New York Magazine Columnist: Jon Stewart ‘Invaluable’ as Media Critic; ‘Most Trusted Man in America’

Lauding Jon Stewart’s biting humor and criticism of today’s politicized media, NY Magazine columnist Chris Smith called him “Cronkite, the most trusted man in America” in his piece featured on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Friday. The show’s panel largely agreed with him and emphasized that Stewart is bi-partisan in his comedy. “The right provides better raw material, but Stewart’s complaints are bi-partisan,” Smith writes in his column ” America is a Joke .” On MSNBC, Smith described Stewart as a “comedy opportunist, you know, where people do mockable things – left, right, in-between.” The show’s co-host Joe Scarborough joined Smith in diffusing the myth that Stewart is a raging liberal. “Over the past year, he’s been every bit as tough on the Obama administration as Republicans on Capitol Hill,” he asserted.   The panel seemed to agree that Stewart is hilarious, but pressed about the anger that lies underneath his cynicism. Smith affirmed this. “Oh, no question, that’s what gives [his humor] weight and bite, and you know, he admits to being angry every day, and the show gives him the catharsis, you know, it gives him the chance to point things out. And it’s not just anger for the sake of anger.” Smith added that Stewart’s angry criticisms sometimes pass for reporting as well. “You know, he did something three, four weeks ago that maybe you guys covered – I certainly didn’t….But pointing out that Fox has been taking all these shots at the mosque, and who’s funding it – and then they go and do their homework to say well, NewsCorp’s second-largest investor is a Saudi prince. You know, that’s reporting as much as it is anger or humor.” A transcript of highlights from the segment, which aired on September 17, at 7:42 a.m. EDT, is as follows: CHRIS SMITH, columnist, New York magazine: Some things that have happened in the real world, many of them not funny, have given him openings. And the polarization of media – you know, cable channels, Fox obviously the biggest culprit, has given Stewart a middle to both poke fun at and sort of represent in some ways. (…) WILLIE GEIST: Is he driven by anger? Because when you read the things he says about the media, he holds the media in utter contempt, almost across the board. That includes the right and the left. SMITH: Yeah, uh, anger and a faint, naive hope for intelligence to rule the day – you know, he still thinks there’s some dream state, you know, of American political discourse where we can be nicer to each other and have genuine arguments, but have them be based on fact and not emotion. (…) JOE SCARBOROUGH: …over the past year, he’s been every bit as tough on the Obama administration as Republicans on Capitol Hill, and he also has been tough on extremists on the left as well as extremists on the right. Um, Have you – have you noted that in your piece? Have you talked about the fact that he goes after the left now as aggressively as the right in many cases? SMITH: Certainly, and it’s not out of any agenda, you know, big picture-attempt to be “fair and balanced,” to coin a phrase. But he is a comedy opportunist, you know, where people do mockable things, left, right, in-between. He’s going to go for the punchline. (…) SCARBOROUGH: And Mika, you’ve always talked about his brilliance….But John Stewart works hard, but the guy, as you always say, is brilliant. He’s one of the smartest guys on TV. (…) MIKA BRZEZINSKI: …I do think that there’s a tinge of anger in a lot of his humor. SMITH: Oh, no question, that’s what gives it weight and bite, and you know, he admits to being angry every day, and the show gives him the catharsis, you know, it gives him the chance to point things out. And it’s not just anger for the sake of anger. You know, he did something three, four weeks ago that maybe you guys covered – I certainly didn’t….But pointing out that Fox has been taking all these shots at the mosque, and who’s funding it. And then they go and do their homework to say well, NewsCorp’s second-largest investor is a Saudi prince, you know, that’s reporting as much as it is anger or humor.

