Lady Gaga’s New Album Will Be ‘Insane’

‘Look out for the unexpected when it comes to her,’ Gaga’s co-manager says of the follow-up to Born This Way. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Jason Kempin/ Getty Images If there’s one positive that Lady Gaga fans can take from her decision to cancel a June 3 concert in Indonesia , perhaps it’s this: at least she’ll have more time to work on her album. Yes, though she’s currently in the midst of a two-year world tour, Gaga is already hard at work on the follow-up to 2011’s Born This Way and, according to her co-manager, she’s going to push the boundaries even further this time around (which is sure to please those Indonesian Islamic groups ). “There’s a lot of work to come, [I’m] very excited about it,” Vincent Herbert revealed in a new interview with website That Grape Juice. “[It’s] just [an] insane, great record. She’s on tour right now, but it’s just going to be a great record. Look out for the unexpected when it comes to her. We’re doing it on the road right now, so it’s a little hard, but it’s going to be great.” Herbert wouldn’t reveal specifics — tentative release date, title, who she’s been working with, etc. — about the new album, but the news that she’s recording on the road is actually in keeping with the way she began work on Born This Way, when standout tracks like “Marry The Night” took shape with producer Fernando Garibay during her long-running Monster Ball Tour. “I just kind of got on the American leg of the tour … and she goes, ‘I want to write another song that can define where I’m at with this album and my life,’ ” Garibay told MTV News last year. “I go back to the studio bus; I’m just working on parts … and then, two hours later, she comes offstage and she goes, ‘Do you have something to play me?’ And I go, ‘I do, actually.’ “So I played her the instrumental for ‘Marry the Night,’ and she goes, ‘Open up a mic,’ ” Garibay continued. “She starts laying down the whole song, like, off the cuff … right off the stage, using the energy of that crowd and going into the studio, it was amazing. I can’t compare it to anything.” What do you hope the Born This Way follow-up will sound like? Tell us in the comments section! Related Artists Lady Gaga

The Bridesmaids Vs. Ryan Gosling: Who Wrenched Your Guts?

Five cringe-worthy scenes vie for the Best Gut-Wrenching Performance at the MTV Movie Awards. Vote for your pick on MTV.com! By Kara Warner Ryan Gosling in “Drive” Photo: FilmDistrict Of all the unique and outlandish categories that the MTV Movie Awards have been known for each year, 2012’s new addition, Best Gut-Wrenching Performance , might be the most unique, outlandish and downright cringe-worthy of all. So what is a gut-wrenching moment? For our purposes, it is that one unforgettable scene in a recent movie that was so outrageous, disturbing or just plain gross that you had a physical reaction whilst watching it. A literal wrenching of your guts. No matter your reaction to this year’s very diverse nominees, be it the poo pies, head stomping or group food poisoning, we can almost guarantee the nominated moments in this new category left an impression on you. Here’s a closer look at those five gut-wrenching movie moments: Bryce Dallas-Howard, “The Help” For those who’ve seen “The Help,” there’s not much to say about this other than revenge is best served cold, in the form of a poo-laced pie. In the scene, Dallas-Howard — a double nominee this year — who plays the cringe-worthy and hateful villain Hilly Holbrook, scarfs down what looks to be a delicious chocolate pie. Hilly and the audience soon find out that the pie has an extra “special” ingredient: poop. Jonah Hill and Rob Riggle, “21 Jump Street” Moving on to our next nominee, from poop to a detached penis. (Did we mention these moments are gut-wrenching?) In the final few minutes of one of the year’s funniest comedies, “21 Jump Street,” Jonah Hill accidentally shoots off Rob Riggle’s penis, after which the handcuffed and injured party is forced to retrieve his dismembered man parts with his mouth. Bonus fact about this scene: Riggle improvised the mouth pick-up . Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Ellie Kemper, “Bridesmaids” While there are multiple memorable scenes in “Bridesmaids,” one of them stands out as the messiest. While shopping at a swanky boutique for their dresses, the bride and her five bridesmaids are simultaneously hit with a tidal wave of food poisoning that causes them to lose their lunch in every conceivable way. Ryan Gosling, “Drive” While Ryan Gosling made many women swoon with his wooing of Emma Stone in “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” his turn as the cold, calculated and deadly driver in “Drive” had the opposite effect. Gosling’s most gut-wrenching scene is a furious display of skull stomping never before seen on film. Talk about cringe-worthy, that elevator stomp is off the charts. Tom Cruise, “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” This last nominated moment is the least gross of the bunch and also the most impressive given the physical feat achieved to produce it. In “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” Tom Cruise’s super spy Ethan Hunt scales the planet’s tallest building, Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, in a race against a nuclear clock. Cruise actually performed the stunt, which required him to dangle a mere 2,700 feet from the ground. Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! Justin Bieber To Star In First Prime-Time Network Special

