Chelsea Handler Was A ‘Winner’ At VMAs, Sarah Silverman Says

Former MTV Movie Awards host says VMA audience isn’t ‘an easy crowd.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Sarah Silverman Photo: MTV News Back in 2007, Sarah Silverman hit the MTV Movie Awards stage as the night’s host and took shots at everyone from Paris Hilton to Jack Nicholson to Lindsay Lohan. At this year’s Video Music Awards , fellow comedian Chelsea Handler — who has already been applauded by Katy Perry — had some fun at the expense of Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and, well, Lindsay Lohan . So how does Silverman think Handler did as a host? “I thought it was good,” she told MTV News while in Toronto promoting her movie “Peep World.” “I think she’s really great on her show, and she did great. I mean, look, the truth is, the VMAs is pretty unwinnable in terms of hosting. … I’m just saying it’s not like at the Movie Awards, [which] is filled with actors and they know to be quiet and listen and be at a show.” So what separates the two MTV awards shows? “The VMAs is like crazy rock stars and stuff and everyone’s talking and the lights are up,” she explained. “You don’t feel it watching it at home, but the lights are on, people are milling about, not sitting down, and no one’s listening to you. It’s like going right back to early days of stand-up. I haven’t talked to her about it, but I bet she would say it’s like when you’re performing and no one’s listening and you’re just focusing and trying to say your material, and I think she had a good time, and I’m not saying it looked like [she was struggling]. “I have so many questions,” she continued. “It looked like with the bit with Lady Gaga [when Chelsea emerged with a house on her head and the garage door didn’t open automatically], it looked like there was a remote control and it didn’t work. [And] maybe I’m reading into it and I could just see her face, like, ‘What the f—?’ I think it’s easy to get daunted. It’s not an easy crowd. You have to know that going in. She was great. She’s a winner.” How do you think Chelsea did? Let us know in the comments! Katy Perry Says VMA Host Chelsea Handler Was ‘Hella Funny’

‘She said some stuff that I was like, ‘Oh my god, girl!’ ‘ singer says. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Audrey Kim Chelsea Handler onstage at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Chelsea Handler had a number of memorable moments as VMA host on Sunday, and Katy Perry , who is engaged to two-time VMA host Russell Brand , is giving the funny lady her seal of approval. There’s no VMA-host beef here. “No, [Russell] didn’t ask me how they compared, but he asked me how she did and I think, contrary to whatever rumors or whatever Internet stuff or whatever, I was in stitches,” she told MTV News. “I thought she was so hella funny.” True to form, not only was Handler funny, she was also a bit controversial, taking lighthearted jabs at everyone from Taylor Swift to Lindsay Lohan. And that resonated with Perry. “She said some stuff that I was like, ‘Oh my god, girl! You’re not gonna get away with this. You’d better watch your back when you get offstage!’ ” she recalled. “She definitely crossed lines, but I love a woman that can cross lines. “I thought some of her skits were hilarious. And even the video stuff that she did, they were really well-thought-out. I don’t know who helps her with some of it … whoever did it … and I know a lot of it’s her ’cause she’s funny just off the cuff,” she continued. She did a great job, fantastic! I would love to see her again.” One of Handler’s real-life pals, Natasha Bedingfield , praised her friend last week before the show. “I love her so much. She’s going to be amazing,” she told MTV News. “She’ll probably be the best one you guys have ever had, I think. She’s just amazing. I love her, and she’s always very honest, and I appreciate that, because there’s always a lot of people who kiss your ass all the time in this business. And it’s just nice to be with someone you just feel comfortable with and you know they’re not going to blow smoke.” Related Videos VMA 2010: Chelsea Handler’s Best Bits Related Photos Top 10 Moments Of The 2010 VMAs Related Artists Katy Perry

