Johnny Depp Says There’s A Little ‘Rango’ In All Of Us

‘We find ourselves in certain situations that you have to adapt to,’ Depp tells MTV News of his cartoon chameleon. By Kara Warner Rango, voiced by Johnny Depp, in “Rango” Photo: Paramount Johnny Depp is one of those actors who disappear so fully into the characters he plays onscreen that with each new film, it’s hard to know what to expect from the Oscar nominee. Depp’s latest, the animated pic “Rango,” is no exception. In the film — directed by Depp’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” director Gore Verbinski and featuring the vocal talents of Abigail Breslin, Isla Fischer and Bill Nighy — Depp plays the title character, a chameleon living a lonely life in a cage as a family pet. But Rango is also an aspiring actor so he stages elaborate plays within the confines of his little glass home. He suddenly finds his life turned upside down when his cage is accidentally thrown out of his owners’ car during a cross-country move, landing him in the strange town of Dirt in the Nevada desert. MTV News caught up with Depp and we asked him if, given his chameleon-like abilities as an actor, he felt a sense of kinship with the little green reptile, and whether Rango is perhaps the closest he’s come to playing himself. “What I saw early on with the character, and something that Gore and I talked about, is that it is in sort of all of us, in a way,” Depp explained. “There is a chameleonic side to all of us in which we find ourselves in certain situations that you have to adapt to, sitting across from personalities that you have to adapt to in order to survive the moment or survive the day,” he said. “That’s kind of how I saw Rango.” Who’s your favorite Johnny Depp character? Tell us in the comments! Check out everything we’ve got on “Rango.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

David Guetta ‘Had A Blast’ Filming With Web Sensation Keenan Cahill

Dance-music superstar makes the trip to 15-year-old’s Chicago home to shoot latest lip-synching video. By Akshay Bhansali David Guetta Photo: MTV News When will David Guetta begin recording with U2 ? We can’t confirm just yet, but on Tuesday (January 25), the French hitmaker added yet another name to an already stellar list of collaborators. Only this time, he’s not pairing up with Akon, Black Eyed Peas or Madonna, but Internet sensation Keenan Cahill . In just over a year, the Chicago 15-year-old has become a Web phenomenon by filming himself lip-synching pop songs from his bedroom. Ke$ha, Usher, Willow Smith, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Pink are just a few artists who have gotten the Cahill treatment; his deliveries of “Like a G6,” “Only Girl (In the World)” and “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” have more than 7 million views. Thus far, his version of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” is the most popular, with more than 27 million views. Late last year, Cahill appeared on “Chelsea Lately,” where the bespectacled teen gave host Chelsea Handler his digits and premiered his clip of 50 Cent and Jeremih’s “Down on Me,” in which Fif appears. He also appeared on MTV’s New Year’s Eve special donning 2011 shades in a vid set to Pink’s “Raise Your Glass.” Cahill premiered his latest achievement, featuring David Guetta, on Tuesday, set to a medley of Guetta’s hit songs (“Sexy Chick,” “Memories,” “When Love Takes Over,” “Gettin’ Over You” and his BEP classic “I Gotta Feeling”). When MTV News caught up with Guetta last week, he had just returned from Chicago after filming the clip with Cahill in his bedroom, and he was still beaming from the experience. “I had a blast,” Guetta said. “I went to Chicago, and we just shot that video. It’s really cool. It’s really funny, and he’s a really clever kid. Keenan is really a YouTube phenomenon. It’s unbelievable. He’s only 15, and he really knows what he’s doing. His expressions are really funny and interesting.” Guetta described a bit about what happens in the clip. “I was behind him. Sometimes I was there, sometimes I wasn’t. It was about him, really. I think that’s better like that,” he said. “I just wanted to show support, and I thought it was a cool thing. I’m sure people are going to love this.” And if Cahill weren’t big enough already, Guetta certainly knows a place where he is set to become a whole lot more famous. “I’m sure people are going to love this. Probably, he’s going to become really big now in France,” Guetta laughed.

‘Skins’ Stars Say Despite Kissing Tony, Tea Still A Lesbian

Sofia Black-D’Elia and James Newman talk about characters’ attraction. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Adam Murphy Sofia Black D’Elia (Tea) Photo: Jason Nacito On Monday night’s episode of “Skins,” Tea made it abundantly clear that she’s a lesbian. Even though she kissed a certain male friend in her clique, the make-out session only proved to her what she already knew. Sofia Black-D’Elia , who plays Tea, and James Newman, who plays Tony (the center of Tea’s affections for a hot minute), told MTV News the kiss wasn’t a case of the show backing out on the lesbian plotline. “They’re kind of brought together by this attraction, and I don’t think it’s necessarily a sexual attraction,” Newman explained. “I think it’s a situation where you have these two people who are very bored, with no one in their lives that really gets them, and on that level, it’s like a perfect attraction. “But on another level, it’s a disaster because Tea’s a lesbian. It’s not a situation where it’s like she’s a lesbian and then she finds a guy and is like, ‘I’m not a lesbian anymore.’ She really is a lesbian, and so for her it doesn’t work, and for Tony, that in and of itself tortures him.” The kiss not only teaches the characters a lot about themselves, but also shows viewers the multiple sides each of these characters possess. “Tony is the manipulator; he’s the ringleader. By episode two, his vulnerabilities start to show, which is really interesting to think because it’s the other side of Tony that was missing for me,” Black-D’Elia explained. “Why should you care about this guy? He’s an ass. I think as soon as episode two is over, you kind of have this very strong love for him. He’s got more of a heart going on than he’d like to put out.” Don’t miss “Skins,” airing Mondays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Related Photos Skins | Cast Photos | Tony Skins | Cast Photos | Tea

REVIEW: Characters Can’t Quite Connect Amid the City-Symphony Elegance of Mumbai Diaries

Set amid the stark dualities of the new Bombay, Mumbai Diaries follows four characters whose lives suggest the various ways one can experience what writer Suketu Mehta dubbed the “maximum city,” and the social and economic determinism that closes each of those experiences off from the others. The film, writer and director Kiran Rao’s feature debut, is marked by an ambition as grand as it is vulnerable to classist cliché. Rao’s ultimate achievements — including a balanced, doleful tone and moments of city symphony elegance — are undercut by the arrangement of her characters into narrative castes that cross paths but can’t quite connect.

15 Casting Suggestions for Riggs and Murtaugh in the Lethal Weapon Remake

As detailed in this morning’s edition of The Broadsheet , Hollywood went remake crazy while you were sleeping, with planned relaunches of Lethal Weapon , Westworld , The Wild Bunch and Annie all presumably coming to a theater near you in the next five years. Nothing there should inherently surprise you — this is Hollywood after all, where announcing remakes is otherwise known as a weekday — but it’s still a bit demoralizing. With that in mind, let’s remoralize! (Invented word!) Ahead, Movieline offers 15 duos who might make the planned relaunch of Lethal Weapon almost tolerable. Suggestions welcome.

It’s the day Movieline HQ has been waiting for: Thursday, Jan. 20, better known here as Parks and Recretaion Finally Returns to Television Day! ( Rob Lowe is no doubt thrilled .) Apparently, though, it’s also the day that pictures of a very young Amy Poehler surfaced on the Internet. Can you guess the story behind this photo of the Boston College grad?
