Take a look at the nitty-gritty details of transforming a hotel lobby into an intergalactic fantasia. By Gil Kaufman Crew members assemble the 2011 VMA black carpet Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — It takes an army to build the massive set for the 2011 VMAs . And over the course of the last week, that tireless militia has been working around the clock to transform the lobby of the J.W. Marriott hotel in downtown Los Angeles into the intergalactic fantasia that will greet stars on Sunday night. The production has taken over just about every corner of the lobby, with lighting designers hanging a series of shimmering white curtains laced with more than 300 twinkly lights over a space that was previously a couch-filled lounging area. They’ve also laid down more than 12,000 square feet of black carpet throughout the lobby, covering the nearly 18,000 square feet of real estate the hotel has ceded to the production. Watch the black-carpet live stream to see the action as it unfolds! The first thing fans will see when they tune in to the VMA pre-show is the space-age “portal” celebs will be stepping through, a series of four undulating white shapes, the tallest of which is more than 16 feet high. That will eventually lead them to a 100 -foot long, glittering paparazzi plaza, where the night’s biggest names will face a sea of flashes. That space will be blazed by 1,700 silver-tipped incandescent bulbs that will light up the A-listers for their close-ups. VMA pre-show production designer Scott Storey promised that viewers at home would not see the same old “step-and-repeat” space they always get at the average awards show, and he wasn’t kidding. His vision of eight rib-cage-like towers that will “hug” the talent loom large, their wavy forms broken up by more than 40 pop-art-esque angular “pow” signs for this year’s awards show. The production crew also ensured that the whole thing would look fabulous by laying sheets of black plastic over more than 300 windows and doors on the front and back of the hotel. The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Dave Matthews Band Caravan events, Afro-Punk Fest with Das Racist, final Summerstage show and many more succumb to approaching storm. By Terri Schwartz Hurricane Irene’s western edges begin hitting the North Carolina coast Photo: NOAA/National Hurricane Center New Yorkers: Trade your earplugs for some frozen dinners and a couple seasons of your favorite TV show on DVD, because chances are the concert you bought tickets to this weekend has been canceled. With Hurricane Irene tearing her way up the East Coast, many bands and venues that had shows planned in areas likely to be hit by the bad weather conditions are either rescheduling or canceling the gigs in anticipation of the storm. Forecasts are predicting the hurricane will affect states including South Carolina and Virginia and on all the way up to the eastern coast of Canada through Monday. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has declared a state of emergency, and the city’s transit system will be completely suspended beginning at noon on Saturday, which is having a direct impact on previously scheduled NYC concerts. A spokesperson for the Bowery Presents confirmed to MTV News that the Dave Matthews Band Caravan events at Governors Island on Saturday and Sunday have been postponed. New dates have not been announced, but ticketholders are being encouraged to attend the event on Friday (August 26) instead. Of course, it’s also unclear whether bands that were set to play alongside DMB at this weekend’s concerts will be around to perform at a later date. The Roots were supposed to perform Saturday, and Gogol Bordello were slated to perform Sunday . The Afro-Punk Fest was also a casualty of Governor Cuomo rescinding all event permits for the weekend. “The Afro-Punk festival has been barred from holding any public assembly in Commodore Barry Park this weekend. Afro-Punk staff have been meeting with officials and sponsors to try and avoid cancellation but have had to cancel this weekend’s festival due to safety concerns,” the festival planners said in a statement. “The event organizers are regrouping to plan the next steps and will keep the public updated.” Himanshu Suri of Das Racist, who was to perform at the festival, apologized to his fans over Twitter and said he might fly out to St. Louis early to avoid missing that gig as well. Fellow Afro-Punk performer Chaz Bundick of Toro Y Moi similarly apologized in a tweet . Fans planning to see ZZ Top perform in Westbury, New York, on Sunday are in luck, because the show has only been delayed until Monday, August 29, Pollstar is reporting. But fans that can’t