Justin Bieber Backup Dancer Teaches MTV News Some Moves

‘He’s always doing good,’ pint-size hoofer Miles Brown says of the Biebs. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Justin Bieber Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage Naturally, the best part about Justin Bieber’s debut VMA performance Sunday was the teen star himself. The hugely popular 16-year-old elicited squeals of delight the moment he set foot on the white carpet, where he and fellow Canadian Drake shared a moment of brotherly love (along with a few hints that the two superstars will be collaborating in the near future). One of the biggest Bieber moments of the night (aside from his winning the coveted Best New Artist Moonman) was his killer live performance outside the Nokia Theatre . Introduced by Kim Kardashian and joined by the night’s host Chelsea Handler — who stood among the screaming masses with a sign that read “Chelsea Loves Bieber” — his “Hard Days Night” -themed performance included “U Smile,” “Baby” and “Somebody to Love.” When we caught up with one of the key elements in that performance — pint-size backup dancer Miles Brown — we asked him how he thought Bieber did. “Aw, man, that’s my bro right there,” Brown told MTV News at Sunday’s show. “He’s always doing good.” The talented youngster then tried to teach our own Jim Cantiello one of his patented Bieber moves, which included a lean to the side and a step back into place. We think we’ll be seeing this kid again really soon. His fans agreed that the performance was well worth it. “I thought it was cool,” fan Genevieve told MTV News from her spot atop a balcony overlooking the stage. “He’s a better performer than I thought.” Reagan agreed, saying, “He really put together a great performance.” What did you think of Bieber’s dance-heavy VMA performance? The 2010 VMAs By The Numbers

Everything from the 130 crew members who built the stage to the one pigeon that flew out of Chelsea Handler’s dress. By James Montgomery Chelsea Handler at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images Well, the 2010 Video Music Awards are in the books (unless they’re still airing a repeat of the show), and while there are innumerable ways to recap an event like this — everything from lengthy, analytical pieces to the much more direct ” Lady Gaga and Eminem won everything” — we figured the best way to do it was just to focus on the numbers. What can we say? Math is awesome. So, before we look ahead to 2011, here’s a look back on the just-completed 2010 show. NBA All-Star Ron Artest Gives VMA Ticket Away To His Daughter

‘It’s all about her,’ he tells MTV News backstage, sitting outside Kanye West’s dressing room. By Shaheem Reid Ron Artest at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Right outside Kanye West ‘s dressing room — before his big performance at Sunday night’s (September 12) Video Music Awards — NBA All-Star and World Champion Los Angeles Lakers forward Ron Artest was sitting down on the floor with his arms on his knees. When asked why he wasn’t sitting in a seat, Ron smiled a huge grin. “I gave my ticket to my daughter,” he told MTV News backstage . “She wanted to see the show. I didn’t get to see it. I let her go. It’s all about her.” While the VMAs were held at the Nokia Theatre, right next door to the Lakers’ home, the Staples Center, Ron Ron said he wasn’t interested in calling in any special favors. “Nah man, I’m good,” he laughed. Ron didn’t get to see any of the show and was very interested in how the proceedings were turning out. There was one MC in particular he wanted to know about. “Did Rick Ross perform?” Artest asked. When told that the Bawse didn’t rock the mic but instead had a special moment with VMA host Chelsea Handler, Ron frowned. “He didn’t do ‘B.M.F.’? Aw, man!” he protested. “They should have let him do that. He would have shut it down. ‘I think I’m Big Meech, Larry Hoover,’ ” Artest rapped, quoting Ross’ “Blowin’ Money Fast” lyrics. Ron did get a chance to see some of the show. He rolled with the G.O.O.D. Music crew to the house to see Kanye West and Pusha T debut “Runaway.” Ron stood with Big Sean and some of ‘Ye’s crew as the Louis Vuitton Don rocked the night. What was your favorite VMA moment? Chelsea Handler’s Best VMA Moments

