Sade Tops Billboard Albums Chart For Third Straight Week

Final Johnny Cash album debuts at #3. By Gil Kaufman Sade’s Soldier Of Love Photo: Epic Sade has done it again. The mysterious chanteuse will notch her third week in a row at the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart next week with her Soldier of Love album. According to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, thanks to another slow week for new releases, the Nigerian-born singer moved another 127,000 copies of her first album in 10 years, for a three-week total topping 820,000. The only other debut in the top 10 was a posthumous disc from late country giant Johnny Cash, American VI: Ain’t No Grave, containing some of the final recordings from the singer, including covers of tunes by Sheryl Crow, Kris Kristofferson and Tom Paxton. The Rick Rubin-produced disc sold 54,000 in its debut week. The rest of the top 10 was largely unchanged: Lady Antebellum ‘s Need You Now (#2, 118,000), Black Eyed Peas ‘ The E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies) (#4, 50,000), Lady Gaga ‘s The Fame (#5, 48,000), Lil Wayne ‘s Rebirth (#6, 38,000), Ke$ha ‘s Animal (#7, 32,000), Susan Boyle ‘s I Dreamed a Dream (#8, 30,000), Taylor Swift ‘s Fearless (#9, 28,000) and Justin Bieber ‘s My World (#10, 26,000). Just outside the top 10, landing at #11 was long-running punk band Alkaline Trio , whose This Addiction moved nearly 26,000 copies, while further down the list was Texas emo act the Rocket Summer , the solo project from Stephen Bryce Avary, which hit #38 with album #4, Of Men and Angels (13,000). The ambitious three-album set from freak-folk queen Joanna Newsom , Have One On Me , had an impressive debut at #74 on sales of more than 7,000, while last year’s “American Idol” winner, Kris Allen , got a huge bump from his Haiti benefiting appearance on the show last week, which bumped his self-titled debut up 57 spots to #81 (7,000) as sales leaped 61 percent. A bit further down the line, producer to the stars Butch Walker (Pink, Katy Perry, Weezer) waltzed into the #116 spot with I Liked It Better When You Had No Heart (5,000), and another former “Idol,” last season’s #4 finisher, Allison Iraheta , moved back onto the charts at #161 with her debut, Just Like You , (3,000) which also benefited from a performance spot on last week’s “Idol” and pushed the disc to nearly 90,000 in sales to date. Sade could have some company next week, when the debut from Jason Derulo finally hits the charts, along with new ones from country singer Blake Shelton , Lifehouse , the debut from “Idol” vet Danny Gokey , a posthumous Jimi Hendrix album and Peter Gabriel ‘s eclectic covers collection. Jennifer Lopez Says She’s Already Signed New Label Deal

Singer says Love? will be out this summer. By Gil Kaufman Jennifer Lopez Photo: Mike Coppola/ Getty Images That was quick. A day after her manager confirmed that she split with longtime label home Sony Music, Jennifer Lopez announced that she has already signed a new deal and will drop her long-in-the-works comeback attempt, Love?, this summer. The Evolution Of: Jennifer Lopez “I am making this statement to put an end to any confusion in regards to my next album, titled Love? ” Lopez said, according to Billboard. “I have belonged to the Sony family since the beginning of my career as a singer and together we’ve had great success. I have fulfilled my contractual responsibilities with Sony/Epic up to this point, and we have both reached friendly terms about my departure from the label. I’m also happy to say that we’ve found a new home for my album, Love?, and that it is slated for release in the summer of 2010.” Lopez did not specify what label she has signed to, but Deadline Hollywood , the blog that originally broke the story of the Sony split, reported that the singer/actress is in talks with Island Def Jam. Neither side has discussed what precipitated the split, but Deadline speculated that it might have been a response to the poor critical and commercial reception to the album’s first official single, “Louboutins,” which failed to light up the charts. The site also suggested that Lopez, who has sold nearly 12 million albums in the U.S. since her 1999 debut, could have walked voluntarily after fulfilling her Sony contract with “Louboutins” and a previously leaked single, “Fresh out the Oven.” Lopez is the musical guest and host of “Saturday Night Live” this week. Jennifer Lopez Parts Ways With Sony Records

