Emma Watson Is ‘Surprisingly Regular,’ Nina Dobrev Says At Emmys

‘Vampire Diaries’ actress also calls ‘Perks of Being a Wallflower’ co-star ‘impressive’ and ‘smart.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Nina Dobrev at the 2011 Emmys Nina Dobrev graced the Emmy red carpet, looking red hot in a body-hugging, fiery-hued gown. Dobrev’s career is also on fire these days. She just wrapped up work on the big-screen adaptation of “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” and gushed about her superstar pal and co-worker Emma Watson. “It was bittersweet, and we were all kind of sad to say bye,” Dobrev told MTV News on the Emmy red carpet Sunday (September 18) in L.A. “But we still keep in touch.” And she wasn’t lying: She was just hanging with some of her co-stars. It seems there are no wallflowers in this cast. “I saw Mae Whitman last night and Dylan McDermott, who is my dad, was there last night, and Em and I talk,” she shared. “She’s back in England going to Oxford, being all book smart.” So, what is the “Harry Potter” star like? “She’s so impressive,” Dobrev said. “She’s such a smart, smart young woman and surprisingly normal and cool and regular.” In addition to her move to the big screen, Dobrev’s also got the small screen to keep her busy. Her hit CW series “The Vampire Diaries” just kicked off its third season, and Dobrev revealed that things will get spicy. “The first episode just aired, and it was gritty, but at the same time, it felt like the beginning of our show,” she said. “It was a lot about the characters, the relationships, which we kind of started to fall back from. [Expect] a lot of love, a couple of new characters, and it’s going to be really exciting.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Chris Klein Becomes A Trendsetter On ‘When I Was 17’

The ‘American Pie’ star recalls a prank played on him in this Saturday’s episode. By Henna Kathiya Chris Klein on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV Chris Klein was already 20 when he played all-American lacrosse-player Oz, one of four friends trying to get laid by prom night in “American Pie.” But the movie’s hijinks and pranks weren’t far from his real-life experience in high school. In the latest episode of “When I Was 17,” airing Saturday at 11 a.m., Chris reminisces about a prank that was played at his expense in high school. “I went to public school, but I myself had a uniform, which was a white T-shirt, loose blue jeans and Airwalk shoes,” says the actor, who is reprising his Oz role for next year’s “American Reunion.” “Oh, and then there were the necklaces,” he adds, recalling the beaded necklaces in school colors that were made by the cheerleaders. “I was a huge fan of the necklaces.” Because the actor wore the same outfit without fail every single day, his fashion sense was something of notice for his fellow classmates. “One day, I walked into school and all of a sudden there is a bit of an uproar and everyone is clapping and laughing and having a good time. I look around and nearly everyone in my class was dressed exactly how I dressed every day,” he says. “It was dress like Chris Klein day.” His whole class showed up to school wearing white T-shirts and blue jeans, making sure not to forget the key element: the beaded necklaces. His classmates punked him for sure, which probably made acting in “American Pie” a piece of cake. For more stories from Chris’ youth, don’t miss the new episode of “When I Was 17,” also featuring Amy Lee and Theophilus London , airing Saturday at 11 a.m. ET on MTV. ‘Contagion’: The Reviews Are In!

