Boston Bombing Suspects Battle Police, Kill MIT Officer; One Suspect Dead, One at Large

Armed with explosives and guns, the Boston Marathon bombing suspects battled law enforcement officers in a Boston suburb early Friday morning. The two men unleashed chaos and killed an MIT campus officer before police took one of the men into custody and the other fled, officials said. The suspect taken into custody later died. Officials identified the man on the run as the “white-hat” suspect, referring to the photos released by the FBI Thursday. Authorities warned he should be considered armed and dangerous. The standoff with the suspects in Watertown, Mass., erupted after the fatal shooting of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer. A transit police officer was also wounded in the Watertown firefight. Officials in Watertown were warning residents to “stay in their homes and not open their doors unless a police officer is there,” according to reports. “There is a terrorist on the loose,” said one officer at an impromptu press conference at about 4:30 a.m. Friday morning, after the intense battle. The suspect at large is believed to be the man who physically placed the bags containing the homemade bombs which killed 3 and injured 170 on Monday. He is described as “dressed in a grey hoodie, light skinned male, brown curly hair,” with international links and having been in the country legally a year. The suspects approached the MIT officer and shot him in head, sources said, then stole the MIT officer’s cruiser, robbed a nearby 7-11 and carjacked a Mercedes. They briefly kidnapped the driver of the SUV, and the suspects threw explosives out the window of the moving car in what was a harrowing and chaotic scene. The dead suspect had an improvised explosive device strapped to his chest and law enforcement sources warned that the suspect on the run may as well. The intense situation in Watertown followed an hours-long lockdown at MIT, where the campus police officer was shot and killed while investigating. A disturbance was reported on the Cambridge campus. It is not clear exactly what, but the suspects are believed to have killed the MIT officer and fled. Even as police swept the campus, there were reports of a violent car chase and then an extremely heavy police presence in Watertown, four miles away. The events began unfolding with reports of shots fired on the MIT campus at 10:48 p.m. ET, and the situation remained “active and extremely dangerous” for hours. It was later reported that a campus officer had been killed. Watertown resident Andrew Kitzenberg described the police shootout outside his house that followed when officials tracked down the Boston bombing suspects . “They engaged in gunfire for a few minutes,” he told NBC News. “They were also utilizing bombs, which sounded and looked like grenades, [during] the gunfight.” “They also had what looked like a pressure-cooker bomb.” Kitzenberg said two people took cover between a black Mercedes SUV and a sedan, and began shooting 70 or 80 yards toward six Watertown police vehicles. “It was a firefight,” the witness added. “There was a long exchange of gunfire.” One of the shooters then ran toward the cops, while the other got into the SUV. The person on foot later fell to the ground, either tackled or shot. The other drove the SUV through the line of police cars at the end of the street, he added. Kitzenberg said that while he had a “very clear view of the shooters,” he couldn’t see their faces but described them as “average size, average height.” Story developing … UPDATE : The two bombing suspects are brothers, aged 19 and 20, and legal permanent U.S. residents of Chechen origin, law enforcement sources say.

A Lil Positivity: Lebron James Supports Fiance Savannah Brinson As She Heads Up Charity Efforts For Underprivileged Girls And Donates 100 Prom Dresses

