By Jocelyn Vena Natasha Bedingfield Photo: MTV News When the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards kick off on Sunday, “Unwritten,” singer Natasha Bedingfield will be rooting for two of her pals, nominee Lady Gaga and VMA host Chelsea Handler . Bedingfield isn’t placing any bets on how many Moonmen the 13-time nominated Gaga will take home, but she says her former tourmate deserves her latest accolades. “I was on tour with Lady Gaga two years ago, and I got to know her a bit, and she’s just fantastic. So, I hope that she wins for one of them, at least, ’cause that’s cool,” Bedingfield told MTV News at the VMA Radio Forum on Friday. “She was opening for me and New Kids on the Block on the road. It was awesome! We were just two girls going around going to different states in America.” While Gaga will certainly have everyone talking by the water cooler on Monday, Bedingfield thinks that Handler will have everyone hoping for a return performance at next year’s show. “[Chelsea] will have to have a lot of outfits too! I love her so much. She’s going to be amazing. She’ll probably be the best one you guys have ever had I think,” Bedingfield said. “She’s just amazing. I love her, and she’s always very honest, and I appreciate that, because there’s always a lot of people who kiss your ass all the time in this business. And it’s just nice to be with someone you just feel comfortable with and you know they’re not going to blow smoke.” So, what is it like to be friends with the sassy comedian? “She’s funny. She lets other people be funny. VMA presenter and reality starlet Kim Kardashian admits that, since host Chelsea Handler called Justin Bieber a “two face” and blamed Kardashian for stealing her man, things have been tense. “Chelsea and I have this, you know, [beef],” she joked at a QVC Fashion’s Night Out event in New York on Friday (September 10). “I used to like her. We’re on the same network, but now it’s just, you know … we can’t really be in the same room together. It gets really bad on the E! studios. They have totally roped off Chelsea on one section, me on the other. You know, it’s, I don’t want to talk about it.” Handler has been quite open about her discomfort with Bieber’s love-’em-and-leave-’em style. “He’s using the flirty card with everybody he meets, and I’m not gonna fall for that,” she said. “I’m 35 years old. I only have about five good years left in me, and I’m not going to waste my time on that guy.” While Kardashian might not be excited to run into Handler on Sunday night, she is looking forward to the possibility of her pal, Bieber, taking home a Moonman for Best New Artist. “That’s amazing! I wish him the best of luck,” she said. “I hope he wins it. Now, the pair are set to release a mixtape together — which Kingston teased would feature Biebs’ sweet vocals and some rhymes. “It should be out in, like, three weeks,” Kingston told MTV News. “It’s amazing! It’s the exclusive. Justin Bieber, Sean Kingston, it’s called Our World. It’s amazing.” Kingston even teased a song or two fans will hear on the soon-to-be-released mixtape of covers. “We did [Travie McCoy’s] ‘Billionaire.’ We did [Soulja Boy Tell’em’s] ‘Pretty Boy Swag.’ We did so much stuff. We just took the beat over and made it our own.” In fact, Bieber, who has rapped at times, will be displaying his skills on the mixtape. “Yeah, he’s doing some rapping,” he teased. “[He’s] pretty tight, nice for someone who doesn’t do it that much.” Until the mixtape hits the shelves, Kingston is gearing up to support his pal at the VMAs, where Bieber is performing and up for Best New Artist. The talk-show host caught up with MTV News on Thursday (September 9) to reveal that she’s pretty much ready for anything. “I’m pretty good at answering anything you ask me,” she said. “I mean, if I know the answer. If I didn’t, I’ll just bullsh–. Bleep that please,” she laughed. “I forgot I was on a younger person’s network.” Speaking of young people, America’s favorite teen, the VMA-nominated Justin Bieber , is set to take the stage at the show, and he has quite the past with the comedian. By James Dinh Rihanna (file) Photo: Jamie McCarthy/ WireImage Rihanna has ditched her clothes (and her short hairdo) for the cover art of her new single “Only Girl (In The World).” In the photo, which surfaced on Rap-Up.com , the Barbadian pop singer is seen crouched down in a field, wearing nothing but jewelry and holding a rose-embroidered dress that is bright red; her hair is long and wavy and a similar shade. “Only Girl (In The World)” is the first release from the singer’s fifth album, Loud . Earlier this week, Rihanna chatted with fans about the album’s direction , saying, “I made sure not to let you down with my music! You guys are always defending me, so now you’ve got some great songs to justify it. I didn’t want to go backward and remake [2007’s] Good Girl Gone Bad .” In addition to the cover art, the singer’s official website has been revamped to showcase her most recent tattoo, which says “rebelle fleur” (French for “rebel flower”). The New York Post reported that the singer recently shot advertisements for her debut fragrance, Reb’l Fleur, at New York complex Chelsea Piers with the help of Frank Ginsberg. This isn’t the first time that Rihanna has stripped down for a photo shoot. Best New Artist nominee will perform at Sunday’s VMAs. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images Remember when Justin Bieber was just an up-and-coming pop singer who presented at the 2009 VMAs and gave one lucky fan a red-carpet shout-out ? Well, since then, he has become a one-man pop-music sensation by dominating the charts, the airwaves and teen girls’ hearts. Just two months after last year’s VMAs, Bieber dropped his debut album, My World, and never looked back. He followed up the release with his spring 2010 sophomore album, My World 2.0. In the process, the 16-year-old has worked with everyone from Ludacris and Sean Kingston to Jaden Smith and even Kanye West and Raekwon on a “Runaway Love” remix . And let’s not forget: He’s even had an offer to have Mark Wahlberg leave rap retirement to jump on a track with him someday. Bieber’s career has been pretty much controversy-free, though he did have fans, VMA host Chelsea Handler and Bill O’Reilly riled up over his friendship, and subsequent Elle photo spread, with reality starlet Kim Kardashian . There have also been a few fan stampedes. Last November, Bieber had to cancel a Long Island mall appearance after his fans got a little out of hand. That incident was followed by equally zealous fan moments in Paris , New Zealand and Australia . While he’s appeared on the small screen thanks to his own “Diary” special and a stint on “SNL,” he will kick it up a notch later this month on “CSI,” when he plays bad boy Jason McCann. On top of all of that, he met the president , topped Lady Gaga on YouTube , showed his funny side on April Fool’s Day when he took over Funny or Die , hung out with Drake at the Much Music Awards , got a tattoo and released a number of music videos, including his VMA-nominated “Baby,” “Somebody to Love,” “Never Say Never” and “Eenie Meenie.” Now, with a VMA nod for Best New Artist and a highly anticipated VMA performance , whether he wins or loses, he will come out on top, thanks to his upcoming music video for “U Smile,” his 2011 3-D flick and the release of his first book, “Justin Bieber: First Step 2 Forever,” in October. Bieber will find out if all the highs of the past 12 months can land him his first Moonman. Stars of hit film explain why their characters make critical decision By Shaheem Reid Chris Brown and Michael Ealy Photo: MTV News Chris Brown and T.I. ‘s new film “Takers” had another hefty haul this past weekend, bringing in close to $12 million after last week’s $20 million-plus #1 finish. We’ve given you ample time to see it, so now we can reveal a spoiler. Warning: Stop reading now if you haven’t seen the flick. We’ll catch you on the rebound. One of the climatic scenes in the film features brother bank robbers Chris Brown and Michael Ealy having a showdown with the police. The team of “takers” identities has been discovered, and police officers are dispatched to take them out. At the heist-master’s hangout, a jazz club, Ealy arrives and learns that his girlfriend has been murdered by T.I.’s character, Ghost. Minutes later, the police amass in front of the venue. Ealy asks his brother, Brown, whether he wants to leave through the back door or through the front, where a SWAT team is waiting. The duo choose the front, and are subsequently gunned down. You don’t actually see them die, but it is highly implied. So, why not slip out through the back? “I think it was that inevitable circumstance. We had to be like, ‘You know what? We’re gonna get caught, and we don’t wanna do life in prison,’ ” Brown explained about the last scene. “We knew the risk we were taking when we did it. ‘Let’s go out in a blaze of glory.’ ” “I had nothing else to live for,” Ealy said about his character. “Yeah. His girl was all dead,” Brown added. “That’s bad. He didn’t wanna see me get locked up.” Ealy jokingly said his character really wanted to take an alternate escape route, but Brown’s character wouldn’t listen. “I tried to tell him to go through the back door,” Ealy said with a laugh. “But, even the back door, they had us surrounded. But on Sunday night, when she steps up as host of the MTV Video Music Awards , Handler will have more bold names than she could ever dream of skewering at once under one roof, and you can tell she’s excited to be in the presence of such mega-wattage. “She’s pretty successful right about now. She’s got some good music,” Handler said of leading nominee Lady Gaga, who has a record 13 VMA nods . “She’s got a lot going on.” Asked if she were surprised by the baker’s dozen Gaga racked up this year, Handler was not shocked that the dance diva could corral such a mass of nominations, given the sweat she puts into her music and concerts. “I’m not really surprised by anything,” Handler laughed before diving into one her favorite topics, the absurd Internet meme questioning Gaga’s gender. “If you work really hard, I guess you can accomplish anything. Even if that accomplishment is people being confused as to whether you are a male or a female.” The reason stand-up comedians have always done so well at the VMAs is because they’re great on their feet, and given the rapid-fire nature of the roundtable celeb-kebabing that goes on during Handler’s E! show every night, she’s likely to have plenty of quips to drop during Sunday’s broadcast.
