Source: Allen Berezovsky / Getty Producer Said French Montana Coopted His Beat For Rapper’s Hit Song An Illinois producer claims that French Montana straight up stole his beat and used it for the song “Ain’t Worried About Nothin’” when he was still a teenager. Eddie Lee Richardson aka “Hotwire The Producer,” sued French Montana for copyright infringement and more earlier this month, alleging the rapper used his work without permission or payment. Richardson said back in 2012 when he was just 16, he made a song called “Hood Pushin’ Weight,” and registered the song with the U.S. Copyright Office. He said he uploaded the song to site SoundClick, a music sharing website and distribution platform. The plaintiff said French then took the song from the site, and the following year, released “Ain’t Worried About Nothin.’” He said the songs were identical, save for the lyrics and vocals. The producer believes French banked more than $5 million from the song, and he wants money damages that equal the amount of profit grossed from the single. It’s not the first time that French Montana has been in hot water over accusations that he stole music. We exclusively revealed that another producer sued him for the very same thing. In 2017 Morocco-born producer Assil Youssef sued him for using his beat for “Lockjaw” (featuring Kodak Black) without his permission. That case was later dismissed.
Fans were aghast after rapper Kodak Black was a no-show to his own concert, canceling after they had waited for hours. Even his team was at a loss to explain it. But it turns out, however, that he had a very good excuse for ghosting them. Kodak couldn’t perform because he was too busy being arrested. Wednesday night, TMZ reported that Kodak Black had abruptly canceled a Boston concert at the last minute. After waiting for hours at the House of Blues only for Kodak the cancel and police to clear out the venue, fans were pissed. TMZ reached out to multiple members of Kodak’s team to find out what was up. Bizarrely, no one seemed to know why the gig was canceled, where Kodak was, or how to contact him or those traveling with him. He had just played another show on Saturday night. Within just a few days, he had ghosted his own people. Hours later, however, the mystery of Kodak’s absence had been solved. In the wee hours of Thursday morning, TMZ reported that Kodak had been arrested. The rapper was arrested at the U.S. border on weapons charges and on drug charges. Apparently, Kodak and three companions were stopped by a U.S. Customs Agent on Wednesday. Customs discovered the contraband and arrested him. The specific charges were criminal possession of a weapon — which is a felony — and misdemeanor possession of marijuana. Multiple sources spoke to TMZ about it and explained some of the context. For whatever reason, between Kodak’s Saturday show in Detroit and his Wednesday show in Boston, he’d gone silent … and to Canada. He was caught at the border on his way back the U.S. and allegedly had at least two guns in his possession. Yikes. He was held on a $20,000 cash bond or a $40,000 bond. At slightly more reasonable hours on Thursday morning, TMZ obtained further specifics. According to police, Kodak and two others attempted to reenter the United States at the Lewiston-Queenston International Bridge. They were traveling in a Cadillac Escalade and had only a temporary California registration. Apparently Kodak himself was driving (literally what’s the point of being a celebrity, then?). Officers allegedly discovered weed on him and decided to search the entire vehicle. During the search, they allegedly found a Glock 9mm pistol, though no one in the Escalade declared ownership of it. And then there was the car accompanying them — a Porsche with three occupants. The Porsche’s driver admitted to police that he was in possession of two loaded handguns. … And then a third was found in the vehicle’s trunk. You know what else was in the trunk? More marijuana. According to a law enforcement source, one of the guns had an odd and even alarming design. “AK-style handgun with a 30-round magazine,” the source describes. “It looks like an AK, but it’s a handgun.” Stetson President and Madarrow Smith were arrested for criminal possession of a weapon. The driver of the Porsche, named Jeantony Saintmelus, was arrested for both criminal possession of a weapon and for possession of marijuana. Kodak was too busy being arrested to attend his show in Boston. His tour bus did show up to that venue, however. It ended up being surrounded by a massive crowd of furious fans who protested his no-show status. Perhaps now they’ll understand that he intended to make it, but it apparently wasn’t as high a priority as doing crimes. View Slideshow: Happy 4/20 From Celebrities Who Smoke Weed Errrrrrrday
