In January, as news of the show’s creative and safety issues turned the then $65 million production into one of the Great White Way’s most spectacular disasters, we admitted that while there were some enjoyable aspects, you were better off popping in a DVD of a Tobey Maguire “Spider-Man” flick than trekking to New York to see the musical. What a difference a few months — and a new creative team — makes. Out went Julie Taymor, in came writers like comics vet Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa , and the results are just what the web-slinging wonderboy needed. We’re not the only ones who feel that way. As “Turn Off the Dark” officially left its preview phase behind and opened on Tuesday, reviews have been pouring in, and many have been positive. Not all, mind you — not even close. Unsurprisingly, “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” remains as divisive as ever. Here’s what the critics have to say. The Overall Changes “[It] has deteriorated from mindblowingly misbegotten carnival-of-the-damned to merely embarrassing dud. Awash in a garbage-gyre of expository dialogue pumped in by script doctor/comic-book vet Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, its lavish stage pictures turned to colloidal mush by director Philip William McKinley and choreographer Chase Brock, Spidey 2.0 is indeed leaner and more linear, and its story has been brutally clarified: It’s now all too clear how very, very little was there in the first place. The ex-”CSI” actor was arrested in Los Angeles for what police call “a few pills” of the drug ecstasy.Gary got popped when police received a report that he crashed his car into two park cars around 3:30 AM. J.J. Abrams’ film is an antidote to the ’emotional-vitamin deficiency’ brought on by ‘low-cal’ superhero sequels, one critic writes. By Eric Ditzian Description: Joel Courtney, Ryan Lee and Riley Griffiths in “Super 8” Photo: Paramount From the Spielbergian nostalgia factor to the first-rate performances of a group of largely unknown young actors to the ultra-satisfying reveal of the monster, we’ve got plenty of reasons you should check out “Super 8” this weekend. But we’re not alone in our full-throated support of director J.J. Abrams’ ode to ’70s-era adolescence and alien invasion flicks. Based on a wholly original idea (a true rarity in an era of iconic superheroes, wizards and alien bots) and with no A-list talent in front of the camera, “Super 8” has nonetheless been nabbing overwhelmingly positive reviews and is expected to earn around $35 million over the weekend. While some critics have suggested the film’s ultimate mystery remains disappointing when finally revealed, far more have been raving about the flick’s throwback vibe, efficient storytelling, and satisfying emotional and cinematic similarity to movies like “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” Read on for a deep dive into “Super 8″ reviews. The Story ” “Super 8” centers on Joe (Joel Courtney), a middle-schooler who has lost his mom and is spending his summer helping his chum Charles (Riley Griffiths) make a zombie movie. The Peas and Swift took to Twitter to apologize to fans after a star-studded NYC charity show was postponed due to bad weather on Thursday. By Jocelyn Vena Black Eyed Peas Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images The weather just didn’t want to cooperate with the Black Eyed Peas, Taylor Swift and the other artists slated to perform in New York’s Central Park on Thursday night at a concert to benefit the Robin Hood Foundation anti-poverty organization. After a number of delays, and before anyone could take the stage, the Concert 4 NYC had been canceled. The show, which had been slated to take place on Central Park’s Great Lawn and was expected to draw an audience of approximately 60,000 fans, initially was just delayed but concert promoters eventually decided to pull the plug on the event as the weather worsened and thunder and rain rolled in, Billboard.com reports. Among the other acts that had been scheduled to perform were Debbie Harry, LL Cool J and Natasha Bedingfield. A rep for the concert has confirmed to MTV News that no new date has been scheduled. In a statement, the Robin Hood Foundation said, “The heat wasn’t going to stop them, the rain wasn’t going to stop them, but the lightning — it stopped them. It came down to safety for everyone. Organizers are hoping to reschedule, so ticket buyers should hold onto their tickets. Robinhood.org will have information in the next week or so.” The artists themselves also have apologized to fans for the cancelation. Swift tweeted, “I was like ‘I get to sing with Fergie in NYC?!’ and then there was rain and lightning and they’re like ‘it’s cancelled’ and I was like [sad emoticon].” The Black Eyed Peas, who reportedly performed an intimate show backstage for fans, also took to Twitter to posted about the nixed concert. “I’m so sad the show got postponed,” will.i.am wrote. “Fergie is really sorry it’s not happening we feel horrible,” Taboo added on his Twitter page. “We are devastated and Fergie told me to tweet this she loves u all … I hope that the concert will be rescheduled ASAP, our pea-ple deserve it, my pea-ple from chase and robinhood deserve this NYC we love u.” Related Artists Black Eyed Peas Taylor Swift
