Trey Songz Says Passion, Pain & Pleasure Scales ‘New Heights’

Passion, Pain & Pleasure is propelled by 2009 ‘defining album,’ Ready, Trigger tells MTV News. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Trey Songz Photo: Atlantic Records Trey Songz has established himself as a beloved R&B artist , but the singer said it wasn’t until his last project, Ready, that he began to feel like he had ascended to star status. “I definitely feel that that album was what I thought it was. Before even the masses got it or anybody heard it, I felt like it was a defining album in an artist’s career,” he told MTV News. “Because even before that album, I had a couple hits, I had top 10 records, but those were songs. I had hit songs but I wasn’t a hit artist. But right now people know my name and right now I feel like with Ready being so successful, I felt that was me only scratching the surface of my potential. That was almost the beginning of my career, if you will. With his latest release, Passion, Pain & Pleasure, Trey takes another big leap forward. Songz’ first two offerings are already heating up at radio and on the charts. “Bottoms Up,” featuring Nicki Minaj, sits in the top 20 on Billboard ‘s Hot 100 and “Unusual,” featuring Drake , appears primed to follow suit. “With Passion, Pain & Pleasure, I feel like I’m taking it to new heights,” Songz said of his fourth studio album. After dropping Ready in summer 2009, the singer upgraded his management team to include former Warner Music and Def Jam executive Kevin Liles. The move, Songz said, was just another example of him taking greater control of his career. “As far as what I can attribute my success to, you know, taking charge of my career,” he said. “Taking full control — from the music I make to the pictures I take.” What do you think of Trey Songz’ new album? Eminem’s ‘Not Afraid’ Comeback Video Pulls Him Back From The Edge

The Shady One lands squarely on his feet in VMA Video of the Year-nominated clip. By Jayson Rodriguez Eminem Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage Eminem was on edge after the release of his Relapse album, his first project after a five-year layoff during which he battled depression and drug dependency. The stakes were high for the Shady One, and although Relapse landed atop the charts — and scored the biggest-selling rap release of 2009 — the heralded Detroit lyricist received lukewarm reviews for the collection. So yes, he was back but, in a sense, he hadn’t quite made his return. But then he unleashed a vicious freestyle while visiting Tim Westwood in the U.K., and followed that up with his dominating verse on Drake’s superstar-laden “Forever” collabo. Ahead of the release of Recovery, Em dropped his official comeback anthem, the reflective “Not Afraid.” With the “Not Afraid” video , he cemented his comeback. The clip has earned Eminem three heavy-duty 2010 MTV Video Music Award nominations : Best Male Video, Best Hip-Hop Video, and Video of the Year. Directed by Rich Lee, the clip balances the darkness of Eminem’s struggle with flashes of light that ultimately lift the rapper to new heights. The video opens with Em standing on the edge of nondescript office building. As he begins his rhymes, the video quickly cuts back and forth between Em spitting on top of the building and in the bowels of a dark basement. “You can try and read my lyrics off of this paper before I lay ’em,” he raps. “But you won’t take this thing out these words before I say ’em/ ‘Cause ain’t no way I’mma let you stop me from causing mayhem/ When I say ’em or do something I do it, I don’t give a damn.” Filmed in Newark, New Jersey, Eminem ventures from the basement to the busy streets of Brick City and crosses a dense multilane street. It’s almost as if the heavy-traffic crossing symbolizes Eminem’s clouded mind during his darker days. He makes it across the street and later bursts through a broken window to his personal light. The visual is a stirring narrative and culminates with Eminem flying up in the air, landing on top of the building from the beginning of the clip. He’s no longer on the edge, but overlooking his new beginning. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday. Katy Perry Plans ‘Larger Than Life’ Teenage Dream Videos

