‘The East’: How Marling & Batmanglij’s Dumpster-Diving Freegan Summer Inspired The Eco-Anarchist Sundance Thriller

Two Sundances ago Brit Marling mesmerized as the leader of a cult being infiltrated by two would-be documentarians in Zal Batmanglij ‘s Sound Of My Voice ; this year she returns to Park City as the infiltrator, playing a corporate operative who goes undercover within a volatile anti-capitalist eco-anarchist group in Batmanglij’s sophomore feature, The East . Hit the jump for a peek at the tense first trailer and let Ellen Page ‘s steely-pixie voice put you on edge. The East just debuted in Park City to mixed-positive buzz, with some critics praising Batmanglij’s yarn-spinning direction. Fox Searchlight has this pic and Park Chan-Wook ‘s Stoker at Sundance (both produced by the late Tony Scott ). As a fan of relative newcomer Marling I hope this one finds its footing, since Fox Searchlight is in the Brit Marling business but hasn’t yet been able to make her critically praised films ( Sound of My Voice , Another Earth ) into bona fide indie hits. That said, while The East packs more star power (Ellen Page, Alexander Skarsgård, Julia Ormond, Shiloh Fernandez, Patricia Clarkson, Toby Kebbell!) than Batmanglij and Marling’s previous collaboration the behind-the-scenes story of its creation is more of a curiosity factor. The action-mystery spy pic, reportedly shot for $6.5 million, according to Batmanglij, “came into being through our personal frustration with rampant consumerism and all the contradictions of living in modern civilization.” Per Fox Searchlight, co-writers Batmanglij and Marling found inspiration for their thriller after going off the grid on a “freegan” walkabout one summer, hopping trains and sleeping on the street and dumpster diving for food: “We had read about ‘Buy Nothing Day’ and tried it – there was something liberating about not buying anything for a day. So we thought we might try a buy nothing summer. We’d heard about the freegan movement – people desiring to live simpler, more community based lives. We wanted to know what that was like first hand,” says Marling. “Going weeks without spending a dollar is an amazing feeling,” the director says. “Everyone should try it. We didn’t see movies. We weren’t listening to recorded music. Everything was happening organically from the group. The spin-the-bottle game in the film came from an experience we had. Thursday nights that was what we did as a way of entertaining ourselves.” There were aspects of the transient life that took some getting used to, admits Marling. “I was a bit repelled at first about things like getting into a dumpster to look for food. But like Sarah, we learned there are packages of bread that have been thrown away because they’re past their sell-by date, but nothing is wrong with them. Much of our culture’s ‘waste’ is actually bounty. We slept 20 people to a room in sleeping bags on the floor. There were no showers, but after a while you learn your hair begins to clean itself.” I love Marling’s ballsiness. I have doubts about her hair maintenance tips. (But seriously, she has amazing hair, so…) Read more from the Sundance Film Festival : SUNDANCE: ‘Two Mothers,’ Two Secret Affairs And Uncomfortable Laughter SUNDANCE: Mother Pus Bucket! I know there’s something about Quentin Dupieux‘s films that rub people the wrong way, but I have a deep affection for the absurdity of Rubber. (I haven’t yet had a chance to see his new feature, Wrong.) I get great enjoyment from his irreverent, slightly pretentious take on film. GALLERY: Tarsem on the Late Eiko Ishioka and the Fairytale Look of Mirror Mirror

