‘Transformers: Dark Of The Moon’: The Reviews Are In

Michael Bay’s summer blockbuster has critics praising his deft handling of eye-popping 3-D. By Eric Ditzian Sentinel Prime in “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” Photo: Paramount Pictures As even Michael Bay has admitted, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” had almost nowhere to go but up after the writers’ strike-affected, audience-alienating previous installment . And insofar as Bay and company had something to prove — and to improve — this time around, they’ve succeeded. While “Dark of the Moon” isn’t currently the highest rated film in the franchise, according to the Rotten Tomatoes review aggregator, the general consensus among critics is that the new 3-D flick is best of the “Transformers” bunch. That’s not to suggest reviews have been universally positive; many have been as brutal to the film as the film’s robots have been to certain American cities. Reviewers have taken issue with poor plotting, weak characters and brain-scrambling action set pieces. But then there are a slew of reviewers utterly onboard with what Bay has created, celebrating some of the finest 3-D visuals since “Avatar” and a story that is the most fully fleshed out of the series. For those opinions and others, take a deep dive into the “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” reviews. The Story “A sweet prologue (marred only by a phony-looking digital JFK) recounts the war for Cybertron and the real reason behind the U.S.-Soviet space race of the 1960s. Cut to the present where Sam Witwicky (LaBeouf) struggles to find his first post-college job, while the Autobots led by Optimus Prime and the U.S. military’s NEST team led by Lt. Col. Lennox (Josh Duhamel) work in tandem to take out the remaining Decepticons around the world. However, the evil ‘bots eventually get the upper hand and begin an invasion to conquer the Earth with Chicago as Ground Zero in this final war between the Autobots/humans and Decepticons. There’s more going on, but for the sake of spoilers we’ll keep it at that. Transformers: Dark of the Moon definitely has more of a plot than either of its predecessors. There are genuine stakes this time.” — Jim Vejvoda, IGN The 3-D “[For] the first time since ‘Avatar,’ I am going to recommend that you find the biggest and best 3-D theater you can find and buy yourself a ticket, because ‘Transformers: Dark Of the Moon,’ especially seen in IMAX 3-D, is an overwhelming sensory experience. The sound mix alone is more exciting than anything in the billion-dollar-bore of ‘Pirates 4.’ This is gigantic action we’ve never seen before, and Bay’s reaction to shooting and cutting his film for 3-D is to get better at what he does. It raised his game, and as a result, I feel like we just saw a dare thrown down by one of Hollywood’s biggest action specialists: ‘Top this.’ — Drew McWeeny, HitFix The Comparisons “Bay’s hammering technique works, in a commercial sense. Executive producer Steven Spielberg is the richer for it. But it’s telling to compare any good minute in Spielberg’s ‘War of the Worlds,’ for example, with any of the 153 minutes in ‘Dark of the Moon.’ The former, which isn’t even Spielberg at his best, offers the thrill and the uneasy, complicated spectacle of destruction you get from a first-rate entertainer. Bay’s endless love of nastiness and chrome and aggression offers less. And that’s the only ‘less’ about it.” — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune The Characters “All that matters is the long, slow slog to the Chicago-set, theater-rattling finale, which seems to last about four hours. That’s not a compliment, by the way. There’s so much potential in a Transformer, which can, after all, transform into anything. But Bay misses every opportunity to make something interesting out of his characters; instead, he’s content to spend his enormous budget on grinding destruction so generic and visually convoluted, it’s often hard to tell who we’re supposed to be rooting for.” — Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News The Final Word “More than either of the previous films, this ‘Transformers 3’ feels like an ultra-violent version of the two-dimensional cartoon it’s based on. I think I’m almost alright with that, when it’s done this well, in this kind of summer blockbuster. We’d probably all be happier watching another movie like ‘Inception,’ but as long as those movies still get made, I guess there’s nothing wrong in sitting down with a ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon,’ once in awhile.” — Josh Tyler, Cinema Blend Check out everything we’ve got on “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Miley Cyrus Sexy Pajams in these So Undercover Stills of Day

Here are some stills of Miley in some movie called So Undercover, that I am sure won’t win her an Oscar, because straigth to DVD doesn’t count to the pretentious Academy, but should, because this is Miley Cyrus at her best and she’s a fucking genius on all levels, a natural talent who makes us really feel her characters, she’s got such depth in her work….ok that joke done… I think she’s lost her appeal since she turned 18, all her pervert fans who made up 90 percent of her search terms have moved onto other underage girls, leaving her confused, unsexualized and alone….with no real clear way to go…I am surprised there hasn’t been a sex tape released and that this underwear pajama is the best she can give us…and I’ll post it anyway…even though she’s almost 19 and this kind of thing isn’t as alluring to you weirdos…

Jamie Foxx And will.i.am Get ‘Smooth’ In ‘Rio’

