Light Bulbs To Get Nutrition-Style Labels Next Year

Image via FTC Late last year we reported that the US Federal Trade Commission proposed a new label for compact fluorescent lightbulbs that would show vital statistics like mercury content and the light output in terms of lumens rather than watts, which would make the brightness of CFLs, LEDs and other lighting technology more comparable among consumers. Well word has just hit that the new system has been approved and we’ll soon see … Read the full story on TreeHugger

What Deep Water Drilling and Nuclear Power Have in Common

Photo via Seeker 401 Put simply, the capacity for something to go very, very wrong as a result of technical mismanagement (or otherwise). Now, there are surely a great number of things that could also fit the bill, but I highlight these for a reason: In the wake of the BP spill, there are numerous calls for ramping up clean energy — and for many, that means nuclear. You’re likely going to hear a lot of appeals for expanding nuclear power as a reaction to the BP spill, as a cleaner power source that doesn’t have to be perilously extracted from miles under th… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Deadly Bat Disease Set to Go Global

Image credit: U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service – Northeast Region /Flickr No one likes to have their sleep disturbed but for hibernating bats it can actually be deadly. Geomyces destructans is caused by a white fungus that irritates infected bats’ skin, rousing them from their slumber and causing them to expend precious reserves of energy—often leading to starvation. Since first being discovered in Northern New York, the syndrome has spread west. Now, an outbreak in caves in Oklahoma have experts worried it is poised to spread across the hemis… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Restaurant Offers Lion Burgers. They’re Grrrrross!

Britney Spears Has Powerful Nipples

Here are some shocking pictures of Britney Spears exposing her nipples in a parking lot through her tank top the other day. Alright, these are just an everyday occurrence with the pop princess, but I needed to punch it up a bit because we see her wonky nipples so often that we’ve just gotten used to it. They’re losing their appeal. She looks like she’s wearing a bra too, those things must pretty damn powerful, I bet they beat up other celebrity nipples at parties. more pictures of Britney Spears here

Jake Pavelka is a Prude, Vienna Girardi is a Cheater: Breakup of the Century Getting Uglier By the Day

The Bachelor stars Vienna Girardi and Jake Pavelka ended their engagement this week, and the reason(s) behind the split continue to produce amazing gossip. Not shockingly, the Breakup of the Century dominates the celebrity news tabloid circuit this week, with both sides’ accusations garnering provocative headlines. In an interview with Star , Vienna says she was “bawling the entire time” when she penned her breakup letter to Jake, and reveals her motivation for leaving: He wouldn’t put out. During their first month together, they couldn’t keep their hands off each other, Vienna Girardi claims. But soon enough, they developed major intimacy issues. “We haven’t been intimate in months,” she says. “More than four months. At first his excuse was that he was fasting. The second excuse? He didn’t feel like it.” Jake Pavelka is a monster, supposedly. A prude monster. “The third excuse was that he felt that I wouldn’t understand that he wants to wait until marriage, even though I told him I’d support him,” continued the sad Vienna. “The last excuse was that we fight so much I push him away. I was like, really? Which is it? I have been living six months with a guy who won’t be intimate with me!” In public, however, it was a different story . “He kisses me only if we’re on a red carpet or if cameras are there,” she says. “Besides that, I have to ask for a kiss, and if I do he’ll pucker his lips and just peck me.” “I’m like, that’s how I kiss my grandmother!” The funny thing is that we always pegged Jake for this type of guy. He tells a very different version of events to Us , however, which you can read after the jump … According to that celebrity gossip magazine, there was growing tension between Jake Pavelka and his fiancee long before they announced their split Monday night. That’s no surprise, but what did shock Jake was that Vienna was telling people she was single while he taping Drop Dead Diva , then dumped his ass on the phone. There are also allegations of her cheating with Gregory Michael of Greek fame, whom Girardi “made out with” last weekend and partied with hours after the split. “She made it very clear they were not together,” says a source of the former Hooters waitress, who now boasts two broken engagements and a failed marriage. Cheating was the final straw for Jake. It often works that way. “He has no tolerance for infidelity,” a source tells Us Weekly of Jake Pavelka . “At first he gave her the benefit of the doubt, but soon realized the rumors were true.” “He realized he couldn’t be blinded by love anymore.” Of course, “there were other things” wrong in their seven-month relationship, adds the Jake insider: “She was jealous of him and did not support his career.” His career being a professional reality TV star who jumped headlong into Dancing with the Stars the very night The Bachelor season finale aired. The nerve. “The cheating was just the final straw. Things had been troubled for awhile.” We have little doubt about that statement … like from the moment they met. I’m totally on …

Good-bye, Polar Bears, Hello, Oil-drenched Pelicans: How the Gulf Spill is Changing the Environmental Movement

illustrations from New York Magazine Climate change was always a tough sell. But as an important article by Jason Zengerie in New York Magazine points out, it mostly seems to happen in another place, and another time. He quotes a pollster: “People overwhelmingly say melting ice is a very bad thing. The problem is that hardly any Americans live next to a melting glacier.” As can be seen by Brian’s post yesterday on the consensus among scientists on climate change , nothing will convince the sc… Read the full story on TreeHugger