Host chases Justin Bieber, mocks Lady Gaga, gets visit from Lindsay Lohan By Kara Warner Chelsea Handler hosting the 2010 MTV VMAs Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images From the self-deprecating teaser promos leading up to the show to her haphazard Lady Gaga impersonation to countless brazen one-liners and a skit involving spontaneous impregnation courtesy of a quick dip in the “Jersey Shore” hot tub, Chelsea Handler nailed her first-time VMA-hosting gig. The sassy and outspoken E! talk-show host kicked things off with a pre-taped video, in which she was repeatedly smacked on the rear at random, as well as given a brutal coaching session from Lindsay Lohan. Here’s a rundown of our fave Chelsea Handler VMA moments: Her entrance/monologue Handler dropped down to the stage amidst a group of dancers, wearing a house on her head and a glittery outfit. Once in place to deliver her opening remarks, she told the crowd: “My plan was to stay sober the entire show, but, in an interesting twist, I am as high as a kite. That’s the last time I do a prayer circle with Snoop Dogg.” Speaking about the fact that the last time a woman hosted the show was Roseanne Barr in 1994, Handler poked fun at some of the nominees’ activities that particular year. “Justin Timberlake was in the Mickey Mouse Club pretending he wasn’t having sex with Britney Spears,” Handler joked. “‘The Situation’ was just a classy way to refer to a teenage pregnancy. And Justin Bieber’s mom had just given birth to her 401k plan.” The Best New Artist 2010 Meet and Greet sketches In another pre-taped video segment, Handler hilariously introduced herself to the Best New Artist nominees, including Ke$ha and Justin Bieber. Handler admitted a bit of a crush on the “Tik Tok” singer, and made the clip with Bieber memorable by accusing the teen star of wearing a wig and chasing him down trying to grab it. Hot tub party with the “Jersey Shore” cast Handler showed she had no problem getting wet and wild. When The Situation hollered out to Handler from their famous hot tub and asked her to join in the fun, she actually walked over and climbed into the tub with JWoww, Snooki and Pauly D. Cut to commercial. When the show came back, Handler complained about feeling disgusting, and when she stood up to get out of the tub, had been spontaneously impregnated. By Jayson Rodriguez Kanye West performs during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Redemption seems certain for Kanye West after he premiered a new song during the closing set at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards . Inside Justin Bieber’s VMA Performance: Fans Take Over!

Beliebers cheer on the singer during his debut VMA performance. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber with fans during his 201 VMA performance Photo: Rachel Goldner/ MTV News LOS ANGELES — Just days before the Video Music Awards kicked off, Justin Bieber rehearsed for his big performance at L.A. Live to little fanfare. However, on Sunday night (September 12), Bieber’s fans showed up with super-high Bieber Fevers for the teen star’s debut VMA performance . Not only did Bieber get Kim Kardashian to introduce him and poke fun at their, um, romance, but he managed to get VMA host Chelsea Handler out of the Nokia Theatre for his set with a sign that read “Chelsea Loves Bieber.” While Kardashian and Handler were surprises, the set was much like his rehearsal, an obvious reference to his “Hard Day’s Night”-inspired VMA promo . The big difference this time around was the crowd of screaming fans there for Bieber’s amplified set, which included “U Smile,” “Baby” and “Somebody to Love.” Aside from the crowd right in front of his stage, Beliebers also gathered across the street at the Staples Center to catch a glimpse of the performance. “MTV, make some noise,” Bieber told the crowd before he played “Somebody to Love” and confetti fell into the quad where he was playing. But Bieber didn’t run off the stage as the song finished. Instead, he stood there, gave his dancers and band hugs and excitedly took in his moment as fans cheered on his triumphant debut VMA performance. His fans agreed that the performance was well worth it. “I thought it was cool,” fan Genevieve told MTV News from her spot atop a balcony overlooking the stage. “He’s a better performer than I thought.” Reagan agreed, saying, “He really put together a great performance.” And just like that, Bieber and his fans were whisked away. Lady Gaga Takes Best Female Video At VMAs

Singer’s ‘Bad Romance’ earlier nabbed Best Dance Music Video during pre-show. Lady Gaga wins Best Female Video at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage It looks like that romance wasn’t so bad after all. Less than twenty minutes into the 2010 Music Video Awards , pop icon Lady Gaga — Queen of the Little Monsters — added another jewel to her feathered-mohawk crown, when voters tapped her “Bad Romance” as Best Female Video of the Year. “Thank you so much all my little monsters,” 24-year-old Gaga said after she took the mic from presenter Ellen DeGeneres. “It’s such a dream to be here tonight.” Gaga is nominated for no less than 13 Moonmen and she had already scored wins during the pre-show for Best Dance Music Video for “Bad Romance” and Best Collaboration Video for “Telephone,” her collabo with Beyonc