Savannah is using her platform to do some good in the hood… Lebron James Supports Fiance Savannah Brinson Charity Efforts Savannah Brinson, who is the high school sweetheart and fiance of Miami Heat baller Lebron James, is looking to use her spotlight to do some good. The usually low key mother of two recently ventured out in Miami and in her home town of Akron, Ohio to speak to groups of young, underprivileged girls while also donating prom dresses. via AP Big Story Savannah Brinson is about to marry someone who’s widely considered the best basketball player in the world, which means the level of privacy she’s always craved will surely continue to erode. And after years of fighting that, she has decided to embrace it as reality. Brinson — better known as the fiancée of Miami Heat star LeBron James — is starting to step more into the public eye now, with hopes that whatever level of celebrity she has can be a tool to help children who need some assistance. Her first step in that endeavor was helping to provide prom dresses for about 100 underprivileged girls in her current home of Miami and her hometown of Akron, Ohio, doing so at a pair of events in recent days. “I can’t imagine being in their situation and not have somebody help,” said Brinson, whose wedding is scheduled for this summer. “I really care. It’s really in my soul to help people, and this is the first baby to come from it. There comes a time when you have to give back.” Lebron also spoke out about his soon-to-be wife’s latest efforts, insisting that this was what she was born to do. Ever since James came to Miami in July 2010, Brinson has largely shunned the spotlight, even though her longtime partner — she and the three-time NBA MVP have two sons together and were high school sweethearts — has encouraged her to be as visible as she wants. So in recent weeks, very quietly, she’s starting to step out. And James remains all for that. “I just think she has a knack for being powerful,” James said. “Women are more powerful than men. Her voice and her being my sidekick, her voice is very powerful, especially to these young women who are underprivileged.” At both the events in Miami and Akron, Brinson talked to the girls about her experiences growing up, how her prom night started off as a disaster — bad hair night, thanks to an overzealous stylist who ignored her wishes — and how just about any challenge can be overcome. These two are such a positive example of love in the limelight. We love it!

Florida Crazies: Out Of Pocket Police Sergeant Fired After Bringing Trayvon Martin Shooting Targets To Firearm Training Session

People ain’t isht … According to ABC News: A Florida police sergeant was fired for allegedly bringing Trayvon Martin shooting targets he purchased on the Internet to a firearms training session. Sgt. Ron King, who had been with the Cape Canaveral Port Authority since January 2011, was fired Thursday, authorities said. On April 4, when two fellow cops discovered King intended to use the Trayvon Martin shooting targets in their weapons exercise, they told him “they didn’t think it was appropriate,” said John Walsh, CEO of the Cape Canaveral Port Authority. The next day, he said the officers informed the Port Authority Police Chief, who called in internal affairs. Authorities declined to say whether any of the targets were used. “We want to apologize to the community and the family of Trayvon Martin and don’t feel that this is tolerable or acceptable in any level. It’s something that we’d never want the Port Authority to be involved in and we truly apologize to the families for the pain that they even had to hear about something like this and had to relive their son’s death again,” Walsh said. SMH. Really???

When The Checks Stop Coming In: $10 Million Lottery Winner Broke, Homeless With 9 Kids And Catching The Bus To Work!

Mo money, mo problems! $10 Million Lottery Winner Broke And Homeless Sharon Tirabassi hit the jackpot nine years ago by winning $10.5 million in the Canadian Lotto Super 7. Today, she has to catch a bus to her part-time job and lives in a rental property that she struggles to maintain… Via NewsOne reports: The 35-year-old mother of six, who has gone from the lavish life of a high roller to now living from paycheck to paycheck, claims that the lack of a financial adviser and uncontrolled spending led to her downfall. Tirabassi says she was lured into purchasing all of the trappings that money can buy: a big house, fancy cars, designer wardrobe. Tirabassi also took exotic trips, threw fancy parties and gave friends and family handouts and loans, which weren’t paid back in most cases. Before she knew it, all of her winnings had evaporated. The once millionaire admits to checking on her bank account every now and then. There were always seemed to be enough zeroes. Tirabassi, who had bounced around from shelter to shelter as a child, admits she was unprepared for the millionaire lifestyle. Before her win, Tirabassi, whose children are from different fathers, had just landed a job as a personal care provider and had just taken herself off the welfare roll. She married her husband, Vinny, in 2006. He brought three children into the union and now they are raising nine altogether. The couple, who do not regret the fun they had spending the winnings, did learn a valuable lesson: “money is the root of all evil.” Vinny told 234Daily, “Money doesn’t buy you happiness. It caused her a lot of headaches,” he says. “She lost a lot of friends, a lot of family.” After Vinny spent 18 months behind bars for driving impaired and causing bodily harm, Tirabassi lost their home. The family was forced to move around quite a bit and finally settled into a modest rental property. Even though it has been nine years since her win, Tirabassi and her husband worry that they could still get robbed if people knew where they lived now, since their Lotto winnings did not make them a lot of friends. When Tirabassi is not taking the bus to work as a personal support worker, she maneuvers a hot pink bicycle to her place of employment. The couple’s Cadillac Escalade, which is one of four vehicles they purchased, is the only remaining one they own. The SUV needs repairs which Tirabassi says they cannot afford right now. After all that has happened, Tirabassi cautions Lotto winners to “try to keep it to yourself. Keep it to yourself and don’t trust anybody but family.” The young woman who claims she is not bitter about losing her millions is just now concentrating on the most important matter at hand and that is raising her children. She tells 234Daily “I’m trying to get them to learn that they have to work for money. Every so often they ask for money and I say, ‘I don’t have any money till payday. You have to wait ’til payday!’” Sad but very common story for lotto winners. But we’re pretty sure some of us wouldn’t trust our family with a ten foot pole when it comes to some lottery money.

