Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law Go ‘Bigger’ In ‘Sherlock Holmes 2’

We caught up with the ‘Game of Shadows’ stars and director Guy Ritchie on London set of the detective sequel. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law Photo: MTV News It’s one thing to breathe new life into a literary icon. Robert Downey Jr. , Jude Law and director Guy Ritchie did that two years ago with “Sherlock Holmes,” a quasi-Steampunk take on Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary detective. The real challenge comes when you have to do it again. The trio are set to give it another go on December 16, when the sequel, “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” hits theaters. MTV News’ Josh Horowitz traveled all the way to the London set of the film to talk to Downey, Law and Ritchie about recreating the magic of the first film and just why Holmes and Watson make for such compelling characters. We also discovered there was consensus among the three men about the approach for this film: bigger. “I’m too close to be objective about this now, but originally when we were constructing this conceptually, we just wanted to make it bigger,” Ritchie said. “We wanted to make it bigger and better, and I’m not sure if you can be more eloquent than that.” Ritchie told us that with the first movie out of the way, he “knows the identity” of the films better than ever and can take everything to the next level. “I supposed I stuck my toe in the water creatively on the last one. I’m probably a little bit more confident about who these guys are,” he said. In “Game of Shadows,” the action jumps into the future a bit, taking place more than a few months after the first film. Watson has moved out of 221 Baker Street, and Holmes is in tough shape and deeply obsessed with one of literature’s greatest villains, Professor James Moriarty, played in the new film by Jared Harris . No reimagining of Holmes would be complete without a take on his arch-nemesis, and Ritchie said that Harris is up to the task. “I’m not saying this because it’s what directors are supposed to say, but I do believe Jared is a fantastic Moriarty, and you are dealing with arguably the most infamous villain in the history of literature, so it’s no mean feat.” For the two heroes of the story, Downey and Law said they could endlessly revisit Holmes and Watson. Asked why, Downey got straight to the point. “The money and the merch!” he laughed Taking a more serious note, Law explained that it’s the chemistry between the two characters that will always be fascinating. “They’re just interesting. They’re very, very interesting. The dynamic is always fresh,” Law said. The pair is so dynamic, in fact, that it’s often hard to tell what kind of reaction a scene between them will elicit. “We’ve done stuff which we’re cracking up over and we think is so funny, and we watch it back over and in fact, it’s very touching,” Law said. “We think, ‘Where did that come from?’ And vice versa, we’ll do stuff we’re desperately trying to make this heartfelt moment, and it’s nothing short of broad and really funny.” “It’s a discovery process,” Downey agreed. She beat out all the boys, including fellow country music superstars Jason Aldean, Brad Paisley, Blake Shelton and Keith Urban. The singer also took the stage in a pink sweater to perform her Speak Now track “Ours,” a simple ballad about love. Swift kept the performance simple, sitting on a big, comfy couch, strumming her guitar. She recently teased on Twitter that she shot a music video for one of the songs off her chart-topping album, with the performance leading to speculation that she was referring to “Ours.” Swift’s win and performance wasn’t the only headline of the night. Nashville’s latest crossover darlings the Band Perry — who recently appeared on Justin Bieber’s holiday album, Under the Mistletoe — were also big CMA winners , nabbing a number of awards including New Artist of the Year as well as Song of the Year and Single of the Year for ” If I Die Young .” “The Voice” coach Blake Shelton won the male vocalist award, while his wife, Miranda Lambert, won for best female vocalist. ‘Hunger Games’ Role Is ‘So Right’ For Josh Hutcherson

