‘Twilight,’ Justin Bieber Rule MTV Movie Awards

Sneak peeks from ‘Breaking Dawn’ and ‘Deathly Hallows’ make a splash at the big show. By Gil Kaufman The cast of “Twilight” at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage Hollywood may have just found the ultimate killer mega-sequel on Sunday night (June 5) when “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” ran the table at the MTV Movie Awards , taking home five big ones, including Best Movie and Best Female and Male performance wins for stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. Not too shabby for a bunch of undead vampires, buff werewolves and the lady who loves them. In the process, the kids from rainy Forks, Washington, nearly blanked the also multiply-nominated cast of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1,” surely giving someone in Hollywood a great idea to stage the ultimate fan-freakout-fantasy-world showdown once the two series wrap up. In the meantime, fans made do with lots of Pattinson and Stewart on Sunday night, along with generous helpings of Taylor Lautner and more Arnold Schwarzenegger illegitimate-kid jokes than anyone imagined from host Jason Sudeikis. With a set that looked like a backlot fantasia , with a ring of fake grass, crystal towers, caves, butterflies, LED lights and glittery, hanging jewels, the stage at the Gibson Amphitheatre was a nod to the “Lord of the Rings” and the fantasy world of movies. And with their hands all over each other, “Friends with Benefits” co-stars Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake proudly handed out the night’s first award, Best Male Performance, to “Twilight” star Pattinson, who beat out love-triangle rival Lautner for the honor. “I really didn’t think I was going to win,” said the perpetually self-effacing undead star, who got a smile but no congratulatory, well, anything, from co-star Stewart. “This is kind of embarrassing now. Zac Efron was crying and stuff in that clip. … Thanks for showing all your support to the movies. See you next year!” Was there any doubt whether Tom Felton would take home the Best Villain award for his truly terrifying performance of blond baddie Draco Malfoy in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1”? Flashing an uncharacteristic smile, the nice English lad said, “This will look very nice in my downstairs toilet,” thanking fans for a decade of support and promising that the final installment will be worth the wait. Poo Cocktail Supreme , a sawed-off arm, the world literally exploding all around you and the cuticle from hell: All worthy nominees, but it was Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never” 3-D concert film that took the Best Jaw Dropping Moment prize. Though it looked like the Biebs wouldn’t be on hand to take home the honor, he made a surprise appearance and thanked his director, manager and family. “But most of all I want to thank my fans. I love you,” said Bieber, sporting white jeans and a blue blazer over a black T-shirt. It wasn’t all just movie magic, though. Funnyman Jim Carrey promised to bring some high-tech shenanigans to the proceedings, and he didn’t disappoint. The “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” star showed up in a green-screen suit that featured a number of high-tech images, but mostly just dogs humping. He was on hand to introduce the Foo Fighters, who lit the stage up with a blistering performance of their new single “Walk,” with a set that included six strobing movie-set klieg lights. Alas, Potter’s Death Eaters had nothing on Bryce Dallas Howard and Xavier Samuel’s showdown with Pattinson in “Eclipse,” which also won for Best Fight. Pattinson bragged about winning the filmed fight, even as Howard apologized for trying to hurt him. “It’s fine. I ripped your head off … and now you’re pregnant!” he said awkwardly, as Stewart cradled her face in her hands in embarrassment at his crack about their co-star’s bulging baby belly. You kind of couldn’t go wrong with the Best Kiss category , especially if you’re on Team Edward. But really? Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman didn’t snag the traditionally Sapphic-friendly smooch trophy? Nope, not when RPattz and KStew are in the mix. Taking the stage for the third time, Pattinson sheepishly said he felt bad because he, well, didn’t really feel like re-creating his smooch with Stewart from “Eclipse.” “You don’t want to kiss me, do you?” he said to Stewart. “Well, I mean, it’s been a long time, and … I think we should finally go for it,” she replied nervously, as the camera cut to a totally psyched Selena Gomez. “There’s someone else in the audience I think will appreciate it a little more,” Pattinson answered, before sprinting out to the crowd and laying a big, wet one on Lautner’s mouth , forehead and hand. When he tried to snag the award from Stewart’s hands, she grabbed it away and he grunted, “I wanna take you backstage!” in what amounts to PDA for these two. Luckily for the nominees in the Best Line from a Movie category , there were no quotable muggles or vampires in the mix, so you can be sure 7-year-old “Grown Ups” star Alexys Nycole Sanchez was going to celebrate her win later that night by getting totally “chocolate wasted.” This is so cool!” squeaked the adorable moppet before reprising her money line. The ladies in the Best Female Performance race were not so lucky, as Stewart beat out the Emmas (Stone and Watson), Jennifer Aniston and “Black Swan” star Portman. The publicity-shy actress, wearing a red leather minidress festooned with safety pins, said, “Oh, man, this is silly. It feels very incredible to be so completely supported by everybody that voted for me, it actually really, truly does. Thank you. We have obviously the greatest fans ever.” The luminous Reese Witherspoon was presented with this year’s MTV Generation Award , preceded by her “Water for Elephants” co-star Pattinson, giving a touching, and quite salty, tribute to the actress, who’s been his movie mother and lover. “I’m just so lucky in my career and my life,” said Witherspoon, who kindly corrected the punch line to one of Pattinson’s most off-color jokes, while praising her chemistry with “Sweet Home Alabama” co-star Patrick Dempsey. “I just want to say to all the girls out there: I know it’s cool to be bad, I get it … but it’s also possible to make it in Hollywood without a reality show … so for all the girls out there, it’s possible to be a good girl.” Related Videos Backstage At The 2011 MTV Movie Awards Amazing Exclusives From The MTV Movie Awards ‘Twilight’ Stars Take Over 2011 MTV Movie Awards Related Photos ‘Twilight’ At The 2011 MTV Movie Awards Exclusive Movie Props From The 2011 MTV Movie Awards Related Artists Justin Bieber

Lady Gaga Gave Rick Gonzalez ‘Freedom’ To Play Jesus His Way In ‘Judas’

Actor tells MTV News that co-directors Gaga and Laurieann Gibson ‘gave me a lot of confidence.’ By Matt Elias Rick Gonzalez Photo: MTV News Just a day after Lady Gaga’s video for “Judas” debuted , fans and foes alike are still buzzing with reactions. That includes actor/rapper Rick Gonzalez, who plays Jesus in the video. For Gonzalez, the experience was somewhat surreal, beginning with his initial casting. “I’m sitting in my house, I get a call from my manager, [and] she says, ‘Lady Gaga wants you to be in the video,’ ” Gonzalez recalled to MTV News. “I’m like, ‘Oh, cool. Lady Gaga who?’ and she’s like, ‘Rick, the Lady Gaga.’ And I’m like, ‘Wow, OK.’ And the first thing that comes to my mind and what I tell her is, like, ‘How does she know I even exist?’ “They send a treatment over and I read it, and I was like, ‘Wow, I’m honored to be even a part of it.’ I really love the story and what she did and [where] she was thinking of going with it and I was really honored to be a part of it. So I was really stoked.” Once on set, Gonzalez said it felt more like a film than a music video. ” Laurieann Gibson, who directed along with Gaga — I mean, they really had great shots and they had this amazing huge production set up for the video,” Gonzalez said. “It really did feel that way. We were on a bike, on a flatbed truck, and I have Gaga behind me, and we’re like moving around the lot, just running around. So it was definitely grand in that scheme.” While Gonzalez had the honor of manning Gaga’s motorcycle in the opening shots, he was relieved that he didn’t have to actually drive it for the wide shots. “Those shots, that’s not me riding,” the actor revealed. “So the shots with me and her, we’re literally being dragged on a truck. I didn’t want the responsibility of dropping a bike with Gaga on it.” The actor developed newfound respect for Gaga after witnessing just how hands-on she was with all aspects of the clip. But there was one area that Gaga and co-director Gibson ceded to Gonzalez. “The beautiful thing about playing Jesus in the video was they really gave me the freedom to find it in my own way and they gave me a lot of confidence in that, and I was really impressed in Laurieann’s direction and just giving me the space and letting me find it,” Gonzalez said. He was equally impressed with how Gaga and Gibson communicated, which at times wasn’t even verbal. “I think the chemistry between Laurieann and Lady Gaga, it was interesting to watch because they were totally in sync with each other creatively, and I think that you’re going to see a lot more amazing things with them, ’cause they totally have like this synergy with them,” he predicted, adding, “And I’ve overheard them say they’re totally gonna do a lot more things together, so I’m excited to see what that stuff’s gonna be.” What do you think of Rick’s portrayal of Jesus in the “Judas” video? Miley Cyrus Working On ‘Big Bang’ Film

Her mother, Tish Cyrus, might help turn Rock Mafia video into a movie. By Jocelyn Vena Miley Cyrus in “The Big Bang” video Photo: Hollywood Records Back in November, Rock Mafia’s Tim James revealed to MTV News that plans were being formed to turn the sexy clip for their tune “The Big Bang” into an even-sexier movie starring its video girl, Miley Cyrus . Now it seems the project is well under way. E! News reports that Miley’s mom, Tish Cyrus, has been meeting with Suzanne Todd — a producer on films such as “Alice in Wonderland,” the “Austin Powers” films and “Memento” — to turn the music video into a full-length feature. Sources tell the website Miley is looking to reprise her role to pick up where her ghostly character left off. There’s no word yet if Kevin Zegers will return to the project. Rock Mafia’s Antonina Armato tweeted about the project, for which her team would reportedly help write the script. “Just had a Meeting with Tish Cyrus and Suzanne Todd for ‘Big Bang’ To be made into a Movie!!! #fingerscrossed,” she tweeted Monday. A rep for the group did not respond to MTV News’ request for more information by press time. Armato said the film will be “epic.” Regarding the “Big Bang” music video, James gave props to Miley and Zegers for their turn as star-crossed lovers. “The whole idea was to do something different,” he explained. “[The director] had such a cool vision for it … the vision was to let it fly, let the chemistry speak for itself. When we were watching them shoot it, we were like, ‘Wow, this is going to be really cool.’ “Kevin and [Miley] both brought their real acting game to it. … The chemistry is not by accident. You can feel it, and it’s intense,” he continued. “I’m really proud of both of them.” Are you excited for a “Big Bang” film? Tell us in the comments below? Michelle Orange’s Top 10 Films of 2010

Asking what films I’ve seen recently is a good way to wipe my brain clean. Once, in a job interview where it was clear the answer would determine my fate, all I could come up with was Calendar Girls , which would have been a poor choice even as a recent release, which it was not. Tabulation is not a strong suit. Rubrics wear me out. A recent report on people with brains like databases with total recall made me itch, and yet the chemistry made sense: An abundance of adrenaline caused ordinary events to imprint in their memories the way only extraordinary events — or even amazing shots, bravura scenes, and other bits of movie magic — do for the rest of us.

Super weeds put USDA on hotseat

“Farmers who expanded farm size are finding it difficult, if not impossible, to manage the larger operations now that additional time is required for weed management.” The U.S. Congress got an earful from farmers, university researchers and pro-food groups during the first round of hearings into the increase in super weeds, deemed so because some are becoming resistant to multiple modes of actions and families of chemistries used in popular herbicides. Eyes and ears for the U.S. House of Representatives in the case of super weeds is the Domestic Policy Oversight Subcommittee. The late July hearings were called to evaluate the impact of genetically engineered, herbicide-resistant crops on the environment and on the abundance and quality of the U.S. food supply. The Congressional Committee is chaired by Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio). The hearings are titled “Are Superweeds an Outgrowth of USDA Biotech Policy?” An Indiana farmer Troy Roush, who was the target of a 2000 suit brought forth by Monsanto, gave a scathing indictment of GM plants. The suit was dropped by Monsanto, but Roush says he and his family spent two years fighting it. In his testimony to the House sub-committee, Roush documented the development of glyphosate resistant weeds on his 5,500 acre family farm. “In 2005, we first began to encounter problems with glyphosate resistance in marestail and lambsquarters in both our soybean and corn crops. Since there had been considerable discussion in the agricultural press about weeds developing resistance or tolerance to Roundup, I contacted a Monsanto weed scientist to discuss the problems I was experiencing on the farm and what could be done to eradicate the problematic weeds. “Despite well documented proof that glyphosate tolerant weeds were becoming a significant problem, the Monsanto scientist denied that resistance existed and instructed me to increase my application rates,” the Indiana farmer reported. “The increase in application rates proved ineffectual, and I was forced to turn to alternative methods for weed management including the use of tillage and other chemistry. “In 2007, the weed problems had gotten so severe that we turned to an ALS inhibitor marketed as Canopy to alleviate the problem in our preplant, burndown herbicide application. “In 2008, we were forced to include the use of 2,4-D and an ALS residual, to our herbicide programs. Like most farmers, we are very sensitive to environmental issues and we were very reluctant to return to using tillage and more toxic herbicides for weed control. However, no other solutions were then or are now readily available to eradicate the weed problems caused by development of glyphosate resistance,” Roush said. There is little doubt the discovery of genetically altered, target herbicide tolerant plants has made billions of dollars for U.S. farmers. Few can argue the management decisions on farms across the U.S. being made easier by having this technology. In fact, the ease of operation has made good land out of marginal land and some contend, good farmers out of fair farmers. Again, there is little doubt that the introduction of Roundup Ready cotton and soybeans has allowed growers in the Southeast to expand their acreage — a reality that is coming back to bite some large farmers who are having problems managing weeds with resistance to multiple families of herbicides. Roush, who is also vice-president of the National Corn Growers Association, says bigger farms with multiple herbicide resistance problems are in great danger. “The increased ease of use and convenience of herbicide tolerant crops enabled many farmers to significantly increase crop acreage which helped to offset higher production costs and, in some cases, lower yields. Biotech companies encouraged farm expansion by offering discounts for buying seed in bulk. “The advent of glyphosate tolerant weeds necessitated the return to using tillage for weed control, eliminating the time savings that was initially afforded by using biotech crops. “Farmers who expanded farm size are now finding it difficult, if not impossible, to manage the larger operations now that additional time is required for weed management,” the Indiana farmer said. The driving force behind the congressional look into super weeds is the Center for Food Safety (CFS), which is a project of the International Center for Technology Assessment (ICTA). CFS is headed by Andrew Kimbrell, who was mentored by Jeremy Rifkin at the Foundation on Economic Trends. For sure there is plenty of ammunition to be fired by both sides: Corn (85 percent of U.S. production is GM), soy (91 percent GM), cotton (88 percent GM), canola (85 percent GM) and sugar beets (95 percent GM) are all genetically engineered to withstand large amounts of glyphosate herbicide. Since the introduction of Roundup Ready technology yields per acre have gone up and continue to increase, especially for corn and soybeans. Worldwide the adoption of GM products is astounding. The latest figures come from 2008, at which time herbicide tolerance deployed in soybeans, corn, canola, cotton and alfalfa occupied 63 percent, or roughly 200 million acres of the global biotech area of 325 million acres. HT soybeans are currently grown mostly in the United States, Argentina, Brazil, and other South American countries, accounting for 70 percent of worldwide soybean production. Insect resistance to GM products, primarily based on different genes from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis, worldwide is estimated at 50 million acres. These Bt genes control the European corn borer, the corn rootworm, different stemborers, and of most importance to the Southeast, bollworm and budworm in cotton Kimbrell, an attorney and founder and head of the watchdog group Center for Food Safety, testifying before the House Subcommittee laid much of the blame on development and proliferation of super weeds at the feet of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. “The history of USDA’s oversight of genetically engineered (GE) crops is littered with failures. The Government Accounting Office (GAO), the USDA’s own Office of Inspector General (OIG), and the Federal Courts have repeatedly condemned USDA for oversight deficiencies and inadequate management,” Kimbrell testified. “Regulation of GE crops has in part been defined by judicial decisions in lawsuits brought by CFS and others on behalf of farmers, consumers, and environmental groups. American agriculture cannot afford such “regulation by litigation,” an approach that has become standard operating procedure at USDA,” Kimbrell said In response to the testimony from farmers, watchdog groups and university scientists, Rep. Kucinich said, “the Agriculture Department (USDA) has been too quick to approve new varieties of herbicide-tolerant crops and other biotech products. “Now, more than ever, farmers need to have a Department of Agriculture that takes care to preserve and protect the farming environment for generations to come,” Kucinich concluded. added by: JanforGore