‘Justin Bieber Believe: All Around The World” will air on NBC on June 21. By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber Photo: Getty Images He’s conquered the charts, the Internet and arenas all around the world, so it just makes sense that Justin Bieber is bringing his swag to prime-time. The “Boyfriend” singer will star in his first network special on June 21 when NBC airs “Justin Bieber Believe: All Around the World.” The hour-long show will give Beliebers a behind-the-scenes look at Justin’s global promotional tour in support of his upcoming Believe album, using a combination of documentary and music performance footage. “We’re thrilled to air Justin Bieber’s first network special,” said Doug Vaughan, SVP of Special Programs and Late Night for NBC in a statement announcing the show, which will air from 8-9 p.m. ET/PT. “We’ll have unprecedented access to Justin as our cameras film not only his performances, but his every move on this global tour — giving our viewers an all access pass to his life over a 12-day period, something rarely seen on TV today.” Viewers will get a unique perspective on Bieber’s grinding schedule on the seven-country, 12-day promo tour thanks to the “Justin-cam,” which will show fans the madness from his perspective. The whirlwind tour will culminate with a special concert performance in New York City. Bieber dropped a new single this week, “Die in Your Arms,”
which laces his pop attack with bits of Motown harmonies and producer Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins’ signature funky beats. The song’s vintage swing, finger snaps and melodies certainly recall the heyday of feel-good R&B from the 1960s, which is mirrored in the song’s sentiment. On the chorus, Bieber sings, “Honestly, the truth is, if I could just die in your arms/ I wouldn’t mind/ ‘Cause every time you touch me/ I just die in your arms/ It feels so right/ So baby, baby, baby, please don’t stop girl.” “Die” is the follow-up to the more pop-‘n’-b-leaning “Boyfriend,”
which he dropped back in March. Last week he released a remix to the song , featuring 2 Chainz, Mac Miller and Asher Roth, which certainly ups the song’s hip-hop ante quite a bit. “And we can be like Selena and Biebs/ Wild and free, a couple disobedient teens/ Sneaking out to meet like two o’ clock in the eve/ Paparazzi ain’t a problem, we just hide on the beach,” Roth spits on the track. Kimbra Renews Her Vows For Stateside Release

New Zealand-born singer says her 2011 album has ‘gone through a bit of an evolution’ for its May 22 release in the U.S. By Jocelyn Vena Kimbra Photo: MTV News Kimbra has already topped the charts as Gotye’s former love on his smash hit “Somebody That I Used To Know.” This week, the New Zealand-born songstress will finally release her genre-defying Vows in the U.S. The album, which incorporates dance, pop and alternative, will be released on May 22. And despite the fact that Kimbra’s “lived for these songs for nearly five years,” she found a way to renew her Vows by featuring five new songs on the Stateside release. “It kind of feels like it’s gone through a bit of an evolution,” she told MTV News. “For that reason, I feel refreshed going out to promote it. It still feels new.” In order to freshen up the album, she enlisted the help of some legendary producers, including Greg Kurstin (who’s worked with the Flaming Lips and the Shins) and Mike Elizondo (who worked with Dr. Dre). “I just think you learn a process that works for you,” she said. “I think I took a lot from the first few years of making Vows and then when I came here to work in America, I knew the ways I like to work.” Kimbra said she’s enjoyed exploring different genres on the new tracks, including girl-power anthem “Warrior” with A-Track and Mark Foster as well as the funky “Come Into My Head.” “It channels a bit of a funk thing, which is something I’m dabbling in more now with the live band,” she said of “Come Into My Head.” “It’s got a lot of syncopation and quite a heavy groove, so, I think, maybe that’s a new direction for me to start exploring on the second album, perhaps.” Related Artists Kimbra