The strange saga of Gypsy Rose Blanchard has been back in the news in a big way lately. In 2015, Gypsy was arrested for the murder of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. Dee Dee suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, and during the first decades of Gypsy’s life, her mother subjected her to painful and unnecessary medical treatments. Dee Dee convinced the world that Gypsy suffered from leukemia, asthma, muscular dystrophy and brain damage so severe that as an adult, she had the mental capacity of a 7-year-old. Gypsy was not actually afflicted with any of these ailments, but at her mother’s insistence, she was confined to a wheelchair, fed through a feeding tube. and forbidden to leave the house without Dee Dee. When the abuse became too much for Gypsy to bear, she recruited her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, to murder Dee Dee. These days, Godejohn is serving a life sentence, and Gypsy is locked up until at least 2024. There’s been renewed interest in Gypsy’s case in recent months thanks to a number of film and television projects focusing on the case. Most recently, the HBO documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest , and the scripted Hulu series The Act made millions aware of Dee Dee’s murder and Gypsy’s abuse. Last week, the world learned that Gypsy had gotten engaged through a prison pen pal program. And now, the long-suffering 27-year-old is asking for the public’s support in getting out of prison so that she can truly begin her life. In a newly-released email sent to her father and addressed to her many supporters, Gypsy asked the public to contact Missouri governor Michael L. Parson on her behalf. “Hello friends and supporters,” she begins . “I appreciate the continued encouragement throughout my prison sentence. Many of y’all have signed the Free Gypsy Blanchard Petition created by my father, Rod Blanchard, Blanchard continues. “Now, I must ask a favor.” “I am respectfully asking all who wish me an early release to please aid my father in his efforts for my freedom, and write a letter expressing support for my early release to either the Missouri State Governor, Michael L. Parson, and/or the Division of the Missouri State Board of Probation and Parole,” she adds. “I am scheduled for a parole hearing in December of 2021. However, any and all letters of support are helpful. Please remember to add my first and last name and DOC# in the letter. Thank you,” If you wish to join the campaign to help free Gypsy Rose, you can reach out to probation.parole@doc.mo.gov using the subject line, “P&P Inquiry,” or write to Governor Michael L. Parson at P.O. Box 720, Jefferson City, MO 65102. Be sure to include Gypsy’s full name, as well as her inmate number, #1302048. No doubt this is a morally complex situation — but there’s certainly a case to be made that Gypsy has suffered enough. View Slideshow: 21 Stars Who Very Likely Killed Someone
At the end of March, beloved rapper Nipsey Hussle was shot dead , murdered by an acquaintance following a verbal disagreement. Nipsey's funeral included tributes from singers and politicians. He was mourned by thousands — he is mourned by thousands. Fox News villain Laura Ingraham decided to mock those mourners. To smear Nipsey for her viewers, she played a video of a different black man. “Yesterday in L.A.,” Laura Ingraham says in a now viral Fox News clip. “Thousands lined the streets to say goodbye to rapper Nipsey Hussle.” “Now this dear artist,” she says, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “Recently released a song called 'FDT.'” Ingraham then explains that the song's title stands for: “Eff Donald Trump” We don't say this often because it is rarely true, but Ingraham is right about the meaning of that title. She then immediately squanders that brief moment of not being wrong by playing a clip from the music video. As you will see when you watch the clip, the video focuses on an L.A. rapper by the name of YG. That's because it's his song, from his 2016 album, Still Brazy . Nipsey is featured in the song, but it's not his song and he didn't release it. It's also not “recent” in music terms. The song is three years old. Why did Laura Ingraham use her show and platform to play the wrong music video in an attempt to disparage Nipsey? Maybe she just wanted to address hot topics and give her core demographic — ageing white supremacists — a target for their ire. A rapper who doesn't like Trump would certainly make an inviting target. Fox News' whole brand is about distracting people from real stories by drumming up pointless outrage. And maybe Ingraham and her entire staff really didn't know YG from Nipsey. They look like different people to us. But maybe all “Trump critics” look the same to them. Ingraham's latest bad move comes on the heels of months of controversy, including her verbal attacks on children who survive school shootings. The accused white nationalist's remarks have been praised by members of the KKK. In the mean time, rappers and black celebrities have called for a boycott of Ingraham's show. The goal is to deprive her of the platform that she uses to sow misinformation and hatred. Absolutely anyone would mistake one face for another, especially if one spends all day staring at faces. One would hope that someone with the infinite resource of Fox News behind them would be able to do some basic fact-checking. Of course, that's doesn't seem to be a priority for them. The fact that Laura Ingraham continues to have a job shows that the network doesn't take her white nationalist rants seriously. Or worse — that they're pleased with her hateful words. We're sorry to say that mocking the lyrics of an associate of a dead black man is far from the worst thing that Ingraham has said. A man named Eric Holder was arrested for Nipsey's murder and for the shooting of the two men who were with Nipsey but survived. The 29-year-old was brought in following a manhunt and has entered a plea of Not Guilty. His defense attorney is Chris Darden — yes, the very same attorney who rose to fame as a prosecutor on the O.J. Simpson trial. If Holder is convicted, he may face life behind bars.