Pop star wants tour around the album to be a ‘massive production.’ By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Capitol Katy Perry soared to the top of the charts with her just-released second album, Teenage Dream, but don’t expect the pop star to sit around and count her dough now that she’s avoided the sophomore slump . She has big plans for the album, including a tour and “larger than life” music videos to follow in the footsteps of the clips for “California Gurls” and “Teenage Dream.” “I guess I’m looking forward to making music videos on this new album … and I’m really excited about incorporating the look and the idea of some of the songs on tour and making a massive production of it,” she said. “I’m gonna want a lot of visuals. I want it to be 10 times better than when I was on tour last.” She said this album shows her growth as an artist since releasing her debut One of the Boys, and she hopes to capture that visually. “This record is more important, as important, if not more important than the first record,” she said. “This one will really show if it was all by chance that the first one happened, which I strongly don’t believe. But I think I have to work just as hard and show people that there is a visual element. There’s a story to the songs. … I’m really excited about going on tour again and giving out those hugs and not handshakes and making those music videos that are going to be larger than life.” Calling the album a “perfect snapshot” of her life now, she said she has one major goal for it: “My ultimate goal is just to make people feel with music. I think that’s really important, the power of music, and hopefully people can hear that displayed in this record, but like I said, it’s not like anything I’m not. … It definitely has a little bit more spice to it.” Perry tweeted her excitement about the record’s success, thanking fans for helping it reach the top of the charts. “Before I purr off to dreamland I want to say THANK YOU! Thank you so much for my FIRST #1 RECORD DEBUT! I couldn’t have done it without YOU,” she wrote. “YAY CUPCAKES FOR EVERYONEEEEEEEEEE! #1TEENAGEDREAMDEBUT!” Are you excited for more videos from Teenage Dream ? Let us know in the comments! Taylor Swift Opens Up About ‘Mine’ Wedding Scene

On a special doc about making the video, Swift also explains why she picked co-star Toby Hemingway. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift Photo: CMT When fans check out the video for Taylor Swift’s “Mine,” they will be quick to notice how fetching she looks in a wedding dress. And while she only donned the garment for the clip, directed by Roman White, that scene is what had everyone buzzing long before the video even premiered. “The video is a story of a relationship,” Swift told CMT in the half-hour special that airs Friday night (August 27) at 8 p.m. ET, before the video’s premiere on MTV, CMT and VH1. “It really tells the story of these two people and the things that they go through and their life together. “The wedding scene in the video is the thing that’s been talked most about because someone got a picture of it when we were shooting it,” she continued, “but I think you’ll find there’s a lot in the video. That may just be one part of it.” Swift also excitedly dished on her co-star, Toby Hemingway from the upcoming “Black Swan.” “I picked him because he’s in one of my favorite movies, ‘Feast of Love,’ ” Swift said. “In another movie that he was in, he walks onscreen for the first time, and he had a ’13’ on his sweatshirt, and that’s my lucky number,” she revealed. “So it really wasn’t me that cast him. It was my lucky number.” So far, fans have been eating up the single, causing it to spike to the top of the charts since its leak and subsequent release earlier this month. “I got on a plane, I landed in Japan, and it was No. 1 on iTunes. And when I got on the plane, I had no intention of having a single out until two weeks from now,” she said. “It just ended up so wonderful, and I’m really appreciative of the fans for jumping right on it.” Swift’s fans will have more to be excited about come October, when she releases her album Speak Now . “I put everything I had into this album for the last two years, so for it to have a great little start, it really makes me happy,” she said. “Making this album has been such a wonderful experience, and I’m really excited to roll out the first single and the first video.” Related Artists Taylor Swift

Katy Perry, Fantasia Look To Unseat Eminem On Charts

Perry’s Teenage Dream expected to take top spot from Recovery. By Gil Kaufman Katy Perry Photo: Chelsea Lauren/ FilmMagic It’s been a long, record-setting summer for Eminem’s smash Recovery , but Slim Shady’s chart dominance could be challenged next week by two strong women with something to prove. Em’s held the #1 spot on the album charts for seven of the nine weeks Recovery has been in stores, with its other two weeks spent at #2. But he could be pushed down to the #3 position next week thanks to the debuts of Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream and Fantasia’s Back to Me , according to a Billboard . Citing unnamed “industry prognosticators,” the trade pub put Perry on track to sell between 170,000 and 200,000 copies of Teenage Dream by the end of this week’s reporting period on Sunday (August 29). Fantasia, meanwhile, is on target for a #2 bow and sales in the 120,000-140,000 range. This week, Eminem had little major competition, and he was able to hold on to the #1 slot with 116,000 sales of Recovery . For Perry, the debut would easily best the chart arrival of her breakthrough 2008 effort One of the Boys , which debuted on the charts and peaked at #9 with 47,000 sales; it went on to sell more than one million copies in the U.S. and seven million worldwide. Perry is looking to both beat the sophomore slump and cement her status as one of the world’s pop icons. A #2 debut would also be a high-water mark for Fantasia, who has struggled through a difficult period lately that included a suicide attempt and tabloid headlines regarding her relationship with a man in the midst of a divorce. If the former “American Idol” champ snags the #2 spot it would mark the best chart debut of her career, though her previous album, Fantasia , sold 133,000 copies when it reached #19 spot in 2006. While numbers were not available at press time, it’s even possible that Slim Shady could get a bit of a run from Usher, whose new EP, Versus , also dropped this week. Simon Cowell’s ‘X Factor’ Embroiled In Auto-Tune Controversy

