Jamie King. According to reports, the set list for the show will include “Luvin” as well as the Madonna classics “Ray of Light,” Vogue” and “Music.” Of course, fans won’t find the theme a far stretch for the Michigan native, who was a cheerleader back in her high school days. “I have eight minutes to set up my stage, 12 minutes to put on the greatest show on earth, and I have seven minutes to take it down so that football field is clean for the second half of the game,” she told ABC News about the performance. “That’s the challenge. How do you do that? I actually wanted to have 100 drummers come from the ceiling, a drumline from the ceiling.” So, what else will the Super Bowl show and her Megaforce-directed clip have in common? Madge simply told us, laughing, “Pom poms.” The video was shot in December with both Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. on set. The already buzzed-about shoot made headlines after Minaj tweeted that the icon had kissed her.

Black Keys To Return December 6 With El Camino

Follow-up to band’s breakout Brothers disc will be preceded by first single ‘Lonely Boy,’ due October 26. By James Montgomery The Black Keys’ El Camino Photo: Nonesuch Bob Odenkirk doesn’t mess around. One day after a viral video starring the “Mr. Show” and “Breaking Bad” comedian as a used-car salesman pitching a “used, fully loaded El Camino” hit the Net (which instructed interested folks to contact Dan or Pat, a.k.a. the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney) comes official word that the Keys’ brand-new album is, in fact, called El Camino, and it’s due December 6. That’s according to the band’s publicist, who said the follow-up to the duo’s breakout Brothers album is completed and will be in stores just in time for the holidays. It features 11 tracks, including first single “Lonely Boy,” which will be released October 26. Fans can pre-order El Camino beginning Tuesday (October 11) on the Black Keys’ website . Produced by Danger Mouse (who did the band’s 2008 album Attack & Release ) and recorded in Auerbach’s Easy Eye Studio in Nashville, Camino sees the band pushing their blues-and-garage-based sound even further, as Carney told MTV News backstage at the Video Music Awards in August. “He’s a really good friend of ours, and he’s super talented. It’s always … interesting,” Carney said of working with DM. “It’s comfortable, but at the same time difficult, because he does push us to do things we normally wouldn’t do. … I hope it sounds different enough that people see that we’re still evolving.” And, hey, like the Keys said late last month, it’s definitely hitting stores before Blakroc 2. The track list for El Camino, according to the Black Keys’ publicist:

Seems like Adam Lambert got a little too excited celebrating Lady Gaga’s birthday. According to popeater.com , Adam “showed up beyond drunk at Gaga’s surprise birthday party to celebrate her 25th birthday at Mexican restaurant La Cita Bar in Los Angeles. Lambert was not one of the invitees, but attended as a guest of a music group Scissor Sisters. Lambert was fist-pumping on the walls and even punched a hole in the low ceiling. Another eye witness tells US Weekly, “Adam acted like an animal. He kept jumping up on the tables and chairs and screaming. When they brought the cake out he tried to smear it in Gaga’s face and put a doll from the cake in her mouth!” SMH!!! Adam did try to apologize, sort of…he posted on his twitter page: “Was trying for celebratory gesture 4 gaga’s B- piñata style…instead my fist is all bruised and la cita has a hole in the ceiling. #sloppy” Oh you crazy kids!!!
