3Oh!3 Prepare Fans For Another Ke$ha Collaboration

‘First Kiss,’ the duo’s first song with ‘rad’ pal Ke$ha, will appear on their upcoming album. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias 3Oh!3 Photo: MTV News 3Oh!3 helped Ke$ha teach boys lessons on her hit “Blah Blah Blah.” And she’s returning the favor on the guys’ next album, Streets of Gold . “First Kiss” was recorded before Ke$ha stormed the charts with “Blah,” and it was actually the backdrop for the first meeting between the party-loving singer and the similarly celebration-happy duo. 3Oh!3’s Sean Foreman recalled how he and bandmate Nathaniel Motte were first introduced to the “Tik Tok” singer. “We were working with our buddy Benny Blanco and Dr. Luke [on ‘Kiss’], and we had a line for the song. It’s kind of a call and response, and Luke’s like, ‘I know this girl.’ We worked with her and we got a friendship since then,” he said. “She’s rad,” Motte added. “The success she had with ‘Tik Tok’ was amazing.” As of now this collaboration with Ke$ha is the only guest appearance on the album, which comes out in June. But the guys note that they’re open to inviting other artists into the studio. “It’s nice to work [with friends], like when we worked with Katy Perry [on ‘Starstrukk’],” said Foreman. MTV’s Musical March Madness Final Four Preview: Muse

British rockers take on My Chemical Romance after pounding the White Stripes. By James Montgomery Muse Photo: Warner/Getty Images/MTV News Who : Champions of the Midwest region in MTV’s Musical March Madness tournament , Muse roll into the Final Four with a whole lot of momentum at their British backs, having knocked off a murderers’ row of rock-radio heavies just to make it to this point. Sort of a stripped-down version of Michigan’s famed Fab Five (since, you know, there are only three of them), Muse mauled the competition with a game that’s equal parts finesse and pound-n-ground, highlighted by the fleet-fingered shredding and multi-octave range of guitarist/frontman Matthew Bellamy and the pummeling, precise combo of drummer Dominic Howard and bassist Christopher Wolstenholme, perhaps the best frontcourt in the tourney. How They Got Here : Muse faced perhaps the toughest road to the Final Four, entering the tournament as a #2 seed, then facing a baptism of fire in their first round matchup against seasoned vets the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Muse eeked out a 51-49 victory, but things didn’t get any easier from there, as they were pitted against rock-radio brutes Breaking Benjamin in the round of 32. They won a tightly contested 53-47 battle, then advanced to the Sweet 16, where they took down upset-minded AFI by the same score. Their easiest matchup came in the Elite Eight, where they pounded the fourth-seeded White Stripes , perhaps showing that they’re rounding into top form at precisely the right time. The Outlook : Like we said, Muse are hitting their stride, and they’ll make for a tough out in the Final Four. They command a rather ginormous international fanbase, and, after years of grinding it out, they’ve finally broken through stateside, too. Last year’s The Resistance debuted at #3 on the Billboard albums chart (their highest U.S. bow ever), selling an impressive 128,000 copies, and their song “Uprising” is a rock-radio mainstay, having hung around on the charts for 34 weeks now. Plus, after besting the likes of the Chili Peppers and AFI, Muse are battle tested, which means we wouldn’t bet against them at this point. The only downside? They’ll go up against My Chemical Romance in the Final Four, which might prove to be too tough a matchup for even the mighty men of Muse. Throughout the day, we’ll be breaking down the four bands still standing in MTV’s Musical March Madness tournament. Voting on the Final Four opens Friday on the Newsroom blog and runs until Sunday night. Related Photos MTV News’ Band Bracketology Who Will Win MTV’s Musical March Madness?! Related Artists Muse