‘I had never read a character that was more like who I am as a person,’ he tells MTV News of playing Peeta. By Kara Warner Josh Hutcherson in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate All right, “Hunger Games” fans, are you ready for a little exclusive interview with soon-to-be superstar Josh Hutcherson? We’ve been hinting about it ever since we named Hutcherson “Most Likely to Play a Superhero” as part of our New Class , and the time has finally come to unveil this nifty bit of footage that will have you convinced (if you weren’t already) he’s one to watch in 2012. For those unfamiliar with the talented 18-year-old, he made a splash in Hollywood last year with his buzzed-about performance in the award-season darling “The Kids Are All Right,” and now he’s embodying the pivotal and beloved role of Peeta Mellark in the highly anticipated big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ dystopian best-seller “The Hunger Games.” MTV News was very lucky to catch up with Hutcherson recently, when he discussed the importance of landing the role, what Peeta means to him and his favorite scene to film. MTV News : Talk to us about what the role of Peeta means to you and why you love him. Josh Hutcherson : It’s so crazy. When I read the books, I had never read a character that was more like who I am as a person and had kind of my core values and what I believe in. So it kind of drove me crazy in a way, because I felt like I was so right for it, then I had to go through this crazy audition process. So to finally be making the movie and now we’re finished, it’s like, somebody please pinch me, because I still don’t believe this is actually happening. For me, it’s just an honor to be a part of such a great story. Gary Ross is such an amazing director, and Jennifer Lawrence is perfect, and everyone else we cast was really great. MTV : What was the audition process like? Did you do specific scene work? Hutcherson : For the audition process, I came in the first time and read a few scenes for Gary Ross and [author] Suzanne Collins and some of the other producers involved. Then maybe about a week or so, maybe two weeks later, I came in and did a screen test with Jennifer, where I actually read the scenes with her so they could see how the chemistry worked. Both of them felt really great, but as an actor, you just pick apart every single thing that you do, so for me, I was on pins and needles waiting to find out. And then when I finally found out, my jaw hit the floor. I was so excited. MTV : What were your favorite scenes to film? Hutcherson : It’s very similar to the book. Probably my favorite scenes are all the scenes with myself and Katniss in the cave, because they’re really emotional and you get to see a lot of their relationship develop there, so for me as an actor, I liked that a lot. And then of course all the physical running through the forest — that was really fun as well. MTV : Did you guys get a lot of bumps and bruises from all that stunt work? Hutcherson : There were tons of bumps and bruises, yeah. It was pretty intense. ‘Breaking Dawn’ Trailer: Experts Pick Favorite Scenes

Honeymoon aftermath, Bella and Jacob’s dance and Bella giving birth all get shout-outs from our superfans. By Kara Warner Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit Entertainment Now that we’ve finally seen the latest trailer for “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” and picked our favorite moments , it’s time that we turn the continued swooning and sighing over to our trusted panel of “Twilight” experts to learn what they loved most about the new sneak peek. “My favorite scene … was the feathers in the bed,” TwilightLexicon.com owner Laura Byrne-Cristiano said of the honeymoon aftermath, featuring a sleepy and happy-looking Bella surrounded by feathers from a torn pillow. “That was a moment I think every fan wanted to be there. I was so happy that it was in the trailer, and we know it’s going to be in the movie. It could have been cheesy, and it looks like it’s going to be fun.” “My favorite scene was the dancing scene with Bella and Jacob,” Kara Hassell of TwilightersAnonymous.com said. “I liked it because we [usually] see a lot of action, especially with Jacob and the wolf pack, so it was nice to see a really serious moment between them. I think that their chemistry is great and they do really well.” Kallie Matthews from TwilightSeriesTheories.com went for the more uncomfortable moment. “There were a lot of favorite moments. This is slightly morbid, but [I liked] actually getting to see parts of the birth scene,” she admitted. “I’ve been so curious about how it’s going to play out. The books are just glimpses, and it seems like the movie is going to be that way too, so I’m really glad that Bill Condon is staying true to that,” she explained. “Like I said, morbid.” What was your favorite scene in the trailer? Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz ‘Committed’ To ‘Dream House’ Couple

