Christina Aguilera Sings NBA Finals National Anthem, Celebs Cheer Lakers to Victory

Her new album failed to land at the top of the charts during its first week of release, but Christina Aguilera still felt like a winner last night. That’s because the singer opened Game Six of the NBA Finals with a rousing rendition of the national anthem and then sat courtside as the Los Angeles Lakers pummeled the Boston Celtics 89-67, setting up a decisive Game Seven for the title tomorrow night. Watch Xtina show off her vocal range now: NBA Finals Anthem Aguilera wasn’t the only celebrity at the game. As usual, the crowd was filled with more famous faces than Katsuya on a Saturday night. The most surprising sighting? Michelle Obama and will.i.am sharing a corporate box. While we try to come up with ways to taunt and jink Mr. Khloe Kardashian before Game Seven, take a look below at who else took in the contest:

Jay-Z Says He Plans To Age Gracefully In The Rap Game

At the ripe age of 40, Hov tells Rolling Stone he enjoys the challenge of competing with younger artists. By Jayson Rodriguez Jay-Z on the cover of “Rolling Stone” Photo: Wenner Media Is Jay-Z taking a page out of Diddy’s playbook? The Bad Boy Records mogul has long told fans and detractors alike that he wouldn’t stop. Now, is seems like the legendary Brooklyn wordsmith is also keen on keeping his run going as long as he can. After threatening to retire several times, Jay recently told Rolling Stone that he’s bent on aging gracefully as a rapper while still maintaining his spot on top of the rankings. The problem other rappers have had as they get older, Jay told the magazine, is that they haven’t adjusted to younger audiences in a believable way. “One of the reasons I wanted to make Blueprint 3 was because of the challenge,” Jay told the magazine in a cover story out this week. “We’ve seen people like LL [Cool J] have longevity, and we respect the heritage of what he’s done, but it’s not like, right now, he’s competing on the same level as Lil Wayne. So for me to still be able to compete at that level at my age, that’s rarefied air. It’s never been done. I think the problem with people, as they start to mature, they say, ‘Rap is a young man’s game,’ and they keep trying to make young songs. But you don’t know the slang — it changes every day. You can visit the topic, but these young kids live it every day, and you’re just visiting. So you’re trying to be something you’re not, and the audience doesn’t buy into that. And people wonder why. ‘I made a great Southern bounce song!’ You’re from New York, and you’re 70! Why are you bouncing?” After scoring 11 #1 albums, the rapper admitted that he’s only told about 10 stories in his career. He’s been retelling the same narratives with varying details and elements. But on his next project, Jay-Z told MTV News last year, he plans to experiment more and revealed the collection may veer off so much it won’t debut at the top of the charts. In the interview, Hov also talked about how he and Beyonc

‘Shrek Forever After’ Tops Box Office For Third Straight Weekend

Second-place finisher ‘Get Him to the Greek’ was best of the new releases. By Josh Wigler “Shrek Forever After” Photo: Marco Garcia/ Getty Images The Box-Office Top Five #1 “Shrek Forever After” ($25.3 million) #2 “Get Him to the Greek” ($17.4 million) #3 “Killers” ($16.1 million) #4 “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” ($13.9 million) #5 “Sex and the City 2” ($12.7 million) Even with four major new releases hitting theaters this weekend, box-office supremacy remained in the clutches of the mean green ogre known as Shrek. “Shrek Forever After,” the franchise’s fourth installment, topped the charts with a $25.3 million haul from Friday through Sunday, marking the film’s third consecutive weekend victory. Of the weekend’s new releases, “Get Him to the Greek” performed the best. The raunchy comedy stars Jonah Hill as a young talent agent and Russell Brand as Aldous Snow, the troubled rock star first introduced in 2008’s “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” “Greek” managed a respectable $17.4 million haul, nearly halving its reported $40 million production budget. Although “Greek” wasn’t able to best “Shrek,” it did manage to defeat “Killers,” the spy-themed romantic comedy starring Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl as a married couple drawn into the deadly world of espionage. The film earned a third-place finish worth $16.1 million. The weekend’s other major new releases, “Marmaduke” and “Splice,” stayed out of the top five altogether with sixth- and eighth-place finishes, respectively. It’s a particularly disappointing finish for the Owen Wilson-starring “Marmaduke,” as the family film was the widest new release of the weekend by a significant margin of over 300 theaters. Rounding out fourth and fifth place were last weekend’s “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” and “Sex and the City 2.” Upcoming Releases Action is the name of the game next weekend as the Bradley Cooper-starring “The A-Team” and the remake of “The Karate Kid” enter the box-office arena. Lee DeWyze ‘Can’t Complain’ About ‘Beautiful Day’ Debut Sales