Lady Antebellum Take Back Top Billboard Spot From Sade

‘American Idol’ finalist Danny Gokey debuts at #4. By Gil Kaufman Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now Photo: Liberty After a three-week run at the top, Sade ‘s Soldier of Love will be replaced at #1 on the Billboard albums chart by the very album she vanquished last month, Lady Antebellum ‘s Need You Now. The country trio’s second CD will retake the top spot thanks to sales of 126,000, while Sade will drop down a spot after moving 79,000 more units for sales of nearly 900,000 in four weeks, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. Though he sold a bit less than Kris Allen did in his first week, last season’s #4 finisher on “American Idol,” Danny Gokey , had a solid debut at #4 (65,000) with My Best Days a week after appearing on the show; Allen’s self-titled album debuted at #11 on sales of 70,000 in November. Also breaking into the top five was country star Blake Shelton , whose Hillbilly Bone landed at #3 (71,000). The soundtrack to Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” re-imagining, Almost Alice — featuring songs from Avril Lavigne, the All-American Rejects, Owl City, Tokio Hotel and All Time Low — sold 58,000 copies to debut at #5, followed by the latest from rockers Lifehouse , Smoke & Mirrors (#6, 54,000). The third album from R&B singer Raheem DeVaughn , The Love & War MasterPeace, debuted at #9 (45,000), just ahead of country newbie Easton Corbin ‘s self-titled debut (#10, 43,000). The only holdovers in the top 10 were Lady Gaga ‘s unstoppable The Fame (#7, 49,000), which is zeroing in on 3 million in sales, and the Black Eyed Peas ‘ The E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies) (#8, 46,000). Just outside the top 10, Jason Derulo ‘s self-titled debut hit #11 on sales of 42,000. As he begins his one-year prison sentence , Lil Wayne ‘s Rebirth will fall six spots to #12 (32,000), just ahead of Ke$ha ‘s Animal, which drops six to #13 (30,000) as sales approach half a million. Also falling out of the top 10 is Justin Bieber ‘s My World (27,000), which slid five spots to #15. Among the other debuts this week: DJ Khaled ‘s Victory (#14, 28,000), Peter Gabriel ‘s covers album, Scratch My Back (#26, 20,000) and a live album from long-running shamrock punks Flogging Molly , Live at the Greek Theatre (#40, 13,000). Meanwhile, showing the power of another amazing viral video, OK Go ‘s Of the Blue Colour of the Sky moved back onto the lower reaches of the charts to #179 after six weeks out of the top 200 thanks to the massive coverage of their Rube Goldberg-ian clip for “This Too Shall Pass.” Look for a shakeup at the top next week as new albums from Gorillaz , Ludacris and country singer Gary Allan crash the charts. ‘American Idol’ Top Eight Women: What They Need To Do

Paige Miles and Didi Benami need to step it up, while Crystal Bowersox and Lilly Scott should keep doing their thing. By Gil Kaufman Crystal Bowersox on “American Idol” last week Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images This is the week we’ve all been waiting for. Following Tuesday and Wednesday night’s performances, we will be down to season nine’s top 12, and the competition on “American Idol” will start to get serious. After last week’s surprise switcheroo due to Crystal Bowersox’s illness , the remaining 12 ladies served up a mixed bag of good, bad and eh on Wednesday night. Lilly Scott and Siobhan Magnus proved to be suddenly strong competition for Bowersox, who stormed back from her undisclosed ailment to regain her spot as the woman to beat this year. So what do the rest of the ladies need to do to win the hearts — and ears — of the nation? How can they get enough votes to avoid landing in the bottom two? Here’s what we do (and don’t) want to see from these “Idol” hopefuls, starting with those who need the most work. Didi Benami It feels like this once-promising singer has seriously lost her way. After ditching the thing that got her to the big show (i.e., sensitive singer/songwriter material with a jazzy twist), Benami was undone by a hard-to-watch warble through the Bill Withers soul classic “Lean on Me.” Didi would be wise to dig into the Lily Allen or Corinne Bailey Rae songbook to get back into the game. Paige Miles The judges have told Miles she has the strongest voice in the competition this year, but so far, she’s failed to make much of an impression personality-wise. Last week, Kara DioGuardi faulted her for smiling through a cover of Kelly Clarkson’s “Walk Away,” dissing Miles for not getting the angry mood of the song right. And she should know — she co-wrote it! She needs to put the coloring books away and bite off a meaty Alicia Keys song that will allow her to open up and show some serious emotion. Katie Stevens This teenager needs to find her inner child. After weeks of going too old, Stevens is in danger of losing her spot if she doesn’t show the panel that she could be a youthful, contemporary artist. She tried to display her younger side by singing Bailey Rae’s signature “Put Your Records On,” but even that didn’t work because the judges said it felt too unfocused and bland, with Simon Cowell suggesting she needed a bit more time to figure out what kind of artist she wants to be. Unless Stevens can smash it with a convincing tumble through a Katy Perry or Rihanna song, she might be back in her old classroom next week. Lacey Brown Proving you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t, Brown followed the judges’ advice and performed Sixpence None the Richer’s “Kiss Me” — and they didn’t like it. In order to stick around, she needs the kind of signature moment Magnus provided with her Aretha Franklin power note, so this week’s selection should focus on displaying her range and originality. Siobhan Magnus Has one note ever meant so much? Magnus, this year’s token quirky girl, could very well have stamped her ticket to the top 12 last week thanks to that massive wail at the end of her version of Franklin’s “Think.” Now, Magnus just has to keep surprising the judges and audience to stay in the running. Luckily, she hasn’t painted herself into a genre corner so far and has displayed an indie-leaning sensibility , so she’s free to try out anything on the charts, from Lady Gaga to Owl City. Katelyn Epperly The judges weren’t crazy about Epperly’s slow take on Coldplay’s “The Scientist,” but America gave it a thumbs-up and she made it to sing another day. She should strap the guitar back on this week and give us a new twist on a contemporary singer/songwriter, perhaps even putting some jazz into a Taylor Swift tune. Lilly Scott Scott is on a roll. She nailed her Beatles cover two weeks ago, gave another solid performance with Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come” last week, again proving that while she may not have the best voice, she’s got a unique stage presence and memorable delivery. It would be great to see her sit at a piano this week and rework a contemporary ballad, say something from Muse or Carrie Underwood. Crystal Bowersox At this point, it’s Crystal’s game to lose. She’s proven she can kill it with classic-rock tunes, thanks to a very strong gospel-tinged rendition of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Long as I Can See the Light,” but this week might be her chance to tackle a newer artist and prove that she can be relevant now. A Jack Johnson song might do the trick. What do you want to see from the girls on Tuesday night? Who do you hope steps up their game this week? Let us know below! Lil Wayne, Kanye West Protege Mikkey Halstead Working On First Album