‘You may never again be able to touch your face without asking yourself where those hands have been,’ one critic says of germ thriller. By Kara Warner Jude Law in “Contagion” Photo: WB Perhaps the most terrifying film opening in theaters this weekend is not one full of high-pitched screams, blood and guts, but rather the discomfort and cringing that accompanies the spread of killer germs. “Contagion” — featuring an all-star cast that includes Matt Damon, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Laurence Fishburne, Gwyneth Paltrow and Marion Cotillard — demonstrates how quickly a cough can turn into a worldwide epidemic, as the characters reel from the rapid progress of an airborne virus that kills within days. Ordinary citizens are forced to come to terms with disease and death, while the medical community scrambles to find a cure and control the hysteria that spreads along with the virus. With a certified fresh rating of more than 80 percent on Rotten Tomatoes , “Contagion” seems to be creeping out moviegoers in the best and most realistic way possible. The Story “Global in scale but very particular in focus, ‘Contagion’ unfolds as an engrossing, believable search for Patient Zero and an effective vaccine. (‘It’s not a good time to be a rhesus monkey,’ remarks one character dryly.) More grounded in science than suspense, its rhythms evoke the steady beat of the crime procedural as the Centers for Disease Control (represented by Laurence Fishburne, Kate Winslet and a terrific Jennifer Ehle) and the World Health Organization (fronted by Marion Cotillard) work to save lives and stem panic.” — Jeannette Catsoulis, NPR The Direction “From his very first independent films through the “Ocean’s” trilogy and the widely misunderstood, little-seen “Che,” Soderbergh has viewed human life and human actions from a voyeuristic, almost clinical perspective, and in that sense a movie about disease and science and bureaucracy — about systems, rather than people — is a perfect fit. … There’s really no arguing with “Contagion” on technical grounds. The story it tells is based on sound epidemiology (even if some individual plot events are implausible) and the composition and editing are masterful. Instead of the usual two and a half hours of a Roland Emmerich-style disaster flick, this one is an economical 105 minutes, none of them wasted.” — Andrew O’Hehir, Salon.com The Cringe Factor “What we have here is one of the finest “breakdown of society” movies I’ve ever seen. If you’re the type of person who finds the opening credits montage the most frightening aspect of Romero’s original “Dawn of the Dead,” the instigating event to the apocalypse in “Contagion” is (sigh) a very real threat. Read “Flu” by Gina Kolata — or better yet, don’t, because maybe you like sleeping at night.” — Jordan Hoffman, UGO The Final Word: Pro/Con/Pro Style “If you’re looking for some kind of poetry — some exalted dramatic arc that lifts this narrative out of the ordinary — you won’t find it here. ‘Contagion’ is as straightforward as an episode of ‘CSI,’ but it’s gripping from start to finish. Now, excuse me while I wipe down my computer keyboard. — Leonard Maltin, IndieWire “Juggling multiple plotlines proved successful in Mr. [Soderbergh]’s ‘Traffic’ (and even more so in Alejandro Gonz

Ratchet Movies We Can’t Help But Love

In every person’s film catalog, aka the dusty shelf of movies you have in your home, there are some deep dramas, some classic comedies and some thrilling action movies. Usually hidden in the back of that same shelf though are at least one or two movies that are extremely ratchet. The kinds that cause you to have to explain to nosey guests not only why you have them but why you love them. But there’s no shame in loving a ratchet movie or two, and everyone has their faves. We’ve come up with a list of 10 films that are questionable in taste but get the most play in DVD players, or dare I say, old VHS players, time and time again. They’re all known for some crazy, stereotypical or random behavior from their characters, yet they manage to have us rollin’! And don’t front! I’m sure you’ve seen at least a handful of the ones on this list. Feel free to shout out your faves! Continued at MadameNoire.com

Robert Rodriguez Explains ‘4-D’ Smells In ‘Spy Kids 4’

Director tells MTV News about film’s use of ‘Aroma-Scope’ technology. By Kara Warner Joel McHale, Jessica Alba, Mason Cook and Rowan Blanchard in “Spy Kids 4” Photo: Dimension Films Director Robert Rodriguez has made a career out of pushing the filmmaking envelope in various ways, from “Desperado” to “From Dusk Till Dawn” to his very successful “Spy Kids” franchise, which includes the first resurgent 3-D film, 2003’s “Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over.” To mark the release of the fourth “Spy Kids” film, Rodriguez has added another level to the 3-D canon with “Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D.” And what exactly makes a film 4-D? A little extra sensory overload provided by what Rodriguez calls an “Aroma-Scope.” “Instead of just going 3-D like we did on the last one, we brought in 4-D, which is a very fun gimmick that I found in this old movie in the ’80s,” Rodriguez told MTV News of being inspired by John Waters’ use of Smell-O-Vision for 1981’s “Polyester.” “It’s kind of a scratch-and-sniff [experience] and you get to be really, almost like a video game, interactive with the movie. There are some really surprising smells, and some of the biggest laughs come from that.” Rodriguez went on to say that the Aroma-Scope, which is a card with eight numbers on it that audience members are given with their 3-D glasses, provides viewers with a less passive and more interactive film-going experience. “Even my own kids, people today are so interactive with gaming that to go and watch the movie feels so passive, so this really bridges the gap between the two,” he explained. “You’re watching the movie and then almost like video game numbers come up and you [scratch] the cards and smell almost exactly what the characters are smelling. It’s funny, the characters are all reacting to it, the adults are reacting to it — it’s really fun.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Spy Kids: All the Time in the World.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Scott Speedman on Good Neighbors, Hollywood’s Unfortunate Vampire Trend, and Fake Tanning

Of all the characters who share the same Montreal apartment building in Jacob Tierney’s dark crime comedy Good Neighbors , Scott Speedman plays the absolute worst. His Spencer is an acrimonious widower/invalid who toys with his neighbors (played by Emily Hampshire and Jay Baruchel) for sport while hiding a twisted nocturnal alter ego as a serial killer terrorizes the nearby area. If you need evidence that Speedman — still best known for his work on Felicity and the Underworld series — has graduated from playing the sensitive, brooding, NYU student type, you’ll certainly find it here.
