Rihanna Looking To Re-Create ‘Lie’ Magic On Next Album

‘Love the Way You Lie’ producer Alex Da Kid is working on Rated R follow-up. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna Photo: Michael Tran/ FilmMagic Rihanna has found a winning formula in her Eminem collaboration, “Love the Way You Lie.” Naturally, for her next album, she’s reportedly looking to the song’s producer, Alex Da Kid, for new hits. “We worked together about a year before ‘Love the Way You Lie’ in London, and obviously that song has helped the people around her and her label say, ‘Oh, that’s a big hit, we want another one,’ ” Alex explained to Billboard. “You know how the music industry is.” The “Lie” producer — who also produced B.o.B’s “Airplanes” — said that the key to Rihanna’s future success is all about finding the balance between Rated R edginess and the hit-making sound of the Eminem track. “I’d say it’s like a mixture of her two sides,” he said. “It’s commercial, but at the same time, it’s got an edge to it — it has substance.” Alex Da Kid isn’t the only producer coming onboard for the album. Songwriter Sean Garrett has been in the studio with the Barbadian star and recently told MTV News that the new songs will reflect Rihanna’s current, lighter state-of-mind. “I can definitely say that her album is definitely gonna be way more exciting, happy,” Garrett said. “I hope she doesn’t mind me saying this. I love Rihanna. She’s fun, she’s like a sister, and I tend to think she doesn’t really take herself too seriously. And I think that’s what this album is gonna be about.” The album will earn fans in the clubs too, if David Guetta has his way with it. “Well, you know, I’m a DJ, so I make beats that make you want to dance,” Guetta told MTV News. “And I think she was one of the first to do that in that urban world, so you know, I think it would be good for her to do it again.” What kind of music do you want to see Rihanna do next? Eminem Back On Top Of Billboard Chart With Recovery

Last week’s surprise #1, Arcade Fire, drop down to #2. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: Jeff Kravitz/Getty Images Eminem might lend you the crown for a week, but this summer’s chart king is not ready to abdicate his throne just yet. A week after falling back to #2, Slim Shady’s Recovery will be back on top of the Billboard 200 albums charts next week thanks to sales of 133,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. That means that not only did Em cross the 2.1 million mark in just eight weeks, but he pushes back last week’s #1, Arcade Fire ‘s The Suburbs , to #2, as the Canadian indie rockers saw a steep (66 percent) decline on sales of 52,000. Among the newcomers in the top 10 are the Camp Rock 2 soundtrack (#3, 41,000) and the latest from Zakk Wylde’s Black Label Society , Order of the Black (#4, 33,000); country singer Blake Shelton with All About Tonight (#6, 33,000); and college crooner Mike Posner , whose major label debut, 31 Minutes to Takeoff, lands at #8 on sales of 29,000. The rest of the top 10: Justin Bieber , My World 2.0 (#5, 33,000); Rick Ross , Teflon Don (#7, 30,000); Kidz Bop 18 (#9, 27,000); and Avenged Sevenfold , Nightmare (#10, 27,000). Though he fell out of the top 10 to #11, Drake ‘s Thank Me Later racked up another 24,000 in sales, pushing the rapper to the cusp of platinum status. Lady Gaga ‘s The Fame continues to move units (#13, 21,000) nearly two years after its release, but her The Remix album had a swift fall from the top 10, dropping from a #6 debut to #16 in week two as sales fell 58 percent to 17,000. Houston legend Bun B ‘s Trill O.G. album suffered a similar fate, shedding 60 percent of sales in its second week to drop 13 spots to #17 (16,000). As the movie disappointed at the box office, the Beck-fueled soundtrack to “Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World” also had a soft landing, coming in at #24 (13,000). With a four-pack of VMA nominations and a performance slot in hand, Florence and the Machine ‘s Lungs saw a huge bump on the charts, leaping from #105 to #61 on sales of 6,000. Over on the iTunes charts, Em continued his stranglehold on the top, lording over the albums tally yet again, with Arcade Fire just behind (iTunes does not release sales data), followed by Posner, Mumford & Sons’ Sigh No More, Camp Rock 2, Shelton, the “Pilgrim” soundtrack, the Step Up 3D soundtrack, Black Label Society, and Zac Brown Band’s You Get What You Give . On the iTunes singles chart, Em and Rihanna also kept their spot at #1 with “Love the Way You Lie,” followed by the usual suspects: Taio Cruz (“Dynamite”), Katy Perry (“Teenage Dream”), Enrique Iglesias (“I Like It”), Taylor Swift (“Mine”), Usher (“DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love”), B.o.B (“Magic”), Posner (“Cooler Than Me”), Perry again (“California Gurls”) and Jason DeRulo (“Ridin’ Solo”). Eminem seems safe for another week, as the only major competition in the cycle is from Iron Maiden , John Mellencamp , David Gray , and Ray LaMontagne , with a possible dark horse #1 in country singer Trace Adkins . Kurtz Does Lengthy Hurricane Katrina Segment Without Once Mentioning Bush