Sasha Grey in Some Men’s Magazine of the Day

This men’s magazine that is slowly going broke because the owner and founder is out of touch and 90 just had Sasha Grey do a pictorial for their latest issue…and I’m all for getting bitches naked and in pictures…it’s actually one of my dream jobs along with breaking the world record of most blowjobs with the most women in a given year record…but I do have a problem when the person they get naked is a fucking pornstar…and not just any pornstar…a broken home pornstar who tricked all these insecure rockers and celebrities that she’s an artist and her throat fucking porn is some statement on our society…which in and of itself annoys me because porn is porn…getting fucked on camera is getting fucked on camera and getting face fucked while a huge black dick rips your asshole open….just stems from other deeper, darker issues….the whole being goth and ironic isn’t cute or even interesting to me…so I pretty much hate this bitch….but for some reason…people are responding to her…she is getting TV roles, movie roles, and is all hype…cuz she’s really just a gutter pornstar and that’s what needs to be remembered…. There was a time this men’s magazine got girls we wanted to see naked, not girls we could google to see getting three dicks inside her at the same time… Either way, here’s Sasha Grey and her hipster bush she’s bringing back in style, cuz it conveniently covers up her cunt scabs, but more importantly, fits her artistic, ironic, bullshit strategy, when really she’s just another Belladonna or gutter pornstar who just packaged herself proper…. Boring.