With the release of her new album up in the air, the singer/actress is set to host ‘Saturday Night Live’ this weekend. By Gil Kaufman Jennifer Lopez Photo: MTV News Jennifer Lopez is scheduled to be the host and musical guest on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend, but unlike most host/guests, at the moment Jenny from the Block doesn’t seem to have much to promote during her appearance. That’s because, according to Entertainment Weekly , the singer has split with longtime record label Sony Music’s Epic Records, which was slated to release her delayed seventh album, Love? , in April. After taking time off to become a mother of twins with husband Marc Anthony, Lopez was working on her comeback album, releasing the shoe fetish song “Louboutins” last year. She famously wiped out while lip-synching that tune at November’s American Music Awards , but when the song fizzled on the charts, failing to crack the top 10 on the singles tally, the heat on the project apparently cooled off. “Jennifer had a wonderful relationship with the Sony Music Group, and they have shared many successes together, but the time was right to make a change that best serves the direction of her career as an actress and recording artist. She is grateful and appreciative to everyone at Sony for all that they accomplished together,” the singer’s manager, Benny Medina, said in a statement Monday. Her rep told EW that Lopez is already negotiating with another record label. A Sony spokesperson could not be reached for comment at press time. The story broke on Monday on the Deadline Hollywood blog, where it was reported that Lopez’s contract had ended and that she’d fulfilled it with “Louboutins” and another recent single, “Fresh Out the Oven,” which leaked online in October. The report also stated that it’s unclear if Lopez was finished with the album, which reportedly features the Neptunes, Danja, Jim Jonsin and Rodney Jerkins. Unnamed Lopez “insiders” said the album was “by no means done” and that she had only finished a few songs for it. Lopez is slated to return to the big screen in late April in the romantic comedy “The Back-Up Plan.” Related Artists Jennifer Lopez

‘We Are The World’ Debuts At #2 On Billboard Hot 100

Charity single falls just behind Ke$ha’s ‘Tik Tok.’ By Jayson Rodriguez LL Cool J, Wyclef Jean, Swizz Beatz, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes and will.i.am perform “We Are the World” Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Wire Image Despite some big-name detractors , “We Are the World: 25 for Haiti” debuts at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart just days after the all-star charity single premiered during the televised opening of the Vancouver Winter Olympics. The song, a remake of the Michael Jackson- and Lionel Richie-powered original, was only bested by Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok,” which tops the chart for the ninth straight week. The “WATW” remake produced by RedOne and featuring the collective Artist for Haiti — a group that comprises a number of musicians and actors, including Jamie Foxx, Justin Bieber, Pink, Usher, Kanye West and Celine Dion, among others — is the latest charity effort to rise on the charts. The Hope for Haiti Now album , which featured covers by artists like Justin Timberlake and an original song by Jay-Z, U2’s Bono and The Edge, Swizz Beatz and Rihanna, topped the Billboard 200 album chart. The project was the first all-digital album to land at the top of the charts. Both Hope for Haiti Now and the “We Are the World” remake provide much-needed funds for various Haitian earthquake relief efforts . The new “We Are the World” video was helmed by Oscar-winning director Paul Haggis, who described the shoot as “chaos” but noted it was a remarkable experience. “You hear these stories about people checking their egos at the door, and it really is true,” Haggis told MTV News. “They came and stood forever and were glorified extras a lot of the time. They just stood in the corner and waved. It was hot and it was crowded. When there’s chaos, there’s friction. Where there’s fiction, there’s drama, and I knew I’d have fun things to shoot. Unfortunately, there wasn’t as much drama as I expected. People really got along very well.” Related Videos Behind The Scenes Of ‘We Are The World’ Related Photos ‘We Are The World 25 For Haiti’ Recording Session

Lil Wayne’s Rebirth Is No Match For Lady Antebellum

Weezy’s latest debuts at #2, Nick Jonas & the Administration enter at #3 on Billboard 200. By Gil Kaufman Lil Wayne’s Rebirth Photo: Universal Motown What a difference two years make. While Lil Wayne smashed records when his last album, 2008’s Tha Carter III, sold more than 1 million copies and debuted at #1, the frequently delayed, oft-leaked follow-up, Rebirth, came nowhere near that figure. The rock-flavored disc — which was accidentally shipped to 500 Amazon.com customers in December and then widely leaked online — will debut at #2 on the Billboard 200 album charts this week on sales of 176,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. The debut comes one day after Wayne got a three-week delay in his sentencing for federal gun charges due to a dental emergency. That figure was not enough to unseat last week’s #1, country darlings Lady Antebellum ‘s Need You Now, which will retain the pole position despite losing nearly 60 percent of its first-week business (209,000). Coming in just behind Wayne is the debut from Nick Jonas & the Administration , Who I Am, which sold 82,000 copies. The only other debut in the top 10 is from horror rocker Rob Zombie , whose Hellbilly Deluxe 2 lands at #8 (49,000). The rest of the top 10 features albums that got a nice post-Grammy awards bump, including Lady Gaga ‘s Fame (#4, 79,000, up 17 percent), the 2010 Grammy Nominees compilation (#5, 71,000, up 55 percent), the Black Eyed Peas ‘ The E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies) (#6, 70,000, up 76 percent), Taylor Swift ‘s Album-of-the-Year-winning Fearless (#7, 53,000, up 58 percent) and Best New Artist winners Zac Brown Band ‘s Foundation (#10, 40,000, up 82 percent). Coming in at #9 is Susan Boyle ‘s I Dreamed a Dream, which has sold nearly 3.5 million copies in just under three months.
