Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’ Musical Is Political And Personal

‘It’s about people becoming lost and just trying to find their way,’ Billie Joe Armstrong tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Billie Joe Armstrong at “American Idiot” on Broadway Photo: Jason Kempin/ Getty Images By now, you’re probably aware that Green Day’s 2004 album American Idiot was a fairly, uh, political affair. And while the Broadway version of the record doesn’t exactly shy away from the topic, it also reveals a side of the music that most probably never realized was there in the first place: the personal. “I think, politically, American Idiot, when we were writing it, it was trying to make sense out of a big mess,” Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong said. “You’re trying to find something to believe in, but it’s difficult when you’re getting bombarded with useless information. So it’s just [about] trying to find your identity and your individualism in the midst of all that.” “That’s the political side, but on the personal side, there’s characters in American Idiot that allowed Billie and us to carry those emotions and translate them,” bassist Mike Dirnt added. “And I think that it’s really great. We’ve had those characters, and in the play, [director] Michael Mayer has expanded on that … made a more linear approach to it with adding extra characters and expanding the original story-line concept.” So while the Broadway reimagining of Idiot is plenty loud and raucous, there’s also more of the softer stuff: the voyage of discovery that three bored teens embark on, the struggle to find themselves in a world gone haywire. It’s the kind of stuff that resonates not just with Armstrong, but with theater-going audiences too — which is sort of the point, if you think about it. “I think a lot of people weighed really heavy on the ‘American’ side of American Idiot and what it’s like to be an American and what it means when the record came out, so a lot of people were looking towards the political, angry part of it,” Armstrong said. “But I think there is a theme with the characters, it’s about people becoming lost and just trying to find their way, and I think that’s a theme that’s been going through our songs since 1988, and it really kind of manifests itself, you know, with the characters, like Jesus of Suburbia, Whatsername and St. Jimmy. And now, on the stage, that’s really coming across. You’re investing into the characters a lot more and identifying with them.” Do you want to head to NYC to check out “American Idiot” on Broadway? Desperate Housewives Stars Stick by Marc Cherry, Issue Statement

Nicollette Sheridan says she felt compelled to bring a lawsuit against Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry, following an incident last year in which the actress says her boss struck her across the face. Now, Sheridan’s former co-workers feel equally compelled to stand up for Cherry. The main Desperate Housewives cast members – Eva Longoria Parker, Teri Hatcher, Marcia Cross and Felicity Huffman – have issued a joint statement that pledges full support for Cherry. It reads: “It would be irresponsible of us to let the public believe that being a part of this show from its inception has been anything but a blessing. We have no first-hand knowledge of what Nicollette may or may not have experienced, but we would never characterize our set as a hostile environment. “It is, in fact, the opposite. The friendships and support that Marc Cherry, the cast, the crew and the producers have shared for the past six years have made this a wonderful job that we are grateful for every day.” Because Teri Hatcher was singled out in the lawsuit – Sheridan alleges Cherry said he hopes Hatcher “gets hit by a car and dies” – that actress says she never authorized Sheridan’s attorneys to use her name and: “While my adoration and respect for the classic and dynamic chemistry of the characters of Susan and Edie is indelible, I’m honored to stand with Eva, Felicity and Marcia, as a group and clarify that our set environment is nothing less than an amazingly positive experience. I have never felt discriminated against. In fact, I have felt heard and respected by Marc and other executives in regards to both my professional and personal needs.” Man, no Desperate Housewives spoilers or storylines can compare to the drama taking place away from the set of this hit show. Whose side are you on in the battle between Sheridan and Cherry?

The Gossip Girl Pun Index: Wedding Bell Blues

Since the kids on Gossip Girl are too young to get married — but not too young to own hotels or work in the fashion industry — the traditional wedding episode that you’d expect to see in the third season of a series fell to the likes of Dorota the maid and her boyfriend, Vanya the doorman. And while their “bedding” — as Vanya called it in his best John Malkovich-in- Rounders accent — was adorable, it was like a daisy growing out of a garbage heap. For the rest of the characters, last night’s Gossip Girl , “The Unblairable Lightness of Being,” offered the usual array of lying, cheating, back-stabbing and even a little heartbreak (say it ain’t so, Blair and Chuck!). Oh, and puns. Lots of patented, Gossip Girl-voiced, puns. How did they all rank? To the list!