Hollywood Feminism: Women Smart, Men Dumb

“Feminism is a Crock – and Other True Stories.” That’s the title for a book I’d like to write someday. The reason I say feminism is a crock is because it has morphed from “equal rights for all” to “women are better than men, and if you disagree you’re a sexist pig who should be castrated.” It’s also morphed into a sexual free-for-all: what used to be sauce for the gander (and those ganders were usually considered cads) is now sauce for the goose. This image is being perpetuated by pop culture and entertainment, and women are more and more frequently being portrayed as strong through their sexuality, not through their actual accomplishments. Is this the standard to which we want our daughters to aspire? Early feminists fought against the centuries-old image of a “woman on a pedestal.” Gloria Steinem (she of the “a woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle” who in later years ended up getting married anyway) once said, “A pedestal is as much a prison as any small, confined space.” I suppose a bra is also a small, confined space, which might explain the bra burnings of the 1960s. But the early feminists had a point – to a point. If a woman wants to be put on a pedestal and admired and adored, fine. But if she doesn’t, she should have the right to do with her life as she chooses. She should be free to pursue any vocation  for which she is qualified,  either as a single or married woman, children or no children. But one of the problems with the new feminism was the annoying little fact that children could get in the way of this brave new world. Having to either stay at home with the little tykes or find daycare for them – not to mention all of the discomfort and disfiguration that comes with pregnancy itself – sure put a damper on Gloria Steinem’s idea of a “liberated woman” being “one who has sex before marriage and a job after.” Unbridled sex does, after all, have consequences. And so,  according to historian Elaine Tyler May, birth control was “an important tool to gain control over their lives.” May touts the contributions of Margaret Sanger, whose group eventually became known as Planned Parenthood, conveniently ignoring – as many do –  Sanger’s devotion to eugenics . Sanger spoke of sterilizing those “unfit” to contribute to the gene pool, a group which included not only blacks and other ethnic minorities but, according to  Sanger associate Dr. Harry Laughlin, the “shiftless, ignorant, and worthless class of antisocial whites of the South.” What a classy group of people. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not against safe, legitimate birth control methods. But when tooting the horn of the likes of Margaret Sanger, we need to be honest about what really drove her pursuit of birth control for women, just as we should be honest about what drives the abortion mills of Planned Parenthood –  profit . And quelle surprise – Planned Parenthood as we know it really  came into its own in the 1960s . In a nutshell: True feminists of the time felt that you could only be a feminist if you rebelled against the natural workings of your body and eschewed marriage and motherhood  for a “higher cause.” There are still many of the old guard around today. But the times, they are a changin’. Fast forward to 2010. Many would say the fight for equal rights has pretty much been won. Girls can dream of going to college and becoming airline pilots, electrical and biological engineers, teachers, doctors – the list is almost endless. In fact,  more women graduate with college degrees than men  – perhaps  due in part  to more focus being put on girls than boys in school to “make up for” previous inequality and also what is being called the feminization of society (what Rush Limbaugh calls “chickification”). And for years, the entertainment industry has done its part for the last 20 or 30 years by portraying men as bumbling but lovable fools who wouldn’t be where they are if it weren’t for the very attractive, smart-as-a-whip women they somehow managed to marry. Television’s  Home Improvement  and King of Queens  are two of the more recent examples. And, of course,  commercials like this one . So even if the woman did commit the sin of marrying, she always had the redeeming quality of having the upper hand in just about any situation. Earlier, I said that unbridled sex without birth control or easy access to abortion has the consequence of pregnancy and childbirth. Today, unbridled sex with birth control and easy access to abortion combined with an increasingly “anything goes” attitude in society and pop culture gets girls who have as their role models the like of Paris Hilton, the Kardashian sisters, Snooki from MTV’s  Jersey Shore  and various other “celebrities.” Their claim to fame is not similar to being the  first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean  or  receiving the Nobel Prize for pioneering work in radiation , but for on-camera antics like tanning, catfights, and puking after binge drinking, and having their “sex tapes” released to the press for quick and easy profit. Too many are the next target of the creator of the  Girls Gone Wild  video series, which shows images of drunken girls taking off their tops and making out with one another. We also have the likes of Lady Gaga, who makes Madonna look like a choir girl – almost. And those who begin their careers as wholesome young things (Britney and Jamie Lynn Spears, Christina Aguilera, Lindsey Lohan, Miley Cyrus) often decide that “growing up” must mean “giving out” – figuratively speaking in some cases, not so figuratively in others. As the mother of two girls, one just starting college this year and the other starting high school, I find these so-called role models severely lacking. Writing for  Macleans , Anne Kingston also notes this disturbing trend. As those she interviews see it, the fight for women’s equality is not over but has taken a giant step backward because of something called “enlightened sexism”: where women are not only “empowered” by overtly flaunting their sexuality, but are also obsessed with getting married. Certainly this new trend in the entertainment media, which exploits this so-called sexual empowerment for fun and profit, is partially to blame. But what about the parents? Where are they? Sure there are the mothers quoted in Anne Kingston’s article who are upset about this trashy turn of events. Unfortunately, there are plenty of others who are pushing the trend. I was in TJ Maxx some time ago and heard two women talking, excited because the store was finally carrying the tacky  Juicy Couture  clothing line. Yet I had to wonder – were they excited because they could buy it for their children or were they excited for themselves? Just a couple of weeks ago, I saw an older, heavyset woman at the mall who was with a boy who looked like he might be her grandson. She was wearing a tight t-shirt with the word Juicy across the front and it was painfully obvious that she wasn’t wearing a bra. Nothing like mutton dressed like lamb a la  Absolutely Fabulous . Blech. Then there’s the  recent story  about skinny jeans for toddlers. Why anyone would put their two- or three-year-old in an item of clothing usually connected with sexuality is beyond me. But then we have shows like TLC’s  Toddlers & Tiaras , where some think ” beauty pageant stage parents make Jon and Kate Gosselin look like Ward and June Cleaver .” There are notorious stage parents like Dina Lohan, who has  done her best  to  launch her own career  on the back of her daughter, nearly sucking her dry. Double blech. My take? The left tried its hand at social engineering in the name of equality – but rather than focusing on equal rights in education and the workplace,  ended up giving women the same “rights” as men in the arena of sex with no consequences. Religion and morality were for squares, no matter what  Huey Lewis might have said . Yet it has backfired. Girls still like to look pretty and still like to attract boys. However, now they don’t have to worry about public stigma for public misbehavior. A girl who would once be labeled a skank for certain behavior is now celebrated.  Be famous for being a no-talent party girl with an expanding rap sheet ! No need to ” settle with a man just to have that child .” Go back to the creep who  used your face for a punching bag . Turn yourself into a  literal caricature through plastic surgery . You deserve it. You’ve come a long way, baby . Here’s hoping you can find your way home again. Crossposted at Big Hollywood

Ryan Gosling Cops to ‘Phony’ Tough-Guy Accent

Have you ever wondered why Ryan Gosling — a Canadian with extensive child actor and Mouseketeer experience — somehow talks in real life like he is a surly, New York teamster? “As a kid I decided that a Canadian accent doesn’t sound tough,” he admits to W . “I thought guys should sound like Marlon Brando. So now I have a phony accent that I can’t shake, so it’s not phony anymore. I’m going for the Madonna thing, the Lady Gaga thing — a phony accent that becomes your trademark.” [ W ]