‘It’s really going to be done the way I want,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Steven Roberts Mikkey Halsted Photo: MTV News Fire Starter: Mikkey Halsted You would think that if Kanye West produced your demo with beats he hand-selected for you, you would be good to go. Now if that demo somehow found its way into the hands of Cash Money Records CEO Birdman, you’d definitely be topping the charts in no time. As a teenager, Mikkey Halsted was lucky enough to experience both of those scenarios, although things ended up not working out as planned. Hailing from Chicago, Halsted was introduced to Kanye by his sister, Miss Criss, another artist West had been working with in 2001. Criss raved to the producer about her brother’s lyrical skills but it wasn’t until ‘Ye overheard Halsted freestyling that he began to really pay attention. “Just going over to Kanye’s mama’s house, I used to be just kicking it, freestyling,” Halsted explained. “I really wasn’t taking hip-hop seriously at that point. I was into trying to make it to the NBA — I was a ballplayer. We got over there freestyling one time and he was like, ‘Damn, man, you’re really raw for real. Your sister wasn’t lying.’ He was like, ‘Man, take these beats, man, and see what you can do.’ ” Halsted came back the next day with three records finished, and the duo worked on a 15-song demo that made it to the executive offices of Cash Money Records. “This is before Kanye went to the Roc and all that … got to Cash Money, they heard it. They went crazy. They actually tried to get Kanye and me to sign.” Mikkey and his sister both signed and actually went on tour with the label, and although things did not ultimately work out with Cash Money, he built great relationships — Lil Wayne is still one of his good friends. Weezy shouted out Halsted in the October 2008 issue of XXL saying, “If anybody had me really get on my sh–, [it was] Mikkey.” Halsted also learned from the Cash Money work ethic. “I learned the independent game from them and I saw how they grinded. I took the Cash Money grind and applied it to my own situation and with my work ethic. I saw Wayne [work], and me and Wayne kind of came up together in a way,” he said. “All of those things and all of those different people kind of made me who I am today.” After a short stint signed to Jermaine Dupri’s So So Def imprint, Halsted found himself independent again — and relishing it. He hooked back up with Kanye’s onetime mentor and Grammy-winning producer, No ID, and the two have steadily been putting out mixtapes and releasing songs to the hip-hop blogosphere. They are currently working on an independent album called The Darkroom. “It’s really going to be my first album and it’s really going to be done the way I want — the way No ID and I wanted to do it if we didn’t have any label interference,” Halsted said. “But it’s just a good thing. I’ve been through so many different things in a short period of time, so thank God I started as a teenager so, you know, you feel like you matured now, you ready for everything that’s coming.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .
