Swizz Beatz Recalls Sneaking Into Clubs To DJ, On ‘When I Was 17’

‘I started off DJing for the high school prom, then I started DJing the college parties, then I started DJing the clubs,’ he says. By MTV News staff Swizz Beatz’s yearbook photo Long before he started producing tracks for Jay-Z, Chris Brown and Drake — and before he whisked Alicia Keys away to get married on the Mediterranean — Swizz Beatz was just a skinny kid trying to make a name for himself. And he couldn’t make a name for himself fast enough, which is why he started working the club scene long before he was old enough to order a drink from the bar.

James Van Der Beek Recalls His Car’s ‘Slow Death’ On ‘When I Was 17’

‘The car was basically a prophylactic on wheels,’ he laughs on this week’s episode. By Jocelyn Vena James Van Der Beek Photo: MTV News Getting a car when you’re a teenager is a pretty common rite of passage. And when James Van Der Beek was 17, his car certainly had him standing out from the crowd — thanks to its very poor condition. “With the money I had made doing theater, I purchased, for $800, a 1986, candy-apple-red Hyundai Excel,” the former “Dawson’s Creek” star recalls on this week’s episode of “When I Was 17,” which also features “Jersey Shore” star Snooki and N.E.R.D. frontman Pharrell Williams. Van Der Beek added that the car had “lots of miles on it.” In the beat-up car, Van Der Beek definitely wasn’t earning any points with the ladies. “The car was basically a prophylactic on wheels,” he laughed. “We called it the stud mobile, because to ever get any action in that car, you had to have game like nobody’s business.” While the car had quite a few flaws, one of its negatives turned into a positive. “It had its own anti-theft device, which was that in order to start it, you had to pump the gas vigorously and do that at least three times,” he explained. “When I would turn corners, I would put my foot on the clutch, and if I didn’t rev the gas … it would stall.” Eventually, Van Der Beek had to say goodbye to his beloved Excel. “The car died a slow death,” he said. “And then, at one point, it got loud [and died].” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Van Der Beek, Snooki and Pharrell Williams — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. Double Negative Exposure: Bravo Show Calls Out Lindsay Lohan

Bravo’s new show Double Exposure , which takes you behind the lens of celebrity photographers Markus Klinko and Indrani, aired its second episode last night. The subject of the episode: Lindsay Lohan, and how the irresponsible train wreck almost sabotaged a photo shoot for her own line of leggings. Now she’s pissed! Centered around the troubled youngster bailing on a New York photo shoot that went down back in September, the episode is titled, “Is Lindsay Here Yet?” It’s a valid question. Sources close to the production say Lindsay was 11 hours late for the shoot, scheduled for 10 a.m. Her excuse? “She woke up late.” At 9 p.m.!? It’s worth noting that when the actress did eventually show up, a source reports, “she was fantastic to work with … it’s the ‘getting there’ that’s another story.” She also hit it off with the star of the show, even sparking rumors that Lindsay Lohan and Indrani (above) were dating. So it must have gone alright in the end. Nevertheless, Lindsay is obviously pissed about the way the episode is being promoted, taking to her Twitter page to claim that everything is “UNTRUE.” Right . “Sucks when ‘friends’ use you (in this case for ratings) even if they’re lyin,” she wrote. “I don’t appreciate being used for press, I’m sure others would agree!” In typical fashion, she blamed others and offered a really bad excuse , Tweeting: “I was given the wrong call time – now I know on purpose… it was a set-up.” Isn’t it always for Lindsay Lohan? Sucks when everyone sets you up, 24/7/365. Here’s hoping she shows up to her upcoming nude hangbag shoot !

Heidi Montag Breaks Up With Jen Bunney

Spencer Pratt isn’t the only person in Heidi Montag’s life she wants to ditch. According to reports, she’s cut off ties with her old friend Jennifer Bunney too. Heidi and the Bunney, who she had been planning to do a reality show with for like a week, were inseparable after she announced plans to divorce Spencer . They drifted apart soon after, though. Ever since Jen Bunney spoke to the press about Speidi, it’s been difficult to stay friends with the two, sources say. “Heidi is trying to distance herself from Jen … not even returning her calls. Ever since Jen has returned from Hong Kong, she’s been calling Heidi non-stop asking about this summer’s show. Heidi is definitely over her,” a source told X17 . Gabe Saporta Recalls Patriotic Make-Out Session On ‘When I Was 17’