Source: Noel Vasquez / Getty The death of Nipsey Hussle has impacted many , even those that didn’t really know him at all. Case in point with Reggie Bush, the retired NFL athlete, felt the need to start a GoFundMe page to help the late rappers two children—but Nip’s business partner Karen Civil quickly shut that down. Bush announced he was starting the “Nipsey Legacy Fund” and kicked things off by pledging $10,000 hoping his followers and friends will help raise the other $90,000. While this was a noble act on his part, it would seem the former NFL running back did not have permission from Hussle’s family to start the GoFundMe page. On Saturday (Apr.13) Civil tweeted Bush asking him to remove the page telling the former New Orleans Saint that he was overstepping. She revealed that he did ask for permission, but the family said no, he went and did it anyway. Bush did remove the page but did not remove the Tweet from off his timeline sparking the business maven to tell him to take it down. “Please remove this tweet as this was privately asked of you already. The family nor Lauren requested this and you did it anyway” Bush replied back stating he only did it as an act of kindness. “Wait what??? Nah that’s actually INCORRECT check your facts what would I gain from this @ KarenCivil ?And this is the very last time I will speak on it out of RESPECT for everyone! God Bless you!” Civil retorted the kind gesture was appreciated but he should have also respected the family’s wishes. “I never spoke on what you had to gain, Simply asked you to remove the tweet, just like you did the gofundme. You asked prior to do this and was told no by family, but did it anyway. You never once spoke to Nip in the gym the many times you saw each other.” She continued, “I understand you’re motivated and want to help, but there are other ways. His family already asked you NOT to do this. People are literally grieving over a husband, father, brother, uncle, friend and someone who meant so much too so many people. This is not the time for this.” Bush did finally take down the Tweet, but he did point out he had someone’s permission to start the page. “My time is already busy as it is I would never even put forth the effort to take on a project like this unless I got someones blessing!!,” he said via Instagram. “Come on now! That just sound crazy! Please CHECK THE FACTS! And YES I didn’t know him that had zero to do with the cause? It was about doing something positive and giving back and paying homage to a man that stood for so much and was a leader in the community and over came the obstacles of the hood and made it big while never losing sight of where he came from! That is hard to do and a lot of young black kids never make it out of that!” Karen Civil was instrumental in putting together Hussle’s beautiful memorial service at the Staple’s Center. If anyone would know what the family of the late rapper wants it would be her. Still, RIP Nipsey. — Photo: Noel Vasquez / Getty
Source: Leon Bennett / Getty A week after she made headlines for supporting her 11-year-old stepson at the Miami Pride Parade, Gabrielle Union has spoken out about why she and her family showed Zion all that love. “It feels normal,” the Being Mary Jane actress told Us Weekly at the Black Design Collective Honors Costume Designer Ruth E. Carter event on Saturday. “My mom took me to my first pride at eight years old. We moved to San Francisco, and it’s kind of part of being a global citizen.” The 46-year-old added, “People talk a lot about diversity and inclusion, but they don’t actually mean it. In our household, we mean that, and that’s why the entire household went to pride.” As we previously reported , Zion and his stepmom were on a float during the April 7 LGBTQ pride festival. They were also joined by other family members such as his 17-year-old big brother, Zaire and baby sister Kaavia . See, a 2016 report released by the Center for American Progress found that Black LGBTQ folks experience higher rates of homelessness during youth than their peers; have higher rates of unemployment or underemployment; and face overall lower rates of pay and higher rates of poverty. Another report conducted by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network found that nearly half of Black/African-American LGBTQ students felt unsafe due to their sexual orientation; over a third felt unsafe because of their gender expression and nearly 40 percent of Black/ African-American students were more likely to experience in-school discipline. So, it’s clear that if this is the disproportionate bias our children face in the outside world, they need to be loved and accepted as much as possible when they are home with us. Nipsey Hussle was laid to rest in a public and emotional memorial on Thursday