Is it possible for CNN to do a 7 1/2 minute segment about Hurricane Katrina without mentioning George W. Bush’s name? Given the media’s approaching five year obsession with blaming one of America’s largest natural disasters on a Republican president, it seems highly unlikely, doesn’t it? Yet that’s what happened on “Reliable Sources” Sunday when Howard Kurtz invited Harry Shearer on the program to talk about his new documentary “The Big Uneasy.” In it, Shearer claims the media badly missed the boat in their reporting of what caused the flooding in New Orleans (video follows with transcript and commentary): HOWARD KURTZ, HOST: But the other issue is the writing of the history as to why this happened and it could it happen again? Now, here, you zero in on the Army Corps of Engineers. You feel the mainstream media missed the mark, or is that overstating it? HARRY SHEARER: A, I don’t zero in. The people who did the investigations, the scientists and engineers who actually know what they’re talking about, zeroed in on the Army Corps of Engineers, four decades plus of malfeasance and misfeasance that led to this disaster. I think the national news media basically did take a walk away from that as the core of this story, that this was a manmade disaster. And that’s why I was led to make the movie, to sort of try to correct the record now five years on. KURTZ: Why do you think national journalists walked away from the story? I mean, in other words, was it just short attention span? Was it laziness? Or was it a failure to dig? SHEARER: Well, I think it’s all of those things. And again, I go back to this quote from this anchor person, that the emotional stories are what gets eyeballs. And this is deep stuff. I mean, I worried as I started to make this movie, I’m not taking people to engineering school. I can’t be an instructional film. I can’t — KURTZ: You’re not Al Gore standing up with the charts and the graphs. SHEARER: Right. What should jump out at readers and viewers alike is “four decades plus of malfeasance and misfeasance that led to this disaster.” Hmmm. Four decades. Wouldn’t that mean this disaster was caused by at least some  malfeasance that occurred before George W. Bush was in the White House? And wasn’t that a contention of many conservatives at the time: decades of malfeasance and corruption in New Orleans led to a levee system in a state of disrepair? But that didn’t fit the media template back then which was all about blaming Bush and anything that could possibly diminish this despicable accusation was verboten. Not surprisingly, five years later, Kurtz didn’t ask Shearer whether his research for this documentary uncovered anything that refuted the press’s claims that this disaster was all the 43rd President’s fault. By contrast, Bush’s name was mentioned seven times in a prior segment about how the media covered Michelle Obama’s Spanish vacation last week. Go figure.

Stephanie Pratt, Kelly Rowland, Enrique Iglesias Look Back, On ‘When I Was 17’

The stars recall smashing cars, getting dumped and going to clubs on this week’s episode. By Mawuse Ziegbe Stephanie Pratt appears on “When I was 17” Photo: MTV News When Kelly Rowland was 17, she had a lot going for her. As a member of the budding girl group Destiny’s Child, she had a single on the charts and toured the world. She was living the life that few teens get to experience but she did struggle with one thing that many young people can relate to: learning how to drive. “I was a really, really bad driver,” Rowland admitted on the latest episode of “When I Was 17.” “As a matter of fact, I wrecked about three cars before I finally got the whole driving thing down.” Her friend Angie agreed that Rowland was a driving disaster. “Terrible, terrible,” her pal described the Destiny’s Child diva’s sup-par skills. “Did I say terrible? Terrible driver.” Rowland may have been a nightmare on the road but Enrique Iglesias lived through the type of bad dream that would have destroyed many teens: getting dumped before prom. “I had no luck with the ladies,” Iglesias recalled in the episode. “I was going to prom with this girl that I really liked and she said that she had decided that she wasn’t gonna go with me. It was devastating. When you’re in high school and a few weeks before prom the girl you’re going with says no, it’s awful. At the time, my whole world came crumbling down.” Iglesias eventually hit the prom with a bunch of friends and had a blast. Unlike the Latin singer, reality TV starlet Stephanie Pratt never lacked confidence when it came to a major party. The “Hills” ‘s castmember remembered expertly talking her way into nightclubs as a teen. “When I was 17, all of my friends were 21 and going out to clubs on school nights, and I obviously wanted to go with them. So, I’d get to clubs, and I had such a baby face at 17, and [the bouncers would] be like, ‘There’s no way you’re 27,’ ” Pratt said. “I had ‘borrowed’ my mom’s cocktail ring and I used to wear it on my wedding finger and say to the doorman, ‘You are just such an angel, I’m actually married!’ ” Pratt explained. “And they’d be like, ‘Oh, well. In that case, come right in.’ ” “When I Was 17” airs Saturdays at 11 a.m. on MTV. Eminem Makes It Four Weeks In A Row Atop Billboard