He’s painted cinematic landscapes of psychosexual kink ( The Cell ), childhood fantasy ( The Fall ), and ancient Greek 3-D abs ( Immortals ), but in this week’s Mirror Mirror director Tarsem takes a turn into uncharted territory: The family-friendly fairytale. Turning his attentions to the story of Snow White , Tarsem creates another visually rich fantasyland of imagination — and gives the fabled princess a post-modern streak to boot — with the help of the late Oscar-winning costume designer and longtime collaborator Eiko Ishioka ( Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters , Bram Stoker’s Dracula , Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark ), who passed away in January at the age of 73. In an exclusive chat, Tarsem takes Movieline through his work with Ishioka and the whimsical, inventive, and utterly imaginative designs of Mirror Mirror that comprise their final collaboration on film. GALLERY: Tarsem on Eiko Ishioka and the Fairytale Look of Mirror Mirror Head over to the Mirror Mirror Gallery here for Tarsem’s notes on the costumes, design, and visual inspirations for Mirror Mirror , or scroll down for additional thoughts as Tarsem discusses his relationship with Ishioka, his approach to the Snow White mythology, and his plans to take a break from heavily visual storytelling with his next project. ON HIS LONGTIME COLLABORATION WITH EIKO ISHIOKA Tarsem says he was looking for a break from his heavily visual films when he decided to take on Mirror Mirror for the chance to work one last time with Ishioka, who succumbed to cancer only months after production wrapped. “On a personal level I did not want to do more than three visual films,” he said, “but the reason that really pushed it together was that I knew that Eiko did not have more than a year to go. She did not have more than a movie left in her. I said, okay, let’s do a visual film. Eiko’s kind of like me, unfortunately – she has only two gears, full speed or off, and I just knew that she wanted to work.” ON THE IMPORTANCE OF MAKING SNOW WHITE A HEROINE CAPABLE OF SAVING HERSELF Tarsem’s Snow White (played by Lily Collins ) springs into action as a swashbuckling bandit princess in Mirror Mirror’s post-modern take — a far cry from the original Disney animation. Tarsem sought to make a family film that simultaneously rejected the “damsel in distress” angle. “I had done three R-rated movies and thought I wanted to do a family film,” he said. “Everyone asked me again and again if I wanted to do a gritty, R-rated Snow White and I said no! The original story, as beloved as it is, is a ten-minute story. It’s just about vanity. I’d never seen the original animation until about a month ago, and I thought I would like to have a different take on it.” ON THE OTHER SNOW WHITE MOVIE, SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN Tarsem had to scrap plans to release Mirror Mirror in 3-D in order to get into theaters ahead of the competition — Rupert Sanders’ action adventure Snow White and the Huntsman , starring Kristen Stewart . “We had to come out first because we are a smaller movie than the big, grand action-adventure,” Tarsem explained. “It’s always easier to sell those on a trailer. I said, ‘We have to come first.’ They could afford to come second, but we couldn’t afford to come second.” ON HIS NEXT MOVIE — A ‘NON-VISUAL’ PROJECT “By that I don’t mean handheld, gritty, running around stuff — it’s not going to be Law & Order – but a contemporary tale. The film I’m going towards right now is a very simple drone attack from the perspective of the guys who fly the planes that are actually flying in Africa, but they do it from a little container in the desert. It’s a drone attack, so what are the politics involved in saying, ‘Go ahead and do this’ and just watching the collateral damage of when you can give a go-ahead and when you cannot, and how the same act feels completely different on the ground than for the people in the sky who come and knock them out? It’s what right now I’m gearing towards, but anything that’s interesting right now that isn’t fantasy oriented, a tale that isn’t completely designed, is what I want to do. This is the closest I’m to it right now and I’m going to go for it.” GALLERY: Tarsem on Eiko Ishioka and the Fairytale Look of Mirror Mirror Mirror Mirror is in theaters Friday. Shaunie O’Neal Speaks On Evelyn & Jen’s Friendship

Read this article:

In the first half of our two-part interview with Shaunie O’Neal, she held nothing back as we grilled her on the behind-the-scenes politics surrounding the ever controversial “Basketball Wives” reality series.  As our conversation continued Shaunie revealed her thoughts on “Messy” Meeka, the state of Jen & Evelyn’s friendship and “Basketball Wives: LA”. Do you think Jen had a point about Chad being a media-whore? I think it’s absolutely no one’s business. I always tell Evelyn and everybody else, if she’s happy, I’m happy, that’s my friend. What Chad does, doesn’t do, how he does it, is none of my business. As long as she’s happy or they are happy together, I don’t understand why everyone is all like “is it real, is it fake?” I mean they’ve been together like over a year. But Jen is her friend and had concerns, so it’s not like it’s just the public speculating? There’s so much that you guys miss because it’s an hour long show and they don’t want to be a dead horse over 12 hours of the same subject, there’s a lot that you guys miss. I think that Evelyn and Jen’s relationship…they are not as close as they were, they don’t talk everyday like they used to. We’re not bff’s all the time. So again I don’t know where Jen was coming from or how Jen was trying to come at it. I know she wasn’t trying to hurt Evelyn. I think Evelyn needed to get something off her chess to Jen; Jen probably needed to get a few things off of her chest to Evelyn and friendships do go on roller-coasters sometimes. Sometimes you fall out with your best friend in the whole world for 20 years but you figure it out and that’s all that matters. Did Meeka just leave the show never to be heard from again? Meeka was trying to tape within 12 hours of having the physical altercation with Tami. She didn’t want to leave Rome.  She was all in for coming back and would be all in for another season, but I’m not sure that’s the direction we would take again because it just didn’t seem to work. You’ve been vocal about not feeling the cast of “Basketball Wives: LA”.  Was the LA show a part of your plans for the franchise? I did intend for the show to branch out.  I always wanted us to go to different cities.  I didn’t know the first was going to be in L.A. beceause I was still in the process of filming season three in Miami.  I knew a few of the girls. Gloria from jump was going to be in the L.A. [cast] and I was fine with that. Her sister definitely was not in discussion, I’m a line drawer at some point. I would never have chosen to take that route.  Now as it starts to film and things start to happen, this has turned in to, there’s some basketball wives, fiances, girlfriends and then you have ‘I slept with a Basketball player at one time in my life and I’m on the show.’  That’s not ok with me.  I wanted some women that actually had relationships with these men that aren’t denied. We look forward to seeing how it all goes down on the reunion special next week.  I’m predicting Royce, Evelyn and Tami get in to a physical altercation, Suzy looks confused, Shaunie looks shocked and Jennifer watches while wondering if this is how people on food stamps behave. “Basketball Wives” Tami Roman Dishes On Fight With Meeka, Meeka Responds “Basketball Wives” Tami Roman Sued For Attacking Co-Star Meeka Claxton Shaunie O’Neal Defends “Basketball Wives” Franchise [EXCLUSIVE]