Producer Ehren Kruger talks about the newlyweds’ performance in the thriller, in our Fall Movie Preview. By Josh Horowitz Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz in “Dream House” Photo: Universal Pictures Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz married in a quiet New York ceremony in June, an idyllic union that presents a stark contrast to their onscreen marriage in “Dream House.” A genre mash-up with thriller and horror elements directed by Jim Sheridan, the film begins with a familiar setup: Craig, Weisz and their daughters move to a new home, only to discover their quarters are nothing like what they expected. From there, though, “Dream House” takes a twist, one that makes viewers reconsider everything they’ve previously seen and which was revealed in a surprisingly spoiler-filled trailer this summer. Click for photos from fall’s biggest flicks! But as producer Ehren Kruger told MTV News recently, that twist is just one in a flick filled with them. If you think you know everything “Dream House” has in store, he made clear that you’re missing all the clues — just as Kruger and the rest of the cast and crew seemingly missed the signs on set that Craig and Weisz’s heated on-camera coupling was the beginning of a trip down the aisle. As part of our Fall Movie Preview, we not only have a chat with Kruger, but the first clip from the film, in which Weisz confesses that she’s certain something is wrong with their new home and Craig promises to hire a priest or “feng shui the place.” Hit play on the video above and the read on for Kruger’s interview. MTV : You’ve got some impressive talent in front of and behind the camera. How did all those pieces of the puzzle come together? Ehren Kruger : It started with the original script by David Loucka, which blended genres in a very interesting way. That caught the eye of Jim Sheridan, and he’s not a director who is known for doing straightforward genre pieces. So he responded to some of the deeper character ideas in the script, and once he became interested, we started developing the script with him and very quickly there were actors like Daniel and Rachel and Naomi [Watts] that were interested in being a part of it, because his reputation is so wonderful with performance. You don’t always get that in genres that are perceived as just a mystery or just a scary movie or just a thriller, so getting involved in this allowed the actors to bring their A-game and challenge themselves performance-wise. MTV : As you said, this is not the type of film that Jim Sheridan normally takes on. Why was he the right guy for the job? Kruger : He’s often dealing with families in an emotional crisis. He really responds to that sort of environment, so while this story has a lot of the scary genre trappings and mystery trappings, at its core it’s really a family that’s in intense crisis. MTV : In terms of developing the script, what are the influences you drew on? Kruger : It shares some genre DNA with movies like “The Others” or “The Sixth Sense” or “Rosemary’s Baby” and movies that really try to cast a spell in terms of mood. In the world of scary thriller mysteries, there are the vampires and the zombies and the mask killers. They are very upfront with what is scary about them. And then there are the more traditional ghost-story antagonists, where their secrets can play something even more sinister. You don’t quite know who is pulling the strings and what to be afraid of. We talked about some of those classic ghost-story influences like “The Haunting” or “The Innocence” or “The Shining,” movies where you are dealing with something you initially think you can fight or combat but then aren’t sure if you can at all. MTV : Tell us about what Daniel brought to the table, how he approached the material and how he made the character his own. Kruger : He’s a very intense person, and it comes across in his roles and on the screen. This is a character who, on the outside, seems like an everyman, a family man, but you come to find out he has a number of demons of his own. Daniel was really able to dig into those and pull off a very intense portrayal of a man trying to protect his family in nearly an impossible situation. It’s a very valiant performance from him. And the chemistry between him and Rachel, which is kind of the core of the film, is really great. MTV : Was their relationship off camera apparent to you on the set? Kruger : They are both very focused actors, so you just figured they were really committed to their performance of this married couple. There is method acting and I guess there is matrimonial method acting. But I wouldn’t say it was apparent during shooting. They were playing the roles as professional, and it went from there. MTV : You show a big twist in the trailer about the murders that took place in the house. How do you make the decision of how much to reveal and how early? Kruger : It’s always a trick with movies that start off seeming like one thing and then turn into something else. In the case of this movie, it turns into something else again. You just have to make the decision of what is the best way to tell the audience that they are going to be getting more than what they think they are getting. You could have a trailer that doesn’t reveal any of the revelations that they will come to find out about — the house where he lives and the family — and then there’s just not quite enough juicy material to sell the movie. You have to provide a little and assure the audience there’s going to be more revelations. MTV : When do you find out who the murderer is in the movie? Kruger : It will be in the first half of the movie that you are getting the revelations that are in the trailer, so there is still half of the movie of mystery to tell. Kanye West And Game Collabos ‘Tainted’ By Amber Rose Disses