‘This is the first season we did a cover song for the finale, whatever part that has to do with it,’ ‘Idol’ champ speculates. By James Montgomery Lee DeWyze Photo: MTV News Lee DeWyze’s reign as “American Idol” champ may have gotten off to a less-than-stellar start with the #12 debut of his coronation single on Billboard ‘s Digital Songs chart. DeWyze’s “Beautiful Day” sold around 100,000 copies, nearly 25 percent less than last year’s champ, Kris Allen, did with his post-“Idol” single, “No Boundaries.” But DeWyze isn’t ready to turn in his crown just yet — far from it, in fact. “You can’t complain about that, regardless of what it is,” DeWyze told MTV News. “But this is the first season that we did a cover song for the finale, and that’s obviously different from past seasons, whatever part that has to do with it. … There [were] things presented, and, you know, that was the right song for the moment, I felt. And I’m glad I did it.” While DeWyze’s version of the U2 tune hasn’t exactly lit the charts on fire, a #12 debut is nothing to sneeze at. And according to Nielsen SoundScan, four of his other “Idol” covers — “Hallelujah,” “The Boxer,” “Everybody Hurts” and “Simple Man” — charted in the top 200. His duet with runner-up Crystal Bowersox on “Falling Slowly” also made the charts. So it’s a solid, if slightly underwhelming, beginning for the new champ, one that he hopes to build on with the release of his post-“Idol” album , which is already shaping up to be a far different affair than anything his fans got to hear on the show. Because, honestly, DeWyze is getting a little tired of playing covers … he’s ready to make his own music. “I’m definitely going to have things on the album that you probably haven’t heard from me on the show,” he said. “It’s my time to be who I am now, and express that through an album. And it’s going to be awesome, it’s going to be fun and I’m really looking forward to it. This is what I’ve always wanted to do.” Are you excited for Lee’s debut album? Tell us in the comments! Lady Gaga’s ‘Alejandro’: The Summer Jam Of 2010?

Song came out last fall, but video is on the way — and who would bet against Gaga? By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Interscope Records Sure, it’s from an album that came out last year, but that doesn’t mean you should bet against Lady Gaga’s “Alejandro” in the Summer Jam Sweepstakes . After all, there are about a million compelling reasons why it could very well be the biggest song on the beaches, chief among them this one: At this point, why bet against her? Yes, in her meteoric rise to the top of the pop world, there’s not much Gaga hasn’t accomplished, though a surefire summertime smash may be one of them. “Paparazzi” started picking up steam in the summer of 2009, but due mostly to scheduling, LG has yet to release a single during tanning season. Until now, that is. Because “Alejandro” is primed and ready as the third single from her massive Fame Monster album, and thanks to a high-profile (and slightly controversial) performance of the tune on “American Idol” and sure-to-be discussed video in the works (it’s due next month), it wouldn’t surprise us to see Gaga topping the charts this summer, which, by proxy, would all but cement the song as the official soundtrack to the bikini months. There’s plenty to love about the song, too: From the sparkling, slightly Spanish production work of frequent collaborator RedOne to the goofy accent Gaga adopts for the tune, it’s very much an over-the-top delight, and we’d be remiss if we didn’t point out just how much it reminds us of Madonna’s easy, breezy “La Isla Bonita,” which was a hit way back in the summer of ’87. And let’s face it: If there’s one song that will serve as the score to your summer-long fling with a dreamy-yet-slightly-distant exchange student (“I know that we are young, and I know that you may love me/ But I just can’t be with you like this anymore, Alejandro “), well, this is probably it. So while it faces some stiff competition — from the likes of Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” and the B.o.B/ Hayley Williams team-up “Airplanes” to name just two — “Alejandro” feels like a strong contender to become the song of summer 2010. And if/when it does, it’ll only further illustrate the fact that Lady Gaga can basically do anything. Like we said, why would you bet against her? Vote for the summer jam of 2010 in the MTV Newsroom now, and stay tuned all week for more on the hottest songs of the season. Related Videos Who Will Have The Song Of The Summer?