make the new date will be refunded; the same goes for ticketholders who planned to attend Saturday’s now-canceled Bill Medley with Paul Revere & the Raiders concert. The last of the free Central Park Summerstage shows this season, set for Sunday, has been rescheduled. Jagged Edge, Avant and Melanie Fiona will perform on September 21 instead, according to Brooklyn Vegan . On Thursday, the Museum of Modern Art’s PS1 announced on Twitter that their Saturday night Warm Up outdoor music series would go on in spite of the forecast. But on Friday afternoon, they tweeted a follow-up, saying, “Sadly, we have to cancel.” At press time, many Broadway shows were set to go on, though Entertainment Weekly reported that all Saturday and Sunday performances of “The Lion King” and “Mary Poppins” have been canceled. Many events are being canceled and rescheduled outside of the New York area, as well. Journey’s concert at Jiffy Lube Live on Sunday has been postponed to September 4, MTV News confirmed with a Live Nation spokesperson. As a result of the date change, Foreigner will be unavailable to perform on the new date. (All tickets will be honored on the new date.) Unfortunately, fans planning to attend Saturday’s Silopanna Music Festival in Crownsville, Maryland, are out of luck, because the festival has been canceled and won’t be rescheduled, according to Pollstar . (Refunds are being issued at points of purchase.) Kenny Chesney’s Sunday concert at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts, has been moved up to Friday (August 26), the country singer announced on his website . The Boston Herald is reporting that Sunday’s Rockstar Energy Drink UPROAR Festival show at the Comcast Center in Mansfield, Massachusetts, has been moved back two days to August 30. And the Essex Music Festival in Essex, Massachusetts, has been rescheduled to September 3, The Gloucester Times said.
In its infinite wisdom, Sony Pictures has put up The Gadfather on YouTube in its entirety. The whole movie is available to watch (almost) commercial free as well. This move is likely a result of the partnerships struck between YouTube and several major studios, including Sony, to offer more premium movies for rent and purchase Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : The Next Web Discovery Date : 24/08/2011 19:58 Number of articles : 2
US Banks take in over $38 billion in overdraft fees, which equate to more than 75% of the fees they charge on consumer deposits period. With the economy so tight these days, do you really have additional money to throw out the window? As I often remind my clients, banks are not charities; they will capitalize off of you as much as you allow them to. Sure it’s highway robbery to be charged an average of $35 for taking a quick swipe at McDonald’s, but the bottom line is if you didn’t have the money in your account, it’s your fault. Banks don’t care if the kids where whining about a happy meal. Your negligence just cost the family $35 for a toy that costs $0.035 cents (yes, less than a nickel) to produce. If this happens to you a couple times a month, we’re talking about nearly $1000 a year that could go towards paying down debt, building up emergency savings or even college and retirement planning. So, here are a few ways to avoid those pesky overdraft fees. • Keep your Register Updated . Simply put, if you don’t know how much money is in your checking account right now, then you are at risk of overdrawing your account. Many people falsely believe that keeping a check register in their head is a good idea. It’s inevitable that you will forget something. Instead, make it a habit by entering each check or debit card purchase as it is made. Set aside time when you get home to check your receipts and balance your register. Do this every time you spend, and soon it will be second nature. • Don’t Forget ATM Withdrawals . One of the easiest ways to lose track of your money is to forget to record cash you withdraw from an ATM. It happens to people all the time – they forget to record the withdrawal and when the bank statement comes they find out they have hundreds of dollars less than they thought. Nip this potential problem in the bud by always getting an ATM receipt. Place the receipt in a safe place. When you get home refer to the receipt to enter the withdrawal into your register. • Remember to Record Automatic Payments. Having your utility or insurance company automatically take payments out of your checking account can be very convenient. Overdrawing your account because you forgot to record an automatic payment is unquestionably inconvenient. READ MORE Birdman: Birdbrain Or Businessman? Are You Suffering From “Frugal Fatigue?”
