Jennifer Lawrence Says Shooting ‘Catching Fire’ Will Be ‘A Blessing’

‘I got to play this character that I love, and then whatever I didn’t like, I can fix next year,’ ‘Hunger Games’ star tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jennifer Lawrence Photo: MTV News “The Hunger Games.” has yet to hit theaters, but preparations for the next flick in the series, “Catching Fire,” are already in the works. Still, the franchise’s leading lady, Jennifer Lawrence, is just trying to catch her breath for the first film, out March 23, before she can catch fire. “It’s kind of like when we’re there, let’s talk about it. But until then I’m sick of hearing about myself as Katniss,” she laughed to MTV News when asked how she feels about having to hit the set for the next film. “And also we’ve been focusing on getting this one out so much that we haven’t really had time to talk about the second one. I’m sure they’ve had time.” “Catching Fire” picks up where the first novel/movie leaves off. (Warning: Minor spoilers ahead!) With the latest round of the Hunger Games over and Katniss and her pal, Peeta, standing victorious, there’s rebellion under way against the Capitol. But that’s not the only upheaval. There’s a special edition of the Hunger Games announced that will up the stakes once again for the two friends and everyone they know. “I think one and three are my favorites [in the franchise],” she said of her favorite novels in the Suzanne Collins-penned trilogy. “But ‘Catching Fire,’ I’m looking forward to shooting ’cause it kind of becomes more of a war movie.” While some actors might not be ready to commit to a multiple film franchise, the Oscar nominee saw it as a chance to create the Katniss character in a fully realized way. “That was definitely something to take into consideration. But then I was like, I’m an actor so I would be doing a film, at least a movie a year anyway,” she explained. “And then the opportunity to play a character that you love and something you’re really passionate about, that happens rarely, if at all, in somebody’s life. So now it’s a blessing ’cause I got to play this character that I love this year and then whatever I didn’t like, I can fix next year.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . ‘Walking Dead’ Death Was Necessary, Producer Says

‘The Shane element was just not part of Rick’s continuing story,’ show runner Glen Mazzara tells MTV News about Jon Bernthal’s offing. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Kara Warner Jon Bernthal as Shane Walsh in “The Walking Dead” Photo: Gene Page / AMC Warning: Major spoilers for the latest episode of “The Walking Dead” lurk ahead! The inevitable has finally happened: Shane Walsh is dead. Double-dead, in fact. In the latest episode of “The Walking Dead,” titled “Better Angels,” Jon Bernthal’s disgruntled ex-cop finally met his demise at the hands of old friend-turned-new foe Rick Grimes. After luring Rick out into a field in search of missing prisoner Randall — whom Shane had already killed — Shane turned his gun on Rick, ready to kill his former partner and inherit his “broken wife” and “weak boy” as his own family. Rick ultimately talked Shane down, but what looked to be a peace offering was a trick of its own: Grimes plunged a knife through Shane’s heart, killing him in seconds … … and seconds later, Shane was back on his feet, a bloodthirsty zombie looking to finish the job. Thankfully for Rick, his son Carl arrived in the nick of time, gun in hand, to put a bullet through the undead Shane’s brain. Shane’s death was always a foregone conclusion in the minds of fans. Rampant rumors of Bernthal’s “Walking Dead” exit aside, the character’s demise occurs in the sixth issue of Robert Kirkman’s comic book series, making his eventual death a virtual certainty from the time Bernthal’s casting was announced. But speaking with MTV News, “Walking Dead” show runner Glen Mazzara revealed that Shane’s death wasn’t always part of the plan. “At one point, we considered not killing Shane,” Mazzara told MTV News. “But what’s important about this season is, Rick has to step forward. He has to assume leadership of the group and he has to confront Shane.” With that in mind, there was only one way for the Rick/Shane confrontation to end. Though Shane is killed by young Carl in the comics, it was important to the “Walking Dead” writers that Rick be the one to pull the trigger — or bury the knife, as the case may be — on the show. “Rick has to be the one to kill Shane. He needs to take control of the group,” Mazzara said. “That’s a huge loss for him, personally, for the group, but that’s what’s important about that: that it’s at Rick’s hand. We had considered doing it with a gun, but the knife was as personal as possible.” Many onlookers agree that Bernthal’s work as Shane has been the highlight of “Walking Dead” season two, so losing the character and the actor — especially so soon after Jeffrey DeMunn’s departure — is certainly a blow for the show. But for the writers, season two has largely been about transforming Rick from reluctant leader to confident decision-maker. In Mazzara’s opinion, the successful metamorphosis was made possible by Shane’s death. “It’s about Rick’s leadership, and if you see Rick [currently], when he steps forward and he discusses things with the group, you know that that’s a very different Rick than the one that came in at the beginning of the season,” the show runner said. “That’s what this season was about. It was about Rick, and the Shane element was just not part of Rick’s continuing story. It was a problem that Rick had to deal with.” Will you miss Shane on “The Walking Dead,” or do you think he needed to die? Tell us in the comments section!