‘He said he was gonna give me some beats, but he never did,’ Game says on ‘RapFix Live,’ speculating that lyrics may have upset ‘Ye. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Game Photo: MTV News Game and Kanye West have had quite the chemistry in the studio. But after producing a song on each of Game’s first three albums, the Louis Vuitton Don will not be supplying any music for the West Coast rapper’s upcoming The R.E.D. Album and that may be Game’s fault. “I dunno, I think I dissed Amber Rose while she was with [Kanye] and I think that kinda tainted our relationship a little bit,” Game told Sway on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live” after he was asked when he’d be working with Yeezy again. “I reached out to Kanye at the beginning of the album and I seen him in L.A. He said he was gonna give me some beats, but he never did,” the Compton MC said. “I didn’t take it personal, I got nothing but love for ‘Ye and the things that we did in the past.” The pair first collaborated when West hooked up the beat for “Dreams,” a single off of Game’s 2005 debut, The Documentary. The two then got together again on “Wouldn’t Get Far,” the model-dissing track off Game’s second album, The Doctor’s Advocate, and completed the hat trick in 2008 with “Angel” on the former G-Unit member’s L.A.X. LP. But when the rapper drops The R.E.D. Album on August 23, the streak will end. While Game admitted to some wrongdoing — throwing shots at Yeezy’s former squeeze while the two were together — he insisted that he never directly disrespected Kanye. “I never shoot shots at Kanye, and if I do, it’s always competitive and I’ll clean it up on the next bar because I got a lot of love and a lot of respect for him.” Game also says he isn’t hard-pressed for a Kanye track or feature. “What I’m saying is, I’m not waking up begging to work with Kanye, number one, but if it happens it happens; if it don’t, it don’t.” Sway then asked whether Game’s persistent barbs at Jay-Z had anything to do with the distance between him and Kanye, considering the two are dropping their collaborative Watch the Throne album . Game didn’t think that was a factor, noting that Kanye and Jay have always had a close relationship, and Game has been baiting Hov for years. “I’ve been shooting shots at Jay from the beginning, but worked with ‘Ye throughout,” the Dr. Dre prot

Drake Reveals Lead Take Care Single: ‘Headlines’

‘With this album, I want to tell a whole story,’ Drake tells Rolling Stone. By Alvin Blanco Drake Photo: Getty Images While hip-hop heads are eyeing the throne, more details are being revealed about Drake’s highly anticipated sophomore album, Take Care. After releasing a handful of songs via his blog (including “Marvin’s Room” and “Dreams Money Can Buy”), the Toronto rapper and YMCMB representative reportedly will soon be dropping his new album’s proper lead single “Headlines” and has also divulged info about a few more songs on the project. Drake let loose an obvious clue about his official single with a tweet on July 18 that read simply, “Headlines.” On Thursday, it was confirmed that there is a song called “Headlines” and it was produced by longtime Drake producers and collaborators Matthew “Boi-1da” Samuels and Noah “40” Shebib, according to HipHopDX . Ironically, despite all the speculation on what his new album’s first single will be, Drake expressed his disdain of single tracks. “I hate singles. … With this album, I want to tell a whole story,” Drake told Rolling Stone . “I don’t want people to just hear a piece and judge the album on that.” In the interview, conducted in the Toronto studio where he is recording the album, Drake revealed the titles to three songs: “Shot for Me,” “Free Spirit” and “The Real Her.” “Free Spirit” features Rick Ross, and “The Real Her” features Drake’s Young Money benefactor Lil Wayne. Drake also mentioned his desire to collaborate with an eclectic mix of musicians for Take Care, including R&B crooner Abel Tesfaye of the Weeknd, storied hip-hop producer DJ Premier, and indie rockers Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine’s and producer Jamie Smith of the xx. Take Care is due in stores October 24, which happens to be Drake’s birthday. Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Drake Related Artists Drake

