Police set up blockades on the streets surrounding New Hope Baptist Church , keeping the public several blocks away from the private funeral in every direction. On the corner of Orange and Nesbitt streets, a group of fans gathered to sing some of Houston’s biggest hits like “The Greatest Love of All” and “I Will Always Love You” . On Sussex Avenue, about four blocks from the church, another group of fans gathered. A Philadelphia artist who goes by the name Mark G. drew a portrait of Houston, which he had fans sign. By the time MTV News interviewed him he had gathered hundreds of loving notes and signatures, and the artist said he plans to give the portrait to Whitney’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina, as a present through a connection he said he has with the family. “Whitney was connected to the fans, and when she left, she shined her light and this is something creatively that I did that connects the people to Whitney,” Mark G. explained of the artwork he created in ballpoint pen. “My heart goes out to the Whitney Houston family,” Miami native Karin Collins said. “I feel so bad, I was crying all last night. I’m blasting her music in my car everyday and I just feel so bad and my heart goes out to Bobbi Kristina as well as her grandmother [Cissy Houston].” While fans were mostly upbeat and positive, some Newark residents were upset by the decision to keep the service private without holding a bigger public send-off at the much larger Prudential Center, as was first rumored. “It was sad that they didn’t have it in the Prudential Center, I don’t know why they didn’t do that,” Brian Collins said. “All the fans in Newark could’ve came out and just gave their all in all out to her, pay tribute to Whitney Houston. She meant a lot to us, she never forgot where she came from and I love you Whitney.” With things as they were logistically, fans might have been more comfortable watching the invite-only funeral from home anyway. But the crowds that assembled at each police check-point wanted to feel closer to the ceremony. On Norfolk Street off Central Avenue, about 75 people surrounded a CNN transmission truck and watched as R. Kelly sang a spirited rendition of “I Look to You,” a song that he penned for Houston in 2009. After the funeral an excited group waited on Central Avenue hoping to see some of the ceremony’s high-profile guests as they filed out. There were no sightings of Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys , Kevin Costner or any other celebrity from the fans’ vantage point, but when Whitney Houston’s golden hearse turned onto Central, fans gave the musical icon one last cheer. We’re not kidding. This report may be false, but according to Us Weekly , Chris Brown used that vile line on a girl he was attempting to pick up recently. The alleged quote: “”Can I get your number? I promise I won’t beat you!” Brown’s rep said: “I’d be surprised if Chris said something that stupid.” We would have to agree. If he did say that, it would defy comprehension … even more than things Chris normally does like tell haters to f–k off on Twitter. Brown, who pleaded guilty in 2009 to felony assault for hitting then-girlfriend Rihanna, reportedly used the line on an attractive brunette on February 10. The setting was the Lasio Professional Hair Care suite Grammy gift lounge. After he supposedly said it, a witness says, “He and his friends laughed about it, then one yelled, ‘That’s his new line!’ Ugh! I wanted to throw up!” It’s unclear if the brunette accepted Chris’ request. We honestly don’t believe this. Chris has big-time rage issues, and could do a lot better at taking responsibility, showing remorse and simply shutting up . He seems to fly off the handle only when provoked, however, and such a brazen remark seems a tad uncharacteristic, even if Chris is far from perfect. We can see him fuming at “haters,” which is what seems to set him off every now and then, but not joking about beating girls to their faces. Come on, Us . Chris has work to do, but spreading rumors like this is just as bad as his recent tirade. Legitimate criticism is one thing; slander another.
Monica Lewinsky has tried to keep a low profile after her role in President Bill Clinton’s impeachment scandal, but she’s become a trending topic of discussion again. All thanks to PBS’ two-part, four-hour documentary, titled Clinton . The documentary, which premieres Monday as part of PBS’ “American Experience” series, sheds new light on Clinton’s Oval Office affair with his then-23-year-old intern through interviews with some of Clinton’s closest advisers. Some of whom had never spoken publicly about the affair until now. Among the former White House staffers appearing on film are Secretary of Labor Robert Reich and Clinton’s former reelection campaign manager, Dick Morris. In the film, Morris reveals, “When the Lewinsky scandal broke the President paged me and I returned the call. And he said to me, ‘Ever since I got here to the White House I’ve had to shut my body down, sexually I mean.” “But I screwed up with this girl. I didn’t do what they said I did, but I may have done so much that I can’t prove my innocence.'” Though she plays a huge role in the story of Bill Clinton’s presidency, Monica Lewinsky herself was not interviewed for the movie. Producer Barak Goodman said that, “We felt it would tilt [the documentary] toward sensationalism.” After the scandal, Lewinsky went through a period of alternately embracing and avoiding her celebrity, but in recent years has been off the media grid. In 2005, she left the U.S. and moved to London, attending the London School of Economics and graduating with a masters in social psychology in 2006. While she has given interviews on the subject, most notably in an HBO special titled “Monica in Black and White,” she has kept an extremely low profile. Clinton is the latest in a series of in-depth documentaries PBS has produced over the years focusing on the often tumultuous careers of U.S. presidents.
