Taylor Swift Named Most Charitable Celebrity of 2012

One of the best-selling artists of the past year, Taylor Swift didn’t waste all her money on Match.com profiles. Far from it, in fact. The 23-year old star was named by DoSomething.org as the top ” celeb gone good ” in 2012, donating more money to charity than any other famous person out there. T. Swizzle leaped from #20 in 2011 to #1 this year mostly due to her $4 million donation to the Country Hall of Fame museum. She was even recognized by the Robert F. Kennedy Center for her charitable efforts. Rounding out the organization’s top five best givers were: Miley Cyrus (who specializes in animal rescue causes, along with the Make-A-Wish Foundation); Channing Tatum; Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber . Kim Kardashian failed to make the Top 20. But she did use Facebook a lot!

WATCH: ’10 Years’ Director Jamie Linden On ‘Embracing The Chaos’ Of Channing Tatum & Co.

How do you wrangle a movie set packed with Channing Tatum and dozens of his actor friends playing high school classmates catching up, knocking a few back, reuniting with lost loves, reliving teenage hell, and experiencing the awesome-to-mortifying highlights of any class reunion? You “embrace the chaos,” says 10 Years director Jamie Linden ( Dear John ). “There were 15 28-year-old actors running rampant,” he explains in Movieline’s exclusive clip from the 10 Years DVD/Blu-ray, in stores today. “There wasn’t much of a way to keep control.” But Linden put the chaos to good use, filtering that ensemble energy into the film, which plays out over the course of one night as Jake (Tatum) comes face to face with the one that got away while his old classmates (Chris Pratt, Justin Long, Kate Mara, Oscar Isaac, Scott Porter, Brian Geraghty, Anthony Mackie, Max Minghella, Aaron Yoo, Lynn Collins, Ari Graynor) deal with their own drama. If you missed the indie pic in theaters, now’s a good time to catch up. WATCH: Bruce Willis Adds Gravitas (And A Little ‘Die Hard’ Confusion) To ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ International Trailer

There’s a lot to look at in this international trailer for   G.I. Joe: Retaliation :  Explosions. The muscled forms of Channing Tatum and Dwayne Johnson . More explosions. Masked men engaging in ninja sword fights while suspended from a snowy mountain. Avalanche!  Jonathan Pryce appearing to reprise his role as the Bond villain in Tomorrow Never Dies. Bruce Willis making cracks about his cholesterol after a near-death experience. Wait! What?  Isn’t that what John McClane does in the Die Hard movies — like A Good Day to Die Hard ,  which hits movie theaters a month and a half before the G.I. Joe sequel? Okay, so no one plays a smirking, self-deprecating hard-ass better than Willis. Which is why you should learn how to tell them apart:  In A Good Day to Die Hard , he’s John.  In G.I. Joe Retaliation , he’s Joe.  Simpler movie, simpler name. Got it?  Good. Now, watch some explosions. Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

‘Cloud Atlas’ Pays Sneaky Homage To Elvis Costello

Someone involved in the making of Cloud Atlas  is a fan of Elvis Costello. In the story thread where publisher Timothy Cavendish (Jim Broadbent) and a group of like-minded seniors plot their escape from the old-folks home where they’ve been imprisoned, the woman of the group, actress Amanda Walker, introduces herself in one scene as “Veronica Costello.”  That alone might not be enough to make a case for Elvis worship, but soon after the introduction the group of conspirators make a toast to “Trust.”  If you’re a Costello fan (like me), you know that “Veronica,” from the 1989  album Spike is a song that Elvis wrote — with a little help from his friend Paul McCartney — about his grandmother, who suffered from Alzheimers Disease. (It also happens to be his highest charting single in the U.S.) Although Veronica Costello in Cloud Atlas seems pretty lucid, but the music video for “Veronica,” which I’ve posted below, was also set in a nursing home, where the white-haired woman of the title is reminiscing about her life. I can’t find any evidence of who portrayed the elder Veronica in the Costello video, but I spoke to a representative from the London-based talent agency that represents Walker, Michelle Braidman Associates, and she assured me that the actress does not appear in “Veronica.”  (Although Walker does bear a slight resemblance to the other Veronica, she’s clearly younger.) As for Trust , it’s the name of Costello’s fifth album, which he released in 1981. It’s also one of his best, although it’s several shades more cynical than the righteous heart of Tom Tykwer and the Wachowskis’   Cloud Atlas . Then again, aren’t cynics simply frustrated romantics? Everything is connected. Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.