Spokesperson for British reality show admits that contestants’ vocals were enhanced. By Gil Kaufman Photo: ITV There were plenty of times during the lackluster recent season of “American Idol” when fans probably wished producers would allow the weaker finalists to Auto-Tune their shaky vocals. Maybe they should be watching England’s “X Factor” instead. A major scandal is brewing over revelations that the show enhanced the vocals of some contestants during Saturday’s season premiere, with some of the very obviously tweaked vocals so clumsily edited they could have been included on a T-Pain single. According to BBC News , a spokesperson for the show — created and produced by former “Idol” judge Simon Cowell (who is bringing it to the U.S. in 2011) — admitted that post-production work was done on some of the singers’ vocals because of interference caused by the number of microphones used during filming. One of the most obvious enhancements was made to contestant Gamu Nhengu’s take on Katrina and the Waves’ iconic “Walking on Sunshine,” during which her vocals are very clearly massaged to keep her in key. The post-production face-lift was almost laughable during singer Shirlena Johnson’s cover of Duffy’s “Mercy,” which had her struggling to stay in tune even amid heavy-handed studio trickery. “The judges make their decisions at the auditions stage based on what they hear on the day, live in the arena,” the spokesman explained about the enhancements added after Saturday’s first program, which was viewed by more than 11 million people. “The footage and sound is then edited and dubbed into a finished program, to deliver the most entertaining experience possible for viewers. When it gets to the live shows, it will be all live.” The revelation has resulted in a raft of complaints by angry fans, who felt cheated after Cowell told Nhengu that she was “really talented,” which helped her advance to the next round. One contestant who reached the live finals last year slammed the show for trying to deceive fans. Daniel Evans wrote on his Twitter page, “I am big campaigner against auto-tune in the music industry, it’s all over the charts but to hear it on a so-called live show is just plain sad. … It’s like an epidemic, and I won’t be watching again. Sad times for real music fans.” According to England’s Daily Mirror, the vocal trickery expands well beyond the initial audition rounds, with one former unnamed production staffer saying, “It was an open secret on the show that Auto-Tune was used to both make contestants slightly more on-key or off-key. On some occasions it was used to such extremes that while the contestant may have sounded like they were hitting the right note, the backing band had gone right out of tune. … It has been used for a long time on the show both for the auditions and the live shows.” The paper also reported that Cowell ordered an immediate ban on Auto-Tune being used in future shows, while insisting to friends that he was shocked by the claims and plans to launch an investigation.

Katy Perry Says ‘Pearl’ Is Her Album’s Crowning Jewel

Pop star says ballad is the perfect way to end Teenage Dream. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Katy Perry Photo: MTV News Katy Perry rose to the top of the charts with songs about kissing girls, Vegas vacations gone awry and how awesome “California Gurls” are. So, when fans pop Teenage Dream into their boom boxes, they might be surprised to hear Perry show her vulnerable side on the song “Pearl.” The ballad is about an outgoing, strong young woman who lets a guy “keep her in the dark.” The catch, at the end, is that Perry is actually singing about herself. The singer admitted that by the time she started working on “Pearl,” her album was nearly complete. But, it was missing something. So she headed back into the studio to work on the track. And she thinks it finishes her record in just the right way. “I did one more song with [producer] Greg Wells, and it was called ‘Pearl,’ ” she explained to MTV News about the track. “And it was kind of just like, ‘All right, now I have this crown, and I have all these jewels, and I can put these little jewels into the crown, and I feel like it’s a complete presentation, something I’m really proud of.’ ” So, after recording Teenage Dream rather quickly, “Pearl” became its crowning jewel. “It only took six months [to make Teenage Dream ], which is like lightning speed,” she said. “But I think that I wouldn’t be starting again with this new record if I didn’t feel like this was my best foot forward. Perry said the project shows her evolving. “It’s an evolvement, but it’s not a dis-attachment. … My life is a little bit different, and I’m taking a verbal snapshot right now.” Are you excited to hear Katy Perry’s new album?
