‘X Factor’: Why Isn’t It As Huge As ‘American Idol’?

One writer makes the case for why you should be watching Simon Cowell’s latest import. By Gil Kaufman, with additional reporting by Jim Cantiello “X Factor” judge Simon Cowell Photo: Ian Derry / FOX Imagine a reality competition that mixes the drama of “Dancing With the Stars,” the variety-show feel of “America’s Got Talent,” the weekly singing battles of “American Idol” and the cutthroat competition between celebrity judges of “The Voice.” That would be amazing, right? Well, guess what? It exists, and it’s called “The X Factor.” But chances are you’re not watching it. Simon Cowell’s bid to make “Factor” the new “Idol” hasn’t taken off as quickly as he brashly predicted earlier this year. The show is pulling in a solid 9-plus million viewers per night, which is about half of the 20 million Simon promised. But Nielsen recently reported that the strong ratings helped the Fox Network — which also airs “Idol” — win the November “sweeps” period among the coveted 18-29 demo by grabbing the top spot among unscripted programs. And yet, even as “Factor” drills down to its final seven contestants this week, the show has failed to develop that must-see-TV aura that “Idol” has enjoyed for nearly a decade. After covering “Idol” for nine seasons, I was exceedingly reluctant to take on yet another musical competition show, but somehow “Factor” has wormed its way into my TiVo and I’ve become a major fan. So in case you haven’t been watching, here’s what I think you’ve been missing: Stars Forget for a moment that Cowell remains the biggest name in reality-TV judging, or that he recruited his Paul McCartney — Paula Abdul — to join him on the judging panel. So far, the show has hosted eye-popping performances from Willow Smith, Jessie J, Rihanna, Kelly Clarkson, Bruno Mars and, this week, Tinie Tempah. Yes, “Idol” also lands big names, but it’s often saddled with giving up prime-time slots to snoozy former winners and finalists like Constantine Maroulis, Crystal Bowersox and David Cook, whose careers have not exactly set the charts on fire. The Stage If nothing else elevates “Factor” above “Idol” or “The Voice,” it’s the elaborate, over-the-top staging. “Idol” pulls out the big guns for the finale, but from the very first live show, “Factor” has been giving us VMA/Grammy-worthy production numbers complete with backup dancers, constantly varying sets and a massive video-screen-covered stage that makes each performance feel like an event. The craftsmanship is so bombastic at times that it’s easy to forget that you’re essentially watching nobodies on a game show. Watch the remaining “X Factor” finalists explain what makes their show so unique. Variety Because of the format (which includes groups, boys, girls and over 30’s), so far this season we’ve seen rappers, country groups, pop stars, boy bands, R&B crooners and hip-hop/soul hybrids on “Factor.” Quality While “Idol” has struggled over the past few seasons to launch a bona fide star and has frequently been saddled with top 12 groupings larded with substandard singers, almost without exception, the acts that made it to the live shows on “Factor” had some legitimate commercial potential. From such eliminated groups as New Jack revivalists Stereo Hogzz to manufactured country act Lakoda Rayne and soul singer LeRoy Bell, even the early castoffs from “Factor” have a legitimate shot at making it in the industry. Add in such easily packaged finalists as cutie diva Rachel Crow, next Chris Brown-type Marcus Canty, power vocalist Melanie Amaro and hip-hop tween Astro and you have a top seven silly with possible future stars. And I’ll put former-addict rapper/crooner Chris Rene up against Lee DeWyze any day. Judges As much as we hate to love him, Cowell really is the best at this, and his banter with a more subdued Abdul was missed. Add into the mix opinionated, no-BS veteran music man L.A. Reid and weepy ex-Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger and you have a panel that is fun to watch and quick to scrap. With each judge competing against each other as well, you also get some seemingly legitimate sniping and griping among them that adds more drama to the show. And who can forget Abdul’s painfully long on-air near breakdown when pressed by annoying host to Steve Jones to choose between two of her groups during week three? Drama With all of that going on, producers have also ceaselessly hammered the rich backstories of the contestants, from fresh-out-of-rehab young dad Chris Rene and shockingly overconfident Brooklyn teen MC Astro to formerly homeless soul rocker Dexter Haygood and scrappy 13-year-old Crow. The white-knuckle moments each week when the judges are forced to potentially toss one of their own overboard — not to mention back-to-back double-elimination episodes — amps up the drama even more. “It shows people’s lives, it shows who they are … it shows what they’re about, what they represent,” finalist Rene told MTV News. “It doesn’t just show an artist or a singer. They go into your life and they’re like, ‘So who are you? What are you about? What do you do?’ … If I wasn’t me, and I was watching the show and I’d seen all the stuffs that’s going on with all the different contestants, I would be like, ‘Wow this is crazy! What’s going on here? What is this? Did they set this up? Like, is this real?’ ” Have you been watching “X Factor”? Share your thoughts in the comments below! Makin’ It Rain On Them Hoes: Lil Wayne’s Carter IV Is Certified Double Platinum