Rachel Crow Wants Eminem On Her Nickelodeon Show

‘X Factor’ alum tells MTV News her Nick pilot will be ‘really Rachel.’ By Christina Garibaldi Rachel Crow Photo: MTV News Rachel Crow, the pint-size cutie who won over America on “The X Factor” and made a lasting impression with her heartbreaking elimination , may have come out of the singing competition a winner after all. Just last month, Crow not only landed a recording contract with Columbia Records, but also signed an overall talent deal with Nickelodeon to star in her own musical-comedy pilot. MTV News caught up with Crow on the set of the Nick series “Fred: The Show,” where she will be a series regular as the character Starr. “My head was exploding when I couldn’t tell anyone,” Crow said about her new projects. “I kept telling people, ‘Oh, stuff will be coming out soon,’ and then it kept getting pushed back, pushed back, and I was like, ‘People are gonna think I’m lying!’ But I’m so happy I can tell everyone about it now. I’m really excited.” Crow, who finished in fifth place on “X Factor,” has not yet started filming her own series but promises it will be a true representation of her personality. “I’ve been thinking about it. We’re kind of in the first stages of deciding what it’s gonna be now,” Crow said. “But it’ll be really fun, really Rachel. We’ll see how it goes. I’m still thinking about it, something really fun and something that kids can relate to.” In addition to staying true to herself, she’s also hoping to reach an audience that may not be too familiar with her: the boys. “I want to reach the boy audience, because I know that’s really hard to do,” Crow admitted. “Boys don’t usually watch a really girly show, but I want to make sure that it’s a family-oriented, very fun, edgy, wacky show.” And to get that edgy twist she is looking for, she already has some dream guest stars in mind. “I’ve always wanted to sing with Eminem . I know, it’s really weird. I really love him,” Crow said. “I would really love for [‘Fred: The Show’ star] Lucas [Cruikshank] to be on my show, a lot of the Nickelodeon stars. I’m still super excited, I can’t even believe what’s happening.” Are you excited for Rachel Crow’s Nickelodeon show? Let us know in the comments! Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Rachel Crow