‘Glee’ Stars Say New Season Is ‘Different Than What You Expect’

‘It’s like ‘Glee’ 3.0,’ Dijon Talton says. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Audrey Kim Mark Salling, Dijon Talton, Jenna Ushkowitz, Harry Shum, Jane Lynch and Dianna Agron at the “Glee” premiere Photo: Craig Barritt/WireImage “Glee” is returning to television sets on Tuesday (April 13) with promises of tributes to Madonna and Lady Gaga lined up for this season. And the “Glee” club promised us that when fans tune into the show for this new crop of episodes, anything is possible — there will be lots of hot hook-ups and tons of interesting and unexpected musical numbers. “Everybody’s relationships when we come back are just really different,” Dianna Agron said of the characters’ love lives. “Different than what you expect.” Co-star Heather Morris added that there will be some shake-ups in the worlds of love and friendship on the show. “We create relationships … [There are] a lot more relationships,” she said. “We start to like a lot more people. I can say that.” And while this season the show will pay homage to both Lady Gaga and Madonna, Mark Salling admitted he had a favorite, telling MTV News he really loved the way one Madonna classic turned out. “We did ‘Like a Prayer’ in the Madonna episode,” he shared. “It’s my favorite number in that episode.” There are a number of guest stars lined up including Neil Patrick Harris , with Jennifer Lopez rumored to stop by this season as well. Dijon Talton summed up the ensuing craziness best: “You’re gonna see people you never thought hook up, hook up. Songs you never thought you’d hear, you’re gonna hear. Dance moves you never thought you’d see [you’ll see]. It’s like ‘Glee’ 3.0.” What are you looking forward to seeing when “Glee” returns? Tell us in the comments! Bryce Dallas Howard Featured in ‘Saturday Night’ Magazine

Less than 3 months away until we get to see Bryce Dallas Howard play Victoria in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and I’m totally rooting for her to do an amazing job in this role. The actress is featured in Saturday Night magazine’s “Celebrity Spotlight” where she talks about joining the close-knit Twilight cast and the pressure she felt of continuing a role already played by Rachelle Lefevre. SNMag: What has it been like joining the cast of Twilight? BDH: It’s a really extraordinary series and obviously the franchise really reflects what Stephenie Meyer has created with a lot of integrity. She’s so involved with the movies and it is really wonderful. It’s really an incredible storytelling moment. And people are really connecting with and responding to that. So I read the books and I just did my best for the character Victoria. I just wanted to do my best not to interfere with the books. SNMag: Did you feel pressure coming into this, with the character already being established? BDH: Yes, of course I did. Rachelle [Lefevre] did an extraordinary job at creating Victoria and part of the joy of a franchise like this is getting to see not only the characters grow but the actors continuing to grow with the characters. That’s a lot of the joy in the Harry Potter series. Every time I see one of those movies it’s so exciting to see them because they’re all getting a little bit older and different things are happening to them. It’s like watching a TV show. You start to connect with the actors really deeply. It was really unfortunate for everybody that Rachelle left. I did feel, I don’t know if I should say a pressure, but an enormous responsibility because the fans felt really strongly about the role of Victoria and they felt a deep connection to Rachelle, which they should because she is also beautiful and talented. I really did do my best and I hope that whatever work I did can somehow honor what had been created before and what was created by Stephenie. I felt really grateful to this because Rachelle and I have connected. She’s an amazing woman and has been enormously and overwhelmingly helpful. SNMag: What was the shooting like for you? Did you have an opportunity to hang out with the cast and bond with them? BDH: Oh, yes, I mean they’re a very tight-knit group of people who are just wonderful. They’re incredibly authentic and none of them are getting swept up by the mania of this. They just care about each other and are protective of each other. They are just a great group of friends. I feel like all of these people would have been friends regardless. They all bonded through this amazing moment that’s happening in their lives. {via Saturday Night Magazine }