B.o.B’s ‘Nothin’ On You’ Came Together ‘Magically,’ Smeezingtons Say

‘We’re melody guys, we sing,’ Phillip Lawrence says of production trio, which includes Bruno Mars. By Jayson Rodriguez Photo: MTV News The making of B.o.B’s breakout hit “Nothin’ on You” was a group effort, according to the song’s producers. Bruno Mars , who is featured on the track, said he and his production partners, Phillip Lawrence and Ari Levine — together they comprise the Smeezingtons — collectively pieced together the music that would eventually top the Billboard Hot 100 chart. “Me and Phil always had that hook,” Mars told MTV News, spontaneously breaking out into the chorus that is helping to make him one of music’s buzzed-about names. “It was a different melody at first, though,” Lawrence added. “So one day our other partner — the Silent Bob of the Smeezingtons — Ari, he walked into the studio and said he programmed the drums [over],” Mars explained. “It had this old-school hip-hop beat. I said, ‘Gimme the piano,’ and that was the first thing I started playing. Magically, that melody worked with this track we were doing.” The result, of course, was “Nothin’ on You,” which landed atop the charts this year and has become an early contender for song of the summer. Now, the production trio’s services are increasingly in demand. Among the artists they’re hoping to get in the studio with is Keri Hilson, who’ll be prepping her next album. Apart from B.o.B, the Smeezingtons also recently worked with Gnarls Barkley’s Cee-Lo on Mars’ debut EP, It’s Better If You Don’t Understand, and are hoping to get back in the lab with him. (“He’s incredible,” Mars said of Cee-Lo.) And their remix of K’Naan’s “Wavin’ Flag” has been selected as the Coca-Cola anthem for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The Smeezingtons intend to apply the same principles that have brought them success so far to future projects, including Bruno Mars’ forthcoming full-length debut. “We’re melody guys, we sing,” Lawrence explained of their sound. “That’s kind of our main focus, to have really good, memorable melodies. We’ll go into the studio, and [Mars will] start playing the piano and I’ll start freestyling or vice versa. We’re heavily influenced by the ’80s [sound].” Are you looking forward to new material from the Smeezingtons? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists B.o.B

Facebook Group Vows to Vote Justin Bieber Out of Male Gender

Bad news, teenage girls around the world: If a certain Facebook group gets a few more signatures, Justin Bieber will no longer be a member of the male gender. As you can see below, someone has started a page that questions whether or not this 16-year old singer deserves to be considered a man. While it doesn’t list the qualities that make his masculinity questionable, it’s safe to assume that bowl cut sits atop the list… Bieber has sky-rocketed to fame over the last few months. His album is number-one on the charts and he’s shown no hesitation to take on Miley Cyrus , Disney and anyone that stands in his way. How will Justin respond to this calling out of his manhood? Likely with a laugh, possibly with a record-number of female a$$ tapping for a guy his age. Anything is possible with Bieber. He performed at the Juno Awards in Canada over the weekend, and we’ve posted a few photos from the concert below: Should Justin Bieber be booted from his gender? Sound off now! [Photos: Splash News]

