REVIEW: Actions Speak Louder Than Dirty Words in No Strings Attached

It’s a noble thing to make a movie that tries to capture the way real people speak. But how do you know how close you’re getting? And even when you put raunchy turns of phrase or the most current slang in your characters’ mouths, are you really capturing the reality of those characters’ — or of anyone’s — lives? Language is either a part of the landscape of a movie or it’s window dressing, the first thing you notice. Can movie speech be believable and natural when it jumps out at us?

‘Skins’ Cast Talks Sex, Drugs And American Teens

MTV’s provocative new show is really about ‘the relationships, and that’s what teenagers relate to,’ star Sofia Black-D’Elia says. By Jocelyn Vena A scene from MTV’s “Skins” Photo: MTV At first glance, it might seem easy to boil down the teen drama “Skins” to a simple format: teens doing lots of drugs while having lots of sex and listening to lots of rock and roll. But the cast of MTV’s American version of the soapy U.K. show, which premiered on Monday night, say you’re not watching closely enough if that’s all you see. “I don’t think the sex and the drugs is really what’s prominent. … Throughout the season, what’s more important is the relationships, and that’s what teenagers relate to,” Sofia Black-D’Elia explained. ” ‘Skins’ isn’t about drugs and sex. ‘Skins’ is about best friends and growing up.” But it does raise the question: Are kids really that wild? “There definitely are kids like this that exist in America,” Daniel Flaherty, who plays Stanley, told MTV News recently. “There are those kids that love to party and go out and disobey their parents and do whatever they want and do take whatever pills and drugs, so not all of America is like that, but there’s definitely kids in America that are like that.” “Things like this certainly happen [in real life],” added James Newman, who plays Tony. “I don’t think they necessarily happen with the frequency that it happens on ‘Skins,’ but it’s TV and we want it to be entertaining and it helps from a standpoint on sex and drugs. It doesn’t happen as much, but I think as far as relationships the friends have with each other and the emotions, that stuff is dead-on, spot for spot what we went through in high school. … Anytime you see sex and drugs on ‘Skins,’ it’s about the story. It’s never that for the sake of that.” Britne Oldford plays Cadie, and she told us she hopes viewers will be able to relate to the characters. “I definitely hope that teens, even adults or parents that watch the show, take away a sense of security because, hey, maybe they’ll see someone who’s a lot like them going through the [same] situation,” she said. “And they won’t feel so alone. Everyone in the show is relatable to a certain extent.” What did you think of the first episode of “Skins”? Share your thoughts in the comments below! Arthur Christmas Trailer Would Like You to Start Thinking About Next Christmas

Just as excitement and anxiety for the upcoming holiday approaches its peak, here comes Hollywood with a reminder of the rapidly approaching Christmas 2011. Thanks guys! The teaser for Arthur Christmas plays out like most other recent CGI animation teasers; that is, it’s more of a short film featuring the characters rather than a preview with any footage from the film. But hey, it finds a way to play off everyone’s current fascination with UFO s, which is something. I guess.

‘Buffy’ Creator Joss Whedon Reacts To ‘Sad’ Reboot Plans

‘I don’t love the idea of my creation in other hands,’ the writer/director laments in a message to E! Online. By Eric Ditzian Joss Whedon Photo: Dave Hogan/Getty Images Buffy Summers will rise again. Just don’t expect her creator to be very excited about the prospect. Joss Whedon, who penned 1992’s “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and then adapted the movie into the beloved and long-running WB series, has spoken out after Warner Bros. announced plans to reboot the property for the big screen. Characteristically resigned, self-aware and condescending all at once, Whedon spoke about his reluctance to see his characters taken over by others, even as he acknowledged doing the same thing himself. “This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths — just because they can’t think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my ‘Avengers’ idea that I made up myself,” he wrote in a statement to E! Online . Whedon is currently shepherding an adaptation of “The Avengers,” Marvel’s superhero all-star franchise, toward a theatrical release. While he realizes such pop culture appropriation is commonplace, he still bristles at the idea that it’s happening to his work. “I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death,” he said. “But, you know, AFTER. I don’t love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I’m also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly. I can’t wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill.” This isn’t the first time Whedon has released a statement mixing humor and pathos after a newsworthy development involving his work. After Fox canceled “Dollhouse” last year, he announced , “I’m off to pursue Internet ventures/binge drinking. Possibly that relaxation thing I’ve read so much about. By the time the last episode airs, you’ll know what my next project is. But for now there’s a lot of work still to be done, and disappointment to bear.” Let the disappointment begin anew. Before signing off from his latest message “Leave me to my pain,” Whedon jokingly wondered if vampires are even popular anymore and promised he’ll soon be shooting a new “Batman” flick. “Because there’s a franchise that truly needs updating,” he wrote. “So look for ‘The Dark Knight Rises Way Earlier Than That Other One And Also More Cheaply And In Toronto,’ rebooting into a theater near you.” How do you feel about a “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot? Tell us in the comments.

Do fictional shows need disclaimers? Or have we gone warning crazy?

Actress Kathryn Joosten, a lung cancer survivor, recently suggested that Mad Men producers should be including a disclaimer on the show saying that smoking is hazardous to your health. Aside from smoking, there are plenty of other ill-advised decisions made by the characters on the show. Should we include warnings for those as well? Perhaps one against false identities or cheating on your wife? In this day and age, is the fact that smoking causes cancer something that we need to be reminded of? Or should we assume viewers recognize that the behavior depicted in the show is a reflection of a different time and place, where we didn’t have the information we do now? added by: sgwhites