Bee Gees’ Robin Gibb Dead At 62

Singer had battled colon and liver cancer and lapsed into a coma last month. By Katie Byrne Robin Gibb in 1976 Photo: Richard E. Aaron/ Redferns/ Getty Images Bee Gees member Robin Gibb died Sunday (May 20) after a long battle with cancer; he was 62 years old. “The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away today following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery,” read a statement confirming the news. “The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time.” Gibb, who had been battling colon and liver cancer, lapsed into a weeklong coma last month. In February, doctors said he’d made a “spectacular” recovery from the disease, but he was soon back in the hospital for surgery. The “Saturday Night Fever” singer had bowel surgery almost two years ago for an unrelated condition, at which time doctors discovered a tumor and diagnosed him with colon cancer. It appeared as if the cancer was in remission as recently as March. Robin was one-third of the Brothers Gibb, alongside lead singer Barry and twin brother Maurice, who died in 2003 from complications of abdominal surgery. The siblings created the Bee Gees as teens in Brisbane, Australia, in 1958. They made their initial impact on pop during the Beatles-led British invasion of the mid-’60s, sending “New York Mining Disaster 1941” into the top 20 and beginning a string of hits that would last through 1972’s “Run to Me.” The ’71 smash “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” reached the top of the charts. The Bee Gees’ style shifted during the disco era, and their success with funky, dance-oriented pieces such as “Jive Talkin'” and “You Should Be Dancing” set them up for the pop juggernaut of Saturday Night Fever. With falsetto vocals and irresistible rhythms, the trio became one of disco’s most resonant symbols. Three Bee Gees songs from the film’s soundtrack, “How Deep Is Your Love,” “Stayin’ Alive” and “Night Fever,” reached #1 on the Billboard chart. The Saturday Night Fever album is pop’s best-selling soundtrack, having moved over 40 million copies. Please share your condolences for Gibb’s family, friends and fans in the comments. Phillip Phillips And Joshua Ledet: Let’s Hope They Don’t Win ‘American Idol’

The track record for male winners on ‘Idol’ is spotty at best, and not promising for either man. By Gil Kaufman Joshua Ledet and Phillip Phillips on “American Idol” Photo: FOX When it comes to “American Idol” , sometimes the only way to win is to lose. In general, the show has a checkered history of creating superstars, with only two winners who could legitimately claim that title: season one’s Kelly Clarkson and season four’s Carrie Underwood. But until last season’s anomalous Scotty McCreery (you kind of have to give him a pass because he’s a country star and that’s a whole different audience than the more fickle pop/R&B one), the show’s track record when it comes to male winners
has been pretty dismal. We bring this up because either Phillip Phillips or Joshua Ledet, or possibly both of them, will be in the “Idol” season 11 finale in two weeks. Both men have carved their own unique lanes and deserve a shot at the title, but unlike McCreery, at this point, neither of those lanes screams “platinum star.” Phillips has clearly skated through the contest on his good looks, earnest, “aw, shucks” demeanor, gritty vocals and did we mention how cute he is? But his foot stomping, growling Dave Matthews Lite sound is hardly the kind that is tearing up the charts these days. It’s also hard to imagine all those squealing girl fans rushing out to buy a moody, jammy CD of introspective acoustic ballads seven months from now. Similarly, Ledet has earned a legion of fans for his soaring, church-bred brand of old school soul. He has rightfully earned his praise, but his Al Green/Otis Redding delivery is an anachronism . Just ask Ray Charles impersonator and season five winner Taylor Hicks. Unless mentor Jimmy Iovine and his crew can figure out a way to pull a Bruno Mars on Ledet and make him seem contemporary, he could end up like Hicks, who followed his platinum debut by being dropped a year later by Arista Records and then plummeting into obscurity. Hicks isn’t alone among “Idol”‘s male winners, either. Season two champ Ruben Studdard rushed out of the gate with a smash debut in 2003, then followed with a poor-selling gospel album, a flop return to R&B form third effort and then, yes, a separation from his label and difficulty getting his swag back since. Though he appeared on Wednesday night’s show playing his new single, season seven champ David Cook has also gone from a platinum-selling debut to a second album that barely sold 120,000 and then being dropped from his deal. The jury is still out on season eight winner Kris Allen. The first-week sales for his self-titled 2009 debut were the lowest-ever at that point for an “Idol” champ at barely 80,000, topping out just shy of 330,000. Allen’s second major-label album, Thank You Camellia , is due out later this month. The biggest cautionary tale of a cute male singer with a very specific sound and a seemingly inflexible will to do things their way is season nine winner Lee DeWyze. With a similarly low-key persona and guitar-strumming delivery, DeWyze set the new low bar for male “Idol” winner when his debut, Live It Up had the worst-selling first week ever for a champ (39,000), then fell 74 slots in week two before completely disappearing a short time later after selling less than 170,000 copies. He was, not surprisingly, let go by his label
a short time later and has been off the radar ever since. Season 10 winner McCreery has turned things around, with a platinum debut and strong support from the country community, but with Ledet and Phillips unable to county on the loyalty of country fans to boost their post-“Idol” careers, they won’t have the same built-in fanbase McCreery tapped into. It’s worth noting that even though female winners such as Fantasia and Jordin Sparks have not always reached the heights of Clarkson and Underwood, no female “Idol” winner has ever been dropped by her major label. Do you think Phillips and Ledet have a chance at turning around the “Idol” male curse? Let us know in comments below. Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Related Photos ‘American Idol’ Season 11 Performances