Andrew Bujalski Discusses His New Project Computer Chess (and How You Can Help)

Eight years after Andrew Bujalski’s shoestring-budget feature debut Funny Ha Ha emerged to significant critical acclaim (no less than The New York Times declared it one of the most influential films of the decade, due in large part to Bujalski’s follow-up Mutual Appreciation and the Mumblecore movement that sprung up around it), the filmmaker is back in development mode with his shoestring-budget fourth feature, Computer Chess . And this time around, you can help.

The Greatest ‘Rock N’ Jock Softball’ All-Stars Of All Time

It’s hard to imagine MC Hammer and Kevin Costner in any other list, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Dan Cortese, Jon Stewart and George Clooney at MTV’s sixth annual ?Rock N’ Jock Softball? in 1995 Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Today is, I believe, the saddest day of the year. Because, as is tradition following the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, there are absolutely no sports on TV, which is a total bummer (OK, there are some WNBA games ). So naturally, I am left scrambling to fill the void. I’ve already called my parents and told them I loved them, rescued a pair of dogs from an all-kill shelter, and donated money to several worthwhile charities, but none of that has brought me the kind of perverse gratification that staring at the lineups of my struggling fantasy baseball teams does (curse you Jacoby Ellsbury!). Perhaps I am obsessed with sports. Perhaps, they are ruining my life. And perhaps going without them — even for one day — is a good thing. But probably not. So rather than continue bettering my life (and the lives of those around me), I’ve decided to use the remainder of these miserable 24 hours to do something really important: Assemble a list of the greatest “Rock N’ Jock Softball” athletes of all time. See, as a gawky teenager, I was obsessed with “Rock N’ Jock.” I actually used to set my VCR to record it when it premiered each year (though, of course, if I missed that airing, I could always catch the next 567). It was appointment TV! Sure, the brand eventually expanded to include both basketball and football, but for me, “RN’J Softball” was always where it was at. Call me a purist, but there was nothing like watching Roger McDowell (in khaki shorts) give up an inside-the-park home run to Darryl Strawberry, or seeing various castmembers of “Melrose Place” try w-a-a-a-y too hard to stretch a single into a double, or witness Keanu Reeves getting picked off of first by Tone Loc (yes, this actually happened). In short, “Rock N’ Jock Softball” was magic — to me, it may be the most magical thing MTV has ever done (it’s also the reason a photo of Dan Cortese, Jon Stewart and George Clooney together exists). And yet, aside from a few YouTube clips, its very existence seems to have been forgotten. The achievements of greats like Cortese, Van Earl Wright and Brady Anderson (who just might have been the sideburned embodiment of all things “Rock N’ Jock”) have been lost to the sands of time. And I think it’s time to change that. So, with that noble ideal in mind (and since I’m going through serious sports withdrawal), I decided to honor some of the best “RN’J” athletes of all time. With apologies to the likes of David Faustino, Jonathan Silverman and Bobby Bonilla, here’s my inaugural class of “Rock N’ Jock Softball” All-Stars. MC Hammer A no-brainer. Hammer was, of course, a bat boy for the Oakland A’s as a teen (a position he would hold for eight seasons, according to Wikipedia ), played ball in high school and actually earned a try-out with the San Francisco Giants. He carried his talents over to “Rock N’ Jock,” where he starred in — as best as I can calculate — at least at least three games. A stirring possessor of both blinding speed and astonishing skill, he stole 16 bases drove in 22 runs in the 1993 contest, a record that stands to this day. OK, I just made that part up, but still, Hammer was the man. Dan Cortese The face of not only “Rock N’ Jock,” but of the late, great MTV Sports, Cortese was a fixture at all “RN’J” contests, both as a player and a manager. During his final game — the 1997 Softball Challenge — he homered over the Pepsi can in his last at-bat (check the 4:45 mark of this clip , a moment that will live on in “Rock N’ Jock” lore forever). Sammy Hagar and Sam Kinison: Not only do both of these guys represent everything that was great about the heady heyday of early ’90s “Rock N’ Jock,” but their chess match in the first “Rock N’ Jock” game — as managers of the Salamanders and Aardvarks, respectively — was one for the ages. And not just because, as you can see at the 1:48 mark of this clip , Hagar sized up his side’s chances thusly, referring to the color of their jerseys: “My team is the winning team … we are white, and white is right.” Mike Piazza Sure, he was a 12-time All-Star in real life, but there are few — if any — athletes who excelled at “Rock N’ Jock” quite like Big Mike. He played in many games and is actually the all-time “Rock N’ Jock” RBI leader, as verified by the immortal Chris Connelly at the 9:30 mark of this clip , which makes him a first-ballot selection. Jack McDowell I seem to remember him being inducted into the “RN’J” Hall of Fame — they made him a plaque and everything — but now he’s an All-Star too. McDowell was all too willing to play along with the producers of the game, dressing up as a centurion one year, a cowboy the next. As a pitcher, he served up more than his fair share of homers, but he always did it gleefully, which is what counts here. Kevin Costner I spoke to various people here at MTV about this column. One of them was actually working here back when the channel did “Rock N’ Jock,” and he told me that of all the celebs who graced the field over the years, none of them took the game as seriously — or tried as embarrassingly hard — as Costner did. Watching him sprint around the bases, hair flowing, arms pumping (at the 1:11 mark of this glorious clip) to score on Strawberry’s inside-the-park homer is proof of this. B.o.B Says All City Chess Club Side Project Is ‘Fun And Creative’