morining. Referred to as a Celebration of Life for the late rapper – who was shot to death outside his clothing store on March 31 – the event was held at Staples Center and, following a processional, Hussle was buired in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced on April 4 that Eric Ronald Holder Jr. was charged with fatally shooting Hussle and wounding two others in Los Angeles. Holder allegedly walked up to Hussle, shot him twice, realized he was still alive after Nipsey actually spoke to him … and then turned around, shot Hussle in the head and then ran away to a getaway vehicle. But this memorial was not about mourning Hussle. It was about honoring a life spent making music and inspiring others, as Hussle was dedicated to making the dangerous streets on which he was raised safe for current future generations at the time he was killed. Former President Barack Obama was not in attendance at the service, but he did pen a message to Hussle’s loved ones. It was read aloud and this is what it said: I’d never met Nipsey Hussle, but I’d heard some of his music through my daughters, and after his passing, I had the chance to learn more about his transformation and his community work. While most folks look at the Crenshaw neighborhood where he grew up and see only gangs, bullets, and despair, Nipsey saw potential. He saw hope. He saw a community that, even through its flaws, taught him to always keep going. His choice to invest in that community rather than ignore it — to build a skills training center and a coworking space in Crenshaw; to lift up the Eritrean-American community; to set an example for young people to follow — is a legacy worth of celebration. I hope his memory inspires more good work in Crenshaw and communities like it Michelle and I send our sympathies to Lauren, Emani, Kross, and the entire Asghedom family and to all those who loved Nipsey. Elsewhere, Stevie Wonder sang “Rocket Love” and “Tears in Heaven” — and also gave a speech about the importance of taking action to change the gun laws in America. “It is a heartbreak to again lose a member of our family. It’s a heartbreak because it’s so unnecessary,” the legendary artist said, adding: “We, to be a civilized nation, civilized world, we are still living in a time where ego, anger, jealousy, is controlling our lives. It is so painful to know that we don’t have enough people taking a position that say, ‘Listen, we must have stronger gun laws.’ It’s unacceptable.” Wonder concluded: “It’s almost like the world is becoming blind. I pray that we will grow. I pray that the leaders who have a responsibility to perpetuate life will do it by making sure that the laws will make it so very hard for people to have guns and to take their frustrations out to kill life… “I hope that it motivates us enough to say, ‘Enough of people being killed by guns and violence.’ “I hope that we don’t just talk about it but we be about it — make a difference for our future.” Finally, and perhaps most emotionally, Lauren London addressed attendees. The actress had been dating Hussle for five years at the time of his murder and has a two-year old child with the late Grammy nominee. “Never would I prepare for something like this so bear with me, all,” the 34-year-old actress told the crowd of 21,000 in the Staples Center. She continued through tears: “You’re still the coolest guy in the world to me. Still! I love you so much. Unconditionally. My truth is this. I’m never going to give up on you. My loyalty and devotion is to you.” London later shared a text message she wrote to Hussle after watching him sleep one morning and added: “I’ve never felt this type of pain before but I know that God is alive but bear with me all,” as she read another passage of words she had put together for the memorial… “His soul was majestic. He was the strongest man that I ever knew. A gentle father, a patient leader, a divine light. He was brilliant. He researched everything, completely self-taught, constantly seeking knowledge.” Speaking of their son Kross, London grew emotional at the thought of her toddler growing up without his father. “My pain is from a 2-year-old that probably won’t remember how much his dad loved him,” she said. “This is something that I don’t really understand but I know Ermias always used to say that you can’t possess people; that you experience them. I’m so honored and blessed to experience such a man.” London concluded her speech with one of Hussle’s most well-known phrases. “In Hussle words, because he always used to say this: The game is going to test you but never fold, stay 10 toes down. It’s not on you, it’s in you and what’s in you they can’t take away. He’s in all of us.” May he rest in peace. View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Died in 2019: In Memoriam
