Martese Johnson Files Federal Lawsuit Against Virginia Officers UVA student Martese Johnson has filed a federal lawsuit against the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control and three officers following a brutal and bloody arrest that went viral in March. According to The Root reports: The lawsuit claims that the ABC violated the 21-year-old’s constitutional rights, accusing agents of unlawfully detaining Johnson when he was arrested in the early-morning hours of March 18 following St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. Officers “brutally assaulted, seized, arrested and jailed Martese without probable cause and in violation of the United States Constitution, federal statutes and the laws of Virginia, believing (falsely and without sufficient information) that Martese had presented a fake identification card to gain entry to a restaurant and bar on University Avenue in the City of Charlottesville, Va.,” the lawsuit reads, according to the Post. The suit contends that the ID was valid. Johnson was charged with public intoxication or swearing and obstruction of justice without force, but those charges were dropped by Charlottesville prosecutor Warner Chapman, the Post reports We hope Martese finally gets the justice he deserves!

Virginia To Retrain Police After Brutal Beating Of UVA Student After Martese Johnson was brutally beaten by police outside an area bar with no real reason, the state of Virginia appears to be taking measures to rectify the issue. First a formal investigation was launched into the incident, and now, the governor of Virginia has ordered an emergency re-training of state officers in alcohol enforcement. But can a retraining on policy put a stop to bias-based actions like Martese’s beating? Via RawStory : Virginia’s governor, Terry McAuliffe, has issued an executive order mandating that state alcoholic beverage control enforcement agents be retrained in the wake of the violent arrest of university student Martese Johnson – who is appearing in court on Thursday charged with resisting arrest and public drunkenness. In swift action just a week after the event that occurred outside the University of Virginia (UVA) campus in Charlottesville, McAuliffe signed an executive order on Wednesday that is due to go into effect immediately and requires all such agents to be retrained by 1 September. State alcoholic beverage control (ABC) officers arrested Johnson, 20, close to the UVA grounds after he was turned away from a bar that was only admitting over-21s. Johnson ended up on the ground with blood gushing down his face from a head wound, in a scene that was captured on mobile phone video and went viral, sparking mass protests on campus and prompting the governor to order a state police investigation. In addition to the investigation, which is expected to continue until late May, McAuliffe issued an executive order that ABC enforcement agents must be retrained in the use of force and in matters of cultural diversity and how they interact with young people. The body of missing Virginia college student Hannah Graham has been discovered and identified, according to breaking news reports. She was only 18. Hannah Graham Search: Human Remains Found A landscaper was heading to a job site outside of Charlottesville, Va., actually called the police tip line September 30 when he made a startling discovery. “There was buzzards on the rooftop, as well as on a tree on the back left corner of the property,” Bobby Pugh said. “Not a normal amount, 20 to 30 at least.” About an hour later, Pugh made a phone call, as did hundreds if not thousands of others calling in with any shred of intel that could help law enforcement. Hannah Graham was last seen September 13, on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall. Jesse Matthew Jr. has been charged with the college student’s abduction. Nearly three weeks after Pugh’s call, volunteers from Chesterfield searching for Graham discovered human remains near an abandoned property. The site was right around where the landscaper had spotted the birds . “I wish it could have happened faster, but it couldn’t,” lamented Pugh. “They were getting 200-300 tips a day, my tip couldn’t be the one on the top.” Regardless, Pugh is heartbroken by what happened to Graham. “That’s not the way anyone should be left,” Pugh said. The state medical examiner’s office in Richmond conducted forensic tests on the remains to identify them, and reportedly did so just moments ago. Matthew is being held on charges of abducting her with the intent to defile, and was charged Monday with attempted murder, abduction and sexual assault in a 2005 case.

James Hetfield of Metallica filmed a PSA and the band has offered a large reward to the public in solving the murder of Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington. Harrington went missing following the heavy metal band’s October 9, 2009, concert in Charlottesville, Va. Her skeletal remains turned up three months later. The PSA is meant to assist the FBI and Virginia State Police in gathering tips that could aid them in identifying a man whom they believe to be a suspect. Metallica PSA “Back in 2010, our band offered $50,000 to help catch the person responsible for murdering Morgan Harrington,” says Hetfield. “Since that time authorities have uncovered new evidence linking her killer to a similar assault to a woman in Virginia.” The video included police sketches. Hetfield pleaded for anyone who may know the individual or have information on the case to contact authorities. “Remember, any information, no matter how small you might think it is, could be that crucial piece investigators need to help solve the case,” he said. There is now a $150,000 reward, including Metallica’s original $50,000. Harrington, a 20-year-old aspiring teacher, was last seen hitchhiking after she left the John Paul Jones Arena where the group was playing that night. Her body was discovered in January 2010. DNA recovered has since been linked to an unknown offender who attacked a woman in Fairfax City in 2005. Anyone with tips can call the Virginia State Police at 434-352-3467.