Maybe the Throne should watch Weezy. Even though Drake’s album just dropped and people are out copping it in waves, they’re still also buying Weezy’s Carter IV . It looks like that whole tight jeggings thing he did at the VMAs before dropping the album finally paid off. Weezy still stands head and shoulders above any other rap release and looks to be the top selling album of 2011. This has actually been a stellar year overall for Weezy and Young Money. Nicki’s album is still selling. Drake’s sophomore album is topping the charts and they just added Busta Rhymes to the fold. It looks like 2012 will be just as hot. YMCMB is winning, whether we like it or not.

Chris Brown Buys Mansion Near Rihanna’s Home

R&B star’s new Hollywood bachelor pad is just miles away from his ex’s house, which she recently put up for sale. By Jason Kaufman Chris Brown Photo: Getty Images After a successful year on the charts, Chris Brown has decided to make some more noise, this time on the real estate market. Radar Online is reporting that Brown has snatched up a mansion in the Hollywood Hills for a cool $1.5 million. The price tag on the home is not the only eye-opening detail: When Brown moves in, he’ll be just miles away from his ex Rihanna . According to listings site Zillow.com , Brown’s new digs went on the market back in 2009 for $2.6 million but dropped by over $1 million by the time the singer snatched it up in October. Brown’s new home is eight miles from Rihanna’s front door. But they won’t be so close for long. She recently put her eight-bedroom Beverly Crest home on the market for $4.5 million, which, according to real estate site Blockshopper.com, is far above the average $1.35 million asking price for homes in her neighborhood. Brown had been on the search for a new location since the spring, when, according to Radar , residents in his West Hollywood community complained about his loud lifestyle. Those complaints might have been a blessing as they opened the door for Brown to score a major deal on the market with the mansion’s reduced price tag. The three-bedroom, three-bathroom bachelor pad is listed at 2473 square feet and, according to The Daily Mail, includes an elevator to go along with its outdoor pool, sleek modern patio and living room with two stories of windows. Chris Brown rocked the American Music Awards on Sunday night. Watch his performance ! Related Artists Chris Brown

Kelly Clarkson Announces Stronger Tour Dates

Singer will hit the road with opener Matt Nathanson in January. By Gil Kaufman Kelly Clarkson Photo: MTV News Kelly Clarkson won’t have much time to nurse her New Year’s Eve hangover, as she’s slated to hit the road in early January for the first North American leg of her world tour in support of Stronger. The trek will kick off on January 13 with a show in Mashantucket, Connecticut, and is currently slated to run through an April 10 date at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, California. Clarkson — whose fifth album recently landed a #2 debut on the Billboard 200 albums chart — will be joined by singer/songwriter Matt Nathanson on the outing. Though she came in behind Coldplay during her first week in stores, Clarkson was more than happy to square off against the British group for chart supremacy. “My album came out this week, Coldplay came out at the same time, and people were like, ‘Oh my God, are you kidding? Coldplay is going to kill you!’ I don’t care if they kill me,” Clarkson told MTV News of the rock band, whose Mylo Xyloto topped the charts with 447,000 copies sold. “It’s more like, how many people are going to buy their album, and then my album is right there, ’cause it’s out too,” she said. “I always think competition is healthy.” She’s not sweating it, since Clarkson has already said that she feels Stronger is her best album to date. She’s now getting ready to drop the second single off the LP, “What Doesn’t Kill You (Stronger).” “I think we might be going with ‘Stronger,’ the title track,” Clarkson said. “It’s just a great song, so I think we might go with that one.” As a bonus, Clarkson also expects that the song will be a blast to play in concert. ” ‘What Doesn’t Kill You,’ I can’t wait to perform that live,” said the singer. “We’ve already rehearsed it, and it’s so much fun. It’s like this big dance anthem.” Tickets for the tour will go on sale November 18. Dates for Kelly Clarkson’s Stronger tour:

Kelly Clarkson Thinks Coldplay Competition Is ‘Healthy’