‘The first key to being smooth is, you don’t necessarily always have to be smooth,’ will says of their characters. By Kara Warner will.i.am and Jamie Foxx Photo: MTV News The new animated movie “Rio” has plenty of intriguing things going for it, including the wholesome love story of two parrots, bright colors, beautiful scenery and soothing samba music from composer Sergio Mendes. Even beyond that are the comedic stylings of the film’s supporting characters, namely smooth operators/ ladies’ birds Pedro and Nico, voiced by real-life ladies’ men will.i.am and Jamie Foxx . When MTV caught up with the jokesters recently at the junket for “Rio,” we asked what lengths they would go to in order to impress a woman. “I would do anything to impress women, because that’s why we do whatever we do,” Foxx said. “You actually think that we do this for money? That’s nothing. If tomorrow they said that women love tomatoes, best bet, I would have 40 acres of a tomato farm, letting girls do tours, you know what I’m saying? So whatever a woman likes is what I like.” And regarding their key strategies to being smooth, will.i.am had some very creative advice that may or may not involve a loofah. “The first key to being smooth is, you don’t necessarily always have to be smooth,” he said. “You feel what I’m saying? Girls know it. You need to be exfoliated. You can exfoliate with smoothness. You got to rub them rough edges, smooth ’em out. It takes roughness to make it smooth.” “Man, he said it,” Foxx said when asked if his smooth operations were similar to will’s. “Exfoliating was the word,” he said with a chuckle. “I didn’t see that one coming.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Rio.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . You’ll be hearing more from our intrepid Jen Yamato from the WonderCon panel on Tarsem Singh’s god fight flick Immortals later on, but for now take a gander at these just released posters for some of the characters. Pictured are new Superman Henry Cavill as Theseus, Luke Evans as Zeus, Kellan Lutz as Poseidon, Isabel Lucas as Athena and Daniel Sharman as Aries. Other than the dusky nectarine color scheme, it looks like the movie is very consciously trying to get some of that sweet, sweet 300 money by aping the look and feel of that other sword ‘n sandals stab epic. But bonus points to anyone who can tell me what that Tang-like liquid is that’s swirling all around them.

Megan Fox Reportedly Joining ‘Knocked Up’ Spin-Off

Judd Apatow flick would be Fox’s first studio film since leaving ‘Transformers’ last year. By Eric Ditzian Megan Fox Photo: Jean Baptiste Lacroix/ Getty Images In what would mark her return to studio filmmaking after departing the “Transformers” franchise last May, Megan Fox is reportedly in negotiations to join Judd Apatow’s upcoming Universal comedy . According to The Hollywood Reporter , Fox is eyeing a co-starring role in the project, which is a spin-off of “Knocked Up” and will have Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann reprising their characters from the hit 2007 comedy. Her potential role, at this point, is being kept a secret. MTV News’ request for comment from Fox’s rep was not immediately returned. The production would be Fox’s first studio flick after parting ways with Paramount and “Transformers” last year. At that point, she’d already wrapped “Jonah Hex,” which went on to bomb at the box office, and “Passion Play,” which never received a theatrical release. Since then, she’s stepped in front of the camera for Jennifer Westfeldt’s indie “Friends With Benefits.” At the Oscars last month, Apatow told us the as-yet-untitled comedy was currently in rehearsals and that the story will take place four or five years after the events of “Knocked Up” (though in the vein of “Get Him to the Greek” after “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” the new comedy won’t be a sequel). “The rest is a secret because it doesn’t come out until 2012 and if you already knew what it was about for a year and a half, you wouldn’t even want to see it,” he laughed. We can, however, expect that, as Apatow put it, “some familiar people” will show up in the new flick. Perhaps by now, “Knocked Up” star Seth Rogen has heard if his services will be needed, because when we asked the actor about it in January, he had no idea. “[Judd] mentioned it to me off-handedly a year ago, and then I just read about it just like everybody else. I was like, ‘Oh man, it looks like it’s really happening,’ ” Rogen explained. “So, I don’t know,” he added. “I’m going to call him today and see what the deal is.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

DVD: Five Non-John Hughes ’80s Teen Comedies That Are Still a Bajillion Times Better Than Take Me Home Tonight

So not only does Take Me Home Tonight get the small details wrong — someone makes a Rain Man reference even though TMHT is set during Labor Day Weekend 1988 and Rain Man wouldn’t be seen for a few more months — it also fails to capture the charm and the laughs that we think of when we recall the great teen flicks of the 1980s. And even taking the great John Hughes out of the equation (and seriously, TMHT , how very DARE you have sent your characters to “Shermer High”? Blasphemy!), there are plenty of actual ’80s movies that will bring you far more joy this weekend on DVD than this crappy new comedy. Ahead, five better options.

Demi Lovato Video Message To Fans Coming Monday

Singer, who left treatment in January, will speak via Cambio.com. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato Photo: Jason LaVeris/ FilmMagic Demi Lovato has remained on the down low since leaving a treatment facility in late January. Fans have been wondering what is next for the Disney star, and now it seems they will find out. According to Cambio.com , the singer will appear on the site Monday in “a special video message to all her fans.” “This will be the first time since leaving treatment that Demi will speak directly to her fans to thank them for their support,” the statement reads. “Demi is excited to be getting back to work and reuniting with her fans around the world.” The news comes on the heels of an interview in which her “Sonny With a Chance” co-star Brandon Mychal Smith confirmed that the show’s name was set to be changed to “So Random,” the name of the show the characters in “Sonny” work on. “With a show like ours, each season you focus on a different concept, a different theory, or maybe a different character’s background,” Smith said. “Season one, we established who we were — you saw some mini-sketches, you saw who the characters were and how they mingled and intertwined. Season two, you were able to see more of the relationship between Sonny and Chad and how they got into it and how we didn’t like it, and you saw some of Mackenzie Falls and that aspect. “And now, this season,” he continued, “you’ll be able to see ‘So Random,’ see why we are where we are today in regards to being the teen idols that we are. You’ll be able to see how we bring the funny every week.” With questions about what that means for Lovato and her role on the show, Disney told MTV News, “Demi’s management will inform us when she is ready to return to work. Last November, we announced that we would focus on our ‘So Random’ sketch-comedy show to keep the staff, cast and crew employed. We began production in January and will debut those episodes this spring. As you know, Disney Channel previously aired ‘So Random’ specials to strong ratings.” What are you hoping to see from Demi Lovato now that she’s finished treatment? Share your thoughts below.