‘Green Day Rocks Broadway: American Idiot’ Goes Behind The Scenes Of Musical

MTV gives you a peek at rehearsal footage and interviews with the cast. By James Montgomery Green Day at “American Idiot” on Broadway Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images The Broadway version of Green Day’s “American Idiot” doesn’t officially open until April 20, but Friday night (April 16), MTV gave fans an exclusive look into the making of the punk-rock opera when it aired “Green Day Rocks Broadway: American Idiot.” The show detailed the long journey from the recording of the Idiot album in 2003 to rehearsals at New York’s St. James Theatre and, at every step of the way, the pressure to deliver the goods was off the charts. “Right around 2003, I think, as a band, we wanted to have a monumental moment. We wanted to make a concept album, we knew that,” Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong explained. “Politically, when we were writing it, American Idiot was trying to make sense out of a big mess. We were trying to find something to believe in. It’s about people becoming lost and trying to find their way. And I think that’s been going through our songs since 1988.” Armstrong said that, to a man, Green Day always believed that Idiot should end up on the stage, but they didn’t think they’d ever find the right team to help that transition. Until they met “Spring Awakening” director Michael Mayer, who took on the project and guided it through an initial run at the Berkeley Repertory Theater in California last year. “This album is our baby. To see it get put in the hands of other people, it’s great. We’ve always thought that somehow there should be some sort of stage version, because that’s what was going on in our heads,” Armstrong said. “[And] Michael really stuck to the heart of the album, which are the characters, like Jesus of Suburbia. But he also created new characters by using different, little subliminal things that we put in special packaging. Like the character Tunny, it’s a brand-new character. Will, it’s a brand-new character, too.” Through rehearsal footage and interviews, we met the Broadway cast , which features “Spring Awakening” star John Gallagher, Jr as Johnny (the so-called “Jesus of Suburbia”), Michael Esper as Will, Stark Sands as Tunny, Tony Vincent as St. Jimmy and Rebecca Naomi as Whastername. It’s a big, diverse collection of talent, but they all had one thing in common: a mutual love for the American Idiot album. “I can remember just driving around in my mother’s minivan, and just cranking that record as loud as it would go,” Gallagher said. “And really, just feeling understood, and there was this direct line of communication that I felt coming from that record.” “The album is really like a rallying cry for our generation,” Mary Faber, who plays Heather, added. And though some of the characters were created by Mayer, Armstrong said what resonates most to him about the musical — and, what he thinks fans will relate to — is that they’re close to his own heart … and probably yours, too. And, at the end of the day, that’s what the stage version of “American Idiot” is really all about. “Those people remind me of my friends, and they remind me of myself,” Armstrong said. “I guarantee that what’s presented on stage someone will absolutely be able to latch onto,” Vincent added. ‘American Idol’ Elvis Week: What Should The Contestants Sing?