Supergroup also includes Lupe Fiasco, Asher Roth, J. Cole, Charles Hamilton, the Cool Kids, Diggy Simmons, Wale and Blu. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Steven Roberts B.o.B Photo: MTV News Last month, Lupe Fiasco introduced a new super crew via Twitter when he sent a dispatch about the All City Chess Club. The Chicago lyricist wrote that the members included himself, B.o.B , Asher Roth , J. Cole, Charles Hamilton, the Cool Kids, Diggy Simmons, Wale and indie rapper Blu. B.o.B told MTV News that the members are already brainstorming ideas. “The All City Chess Club is something that Lupe had the idea about, and me and Charles Hamilton were at a show, and he came up with the idea and talked to us about it, and we were down,” B.o.B said of the group’s genesis. “I feel like the respect level is mutual with all of us. And I’ve already done songs with Charles Hamilton, Lupe and Asher Roth. Basically, the whole concept of it is to have a project, a freelance project, that’s something fun and creative.” So far, nothing is concrete, and Lupe, Cole, Roth, the Cool Kids, Blu and Wale are all working on their own albums, while Hamilton is looking to resurrect his dormant career and Diggy Simmons is just introducing himself as an artist. The majority of the members are alumni of XXL ‘s Freshmen 10 lists. Roth, B.o.B. Blu, Wale and Hamilton graced the cover in ’09, while Cole was a part of the group that landed on the cover this year. April Fools: Bungie Teases Halo: Chess

As I type this, Sterling McGarvey and Andrew Pfister are debating the best PR strategy for promoting our new Sasquatch Stalker app for the Apple iPad (it scans users’ feet and cross-references them with every Bigfoot footprint on record at all the major museums and research facilities around the world. Bigfoot is a well-known early adopter, and this app could be just the thing to blow this whole operation wide open!). Sadly, because of how feverishly my squatch mates are debating, they have no idea that Bungie has released a new developer diary for Halo: Reach (via VG247 ) that is actually a reveal trailer for a super secret Halo project that has all the (ironic) makings of a Halo-killer. Behold: Halo: Chess . Source: VG247 Bungie – Halo Reach – Chess – Halo – Game