Cobra Starship frontman recounts a fateful class trip to Washington, D.C., on the latest episode. By James Montgomery Gabe Saporta Photo: MTV News This might not exactly come as a surprise, but when he was 17, Cobra Starship frontman Gabe Saporta was a bit of a hell-raiser. Seems that the manic mastermind behind hits like “Good Girls Gone Bad” was never far away from trouble as a teen, much to the chagrin of pretty much every authority figure around him. “When I was 17, I was pretty much just as obnoxious as I am now, but louder,” Saporta laughed. “I went against the grain a little bit, and you always get in trouble when you do that. … Teachers hated me.” As a straight-edge kid at a Hebrew school (“We had, like, 11 periods a day,” he sighed), Saporta didn’t have to work very hard to stand out from the pack. It just seemed to come naturally to him, particularly on one fateful class trip to Washington, D.C., which he recounted on the latest episode of MTV’s “When I Was 17,” also featuring Evan Lysacek and Kimberly Caldwell. “We went on a class trip to Washington, D.C., to learn about the history of our government … and everyone had a hotel room, two people per room, two boys, two girls in each room,” Saporta smiled. “But really, class trips are just make-out sessions, so I went and snuck into one of these girls’ rooms … only this girl that I was making out with, her roommate who she was paired up with came back and freaked out and, like, had a panic attack.” The spooked roommate grabbed a chaperone, and before he knew it, Saporta was busted. He got sent home from the trip, and even though he felt the wrath of his folks when he arrived home, he still thinks the stunt was worth it — after all, it only added to his legend. “I got in trouble the next day, and I got sent home from the Washington trip,” he said. “I got kicked off the trip, I got to make out with a girl, and everyone’s like, ‘Wow, you were making out with a girl and you got kicked off the trip! That rules!’ ” The latest episode of “When I Was 17” — featuring Saporta, Evan Lysacek and Kimberly Caldwell — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. Kris Allen Recalls Dumping His Now-Wife On ‘When I Was 17’

‘She was awesome, but I was a jerk,’ he says on the show, which airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. By Eric Ditzian Kris Allen Photo: MTV News Listen up, all you heartbroken souls! Just because you broke up with your boyfriend or girlfriend doesn’t mean you won’t someday get back together. And get married. And see your spouse go on to win “American Idol.” That’s the takeaway from Kris Allen’s romance with his high school sweetheart, as the singer explains in the upcoming episode of “When I Was 17,” airing Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. “When I was 17, I broke up with my future wife,” he admitted. Arkansas native Allen and future wife Katie had been dating for about a year when their final year of high school rolled around and Kris decided he needed space to rock out like a true senior. “She was awesome, but I was a jerk. I was like, ‘Aw, it’s my senior year. I’ve got to be free like a bird. Can’t have this ball and chain on me,’ ” he explained. He probably should’ve realized it before, but Allen was not exactly the type of guy who could move on from one girl and embrace countless others. “I had no game with the ladies, but with her, it was really easy to go up and talk to her, and everything just always clicked,” he said. “Everyone was like, ‘Oh, they’re going to end up together forever.’ ” Nonetheless, they split, first for a two-week break and then for what both thought would be a permanent separation. “She had a hard time dealing with it,” Allen said. “Actually, our lockers were right next to each other, so that was pretty tough.” But eventually they got back together and ended up getting hitched shortly before Allen debuted on the eighth season of “American Idol,” which he went on to win. But the guy still feels bad about how he treated his sweetheart back in the day. “I was more worried about my senior year and having fun than being a boyfriend,” he said. “I’m sorry, Katie. I was being a jerk!” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Allen, Kourtney Kardashian and Travie McCoy — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. Bret Michaels, Kevin Jonas, Katharine McPhee Open Up On ‘When I Was 17’

‘Here’s the good thing about sucking when you first start to lose your virginity: You can only get better,’ Michaels shares. By MTV News staff Kevin Jonas in “When I Was 17” Another episode of MTV’s “When I Was 17” is behind us, and, well, we learned some things we just can’t unlearn. We now know the gnarly details of how Bret Michaels lost his virginity , the embarrassing ritual to which Kevin Jonas submitted his hair and the finer points of Katharine McPhee’s efforts to stage a secretive sleepover with her high school boyfriend. Don’t say we never did nothing for you, OK? Surely your weekend is better for having Michaels walk you through his inaugural sex romp! “I was the ultimate rocker-slash-jock. I was the rock jock,” he explained. “I lost my virginity around 17. It involved a motorcycle, a blanket — I’m going to admit it — it was an 8-track pop-tape player at the Mechanicsburg Fish Hatchery.” We’ll go ahead and give the Poison frontman the benefit of the doubt that a fish hatchery was a dope place to take a girl back in ’80s-era rural Pennsylvania. Michaels may have known the perfect spot to bring the lucky lady, but he had no clue what to do once he got there. “She was a little older than I was and much more experienced,” he said. “She showed me things I never knew. I could safely say I was not skilled yet. I made a two-pump chump look good. So it wasn’t my finest moment. But here’s the good thing about sucking when you first start to lose your virginity: You can only get better.” Better is exactly what’s happened to Jonas’ hair since he was 17. To control what his friends called simply a terrible ‘fro, the musician took extreme measures. “I flat-ironed my hair every single day, and it was a nightmare,” he laughed. “It was pointy and spiky and flat. It was a typical Jersey thing, I guess, but a little bit more than the typical tape-up.” The things a high school kid will do to stay cool. Just ask “American Idol” runner-up Katharine McPhee, who admitted that she used to be “known as the serial dater.” “My boyfriend at the time, Kevin, we planned this sleepover at this other friend’s house whose parents were out of town,” she explained. “I told my dad, ‘I’m going to sleep at Michelle’s house.’ There were a bunch of girls there and guys there. It was really fun. We all went to sleep, and it was, like, 3 in the morning. The house phone kept ringing, and I was like, ‘Kevin!’ I woke him up, I was like, ‘Something’s wrong. The phone keeps ringing.’ He finally picks up the phone, and it’s my dad. I just heard this deep, serious voice on the other line. I’m like, ‘Holy sh–.’ I thought in that moment I was going to die.” McPhee added: “I was grounded for two weeks.” Don’t miss “When I Was 17,” airing Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV.