‘Justified’ Villain Backs The Winning Side

‘He’s a bit of a wiseass, and he thinks he’s above them all,’ Neal McDonough tells MTV News about playing the bleach-blond big bad on the show. By Josh Wigler Neal McDonough on “Justified” Photo: FX ” Justified ” lawman Raylan Givens has faced no shortage of memorable nemeses in his days as a Lexington, Kentucky-based U.S. marshal: hoodlums with “four kidneys,” an “apple pie”-brewing and weed-slinging mama crime boss, not to mention the born again and born again and born again Boyd Crowder. But Robert Quarles? In a sea of backwoods Kentucky killers and thieves, this bleach-blond mobster may very well take the cake. Television veteran and “Captain America” actor Neal McDonough has graced the FX drama “Justified” with his formidable presence for the show’s currently airing third season, and viewers are better off for it — even if deputy Givens, the modern-day cowboy played by lead actor and producer Timothy Olyphant , is ruing the day that McDonough’s Quarles first set foot in Harlan County. “It’s like two great chess players in the same room,” McDonough told MTV News about this season’s ongoing battle between Quarles and Givens. “We both learn about each other. We’ve done our background checks on each other. So we both know we’re worthy opponents — but when we get in front of each other, it’s pretty awesome, because we’re on the opposite sides of the spectrum, but there’s a respect level for what each of us does. We’re both really good at what we do. But there’s also that ultimate disrespect from both of us: ‘Don’t think you’re going to beat me. I’ll let you dance with me for a while, but I’m going to crush you.’ ” Quarles has already dished out some crushing blows. In just eight episodes, the Detroit mobster has dropped by Raylan’s home unannounced, executed the deputy’s ex-wife’s ex-husband (it’s complicated), framed Raylan for the murder and set him up as a dirty cop. None of that mentions Quarles’ other atrocities, such as fatally shooting a businessman and his secretary mainly to prove a point, as well as brutally torturing a prisoner while simultaneously fielding a phone call from his very young son. What kind of monster can commit such crimes, you ask? According to McDonough, a very funny one. “He has a bit of a sense of humor,” said McDonough, who has played other villains with significantly fewer wisecracks to their names, including those in “Walking Tall” and “Street Fighter.” “This one, Quarles, his tongue is firmly in cheek in a lot of scenes. He’s a bit of a wiseass, and he thinks he’s above them all. To play that, and then have him unravel, trying to keep that veneer up, is what makes it really fun for me to play.” Indeed, the walls are closing in on Quarles. Raylan Givens is not his only obstacle: Quarles is now completely cut off from the Detroit crime syndicate he once worked for, and is starting to abuse the illicit pain pills he’s been pushing in Harlan County. “He’s a lot like me in a lot of ways: a businessman, but family first,” McDonough said of his character. “But Quarles gets addicted not just to the rush of power, but worse, to OxyContin. We all know how bad that gets when you’re hooked on junk like that.” Just how bad will Quarles’ addiction get? The actor teased, “The only thing I’ve asked of [‘Justified’ executive producer and show-runner] Graham Yost is that by episode 10 or 11, I’d like to be naked and hopped up on my own stuff. He goes, ‘Already thought of that, trust me!’ ” “Justified” marks the third collaboration between McDonough and Yost, having previously worked together on “Boomtown” and “Band of Brothers.” In fact, Quarles was written specifically with McDonough in mind, said the actor, who added that he would happily work with Yost on any project, anytime, anywhere. “If Graham Yost called me and said, ‘I have a three-minute infomercial to shoot in Bulgaria, are you in?’ I’d say, ‘Yes, what time is the flight?’ ” he said. “Graham tells me what to do and I do it. He gives me the juiciest stuff I can imagine as an actor.” The juicy stuff isn’t always cruel and unusual, either. McDonough teased an upcoming scene that shows a “beautifully altruistic” side of Quarles that he described as one of his top moments of the season. “There’s one scene in particular where a young boy comes into my trailer threatening to kill me,” said McDonough. “How I disarm him, not just physically but emotionally … it was maybe my favorite scene of the year. It’s just simple, emotional, truthful acting. Graham lobbed it in the air for me and I hit it out of the ballyard for him.” In short, to say that Quarles is an astounding addition to the “Justified” rogues’ gallery would be a tremendous understatement — and given where the character is headed in the back half of season three, it appears that we haven’t seen anything yet. “The first half of the season was great,” McDonough said. “But the second half … the second half is money. It’s fantastic for me as an actor.” Freshly renewed for a fourth season, “Justified” airs on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on FX.

Alex O’Loughlin to Enter Rehab, Take Absence from Hawaii Five-0

Hawaii Five-0 will be without its leading man for the foreseeable future. A rep for Alex O’Loughlin confirms that the actor will take an absence from the hit CBS drama “to receive supervised treatment for prescription pain medication due to a recent shoulder injury.” It’s unknown for how long the star will be gone. The series has shot 19 episodes so far and plans to complete its season two order, with or without O’Loughlin. It’s too early to know how it might write out his character, Detective Steve McGarrett, if it comes to that. “We respect and support Alex’s decision,” CBS Studios, which produces the drama, said in a statement. “Everyone at CBS TV Studios and Hawaii Five-0 wishes him well and we look forward to his return.”

Woody Harrelson Avoids Being ‘Phony Drunk’ In ‘Hunger Games’

But he also didn’t want to actually drink during filming — like he had done before — to play Haymitch. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Woody Harrelson Photo: MTV News Anyone familiar with “The Hunger Games” books knows the character Haymitch Abernathy is mostly memorable for one thing: drunkenness. Sure, his character has a more multifaceted arc over the course of Suzanne Collins’ trilogy, but in speaking of the first book and film adaptation, Haymitch’s most recognizable trait is his near-constant intoxication. When MTV News caught up with Woody Harrelson recently, the man who will be bringing the District 12 victor and mentor to life via the big-screen adaptation on March 23, we him how he approached his character’s inebriation. “It’s an intriguing thing for me to play, because it’s not something I’ve had that much opportunity to play,” Harrelson said. “I was a little bit worried about looking phony, that phony drunk thing. Some Method actors might go drunk onscreen; I can’t do that. I tried it one time,” he admitted. “When I was doing ‘Indecent Proposal,’ I had this one scene, and I was supposed to be really drunk, contesting Robert Redford’s love for Demi Moore, and I got smashed because I was supposed to be, so I rationalized it, and that wasn’t a pleasant experience.” Harrelson said he and “Games” director Gary Ross spent time coming up with the right level of inebriation, a point that suited the character but did not completely detract or distract from the story. “There was a thing with me and Gary trying to decide the level of drunkenness in any given scene, and I was always pushing for more drunk, and he didn’t want me to be drunk in every scene,” he said. “He was always pulling back, and I was always pushing for more just because I think it’s kind of funny and interesting. Knowing Gary, he got the right balance.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Adele, Rihanna Take Home Brit Awards