‘People were like, ‘Oh my God, are you kidding? Coldplay is going to kill you!’ Stronger singer tells MTV News of Billboard face-off. By Christina Garibaldi Kelly Clarkson Photo: MTV News Kelly Clarkson ‘s fifth studio album, Stronger , landed her at the #2 spot on the Billboard album chart, selling 163,000 copies in its first week. While her first-week sales may have been softer than what Clarkson had hoped for, when the former “American Idol” winner sat down with MTV News on Friday, she acknowledged that she had some fierce release competition in Coldplay . But she had a refreshingly positive take on the matchup. “My album came out this week, Coldplay came out at the same time, and people were like, ‘Oh my God, are you kidding? Coldplay is going to kill you!’ I don’t care if they kill me,” Clarkson said of the rock band, whose Mylo Xyloto topped the charts with 447,000 copies sold. “It’s more like, how many people are going to buy their album, and then my album is right there, ’cause it’s out too,” she said. “I always think competition is healthy.” Clarkson, who told us she thinks Stronger is her “best album” to date, is now prepping the second single off the LP, “What Doesn’t Kill You (Stronger).” “I think we might be going with ‘Stronger,’ the title track.” Clarkson revealed. “It’s just a great song, so I think we might go with that one.” Much like the first single off the album, “Mr. Know It All,” “What Doesn’t Kill You (Stronger)” is a powerful breakup anthem somewhat reminiscent of “Since U Been Gone.” ” ‘What Doesn’t Kill You,’ I can’t wait to perform that live,” the singer, who plans to tour in January, told us recently. “We’ve already rehearsed it, and it’s so much fun. It’s like this big dance anthem.” As much fun as “What Doesn’t Kill You (Stronger)” will be to perform, Clarkson says another song takes the top spot on her list of favorite songs off her latest album. ” ‘You Love Me,’ that’s my favorite,” she said. “Even before I wrote a song to it, the track is just unbelievably cool. It doesn’t sound like anything else that’s out right now. It’s very like Prince, Tina Turner, but nowadays; it’s more contemporary. And the message of the song, too, I love that, the fact that saying like, ‘Your love feels like a punch in the face.’ I just think it’s a fun song.” Share your review of Stronger in the comments! Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto Tops Billboard

Kelly Clarkson’s Stronger comes in at a distant #2. By Gil Kaufman Coldplay’s fifth studio album, Mylo Xyloto Photo: Parlophone Records Coldplay can be as self-deprecating as they want, but the fact remains that they are one of the biggest rock bands in the world. They proved it when their fifth album, Mylo Xyloto, moved more than 447,000 copies in its first week on the charts, according to Nielsen SoundScan, notching the third-highest Billboard 200 debut of 2011 behind Lady Gaga and Lil Wayne. In a testament to their chart prowess, in addition to snagging their third consecutive #1 debut, the band’s previous four albums are back on the charts as well, down in the mid-50s and 60s. The group has referred to Mylo Xyloto — which features a cameo from Rihanna on “Princess of China” — as “schizophrenic” thanks to the wide range of sounds it explores. Coldplay’s first-week showing was more than enough to keep Kelly Clarkson from hitting the top of the charts in the debut week of her latest album, Stronger, which is a distant #2 on sales of 163,000. Clarkson is back doing what she does best on the disc: writing awesomely powerful pop breakup anthems like “Mr. Know It All.” She told MTV News that she particularly likes that “feisty” single, since it is so “in your face.” Crooner Michael Bubl

Evanescence ‘Thrilled’ By #1 Billboard Debut

‘We made an album we’re really proud of and now we get to watch it fly,’ Amy Lee tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Amy Lee of Evanescence Photo: MTV News On Wednesday (October 19), Evanescence officially completed their comeback when it was announced that their self-titled third album would top next week’s Billboard albums chart , with sales of more than 127,000 copies. It’s the band’s second-consecutive #1 debut: As any Ev fan surely knows, their last was five years ago, when The Open Door bowed atop the charts in 2006. And in the time since, they’ve shed members, gone on a hiatus and, as frontwoman Amy Lee told MTV News , very nearly called it quits entirely. So you can certainly understand why Lee and her bandmates are feeling so happy today. In an e-mail to MTV News, the singer decided to share a bit of that happiness with us and with Evanescence’s fanbase. “What can I say, we’re thrilled about it!” she wrote. “We made an album that we’re really proud of and now we get to watch it fly. We weren’t expecting this and we’re just so grateful to our fans.” It’s certainly been a long road back. After coming back together, Evanescence holed up with producer Nick Raskulinecz in Nashville and unveiled the fruits of that labor to MTV News in July. They then premiered the first single, “What You Want,” live on MTV in August and played a raucous release-day show in Los Angeles last week. They’ll play a run of U.S. and U.K. shows until early November, and, armed with a #1 album, they’re planning a full-blown Stateside tour in early January.