‘American Idol’ Producer Nigel Lythgoe Discusses Show’s Future

‘I’m reading so much baloney,’ Lythgoe says of rumor-filled search for new judges. By James Montgomery Nigel Lythgoe Photo: Stephen Shugerman/Getty Images Earlier this month, it was announced that Nigel Lythgoe would be returning to “American Idol” as an executive producer, ending a two-year absence during which the once-mighty show took a tumble, in terms of both ratings and cultural relevance. His return couldn’t have come during a more tenuous time for “Idol,” which has already seen the departures of iconic judge Simon Cowell , quickly improving Kara DioGuardi and, uh, genuinely nice Ellen DeGeneres . In fact, at the moment, the show has just one judge under contract for next season (that would be Randy Jackson) and has embarked on a lengthy, rumor-filled search to find two new talents to pair him with, with Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and, until recently, Jennifer Lopez the reported frontrunners. Obviously, Lythgoe has his work cut out for him. Rumors abound that he’s contemplating a massive overhaul of the show, though in a new interview with Yahoo Music he kept his plans close to the vest while making it very clear that he believes “Idol” ‘s flagging fortunes can be reversed. “Listen, I wouldn’t be going back if I didn’t think the show could be turned around,” he said. “I do think if we put the focus back in the right place, which is on that young talent, [then] why wouldn’t it be successful?” Lythgoe also downplayed reports that J.Lo’s diva-like demands had taken her out of consideration for the “Idol” judges’ table, and cautioned that no one should believe anything they’ve read about just who will be joining Jackson on the show. It’s still very early in the process, after all. “I’m reading so much baloney in everything. There was something in the press saying Jennifer Lopez is a diva. That woman is in no way a diva, they don’t know what divas are if they think Jennifer Lopez is one. … There is so much rubbish going on,” he said. “My feeling is [the selection process] depends on the content of the panel, and the chemistry within it. I don’t care if they’re Romanian, as long as they fit in with the people around them, and we get a feeling that they know what they’re talking about. “All you want [in an “Idol” judge] is somebody who’s going to be honest with their decisions, not somebody who’s going to say things to be nice,” he continued. “And why would a star, in truth, want to come on that show and say, ‘You were crap tonight?’ because that star is going to be booed. … So it’s going to be really difficult. You just want honest people.” To that end, Lythgoe added that “Idol” might just choose a few lesser-known talents to serve as judges. After all, it worked in the past, and Lythgoe sees no reason why it couldn’t happen again. Such a move just might return the focus of the show back towards the contestants. “Don’t forget, when I started ‘American Idol,’ I brought over Simon Cowell, who no one had heard of, and a young man called Randy Jackson … and Paula Abdul, who a lot of people had said, well, her career is over,” he said. “And that was the start of a team that will be revered every time judges are spoken about. So it isn’t just about what you’ve done in your career, it’s about how you fit in with other people around you. And at the end of the day, it’s about the contestants and their talent, and it’s not about the judges.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.