Grammy-winner Adele adds two trophies to her collection, while Foo Fighters, Bruno Mars and Coldplay also nabbed awards on Tuesday. By Jocelyn Vena Adele wins at the Brit Awards 2012 Photo: Dave M. Benett/ Getty Images On Tuesday (February 21), some of the biggest names in the music business headed to London’s O2 Arena for the 2012 Brit Awards , where Adele , Rihanna and Bruno Mars were among the stars who took home prizes. Grammy winner Adele added to her award collection by nabbing two Brits, including British Female Solo Artist and the night’s big prize, Mastercard British Album of the Year, for 21. And on Wednesday, the U.K. singer will celebrate the one-year anniversary of her chart-topping 21. “It’s been an amazing year,” she told the room as she accepted the Female Solo Artist prize. She then joked to presenter Kylie Minogue, “I feel like a drag queen next to you,” before thanking her record label for “for letting me be the kind of artist I want to be.” There were also live performances from Florence and the Machine, Coldplay, Bruno Mars, Rihanna and, of course, Adele, who sang “Rolling in the Deep” just a little over a week since her Grammy performance . Meanwhile, just as One Direction seems poised for a U.S. takeover the U.K. boy band nabbed a British Single award for their track “What Makes You Beautiful,” which was released in the States last week. Rihanna and Bruno Mars won International Female Solo Artist and International Male Solo Artist, respectively. “[Thanks to] all my fans who continue to support me no matter what,” said Rihanna, who made headlines on Tuesday (February 21) by adding Chris Brown to her “Birthday Cake” remix . Coldplay took home the British Group prize for the third time. On the other end of the spectrum, Grammy winners the Foo Fighters beat out folks like Jay-Z and Kanye West (a.k.a. the Throne), Lady Antebellum and Maroon 5 to win International Group. Lana Del Rey won the International Breakthrough Act award, just weeks after she dropped her debut, Born to Die. Other awards included Outstanding Contribution Award for Blur, a Critics Choice Award for Emeli Sande and British Male Solo Artist for singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran, who also took British Breakthrough Act. Jennifer Aniston Calls ‘Wanderlust’ Nude Scene No ‘Big Deal’

Aniston and co-star Paul Rudd dish on baring it all during our ‘First’ tomorrow at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com! By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jennifer Aniston Photo: MTV News In the lead-up to the release of the new comedy “Wanderlust,” much has been made of Jennifer Aniston ‘s purported nude scene in the film. But when MTV New’s Josh Horowitz sat down with Aniston and co-star Paul Rudd for our MTV First on Wednesday, the actress waved off the scene. “Yeah, big deal!” Aniston said, insisting that most of the talk around the scene was just sensational. “Isn’t that a good, fun headline? That’s what happens.” “Wanderlust” — fans can preview an exclusive clip when we launch our “First” special Wednesday at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com — takes place at a commune, where two down-on-their-luck New Yorkers, played by Aniston and Rudd, seek refuge. And when you consider that “Wet, Hot American Summer” helmer David Wain was behind the camera, nudity may seem tame. For Aniston, the scene was just another part of the job. “At that point, we had been shooting the movie for two months, two-and-a-half months, and the amount of things that we were asked to do that we were just like ‘All right,'” Aniston said. “At that point, that was like putting on my shoes.” The duo share the experience of onscreen skin, a fact Aniston felt compelled to share. “You’ve shown your butt,” she said to Rudd. “Many times,” he replied. “And onscreen as well,” Aniston joked. “In the makeup chair, he always never had clothes on.” “I had to get dressed for the shots,” Rudd replied. “But when we weren’t shooting, I was hanging brain, as it were.” For Aniston, nudity has to matter for where the character is heading in the story, and a crazy, purposeless nude scene would never work. “I think it depends on what the movie is. It felt like it would be gratuitous to do that in a movie like this and it would be more distracting from the movie and what was happening to the character,” she explained. “It would all be about, ‘Oh, you’re naked, so it’s boobs onscreen,’ so it would totally lose the fun and the empowering moment [my character], Linda, was having in that scene.” One of Aniston’s co-stars, however, does show a fair amount of skin, even if he’s wearing a prosthetic penis. ” Joe Lo Truglio , the first night he came out with his prosthetic penis, within five minutes we were all touching it,” Aniston revealed. “We were touching it, and we were examining it. It was just so interesting. It was just right there, underneath it. I think first night of shooting, I could resist, there was the beginning of many, many butt slaps.” Catch Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston tomorrow on MTV at 7:56 p.m. ET, when they’ll debut an exclusive, never-before-seen clip from “Wanderlust.” Then head over to MTV.com for our 30-minute chat with Rudd and Aniston.