Rihanna, Cher, Katy Perry, More Stars Tweet About VMAs

Diddy promises to set the ‘stage on fire’ as a performer next year. By Josh Wigler Rihanna performs at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Although the curtains have closed on the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , the show goes on in the form of Twitter reactions from the various celebrities in attendance Sunday night. From the show’s various performers to mere spectators out in the crowd, just about everybody has had something to say about this year’s event. The first big surprise of the show occurred when Rihanna unexpectedly arrived to sing “Love the Way You Lie” opposite Eminem. The R&B artist wasn’t expected to appear at the VMAs, but Rihanna stormed the stage nonetheless, later explaining to her fans on Twitter : “SURPRISE!!! Just had to do it guys.” Rihanna’s performance alongside Slim Shady was considered one of the highlights of the night, especially for Paramore vocalist Hayley Williams. “The best thing was seeing Eminem live,” she wrote , “and being only a few feet away from Gaga.” Indeed, it was hard not to notice Lady G, what with her eight VMA victories and her now-infamous meat dress . Legendary singer and actress Cher got an up-close glimpse at Gaga’s controversial wardrobe, describing it as “interesting” and “amazing.” “The way it was cut and fitted to her body was amazing! The meat purse was genius,” she assessed . “As [an] art piece, it was astonishing!” The show moved along at a brisk pace, thanks to the hilarious work of host Chelsea Handler, though there was at least one attendee pining for last year’s host, Russell Brand. “California Gurls” singer Katy Perry, who began her relationship with Brand at the VMAs in 2009, offered a tribute to her fianc

3 Important Features That Went Missing From This Year’s VMAs

Though it earned MTV its best ratings since 2002, the main problem with the Video Music Awards last night wasn’t Chelsea Handler’s emcee skills — which combined enough off-color commentary and speedy segues to satisfy any VMA historian — or even the slim selection of on-hand celebrities. No, the VMA s came up short because it refused to be anything but a staid awards show stocked with musical performances and statue handouts, and that’s exactly what the VMA s is supposed to be an antidote against . Here are three mainstays from previous ceremonies that were missing from the VMA s this year:

Chelsea Handler Opens VMAs With Lindsay Lohan Skit

‘Don’t embarrass me,’ Lohan warns host in pre-taped segment. By Kelley L. Carter Lindsay Lohan and Chelsea Handler onscreen at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: WireImage As expected, MTV Video Music Awards host Chelsea Handler opened with a bang. In a pre-taped clip, the comedienne makes her way to the stage (and gets slapped on the butt a couple of times along the way). She meets up with troubled actress Lindsay Lohan, who pokes fun at her own struggles with sobriety before giving Handler a bit of advice: “Don’t embarrass me.” It went over pretty well, as did Handler’s monologue. She dropped down to the stage Lady Gaga-style, wearing a house on her head and a glittery outfit. She punched a clicker and the garage went up, then she dipped her head out and joked, “Sorry. That’s as far as we got in rehearsal.” Her outerwear was removed, revealing a short black dress. She told the crowd, “My plan was to stay sober the entire show, but, in an interesting twist, I am as high as a kite. That’s the last time I do a prayer circle with Snoop Dogg.” Handler talked about the last time a woman — Roseanne Barr — hosted the VMAs, which was in 1994. “Justin Timberlake was in the Mickey Mouse Club pretending he wasn’t having sex with Britney Spears. The Situation was just a classy way to call teenage pregnancy. And Justin Bieber’s mom had just given birth to her 401k plan.” Handler also had a bit of advice for her audience of celebrities: Be bad. “I want to encourage everyone to be on their worst behavior. And I’m not just talking about some predictable awards show girl-on-girl kiss. We’ve all seen that. I’m over that,” she said. “I want to turn this mother out. Get your tongue ready. I want one shoved some places it’s not supposed to be. I’m talking about you, Taylor Swift.” She also chided multiple VMA winner Gaga a couple of times, talking about her fashion choices in music videos. “I’m taking this job very, very seriously tonight. I did my homework and I watched all the videos. The one thing I discovered is that Lady Gaga and Beyonc

Ultimate Locavorism: Ten US States Constitutionally Protect The Right To Hunt & Fish

How else could you explain 10 US states amending their constitutions to protect hunting and fishing? There is no National Fishing Rod Association, after all.