‘That’s the rhythm of the movie in a horror genre,’ director tells MTV News. By Deborah Kim, with reporting by Kara Warner Guillermo del Toro Photo: Andrew H. Walker/ Getty Images It’s a cautionary tale straight out of a mother’s mouth: “If you don’t brush your teeth, monsters will creep into your mouth at night and devour them like candy.” But Guillermo del Toro’s rated-R version is less cavity, more cryptic. Based on a 1973 TV movie with the same name, Friday’s “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark,” starring Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce, features the same hollow whispers from menacing monsters trapped behind brick fireplaces, only now those creatures are out for innocent, bright-white baby teeth. But even with del Toro’s new spin on what he said was the scariest movie he’d ever seen as a kid, the producer told MTV News some things always stay the same. “In horror films, there are only two dynamics. One is what I call hide and seek, meaning there’s a lot of tension. If you’re searching, you’re really tense about opening the door and somebody jumping out of the closet that was hiding. “And if you’re hiding in the closet, you’re really afraid when you hear footsteps nearby,” he added. “And then tag, when the person finally comes out, and you’re going to chase them to tag them.” With a mind as complicated and fantastical as Pan’s Labyrinth, you’d expect del Toro to have a more intricate stream of thought. But the method behind his moviemaking is simply, well, simple. “I do sort of a tag, hide and seek, hide and seek, hide and seek, tag, tag, tag,” he explained. “So that’s the rhythm of the movie in a horror genre. You just pace it like that.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Poor performance of ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ may have influenced studio. By Eric Ditzian Johnny Depp Photo: WireImage As cinematic collaborators go, there are few in Hollywood who can match the storytelling cred and box-office clout of Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinski. The duo has delivered a trifecta of “Pirates of the Caribbean” films, taking the property from hokey amusement-park ride to multibillion-dollar franchise juggernaut. Last fall, well before their kooky, captivating animated adventure “Rango” opened to $38.1 million domestically, Depp and Verbinski announced their next live-action collaboration would be “The Lone Ranger,” a project Depp and Disney had been trying to get off the ground for years. Now, quite surprisingly, Disney has shut down the production amidst concerns about a Western-themed film with a budget north of $200 million. Deadline reported the development on Friday, and the Los Angeles Times followed up on Monday (August 15) with further details about the stoppage. The Times reports the “Lone Ranger” budget could have ballooned to $250 million at a time when studios are looking to keep costs under control, even as a heavily reliance on CG effects drives those costs up. “It’s our intention to take a very careful look at what films cost,” Walt Disney Co. Chief Executive Bob Iger said on a conference call with analysts on Tuesday, according to the Times. “And if we can’t get them to a level that we’re comfortable with, we think that we’re better off actually reducing the size of our slate than making films that are bigger and increasingly more risky.” But there’s also little doubt that Disney was influenced by the performance of “Cowboys & Aliens,” a Western that faltered at the box office this summer despite A-list talent in front of and behind the camera. After the expensive, Harrison Ford-starring action flick opened to just $36.2 million during its first weekend, industry insiders fully anticipated that studios would shy away from the genre. “There is no getting around the fact that the Western-sci-fi genre mashup has been a terrible failure in Hollywood,” Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations, told MTV News at the time. “Expect studios to stay far away from this genre in the near future.” Not even Depp and Verbinski — and their long-standing relationship with Disney — were immune to Hollywood’s growing understanding that big-budget Westerns just aren’t resonating with moviegoers. The move means that unless a new approach (and a new budget) can be worked out, Depp won’t get to bring Tonto, the Lone Ranger’s dutiful sidekick, to the screen, despite years of involvement with the project. Armie Hammer, of “Social Network” fame , was set to play the Lone Ranger himself. “This is the origin of Lone Ranger,” producer Jerry Bruckheimer told MTV News in March 2010, “so you’re gonna see how the Lone Ranger became the Lone Ranger. He was a Texas Ranger, and how he became the Lone Ranger.” Are the chances that audiences get to see that origin story in theaters totally dead? The Times floats an optimistic note, citing other projects shut down because of high costs, like Denzel Washington’s “Unstoppable,” that were resurrected at the last minute. For now, though, it seems more likely Depp would reprise his “Pirates” role of Jack Sparrow than step into Tonto’s boots — though even a fifth seafaring adventure is uncertain at this point. “It boils down to story, script and filmmaker,” Depp said earlier this year about “Pirates 5.” “It’s not something where I would say, ‘Let’s shoot it next month to get it out by Christmas 2012.’ We should hold off for a bit. They should be special, just like they are special to me.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