‘Idol’ brings back the songs of Elvis Presley for the first time since season 5. By Eric Ditzian “American Idol” top 9 Photo: FOX “American Idol” resurrected its seventh-season Lennon/McCartney theme for last week’s broadcast. On Tuesday (April 13), “Idol” is bringing back the musical stylings of Elvis Presley for the first time since season five. Back in 2006, eventual champ Taylor Hicks busted out “Jailhouse Rock,” runner-up Katharine McPhee’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love” landed her in the bottom two and Chris Daughtry’s “Suspicious Minds” got him voted off the show. This time around, will recent judges’ save Michael Lynche calm the “Suspicious Minds” of voters? Will Tim Urban stand up and tell the judges, “Don’t Be Cruel”? Which “Idol” hopeful is headed straight for “Heartbreak Hotel”? Let’s take a look at which tunes we’d like the contestants to sing on Tuesday’s show. Crystal Bowersox Is there any way to integrate a theremin into an arrangement of an Elvis tune? No doubt there is, but let’s hope MamaSox — and, for that matter, Lee Dewyze — leaves the oddball instruments backstage this week and gives her vocals top billing instead. To that end, we want to see Crystal go minimalist, returning to her gal-with-a-guitar roots — ’cause those are beautiful roots! Before the King turned “I Don’t Care if the Sun Don’t Shine” into a jaunty hit, Patti Page delivered a sultry version of the tune. Using her version as inspiration, and replacing horns with her acoustic strumming, Bowersox would knock ’em dead after two straight so-so performances. Lee Dewyze Dewyze’s finest performance of the live shows was his R&B Week take on Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose’s “Treat Her Like a Lady”: a full-throated rock version that had us finally seeing why the judges were so enamored of the guy. We want to see more of the same. Dewyze should take Elvis’ swinging “A Mess of Blues,” tamp down on the rhythm-and-blues verve, electrify the whole thing and ask every single member of the “Idol” house band to pitch in with the effort. Just don’t invite the dude with the bagpipes back, OK? Siobhan Magnus Two words: “Hound Dog.” Seriously. Magnus is at her best when she’s making out-of-nowhere choices and presenting them in unexpected ways. The 19-year-old Cape Cod native should grind this tune to a near halt, focus on its bluesy center, and deliver a dark, smoky take on this 50+-year-old classic. Michael Lynche Big Mike is going to have to bust out a scorcher, lest he follow in the footsteps of last year’s judges’ savee, Matt Giraud, and be voted off for a second straight week. Lynche possesses one of the season’s most powerful, expressive instruments, and we suggest he put it to good use with “Heartbreak Hotel.” Mind you, Presley’s 1956 #1 hit comes with its share of pitfalls, including the possibility of having Simon Cowell compare you to a soused karaoke crooner. To avoid that fate, Big Mike should go for a more flowing arrangement over which his vocals can rise and fall. Casey James The easy pick here would be “Jailhouse Rock,” but that’s what Hicks performed in ’06, and even though he won the season, James should really not follow any example set by the captain of the Soul Patrol. Rather, we see an upbeat, electric-guitar-heavy take on “A Big Hunk o’ Love” or “Mystery Train” as the perfect fit. After the slow-burning “Jealous Guy” last week, it’s time for some straightforward rock from Goldilocks. Katie Stevens Last week’s “Let It Be” pulled Stevens out of the bottom three after two straight trips to that dreaded territory. How to build on that success? Stay with an ultra-recognizable ballad: “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” The worry here is that the judges won’t view the 17-year-old’s rendition as believable. But if she sings with even half the emotion she did last week, that shouldn’t be too much of a concern. Aaron Kelly After weeks of sleepy ballads leading up to last week’s bottom-three-inducing “The Long and Winding Road,” Kelly would be wise to skip something like “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” and go in for a lively tune on Tuesday. Not too lively, of course, which is why “Suspicious Minds” would work well. Pay no mind to the fate of Daughtry. The song’s kind of corny, but everyone loves it nonetheless. Kind of like Kelly himself, come to think of it. Andrew Garcia Garcia is the most confounding contestant of the season. Were we wrong to think he was a contender? It hardly matters at this point. He’ll be gone from the “Idol” stage soon enough, and until then, we’ll keep encouraging him to select the poppiest tune possible for each week’s theme, hoping to catch a little of the magic we heard back during Hollywood Week. Presley’s “All Shook Up” is a fun, high-energy ditty, and if Garcia isn’t going to wow us anymore, the least he can do is take us for an enjoyable minute-and-a-half ride. Tim Urban The dimpled wonderboy finally escaped the bottom three last week on the strength of his not-completely-awful “All My Loving.” We suggest more of the same: the King’s 1956 hit “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You.” The slow tempo won’t ask too much of Urban and the lyrics can be directed right at those teen girls voting for him every week: He wants them, he needs them, he loves them.