Korn come in a distant #2 with Korn III — Remember Who You Are. By Gil Kaufman Eminem’s Recovery Photo: Interscope What a difference a year makes. Last summer, Eminem ‘s comeback album, Relapse, held on to the top position on the Billboard albums chart for two weeks before beginning a slow downhill march that had it out of the top 10 within two months. This time around, Em’s latest, Recovery, is showing some serious hang time. The disc will stay in the #1 slot for the fourth week in a row, racking up another 195,000 in sales for a one-month total just a hair shy of 1.5 million copies, according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan. The better news for Slim Shady is that sales dropped just 15 percent from the week before, unlike some previous chart-toppers, which have seen steep drops after high debuts. Veteran metal act Korn are way behind at #2 with their Roadrunner Records debut, Korn III — Remember Who You Are, which sold 63,000 copies. The other debuts in a fresh-faced top 10 come from Christian act Newsboys , whose Born Again is in at #4 (45,000); former Police singer Sting , with his orchestral Symphonicities disc (#6, 36,000); country singer Jerrod Niemann with Judge Jerrod & the Hung Jury (#7, 34,000); metal supergroup Hellyeah ‘s Stampede (#8, 28,000); and M.I.A. , whose divisive ///Y/ just barely makes it into the top 10 at #9 on sales of 28,000. As for the rest of the top 10, Drake slips a spot to #3 with Thank Me Later, which moved another 50,000 copies as it soared past 833,000 in five weeks. Justin Bieber holds fast at #5 with My World 2.0 (41,000), and the “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” soundtrack drops six spots to #10 (28,000). It was a short sojourn in the top 10 for Outkast’s Big Boi , as his solo debut, Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty , falls 11 spots to #14 in week two on sales of 26,000 as traffic dropped 59 percent. Warped faves the Maine have a solid debut at #16 with Black & White (25,000). The Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse compilation Dark Night of the Soul — which finally saw official release after a label squabble kept it bottled up last year — lands at #24 (16,000). And An Airplane Carried Me to Bed, the first effort from Owl City mastermind Adam Young’s Sky Sailing side project , lands at #30 on sales of 13,000. Further down the list, the soundtrack to “Inception” hits #53 (8,000) with the latest from rapper Paul Wall , Heart of a Champion, not too far behind at #58 on sales just under 8,000. The news continues to be grim for Christina Aguilera , as her soft-selling Bionic shed another 33 percent of business in its sixth week on the charts, dropping 25 spots to #59 on sales of 7,000; the album looks to be stalling out around 200,000 copies, by far the weakest showing of the singer’s career. Whether because of good word-of-mouth, placement on the latest “Twilight” soundtrack or positive reviews for their major-label debut, Infinite Arms, Band of Horses makes a huge jump up the charts after two months, leaping 58 spots to #70 on sales of 6,000. Over on the iTunes charts, Eminem holds down the top spots on the singles and albums charts again, as his hit collabo with Rihanna, “Love the Way You Lie,” continues to dominate the action. The singles chart remains almost exactly the same as last week, with the only change coming from a flip-flop at #2 and #3 between Taio Cruz and Katy Perry , with Cruz’s “Dynamite” hopping up above Perry’s “California Gurls.” (iTunes does not provide detailed sales figures for its charts.) On the iTunes album side, there was plenty of action, as below Eminem is the debut of the Sting symphonic disc, followed by M.I.A., Sky Sailing, Korn, Drake, the Maine, “Eclipse,” Jack Johnson ‘s To the Sea and Lady Gaga ‘s The Fame. Next week look for chart debuts from Rick Ross with Teflon Don , another Kidz Bop disc and Sheryl Crow ‘s Justin Timberlake-assisted 100 Miles From Memphis. Related Artists Eminem Korn

Lil Wayne Expected To Be Released From Prison In November

A November 4 release would mean Wayne served eight months of his yearlong sentence. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne, Beacon Theater, New York City, 07.22.2007 Photo: Alexander Tamargo/ Getty Images Lil Wayne is approximately halfway through his one-year jail sentence , which began March 8 when the superstar MC turned himself into authorities after reaching a plea deal. According to prison records accessed by MTV News, the rapper has a projected release date of November 4. Pending any violations or infractions for behavioral issues, the rapper is expected to see the light of day eight months after entering prison. While Wayne has been away, however, is presence has remained potent. His prot

Eminem Tops Billboard For Third Week

Drake holds steady at #2, while Big Boi’s solo debut comes in at #3. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images Now that Eminem is back on top of the charts, it looks like Slim Shady isn’t planning on budging anytime soon. For the third week in a row, Em’s Recovery will hold on to the pole position this week, moving another 229,000 copies to push the disc close to the 1.3 million mark, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. Also not budging is Drake , whose Thank Me Later holds steady in the #2 spot thanks to 74,000 more units served for a one-month total of more than 782,000. Coming in at the #3 position is the long-delayed official solo debut of Outkast’s Big Boi , Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty, which sold 62,000 copies. At #10 is the latest from Enrique Iglesias, Euphoria, which had a soft landing of 27,000. The rest of the top 10: Muse may be suddenly ambivalent about their placement in the vampire movies, but “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” soundtrack holds in there at #4 with sales of 45,000 for a five-week total just shy of 350,000. Justin Bieber is also mostly steady at #5 with My World 2.0 (43,000), followed by Now 34 (#6, 33,000), Jack Johnson ‘s To the Sea (#7, 30,000), Lady Gaga ‘s The Fame (#8, 29,000) and Lady Antebellum ‘s Need You Now (#9, 28,000). Though duet partner Miley Cyrus continues to move in the opposite direction with her more mature Can’t Be Tamed, dropping two spots to #11 on sales of 24,000, rejuvenated Poison rocker Bret Michaels has a decent showing at #14 with Custom Built, which debuts with 22,000. Aussie pop star Kylie Minogue is still trying to crack the code in America, as her Aphrodite sneaks into the top 20 at #19 on sales of 18,000. Meanwhile, jokey Colorado rap duo 3OH!3 shed 63 percent of their first-week business for Streets of Gold, dropping 16 spots to #23 (15,000). Incubus singer Brandon Boyd ‘s solo debut, The Wild Trapeze, swings in at #3 (11,000), Kelis ‘ hyped Flesh Tone album barely makes it into the top 50 at #48 (8,000) and Juvenile has to settle for a #58 debut for his Beast Mode (6,000). It continues to be all about Eminem on the iTunes charts as well. He holds on to the #1 position on the albums and singles tallies, as the Rihanna duet “Love the Way You Lie” climbs back into the single lead over Katy Perry ‘s Snoop Dogg-assisted “California Gurls.” The rest of the singles top 10 is mostly a reshuffling of the deck, with Iglesias coming in at #4 with “I Like It,” just behind Taio Cruz ‘s “Dynamite.” The rest of the singles list includes B.o.B (“Airplanes”), Travie McCoy (“Billionaire”), Mike Posner (“Cooler Than Me”), Jason Derulo (“Ridin’ Solo”), Eminem (“Not Afraid”) and Usher (“OMG”). (iTunes does not release sales figures for its charts.) Things get shaken up a bit more on the iTunes album chart, where Boi snags the #2 spot, followed by the “Eclipse” soundtrack, Drake, Boyd, Johnson, Minogue, Lady Gaga, Iglesias and a Daughtry compilation called Leave This Town: The B-Sides. Eminem’s probably safe for another week on the Billboard countdown, as the only competition in the rearview mirror will come from Korn , M.I.A. , a solo Sting , metal supergroup Hellyeah and the revamped Crowded House . Mystikal Says He’s Recruited Lil Wayne, Pharrell For New LP

‘I kissed the floor and hugged the mic and held it so gently to me,’ the Cajun MC says of first post-prison recording session. By Shaheem Reid Mystikal Photo: MTV News Mystikal is back home in Louisiana and the energetic MC says he’s more excited than ever. “Finally. Six years, that ain’t no walk in the park,” Mystikal told us over the weekend. “I had a lot of time to do a lot of growing, reflecting and thinking and stuff like that,” he said, talking about the six-year sentence he served on a sexual battery and extortion charge. But since his release from prison at the top of the year, Mystikal has wasted no time getting his career back on track. He added to his busy schedule over the Fourth of July weekend with a performance at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans. “To participate in an event like this is awesome,” he said. Mystikal also recently jumped on Lloyd’s “Set Me Free,” performed for his hometown at the Zulu Ball and in front of millions at the “VH1 Hip-Hop Honors,” dedicated this year to the Dirty South. And he says he’s recorded an album’s worth of material. “Everything is lined up for me, it’s amazing. I didn’t throw pity parties for myself [while in prison]. I knew I was too blessed to be stressed and I knew I was gonna get through it. I’m still on Jive. I still have an obligation to fulfill with them guys,” he said of his record label. “We gonna do it in a major way.” One of the collaborators on Mystikal’s upcoming LP is Pharrell Williams, who with partner Chad Hugo scored the Cajun veteran’s hit “Shake Ya Ass” a decade ago — in the process elevating the Virginia duo’s career to legendary heights. “I just talked to him the other day,” Mystikal said of Pharell. “He says he got an armored-tank beat for me. I can’t wait to hear what that sounds like.” Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes have already recorded features and the Nola MC is also going to get in the lab with Mannie Fresh. Mys says once he fully launches his comeback, “a lot of rappers are gonna have to go back to the drawing board.” “It wasn’t no big writing sanctuary, but I was able to put some stuff together,” he said about his time away. “I feel like I’m doing more writing now than I did there. Y’all about to be real proud.” As for his versatile flow, Mystikal insisted he didn’t have to worry about finding it again. “I ain’t never lose it,” he smiled. “I was rapping in that place. I was doing benefit concerts for American Cancer Society and MDA [Muscular Dystrophy Association].” Once released, the Southern MC behind hits such as “Danger” and “The Man Right Chea” said he was humbled. “I kissed the floor and hugged the mic and held it so gently to me,” he recalled of getting in the studio for the first time in more than half a decade. “That was with KLC from Beats by the Pound who was on No Limit with me. He was the guy I learned how to record demos with way back when I was just starting in this game. It was a wonderful feeling.” Who else would you like to hear Mystikal collaborate with? American Idols Live! Tour Dates Canceled

Eight dates have been axed from the summer tour featuring season-nine ‘Idol’ contestants. By Mawuse Ziegbe Katie Stevens, Lee DeWyze, Crystal Bowersox and Aaron Kelly on the American Idols Live! Tour Photo: Mark Cunningham/ WireImage Several dates have been slashed from the American Idols Live! Tour, which kicked off just before the Fourth of July weekend with a stop in Michigan on Friday. As the season-nine contestants continue to make their way across the country, an updated tour schedule posted on the “American Idol” website shows that eight dates have been canceled. The revised concert schedule also reflects an earlier finale for the tour, wrapping now on August 31 in Indianapolis instead of on September 16 in Portland, Maine , as previously planned. Shows in cities including Buffalo, New York; Portland, Oregon; Kansas City, Missouri; and Cleveland have all been nixed. Canadian stops in Winnipeg, Manitoba and Toronto have also been cut. The tour, featuring finalists from the ninth season of the amateur talent juggernaut, highlights “Idol” champ Lee DeWyze and runner-up (and fan fave) Crystal Bowersox. A spokesperson for Live Nation confirmed the cancellations to The Associated Press but declined to explain the reason for the schedule revamp. The axed American Idols Live! Tour dates follow a rash of canceled shows by several major musical acts scheduled to hit the road this summer. The once-popular, female-fronted Lilith Fair was recently forced to scale back , cutting 10 tour dates because of poor ticket sales. Christina Aguilera postponed her tour until 2011 due to scheduling issues, as did U2, who pushed back their 360 Tour while lead singer Bono recovers from surgery. Although no official reason has been given for the new tour schedule, interest in “American Idol” appears to be on the wane. Twenty-four million viewers tuned in to see DeWyze get crowned as the season-nine victor, but that tally marked the lowest finale rating since the final episode of the show’s 2002 debut season. In addition, DeWyze and Bowersox’s post-“Idol” offerings have seen slow sales; the season-nine singers have fared significantly worse on the charts than the season-eight breakout stars, winner Kris Allen and runner-up Adam Lambert. Are you planning to see the American Idols Live! Tour? Or have you lost interest since season nine? Let us know in the comments.
