Glow-in-the-Dark Invertabrates Off the California Coast (Video)

Image via KQED Jellyfish are weird, cool, and scary all at once. But what might be even more weird, cool, and…well not all that scary? Siphonophores, jellies’ glow-in-the-dark cousins, are being studied more as researchers look to uncover the mystery of how and why they use light and iridescence as part of their survival strategy. Dozens of species exist off the California coast and scientists at Monterey Bay Aquarium are hard at work figuring out what makes them tick, and even how they can be used for medicine for humans. Check out a fascinating short video a… Read the full story on TreeHugger

The Carbonwood Bicycle. Art or Design?

All photos: Craig Wall for Craig Galego Design is about compromise. Art doesn’t know the word. Design needs to respond to vagaries of a mass market. Art is more unfettered — the idea comes first, the audience later. Design acknowledges the dictates of function (even it doesn’t always abide by them). Art bows down only to the altar of form. But as with life, there are rarely black and white absolutes, and sometimes art and design collide. When they do, it is often art that often comes out the stronger of the two. Take, for example, Australian designer Gary Galego’s Carbonwood bike. It is a stunning piece of art. A material co… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Clerkenwell Design Week Offers a Taste of the New

All Images by B. Alter: The Cloud Project Clerkenwell is an edgy part of London’s east end where many of the design showrooms, architects and design professionals hang their hats. For three short days they held a mini-festival: opening their doors to the public and strutting their stuff. The festival programme included seminars, workshops and debates along with music, street entertainment and some product launches from big design brands. Here’s a little taste of what is new on the design scene…… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Jason Wahler: Celebrity Rehab Bound?

Finally, a reality show that will still take Jason Wahler. Hey, he’s a reality TV star and needs to be in rehab. It’s a good fit. The rumor is that Celebrity Rehab and its venerable host Dr. Drew will welcome Wahler. Why? Back in the day, he got arrested four times in four different states for four drinking-related offenses in under a year. That’s up there with DMX and Pete Doherty! Then this year, he had a career resurgence, notching a pair in as many nations! Yep, he was nailed for DUI in L.A. soon after getting sprung from a Mexican jail . Yeah … rehab might be a good idea for the man. Jason Wahler mug shots: Two of the many. Jason Wahler hasn’t signed a deal yet, but his people (who apparently exist) are working on it behind the scenes, and we doubt he’d pass up a chance to be on TV. No word if this means he will no longer do prison time , or if the rehab stint would be in addition to a jail sentence he is likely looking at for violating his probation. We just hope they sign Stephanie Pratt and/or Kristin Cavallari to join him on the program. The Hills has some good candidates. Even Heidi Montag for that matter. Can you go to rehab for plastic surgery addiction?

Touring Renault’s Flagship Green Car Factory

Image by B. Alter Renault’s factory, Maubeuge Construction Automobile , is its flagship, state of the art environmental workplace. Located in Maubeuge, northern France, since 1978, all the Kangoo vans are made there, as will the new electric Kangoo Be Bop Z.E. in 2011. The factory is usually not open to the public for obvious reasons of confidentiality, but a group of green bloggers and journalists were invited to learn about and see for themselves the many and all encompassing environmental measures that have been introduced. How Biomimicry Inspired Creating A Ship from 12,000 Plastic Bottles (Videos)

Photos via The Plastiki Text written by Michael Pawlyn, Director, Exploration Architecture. I met David de Rothschild at the Google Zeitgeist conference in 2007 where we both spoke during the session about Green Technology. He explained his idea of the Plastiki Expedition and I was immediately captivated. It had exactly the right combination of elements to appeal to my interests: eccentricity, high idealism and a clear determination to bring about positive change. I had not previously heard about the Pacific garbage patches and I was struck by … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Sustainable Eating Brings More Pleasure

Image credit: The Kitchn Now that’s what I’m talking about! Only yesterday I was musing over how sustainability has to be more interesting than business as usual if we are going to get out of the mess we have created. So I was delighted to discover an article over at The Guardian about why saving the… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Colombia to Elect World’s First Green Party President

Photo via Colombia Reports Many nations have Green Parties, but many voters from those nations couldn’t even name a Green Party leader if you asked them to. Quick, who was the United States’ Green Party presidential candidate in 2008? Even if you said Ralph Nader, you’d be wrong — he ran for president as an independent. The Green candidate would be Cynthia McKinney, a congresswoman from Georgia. Point is, many Green Parties don’t tend to get a lot of love, even as the green movement continues to grow. Which is why it’s a pleasant surprise that Colombia is about to elect the world’s first p… Read the full story on TreeHugger