Aereo: Internet Startup Draws Fire From Fox as "Threat to Economics of Broadcast TV"

Fox is threatening to convert its entire operation to a pay-TV-only channel if Internet startup Aereo continues to “steal” its over-the-air television signal. News Corp., which owns Fox, said not being paid by Aereo threatens the economics of broadcast TV, which relies on both retransmission fees and advertising. Say what now? Anyone with an antenna can pick up a TV station’s signals for free. However, as we well know, cable and satellite companies typically pay stations and networks for the right to distribute their programming to subscribers. Industry-wide, those retransmission fees can add up to billions of dollars every year. Fees that Aereo is circumventing with its new business model: Aereo takes broadcast signals from the air with thousands of little antennas, recodes them for Internet use and feeds that to computers, tablets and phones. Subscriptions start at a mere $8 per month, which is much cheaper than a cable package, though the service is mostly limited to broadcast channels. Obviously, they were sued VERY fast, but last week, that industry was shaken after a federal appeals court issued a preliminary ruling siding with Aereo. The company contends that it doesn’t have to pay those fees because it uses thousands of tiny antennas to grab the signal, and a judge agreed. “This is not an ideal path we look to pursue, but we can’t sit idly by and let an entity steal our signal,” NewsCorp COO Chase Carey said in response. “But if we can’t do a fair deal, we could take the network to a subscription model.” While most people get Fox through a pay cable TV provider anyway, millions of other Americans rely on the free signal coming over their own antennas. If realized, Carey’s proposal would amount to a sea change in how Fox does business; currently, Fox sends its signal to TV stations across the country. Those stations, 27 of which it owns directly, relay Fox programming such as New Girl and Glee for free in local markets and add their own local news, etc. Carey didn’t explain how TV stations would be affected if Fox shut off the signals it sent to broadcasters and went straight over to a pay TV model. Later, the company said in a statement that any change due to the Aereo situation would occur “in collaboration with both our content partners and affiliates.” Last week, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York said that Aereo could continue its service despite a legal challenge by Fox, ABC, NBC and CBS. In a split ruling, the court accepted Aereo’s position that having individual antennas meant that Aereo wasn’t retransmitting signals illegally for profit. Rather, the appeals court said that Aereo enabled its subscribers to do what they already could on their own with their own antenna and video recorder.

$2 Million Pizza: How One Man Paid WAY Too Much in Bitcoins

What does a $2 million pizza look like? Does it have gold leaf and saffron-infused white truffles? Is the cheese made from the milk of a thousand duck-billed platypuses? Is the sauce the really good Newman’s Own stuff with the garlic and basil? No! None of that! It looks like this: According to Motherboard , the pizza was purchased by Mike Lazio back in May of 2010 using an online currency called Bitcoins (BTC). 10,000 BTC to be exact. At the time, a BTC equaled about .3 cents, meaning that Lazio spent about $30 on it when he took to the Bitcoin forum to make an offer: you order me pizza in the real world, I’ll give you 10,000 BTC. It was the first time a real-world transaction had actually occurred using the virtual currency, and is believed to have sparked the intense inflation that has caused one single BTC to rise to about $234. So do the math: 10,000 BTC at $234 each means that if Lazio had kept that money instead of spending it on Pizza, he’d be sitting on an extra $2.34 million. Hopefully he enjoyed the pizza. I bet he could have found a lot of homemade pizza recipes that cost a lot less than $2.34 million to make.