Robert Pattinson Reveals Secret Behind ‘Breaking Dawn’ Sex Scene

‘You have to have some tantric breathing and stuff,’ he jokes to MTV News at Comic-Con. By Ryan J. Downey, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Robert Pattinson at the San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday Photo: Getty Images SAN DIEGO — What kind of preparation went into the steamy love scenes in ” The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part I “? Well, if Robert Pattinson is to be believed, there was very little. “You just get lubed up and jump right into it!” he proclaimed to MTV News while backstage at San Diego Comic-Con shortly after making an appearance on a panel with his “Breaking Dawn” castmates and director Bill Condon. The group answered questions from Comic-Con attendees and treated them to footage from the upcoming flick, which is the second-to-last film adaptation in the epic saga. Fan familiarity with Stephanie Meyer’s “Twilight” novels means anticipation has been high for several elements of “Breaking Dawn,” including a wedding, a birth and perhaps the most anticipated of all: the sex scenes. Smiling broadly, RPattz added: “You have to have some tantric breathing and stuff.” All joking aside, it was pretty clear once Pattinson continued talking that there was, in fact, a bit of planning put into the onscreen depiction of Edward Cullen and Bella Swan getting down to some romantic business. “Everyone always says it about sex scenes in movies — it’s really awkward and blah, blah, blah — but it is!” he pointed out. Ultimately, he likened it to a popular board game. “You’re playing Twister,” Pattinson deadpanned. With “Twilight” mania still in full swing, it might be hard for moviegoers to imagine seeing the chemistry between Pattinson and Kristen Stewart re-created within the context of different characters in another story, but that doesn’t mean Pattinson wouldn’t be up for re-teaming with her in a non-“Twilight” film. “I’d love to. Definitely,” he told us without hesitation. “I don’t know how audiences would respond to it or whatever, [but] I’d love to.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Paris Hilton Walks Out on Good Morning America Interview

Part of the reason Paris Hilton returned to reality TV in The World According to Paris was to show the world she’s all grown up and mature now. Getting up and walking away during an interview on Good Morning America today when questions got tough didn’t exactly project that image. ABC correspondent Dan Harris asked about her show’s abysmal ratings and ho-tel heiress’ declining relevance in an ever-saturated sea of reality stars. Paris Hilton Walks Out on GMA Thrown off and visibly annoyed by this perceived affront on her A-list status, Paris shifted in her chair, looked toward her publicist, then peaced. Tom Felton Calls Keeping Movie Award In His Bathroom ‘An Honor’

‘It’s kind of a prized place in my house, the downstairs toilet,’ he quips backstage about Best Villain award. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Tom Felton backstage at the 2011 Movie Awards Photo: MTV News Tom Felton might not have been interrupted by Mark Wahlberg during his MTV Movie Awards acceptance speech for Best Villain this year, but that doesn’t make receiving the award any less special for him. “Thank you very much, it’s always exciting to be here,” he said in his acceptance speech. “This is very cool. This will look very nice in my downstairs toilet.” When MTV News caught up with Felton backstage after his second straight win, he clarified that his downstairs toilet actually is a pretty important location in his home. “It’s kind of a prized place in my house, the downstairs toilet,” Felton deadpanned. “Consider it an honor.” Though he technically came back to defend the Best Villain title for “Harry Potter,” he said the real reason is because he hadn’t yet seen any of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” yet and wanted to catch the sneak peek at the MTV Movie Awards . “That’s half the reason I’m here,” he said with a laugh. Since Felton hasn’t seen any of the footage yet, he couldn’t tease how “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” would look in 3-D, but he did say it’s something he’s anticipating. “I’m very excited,” he said. “I’m not sure if that’s going to add or subtract to my screen presence.” MTV News has all of the highlights from the 2011 MTV Movie Awards .
